Classification: Query
Surnames: MILAN, PILAT
My great-grandmother Tekla MILAN came to the U.S. (I believe) ca. 1905-1910. Supposedly she worked here in NY as a servant for a wealthy Jewish family for a period of time. She was married ca. 1911 and lived in Manhattan, NYC until she died in 1973 at officially "age 90" (possibly a bit older). There are 2 "Tekla MILAN"s shown in the Ellis Island records, but neither one seems to match what I know about her. My grandfather thinks she might have come from (near) Tarnopol (Ternopil), but not certain. She was definitely from Austrian Galicia (probably the eastern part) and was Orthodox, not Catholic or Greek Cath., so she was probably Ukrainian (though she married here to a Pole named Frank PILAT from Bukovina). My grandfather has told me that she had 6 brothers that served and died in the Austrian army in WWI.
That's about all I know. Any connections?? Thanks, Brian
