Milka was my mother's last name(Sandra Milka). My grandfather Peter Milka lived in Elgin Illinois, and I am unsure of the names origin. I was told it was either German or Polish as our family is both Polish and German.

looking for relatives

My grandfather was Stephen Joseph Milka and I think he immigrated to America around 1911. He had a brother that also immigrated at or about the same time and his name was Andrew Milka. Stephen was born 10-15-1896 in Kazimierza Wielka, Poland and died 02-18-61 at Salem,WI. Andrew was born 11-25-1893 somewhere in Poland and died 05-08-62 in Chicago, IL. Their parents were Joseph and Katherine (Szuster) Milka. Stephen was married to Paulina Humitowicz. Andrew was married to Sophia Stawarz. That is about all I know. I was wondering how the best way is to find out about my polish relatives, or was most of that distroyed during wars etc. Thanks for any information You can contact me at my e-mail address: mcase@advertisnet.com

Reply to Elmer Milka about possible connection

I don't think we are related, but for years I thought that my family were the only Milka's in America. My father is deceased and so I have very little information about our past. This is all the information that I know. My father (Chester Stephan Milka-deceased)and his sister (Lorraine Pauline (Milka) Kuczkuda-deceased) were born in America to Polish immigrants. Their parents names were (Stephen Joseph Milka Paulina (Humilowicz) Milka). Stephan was born in Kazimierza Wielka, Poland on 10-15-1896 and came to American about 1911. I was always under the impression that Stephan came over with his brother (Andrzej later changed to Andrew Milka) on the same ship, but I can not find Stephan's name on the manifest, but it is very difficult to read the blurred manifest. Andrew was born on 11-25-1893 also in Kazimierza Wielka, Poland. Andrew and Stephan's parents names were (Jozef Milka and Katarzyna (Szuster) Milka). All of these people are gone now and I don't have much more information at this time and don't even know where to turn for information in Poland, so this is all I will probably ever know. Let me know if you have any information that can help me find relatives in Poland. Good luck and thanks for contacting me.

I had someone take pictures of the tombstones in recently and unfortunately there was none for John Krank. I only have his listing from the cemetery list from St. Adalbert's Cemetery.
I suspect he was buried shortly before 1897. I do not have any other info about him except he is buried next to Maryanna
Milka who is either his sister or his daughter. (I believe it is his daughter.)

Hi Diane The only name in your response was Felix Maza.
I searched my memory bank and as youngster( 60 years ago
I recollect the name being mentioned in conversations around the house. Best I can do. The Maryanna and Joseph Milka's are completely unknown to me. Did you check registration at
St Adalbert's for any others. Have a good one

The name Maza rings a bell. No Frank was not my grandfather
but I remember my parents going to visit some Maza' s in the southwest suburbs of Chicago. I think my dad's sister thru
marriage had relatives with that name. I have no plot numbers
in St. Adalbert's cemetery, but most of my relatives are buried
there, a lot of Milka's. I moved away from the Chicago over 40 years so I lost track of alot relatives. Good to hear from you none the less.

Cici: The names you gave are not fimiliar to me. I estimate my grandfather arrival in US around 1885 to 88 according to washington dc archives. all my relatives(aunts, uncles, etc,)are in st adalbert's cemetary. Do you live anywhere near schaumburg. my immediate famil-ly all moved to calif in late 40's, early 50's so i have really lost track of a lot of relatives. Names like kowalski,(i think this was my grandmother's maiden name)my one aunt married a rostenkowski. Did you say Leon and Josef were possibly brothers? Do you know if they lived anywhere near Poznan, poland as this is supposedly where my jaja was from. be waiting to heaar from you?

Milka info:

Augustyna Milka's parents were Jozef Milka and Maryanna Kranka. They lived in Chicago and Augustyna is buried alongside her mother and Maryanna's brother, John Kranck (Krecki, Kranek) at St. Aldabert Cemetery in Niles, Illinois. I Think they arrived to the US at a port in Maryland in the 1880's. There is a listing with many of the family names in German's to America, if they are the same family. I do not have much more info.

Milka

I looked up the information in German's to America and this family:
Joseph Milka, age 52, Origen: Germany
ship: Weser from Bremen to Maryland.
His wife Marianna Milka, age 40
children:
Leon, age 8.
Joseph, age 12.
Franz, age 5.
Josefina, age 5 months.
------------------------------
In Maryanna Milka's obit. dated 25 April 1897, Chicago Ill.
husband: Josef
children:
Augustina,
August,
Jozef,
Leon,
Leokadya.
It also lists a brother, Bernard and two sisters; Julianna and Aniela.
------------
In the listing of St. Adalbert Cemetery: A plot purchased by Franczek Maza were buried.
Maryanna Milka
Augusta Maza
John Kranck
Jozefa Milka
Franczek Maza
Edward Maza
Agnes Maza
Jos. Kozlowski
Helen Ann Maza
Felix Maza
---------------------------
I believe this is all the same family.
I don't live in Illinois any more so I cannot check on any other information as to other family plots. I got my information by writing to the cemetery and requesting it. I also believe the family might have actually come from the Poznan area.
Some of this info may help you, I hope so.
: )

I think I got the info on the www.pgsa.org site. It has many Polish marriages that took place in Chicago Catholic Churches and a lot of other information. It's a great site.
Leon would be my great uncle as Augustina Milka Maza (his sister) is my great grandmother. I am not familiar with the names; Peter and Arlene.
(I live in Phoenix)
