Matthew Lackey, tradition says, was born in the North of Ireland of Scotch parentage. He was in Upton, Massachusetts, as early as 1733. In 1734 he had been occupying property which was sold to Samuel Work.

Marriage intentions to Rebecca Wark (Work) are recorded in Upton, Mass., July 2, 1737. She was a member of the Hopkinton church in 1729, and was no doubt, the dau. of Samuel and Elizabeth Wark, early Scotch-Irish settlers of Hopkinton about 1719.

According to the minutes of the Selectmen of Boston, Mass. (Vol. 15, p. 89), Matthew Leeckey (Lackey) arrived there from London, in 1737 in the New England Galley. He was a woolcomber by trade and was given liberty to open a shop to carry on his trade.

He settled in Upton, Mass., and was one of three men who owned land by purchase outright in the Hopkinton district. He was a selectman in Upton in 1774. Deeds of various dates to his sons and others are recorded among the early land records of Hopkinton and Upton, Mass.

Samuel Lackey who died in 1785 (Probate Record) was probably his brother. His property adjoined Matthew’s and he being the next of kin, was appointed by the court to settle the estate. Matthew, being in poor health, sent a substitute.

Matthew Lackey made his will Dec. 14, 1789. The will was probated April 17, 1790. In it he names his wife, Rebecca; sons: John, Matthew, Nathan, Samuel and James; daughters, Rebecca Stearns, Mary Kelly, and heirs of daughter Elizabeth Boon. Son Nathan was named as executor. (Probate Records, Middlesex County, Mass, at Cambridge, Mass.- Probate Record No. 13475) Inventory of his estate was taken on April 16, 1790 and was valued at 110 pounds, 1 shilling and 5 pence.
