Hi: I think that she was a grandaughter of Walter Mileham who came to Guilford CO. N.C. from Delaware. I am researching the Mileham family because of their connection to the Levi Ross of Summerfield N.C. The Mileham family lived in the Salisbury Dist. by Summerfield, N.C. If I come across anything I will let you know or if you have found anything let me know.
Need information pertaining to the Walter Mileham Levi Ross family connection of Kent CO. Delaware and Guilford CO. North Carolina. Apparently Walter the grandfather and Walter's son Samuel brought the grandchildren to North Carolina. I am related to the grandson of Walter's Levi Ross who married Mary Touchstone. He had two sister's Susannah Ross who married David Williams and Traney Ross who married William Burton first and then Elijah Witty Sr. They all settled down in Summerfield North Carolina.

Obit: Robert E. Mileham of Iowa (1930-2008)

Robert Everett Mileham, son of Homer E. and Nellie M. (Brennan) Mileham, was born January 26, 1930 near Cylinder, Iowa. A lifelong resident of Palo Alto County, he received his education at St. Mary’s Academy in Emmetsburg, graduating in 1948. In 1951 Bob enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, making rank of Sergeant and serving until 1953, when he was honorably discharged. Bob returned to Emmetsburg where he was employed at Mileham Produce until it closed in 1968.
On October 10, 1960 Bob was united in marriage to Mary M. Washington at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Ruthven. To this union three children were born.
Bob spent a majority of his time working in the manufacturing field, working as a purchasing agent (Pamline, Berkley’s, and Skyjack) and as a plant manager for Durnell Engineering. Never one to sit still very long, Bob held various other jobs both before and after retirement, the last being custodial work at the Emmetsburg Post Office.
Bob was a devoted member of Holy Family Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus. He was also active in the church choir. Bob had sung in the Many Voices Choir for several years. He was a very talented roller skater and still enjoyed skating. Bob will be remembered as a man who loved people. He rarely missed meeting his friends for coffee each morning and afternoon. His giving spirit continued even upon his death, as Bob wished to be an organ and tissue donor so that others had the opportunity to enjoy life as he did.
Bob died Sunday, October 19, 2008 at the Palo Alto County Hospital in Emmetsburg, Iowa at the age of 78. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; two brothers, Homer Mileham, Jr. and James Mileham; and an infant son.
He is survived by his children, Patricia Mileham of Valparaiso, Indiana and John Mileham of Kanawha, Iowa; a granddaughter, Kaleigh Lindholm of Hibbing, Minnesota; as well as many other relatives and friends.

Re: Mileham - Hitchin/Herford and London

Hello Michael,

The Margaret Aldworth who married Henry Mileham was the eldest daughter of my gg grandfather, also named Michael Aldworth. Margaret was born in London in February 1863 and later emigrated to the USA, where she died in 1958. I think James Mileham has already given you some detail on the US connection.

Margaret's parents were both born in Ireland, her father in Dublin, where he was baptised in January 1835, and her mother, Mary Ring, somewhere in Cork, probably in late 1836 or early 1837. Michael's parents were Richard Aldworth and Margaret Griffin and there were 7 other known children of this couple, 6 of them born in England; the family came to England sometime between 1835 and 1837.

My line is from the youngest known child of Michael and Mary, Annie, who was born in 1872. Michael died of TB in 1881, but Mary lived on in the US until 1928, having emigrated in October 1903.

What is your connection ?

Regards,

John Brown.

DNA Project update

Hello cousins,
1. We have not yet found the genetic connection between American Milams and English Milams. It is proving to be very elusive. So far, we have Y-DNA tested 8 UK-"Milams"........ 3 Milams, 2 Milehams, 1 Mylam, 1 Milum, 1 Millam. Interestingly, the 2 Milehams are in separate and distinct family trees and Haplogroups. Initially, it looked as if the Mileham with Norfolk ancestors was going to partially match up with us American Milams, but once the full test result was in, he did not match. :-(( So, the quest goes on. Do what you can do to help.

Currently, the primary focus is on locating Milehams, in both UK & US, for DNA testing. They seem to be the most fertile area for finding new information needed to better understand our Milam ancestry. FYI: there was a Mileham family in Delaware in mid-1700s, possibly earlier. Some of them migrated to NC, AL, KY, and points west. It's very possible they have living descendants today. DNA testing of their living male descendants could prove vitally important to us.

Remember, besides these Delaware Milehams, there was the well-known marriage of Samuel Mileham to Martha Gardner on September 8, 1724 in Christ Church Parish, Lancaster County, Virginia. There was even a Mileham in Plymouth Colony about 1675, as well as records of other early American Milehams. There is even an Allen Mileham (b. 1800), and his descendants, found in Tazewell & Lee Counties of Virginia, and our family trees. Allen Mileham is believed to be the g-grandson of John Milam of Halifax County. In other words, any number of these early Milehams could have become Milams in later generations. Who can say what the original spelling was, especially considering how many different spellings are often encountered in records regarding the same persons. We may have been Milehams originally, as has been often speculated.

In other words, some Milehams and Milams could very well be related, and DNA testing could prove it, or at least shed great light upon understanding the Mileham-Milam relationship.

So, again, the current focus is on locating Milehams, in both the UK & US, for DNA testing. Do what you can do to help locate Milehams for DNA testing..... for instance, look for them in your local phone book, call and discuss this with them. "There's GOLD in them there hills!".... help find it!

2. We have DNA testing underway for a new 2nd generation Milam Family of America branch.... Zachariah Milam's branch. recall: Zachariah is believed to be the son of patriarch Thomas Milam of Bedford County, Virginia. This very good news! We still have a few branches which have not been tested yet.... help find them. We need to verify them all.

3. Recently, we did SNP tests on a diverse group of American Milams in our DNA database to see if we could nail down more specifically where our Milams originated geographically. Prior to these SNP tests, our Haplogroup was only "predicted" to be R1b1c..... which is found in Western Europe, and predominately in the British Isles. The SNP tests VERIFIED our Haplogroup as: R1b1c. Recall, there have been rumors/speculation in the past that our Milams were from Wales, and Scotland, and Ireland. I was hoping to pinpoint the specific area of the British Isles, but that didn't happen. None of our 5 SNP test results provided that level of detail for some reason.

So, I guess we will have to discover that by comparison of Y-DNA testing results and traditional genealogy research.

More later. Do what you can to help. (I'm wearing down.)

See the latest Milam Family DNA Project overview at: http://www.milamroots.com/dna/index.html

Take care,
Oliver
Hello,
Living male Milehams are being sought for DNA testing for genealogy purposes. The Milam Family DNA Project group will pay for the testing. The goal is to determine whether the Mileham and Milam families are related, and if so, identify common ancestors. It could be very beneficial to researchers of both surnames.

FYI: The tesing is done entirely by mail, and is simple and painless (no blood).

Please help locate potential Mileham candidates for Y-DNA testing. Contact me at: Milam@Milam.com Also, see more details at: http://www.Milam.com.

Thanks for any help,
Oliver Milam
Deryn
Thanks, this is my Ernest, he married my great grandfathers sister and now I have just received a copy of their wedding certificate dated 16th June 1898. They married in the Parish Church in Holmwood Surrey, Emma's home village, Ernest is listed as a coachman from Croydon with father James Mileham (a stockman).

Any ideas how I can track Ernest and his wife (Emma Louise Moore) and their emmigration to Canada post 1901. I've tried but with no success. I think they went live in the Ottawa area.
Thanks
Heather

The only thing I have on Ebenezer and Ann's marriage record consists of a marriage return of Rev. Thomas Griffing. I may have misspoken about the Marriage Bond, as I do not have a copy. The part about John being her uncle came from Millie Belew and Marj Jones of Chippewa Falls, WI.

You are absolutely correct in that gg-gm NANCY MILEHAM was the daughter of EBENEZER and ANNA (DOUGHERTY) MILEHAM EBENEZER died in 1832 and her Uncle JOHN signed the marriage bond. I descend from NaNcy's son, EBENEZER MILEHAM GIBSON.

I have found 3 seperate records for what seems to be the same man - his birth date, wife , marriage date and place, wife (martha gardner) , and at least one if not all of his children and their info is allways the same . The only discrepencies are his place of birth and his parents - has anyone else found this? has anyone been able to resolve it? please let me know somthing this is driving me nuts. I've listed the info for each samuel below along with parents.

Samuel Mileham brn:1699 lancaster VA
married: Martha Gardner in 1724 bedford VA
father: John Milam brn: 1610 VA ( I know the date is impossible- it's not my mistake I swear)
mother: Christian
children: archibald 1729 VA, john 1725 VA, thomas 1727 VA

Samuel Milam/Mileham brn:1700boston MA
married: Martha Gardner in 1724 lancaster VA
father: Joseph Milam brn: 1652 boston MA ( oddly enough josephs' father is listed as john milam brn:1610 berkshire England - wife: Christian mmm where have I seen that before?)
mother:Hannah King
child: John Milam brn:1720 lancaster VA

Samuel Mileham brn:1700 Wales
married: Martha Gardner in 1724 lancaster VA
father: not listed
mother: not listed
children: John Milam brn 1725 lancaster VA
Thomas Milam brn 1727 lancaster
Archibald Milam brn 1729 lancaster

There are 10 children listed for John of 1610 and Christian, Samuel is the only one whose name is spelled Mileham - and the only one with an unreasonable birth date. Joseph Milam is one of the children listed - and he is also listed as samuels' father. I got all of this info from lds.org, steelpenny.net and rootsweb.com.

Re: John Mileham

Bob, John & Mary Mileham were from Guilford Co., N.C.. They came to Grant Co., Ky., ca. 1813 probably accompanied by John's brother, Ebenezer, and his sister & brother-in-law, Thomas & Sarah (Mileham) Simpson. The Children of Samuel & Elizabeth Mileham of Guilford Co., N.C. as listed in Samuel's will (made 25 Feb., 1795, probated May, 1795) were Sarah, Samuel, John, Ebenezer & Nancy. I have seen no later record of the children Samuel & Nancy. Samuel Mileham, the father, was the oldest son of Walter Mileham, possibly by an unknown first wife. When Walter came to North Carolina his wife was Ann Fitzsimmons, but I doubt that she was the mother of Walter's two oldest children. At any rate, Samuel & Elizabeth & family; Walter & Ann & family; and possibly the Ross grandchildren mentioned in Walter's will, all came to Guilford Co. ca. 1787 from Kent Co., Delaware. I have for some time had an uncompleted manuscript on these Milehams in my computer. If it is ever completed it will probably be published in "The Guilford Genealogist". I have already published an article there on the three Ross grandchildren of Walter Mileham (see vol. 26, no. 2, pp.95 - 102;Some Ross and Witty Families).

By the way, even though the E.E. Barton Collection in Falmouth, Ky., has Nancy Mileham (md. Philip Gibson) and her siblings as children of John Mileham, I wonder if they could have been the children of Ebenezer & Ann (Daugherty) Mileham. The early censuses seem to indicate that both families had children. I do have copy of the deed (Bk. N, p. 445) but the wording of the deed is such as to leave uncertainty in my mind and the 1850 census entries does not seem to settle the matter. Do you have thoughts on the matter. One other thing, I have data on the two Simpsons who were married to two of the Milehams in Kentucky, if you are interested.

Hi Heather
Just read your message. Ernest is not directly linked but I reckon all the Surrey/Hants /Berkshire Milehams are kin. This is what I have on Ernest:

1881 census Living at East Green, Bentley, Hants

Ernest Herbert Miliham, born Binsted, Hants about 1875, son of James (aged 49,born Bentley) and Elizabeth (born Binsted). Several siblings.

A James Mileham was born about 1831, son of George. Lived at Heath End, agricultural labourer. Aged 26, married Elizabeth Atford (or Atfield), 21, on Jan 31st 1857 at Hale.(got this from Surrey History Centre when looking at all Milehams in the registers. The age fits).

There are 3 possible Georges that I know of. Most likely is the son (born 1810) of Henry and Jane of Farnham but this is only a guess.

Hope this is of interest.

Deryn.

My great grandfathers sister Emma Louise Moore married an Ernest Herbert Mileham in the Dorking area of Surrey (probably Capel) in 1898. They lived in Putney in 1901. Ernest was a coachman and at that time they had no children.
The couple emigrated to Canada post 1901. My great aunt Elsie (82) remembers that her Aunt Emma had a position in the Canadian government offices, however contact was lost with the family c 1930' / 40's.
Is Ernest Herbert in your list of Milehams?? Do you have any knowledge of their family in Canada?
cheers
Heather
James,

I can't help with the Mileham tree, but Henry (b 1860/1) married my g grand aunt, Margaret Aldworth. They lived in Tonawanda for over 35 years and were living at 104 North Niagara Street, Tonawanda in the 1920s, together with Margaret's mother, Mary Aldworth, who was my gg grandmother. If you have any info about Mary, or about descendants of Henry and Margaret, I'd love to hear from you and can exchange what I know about Margaret's side of the family.

John Brown

Lewis C. and Elizabeth C. Mileham

I'm the great-granddaughter of Lewis C. Mileham (b. Sept 26, 1853 in Indiana, m. Jennie Belle DeHaven). Lewis had a sister Elizabeth C. "Lizzie" (b. Dec 29, 1866, d. May 5 1959, m. Henry Warren Parks) who is not linked in any way to Lewis C. in the ancestry.com database perhaps because their parents are not yet identified, and that is my question -- who are their PARENTS and other upline? I understand there were other siblings, at least one girl who married a Jablonsky/Jablonski/Zablonski in Chicago IL (this is according to a tape made by my grandmother c. 1978). I turn up nothing in a search for this sister. I have turned up the following who may be related: A.K. Mileham, and Lewis Mileham who could be father and grandfathers etc of Lewis C. and Elizabeth C. but I can't make a definite connection. It's also possible that's an error and they aren't related at all. In my searches today, and from the Milam family page,
I notice that Mileham is a less-common spelling, so might
make this line easier to spot? also that Lewis was a fairly
common men's name among all spellings of Mileham/Milam families. Further, I've noticed that it was extremely common to name a child after his grandparents, hence my curiosity about candidates above.

Re: Lewis C. and Elizabeth C. Mileham

Right after I posted the above, after working on the question
all day, I remembered I already had the answer, and almost none of it is in the ancestry.com database as of this writing.

This is taken from an obituary notice for Mary Ann Lacker (b. Dec 21, 1826 in Indiana, d. Jun 9 1903 (date unclear could be 1883). Moved to KY in 1826, and to MO in
1860. She married J.D. Mileham on Nov 23, 1848 in KY, in her 22nd year. 8 children blessed this marriage: Mary A. born Oct 21, 1849, Martha C. born Feb 17, 1851; Lewis C. born Sept 26, 1853; Charles E. was born June 12, 1856, Gramille P. was born Aug 5, 1858; John was born July 26, 1860; Lizzie C (Elizabeth C) was born Dec 29, 1866; William D. was born Dec 1873, d. May 1874. It is noted that 3 of the above children were living at the time of Mary Ann's death.

These 3 living children would be Lewis, Lizzie, and the other sister mentioned in my previous post. The unknown sister is Gramile, Martha, or Mary A.

So it would seem this Mileham line derives from KY, at least since the early 1800s. Does anyone have other info to add going farther back?
The date of birth for Mary Ann Lacker may be Dec 21 1820, not 1826, hard to tell from this paper, but given the rest of the context re moving, it's actually more likely to be 1820.
