jerryi have noticed a spelling error for "lue" ella miles-keiffer. on her headstone it is spelled Lou Ella Miles-keiffer. i know they are the same because you info matches my family knoledge. lou was my grandmother. though i know little on her. but cemetery matches as well as other info. my father jim mann keifer was her youngest son. the keifer spelling changes with her last two children because my grandfather leonard keiffer had a falling out with his father. if you are anyone has any info on them that would be great. she only has one living child and we found out she has cancer. all the rest of my aunt and uncle past away from cancer and heart problems. i can share this info if you are close to the miles family lilne through lou. my email is angelk19@juno.com

According to the parish registers. There was a Helen Church born in 1867 in Ardington to William (b1836) and Mary Ann Church (b1841). This William (b1836) is the brother of Edmund Church (b1830) son of Thomas Church(b abt1804) and Susan (Susannah) Belcher (b1810). (both Thomas and Susan born West Hendred and married there) So I think you'll find that in the 1881 Census Helen is Ellen, Edmund is Edward and his mother Susan Church is Susan nee Belcher (b1810). William and Mary Ann are in the 1881 census in Ardington. Martin Ferrier www dot martinferrier dot com

Obituary: Marvin Travis Miles

Marvin Travis Miles, 76, United States Navy Seaman (1951-1953 USS Walton DE 361), passed peacefully in the comfort of his Carson City, NV home

Marvin was born Oct. 5, 1933 to Calvin and Dorothy (Parker) Miles in Los Angeles, Calif. In 1972, he moved to Carson City where he raised his family. He worked for Carson Tahoe Hospital until 1992, when he retired as Chief Engineer.
Marvin loved his family, life and the outdoors. As a hunter and avid fisherman, he treasured his outings with his good friend Bob, but they usually brought home more “fish stories” than fish.

Marvin was preceded in death by wife, Betty (Nelson) Miles, his daughter, Linda Miles and by sister, Clara Erickson.

DO NOT REPLY FYI ONLY

I have found Aaron and Alice Myles who where the parents of Frederick, Mary, Reginald, Dorothy, Joseph, Hubert, and Bertha, Apparently Aaron had a child from a previous marriage called Abigail, and adopted a child called Maud? Now the census of newfoundland in canada had previously had the name written MYLES and somebody crossed it out and wrote MILES. So it makes me believe that it was either an error, or Aaron came from somewhere else, possibly elsewhere in canada or for some reason i think it might be Ireland

any help with this would be awesome!

Your great grandpa Frank Abercrombie Miles married my great-grandpa's sister: Mary Blanche MacGibbon. My family tree shows they had 9 children. I have the 9 names and whether they married. I also have script showing children existed, but only 1 spouse is named (Joseph Radcliffe married Helen Alma Miles and had 4 children named Phyllis, Robert, Kay and John). The tree also indicates that Phyllis and Kay married. Much of this section of the tree is missing information, probably because they left Canada. I would assume that Mary Blanche MacGibbon would be your great-grandmother, making Edward James MacGibbon your g-g grandfather, John MacGibbon your g-g-g grandfather and Lieut. David MacGibbon your g-g-g-g grandfather. David was a British Empire loyalist who married Anne Drummond whose father Donald Drummond came from a storied family with Scottish royalty ties. Hope this helps a little.

According to Bardsley In "English and Welsh Surnames in America" - the name is originally Flemish-from Belgium- and they came in with William the Conqueror 1066. There is a Messr di Milo-Gentleman of the Mill- on the 1200 Rolls. I read one online that said that in Radnorshire Wales there were a lot of Mills-lots of millers-who cahnged the name to Miles.

Re: Mille, Mile, Myle or Miles families from North Wales

Hello John.
My ggg aunt, Louisa WYNNE married a Robert Mile, Myle or Miles, in Ruabon.
The name changes depending on where you look. My family name also varies in the records between WYNN and WYNNE, depending on the whim, or literacy of the individual, or census enumerator or registrar.
Robert and Louisa married on 25t July 1840. She was born about 1821. I believe he was born on 15th April 1820.
Robert's father was John, possibly born 28 May 1792. My notes say that in 1824 he was a farmer, but he was later described as a jagger, which could be a fish-peddlar, or more likely a carrier, or someone who manages carts/wagon somewhere like a colliery.
Robert and Louisa had Elizabeth (c1840), William (c1842), Mary (c1847), Thomas (c1850)and Charles (20 June 1852).
Louisa died 12th March 1857.
In the 1851 census (the only one I can find them in), they were living in the Red Lion, Gutter Hill, Rhosllanerchrugog, where Robert was a publican, I believe (HO107, 2503, 377, 78).
Does this match any of your information?
Best wishes,
John

I'm on your line! I don't know if anyone will see this, but I connect at Benjamin Miles (1789-1870) married to Esther (Starne) Miles (1798-1876).

If you can, I need Benjamin's middle name, and parent names. He's my Gr.Gr.Gr.grandfather, buried in Leverington Cemetery, Roxborough, PA. We're in the Radnorshire, Wales line. I can track forward to my father, Benjamin Cottman Miles II, (brother is the III)but can't find anything to keep going from this Benjamin Miles in your line. Anything you offer will be greatly appreciated.

I'm looking for information on Miles Smith, born in NC in the early to mid 1840's, served in the Civil War and married Elizabeth Simmons in 1865 in Wilkes County, NC. 1880 Census in Alleghany County, NC lists 4 children, Nancy J., age 13, Laura A., age 8, Major S., age 6 and John Wheeler, age 3. Indications are that he was a cabinet maker and had a shop in Sparta, NC in 1890. I would appreciate any information on this family.

Marie Chatman

My James Miles of Penn Yan was somehow related, but I can't be sure if he was a brother or cousin. It sounds like your information might give me some clues. I'm not aware that my James had a son, Patrick, so maybe my James was a cousin. Thanks for sharing this.

Levi Miles - Modest Miles - Mary Miles

I am looking for information on Levi Modest Miles. He was my great grandfather, his son Willlie W. Miles was my grandfather.

The 1860 census shows him living East side Cahaba River, Bibb County, Alabama with Mary Miles, who we presume is his mother he was age 4. They were living in the household with Isaac Smith, Mary Smith and children Samantha Smith & LaFayette Smith.

The 1870 census shows him in Precint 3, Baker County, Alabama. He was age 14, his name listed as L M Miles. Also living there were Elisa Miles age 12, James Miles age 8, and Julia Miles age 6.

He was also known as:
Levy Miles
Levi Mardis
Levi Martis Miles
Levi M. Miles
L.M. Miles
Levi Martin Miles
Mardis Levi Miles
Modest Levi Miles
Martis Levi Miles
M.
Re: Nancy Miles of Kentucky

Since the Hales used the given names of "Caleb" and "Armstrong" over and over, I am not 100 percent sure I've identified the Armstrong you seek. It may take several back and forth messages to give you the info you need. There is a Meade County, KY birth record that shows an Alexander W. Hale, born Aug. 6, 1857, to Armstrong and Mary Shacklett Hale. Meade County marriage records show that on April 17, 1854, an Armstrong Hale married Mrs. Mary Wim. Mary was described as a widow, born in Meade County. Armstrong was described as a widower, born in Mercer Co., KY. Using this data, I've concluded that Mary's maiden name was Shackett. In the 1850 Meade Co. Census, we find Armstrong Hale, age 50, listed as the head-of-household. He was a plasterer. It shows his state of birth as KY. His first wife, Julia, is also shown. She was also age 50, but was born in Virginia. The only other member of their household was Horace Cox, age 2. Later, I'll explain who he must have been.

This Armstrong was at one time known as Armstrong Hale Jr. He was born in 1799; he died in Meade Co. in 1859. In 1821, he appears on the Ohio Co., KY tax list for the first time. It is in Ohio County that he married Julia Ferguson on Jan. 8, 1829. Armstrong and his bride must have moved to Meade County almost immediately. They were recorded in Meade County in the 1830 Census. Armstrong is in the age 30 to 40 category and the person who must have been Julia was in the 20 to 30 category. I figure he was 30 and she was still 29. On Mar. 13, 1832, Armstrong and Jesse Hall purchased 300 acres in Meade County from Josh Ferguson. (Deed Book B, page 170) I believe that Armstrong lived in or near Brandenburg, as he was granted a license to operate an "ordinary" there on Mar. 24, 1834. He was also shown in the 1840 Meade Co. Census. He was in the 40 to 50 age category. His household included a female in the 5 to 10 category and 2 females in the 40 to 50 category. One of these must have been Julia, his wife. I speculate that the child was Elizabeth Hale. She married eight years later on Feb. 17, 1848 to Charles Cox. Elizabeth was young enough that she needed the consent of her father, Armstrong, to marry. I believe the 2 year old Horace Cox in Armstrong's 1850 household is the child of Elizabeth and Charles Cox. The evidence that I've just covered indicates that either Julia and Armstrong didn't have very many children or most of their children died young. The Caleb Hale that you mentioned in your message was a brother of your Armstrong. Their father was known as Armstrong Hale Sr. Armstrong Hale Sr. was the son of Thomas Hale of Franklin County, Virginia. I have much more. All of this is in my book From Glen's Creek to Ellmitch. I have only my copy left, however there are copies in several libraries near Owensboro, KY. Tell me what you would like to know next.

A cousin, Harry Miles, appeared in town about 15 years ago, researching the Miles "tree". His branch of the family apparently went west. He wrote this wonderful compilation of his findings. Your Christopher was one of the entries. It's a 4 page document and I'm not sure how to share it on this board. Christopher's brother, James, had a son Patrick, who would be my husband, James Simmons, grandfather.

I am researching my Miles relatives, the Hereford connection around 1840. My father's mother was Beatrice Miles b1896 in Smethwick. She married Edward Lloyd-Davies and they lived latterly in Ledbury and she died in 1965.
She had a brother Ernest James Miles b 1898 who married Gladys Woolgar. (My dad's uncle Jim and aunty Gladys.)
Their father James H Miles b 1872 was a blacksmith in Handsworth. He had loads of siblings: William 1862, Albert 1864?, George 1867?, Sarah E 1856 - is she the one who married Edward Crump?-, Clara J 1870?, Anna M 1871?, Rose A 1875?, Frank 1879?, Gertrude 1886?.
His father was William Miles b 1840? born Kingsland Hereford and a cooper. In 1901 his widow Ellen and children Frank, Gertrude and William were all single and living together in Handsworth.
He had a brother Edward 1836? also born in Kingsland but I can't get any further back than this!
If anyone can help me with these, my dad would be really pleased, he's 80 now and doesn't know a lot about his roots. The Lloyd-Davies side is even more of a challenge!

I believe that William Miles born in 1831 in South Carolina is my great, great, great Grandfather. You mentioned you were looking for descendents of William Miles. I am looking for more history (i.e. the parents of) William Miles. Perhaps we can help one another?

I don't know if you are still looking for variations on the Miles surname from Ruabon but I am engaged on the same quest. My surname is Miles and I am the great great grandson of Robert Miles who I believe lived in Ruabon in the 1850's although I have been unable to find him on any 19th century census returns. He must have been widowed because he had a son, Thomas, in about 1850 and then moved to the Potteries where he remarried and had another son, my great grandfather also Robert. Robert senior died in a pit disaster in 1881 just weeks before the 1881 census on which his widow, Jane Hawthorn appears along with her tow sons, Thomas, and my great grandfather then aged 11.

I know that Robert senior's father was called John because that name appears on his marriage certificate to Jane but I know no more. John was a farmer. There is a reference to a Thomas Myles being born in about 1852 in a village near Wrexham but I don't know if that is he.

Have you anything further on that line? I see that you consulted my tree a day or two ago. What is your connection if any to the Miles Family?

regards

John Miles

Thanks for your prompt reply, John. My late father and I did some research a couple of years ago in Ruabon Library where they have copies of various local parish records and turned up a number of references to Miles families. I certainly noticed the ones to which you referred but Robert's birth year appeared to be wrong from the information on his second marriage certificate and on his death certificate which both had him down as born in 1822 as he was said to be 38 years old in 1860 when he remarried and 59 years old when he died in February 1881. I also saw the reference to the Red Lion at Gutter Hill on a birth certificate that I obtained for a Thomas Mile born at the Red Lion on 25 December 1849 to Robert and Louisa Mile (sic)I know that my gg grandfather was illiterate because he and my gg grandmother only made their marks on their later marriage certificate so it is possible that they also did not know how to spell their surname. My g grandfather changed from Miles to Myles at some stage and then back again and my grandfather's surname is also shown in both spellings either side of 1900. Incidentally, Jane, my gg grandmother was a Hawthorn, sometimes spelled with an e on the end, but also as Hartharn! Her first marriage was to an Ebrill, also Evrill, Habrial and Abilla! It seemed to depend on the accent of the person and the literacy of the census taker.
Your ggg Aunt's name is spelled Wynn on the copy of Thomas's birth certificate that I have and she only made a mark on the record as the informant. Gutter Hill still exists but I do not know if the pub is still there.
The Ruabon library records refer to two Robert Miles baptised in Ruabon, both sons of John and Elizabeth. One was on 20 October 1817 and the other on 15 April 1820. It is entirely possible that the first one died in infancy and they reused the name for the second one. There was also a Thomas baptised at Ruabon on 22 March 1822 as son of the same couple, John being described there as a jagger, which I took to be a carter. Where did you get Robert's date of birth from and that of his father John?
I am keen to go back as far as I can in this line as I am a direct descendant. On my mother's side I have progressed as far back as the 1650's because her family all lived in the same village for several hundred years - and some of them still do. On the other side, there were Scots but I have not go very far on that side - only to about 1780 or so. I have a friend whose brother lives in or around Penycae just outside Ruabon and he has asked his brother to see what he can do with the Clywd FHS and whether it is worth my joining. Of course, my gg grandfather might well have come up from South Wales as there are a number of Miles families down there and he seemed to be prepared to move around to get work.

Regards,

John

My name is Jackie Eldon Miles, second born son of Morris Leroy Miles. I was born on March 22, 1945. His first born, my older brother Glenn Leroy Miles is deceased. My mother, Morris Leroy's first wife, Liddie Juanita, is deceased. My parents divorced when I was an infant. I never met my father. I recall seeing his brother Leo vaguely and as a child my mother would take me and my brother to see our paternal grandmother. I don't remember much about those meetings. I have one portrait of my father, sitting on a porch railing wearing a US Army uniform. His sisters lived nearby, but we never communicated.

Betty,

I am a living relative of Jesse Miles. Jesse married Retta Copper and had the following children:

Frances, Justice, Lois, Robert and lastly Earl (1933)

Earl Miles is my father and I do remember grandma Retta and all my aunts and uncles. They have all passed.

Jesse Miles passed away when my father was young. I have some information on Jesse, but I don't know why he was raised by the Hurst family (per the 1900 census).

Doree Miles
doreemiles@yahoo.com

I have information on Jesse Miles. He was my grandfather.

It appears Jesse and his brother Orval (Orville) were raised by the Hurst family. This is the piece that is puzzling. I don't know much about Jesse's father or mother.

Why were the two boy's raised by the Hurst family.

Jesse's oldest child was my aunt Frances and his youngest child, Earl was my father born in 1933.

Doree Miles

I am having dfficulty in finding a birth register for Emma Miles. We know she was born in 1891/2... she married Harry Batchford in 1910 in Nottingham. On her marriage certificate her father was named as Samuel Miles from Nottingham. Shi isn't mentioned in the 1901 census but is mentioned in the 1911 as married as Emma Batchford and living with her husbands family.
There is a great mystery surrounding this lady. There are family tales of her being adopted into the Miles family...HELP!!! I at a dead end?
