Schieck Schenck Schiek Moylan Milan

It would be helpful if list members could report when the spellings of the family name was changed. They could be done under separate threads, for example "Schieck to Shenck" or "Schieck to Schiek" and the likes. To do it, we would have to list individuals whom we have documented evidence of a spelling change of their last names. This was common practice when they immigrated or were adopted into a family with a similarly spelled last name. For instance, my great grandmother changed her name from Eleanor Moylan to Helen Milan so my maternal grandfather's name was Robert C. Milan not Moylan and my mother and her six sisters were also all Milan.

Milan, O'Donnell Cook Cty, Chicago

I'm trying to piece together a history of his father's family for my son. I have found 1920 Chicago census which shows Michael Milan, b Canada abt 1861; Anna, his wife b. in Wisconsin abt.1867; their daughter Marian O'Donnell b. in Illinois abt 1902; and her infant daughter Anna Mae b. 1919 in Chicago. Marian (known as Mary Ann) was my ex-husband's grandmother. Her daughter, Anna Mae, was called Nancy. Her father's name was Robert O'Donnell. His father was also Robert and his mother was called Biddy. In 1938, Nancy married Fred T Hall b. 8-4-1910 in St. Paul, MN. They had 4 sons. Both Fred and Nancy were deceased by 1956 and the elder 2 of their sons were raised in Boys' Town. The next to the youngest was raised by O'Donnell relatives in Lombard, IL. The youngest son, my son's father, was raised by his grandmother, Marian (Mary Ann) in Miami. She apparently was married three times, second to a Hughes and third to Charlie Hendrickson. This is absolutely all I can find about any of these folks. Does any of this sound familiar to anyone? Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Milan's from Spain, Cuba and Mexico

My wife's father and I seem to have traced his mother's family, MILAN from Mexico to Cuba and back to Spain just before the late 1890's. The story told by Carmen MILAN ROJO was that her parents left Spain for Cuba just before the Spanish-American War. When things got too hot for them there, they left Cuba for Mexico, but were picked up by an American warship. The warship deposited them in Mexico, and shortly thereafter, my wife's grandmother was born in Nueva Rosita, Coahuila, Mexico, 31 July 1902. Her mother's name was Candida CAMBRA MILAN, her father's name is still unknown. Candida had at least two other sons, Jose and Vicente, and I've found border crossing records, census records and even documented the unfortunate death of one of Jose's newborn infants in 1916 in Eagle Pass, Texas.

I'd like to contact anyone with information about this family.

Hi. Sorry to be so late in answering your query. Been having trouble with my Comcast email so haven't checked it in awhile. You asked the name of my great grandmother. It is Anna Milan (Moylan) b 21 Mar 1852 in Bellevue, Jackson Co, IA. She married Jabez W. Conner 1 March 1876 in Dunlap, Harrison Co, IA but I can't find any records to prove this. Even the original is gone as it went up in a house fire according to her request for a Civil War Widow's Pension. She d 23 Aug 1909 in Lyons, Clinton Co, IA and is buried in Oakland Cemetery there. I've been told she smoked a clay pipe and couldn't read or write.

Her parents are Edward Milan (Moylan) and Hannah Record, the same line as Jim Milan's, of Texas. Yes, he and I are related. If you would like any more info please e-mail me at wiggid1@hotmail.com.

Thanks!
Carolyn Conner Dietz

Tekla Milan from Galicia (Tarnopol?) to NYC ca. 1908

My great-grandmother Tekla MILAN came to the U.S. (I believe) ca. 1905-1910. Supposedly she worked here in NY as a servant for a wealthy Jewish family for a period of time. She was married ca. 1911 and lived in Manhattan, NYC until she died in 1973 at officially "age 90" (possibly a bit older). There are 2 "Tekla MILAN"s shown in the Ellis Island records, but neither one seems to match what I know about her. My grandfather thinks she might have come from (near) Tarnopol (Ternopil), but not certain. She was definitely from Austrian Galicia (probably the eastern part) and was Orthodox, not Catholic or Greek Cath., so she was probably Ukrainian (though she married here to a Pole named Frank PILAT from Bukovina). My grandfather has told me that she had 6 brothers that served and died in the Austrian army in WWI.

That's about all I know. Any connections?? Thanks, Brian

My grandmother’s great grandfather was John Milan from Croom, Co. Limerick, Ireland b. 1809 he lived the majority of his life in Galesburg, IL where he dies in 1899 at 90.
I'm fairly sure John Milan had relatives in the states (brothers, cousins etc..) but have been unable to find anything.. In truth I can't even find anything out about him or his wife before they left Ireland (very frustrating) So I've started posting on message boards hopeful that one day Something may turn up. I was intrigued when I saw your posting about Milan’s from Ireland and thought I’d drop a line (you can see my complete posting in the forum, it's the newest one there titles: MILAN Family (possible variants MOYLAN, MOILAN, MYLAN, MELAN, MILEN)
Dear Peter,

As far as I currently know, none of my distant Milan relatives are living/lived in your county However my Grandmother is a Milan and her great grandfather is John Milan from Croom, Co. Limerick, Ireland b. 1809 m. 1849 (possibly in the England) to a Margaret O'Connell. And it generally believed that he live in England for a few years before immigrating to the US in 1851. And that he was staying/living with relatives of the same name. Unfortunately I have no other information to provide. But I may be able to shed some light on the MILAN surname
As far as I can tell Milan is a spelling variation of MOYLAN In Irish it is Ó Maoláin an anglicized form of Gaelic. Since many people could not find gainful employment if they where Irish; i.e. Irish sounding names. Many changed their names dropping elements commonly found in them. And yet other where simply recorded incorrectly.
I have also seen it written as Moilan; as found in some probate documents from an ancestor of mine.

Hope this can help you out some

M.
Adolphe Milan and Marie Rose Cantrelle were my grandfather's grandparents. He is descended from their son Adolphe Milan and Victorine Alonzo who had 5 sons - Joseph, Alex, Albert, Alfred, & Julius Bernard, My grandfather was Albert. I have a fair amount of information on Adolphe & Victorine and their family. I also have a lot of information on the Milans and Cantrelles from Shirley Bourquard's "Early Settlers of the Delta: families of St. Bernard, Plaquemines and Orleans Parishes."

I have very little on Adolphe and Marie Rose other than what Adolphe & Victorine put on their marriage license and Bourquard. I would love to have more information about them. I would be glad to share my research with you.
Suzanne Woolley Smith
tomandsuzysmith@bellsouth.net

I'm researching my maternal line - the Levy family in Hampshire, England, and have come across a Sarah Milan marrying a Peter Levy in Sherborne St John, Hampshire on 4 Feb 1736. Does anyone have any information about the Milan family in Hampshire in general or England?

Thanks
Liz

Hi

How are you related to the Levy family? I am descended from George Levy and his clan who lived in Beauworth in Hampshire, and then his family moved to West End then to Bitterne. IT would be interesting to see how you are related to the Levy family.

Thanks
Liz

Searching for my Milan ancestors from Mexico

Hi
I am desperately searching for any information regarding the initial developments of the surname Milan in San Luis Potosi, Mexico preferably in the region of Mateula or El Venado. I have recently been interested in finding if in fact the last name is Italian or if it may have changed over time from San Millan to Millan and later to Milan. From my gatherings I have discovered that my great grandmother was from Cuidad del Maiz, San Luis Potosi. Her name was Secundina Lopez and her son, my grandfather was Sixto Milan, for the most part we do not know for certain if indeed my grandfather was entitled to that surname or not because my great grandmother was renouned for being promiscuous. Any one with information will be greatly appreciated.
Thank You,
Margarita Milan
