In reply to your message, I am unsure at present of my grandfather Elijah's d o b but he was certainly from the Staffordshire area. He was born either in 1873 or1874 as he was slightly older or slightly younger than my grandmother Esther who died in 1965 at the age of 92 years.I believe he had relatives, (brothers or sisters) who lived in the Tunstall and northern end of Stoke on Trent, possibly Halmerend. Meir is the southern end, and he lived in the Meir area following his marriage. Thanks for the advice.

Hi Peter,
You didn't give your Grandfather's age or DOB in your post. Do you have any more info on him?
May I also ask if you are certain that Elijah was from Stoke or is it an assumption that he was as your recent family live there - i ask only because i searched for ages for an ancestor in Lancashire only to find out that he was from Yorkshire!
I've looked on Genes Reunited and there is an Elijah M born 1864 who would have been 71 in 1935 BUT this one was born in Warwickshire .......... possible?
Regards,
Ian H

That's ok. My thinking was that families often married between themselves, and it seemed like coincidence that you mentioned Millington and Law. I was thinking that maybe Abraham Millington had married a Lancashire lass, and it may have been one of his descendents who married into the Law family. Alfred Law was originally from Tipton, Staffs, and Abraham was born in Bilston, Staffs. However, if you can find no connection, not to worry. I always find that it's worth squeezing every tiny bit out of a possible lead, just to make sure that I haven't missed anything.
I would be interested to see the sources for these (apart from the LDS database). I have seen these individuals quoted on familysearch.org and many family trees but I am very sceptical about their genealogy.

Parish Registers in England do not begin before 1538 so Thomas' birth and death as well as that of William and the birth of Agnes must be from another source. Any ideas?

Paul

Hi Carol.....I was refering to Lesleys comment about Abraham Millington marrying a Lancashire lass...that one, who is born, according to all the records that I have been able to access so far...did marry a Lancashire lass in his second marriage to Elizabeth Borrows Wood. BUT his first marriage was to my great grandmothers sister, Emmeline Elizabeth Heath. Emmeline and her sister (my gr. grandmother)Harriet were married at the same time at the same location and witnessed each others weddings. I would love to find out any information on Emmeline's children (she died giving birth?? to her first born ..also named Emmeline...so did her sister Harriet..Harriet died giving birth to my grandfather) and also the children of Abraham's second wife, Elizabeth...

Thanks ever so much

Marlene

Delta BC
mgraham@wsi.ca

I have an Abraham Millington (born 1851 in Bilston) who did marry a Lancashire lass...she was his second wife, Elizabeth who is from Warrington. His first wife was Emmeline Heath who died giving birth to their first child, Emmeline. His first wife is my gr. grandmothers sister. She was born in the States. As the story goes, her parents, newly wed packed up all they owned and headed off to New York in about 1840. Ten days after they arrived the Mom gave birth to her first child, Emmeline's sister. Then twenty years later (and having 5 children in the States)Civil War broke out and they packed up the five kids and headed back to the safety of old England. My grandfathers mother was the second born child and if I hadn't found diaries with this information in it, I would have never known that his mother was American...not British. I would have just assumed that his mother and all of her siblings such as Emmeline were born in England. My grandfather came over to Canada in 1910 to homestead in Saskatchewan.

I would really be interested in any information about Abrahams children and grandchildren.

Thanks ever so much

Marlene

Marlene Graham
Delta, BC Canada

If I were you, I'd pursue the following men found in the 1820 census:

William K Millington Little Falls,Herkimer,NY Nathan Millington Russia,Herkimer,NY
John Millington Warren,Herkimer,NY

Asa Millington Vienna,Oneida,NY
Gates Millington Vienna,Oneida,NY

Forget about Nathan in Russia, Herkimer, NY. I've seen who his children were and none were named Thomas.
If you follow these men in future census records, you might be able to determine when they were born and get an idea of who might have been the right age to have been the father of Thomas. They were all in the column in the 1820 census:
26-45, so you need to narrow that down some.
I also saw on Rootsweb Global Search there was a Thomas Ransome Millington, b. 1804 who was the son of Gates Millington of Bennington Co. VT
Good luck!
Linda G.

Possibly. Now, my great-great-grandma, Harriett Millington (nee Traunter), living in Sedgley in the 1871 census, and widowed by this time, had one daughter called Emily. She married Alfred Law, a miner, who had been lodging with the family. Both Emily and Alfred were born 1854. In the 1881 census, Harriett (called Hannah by some error) was living with them at 697 Atherton Road, Hindley, Lancashire. Harriett's youngest son, Abraham, born Bilston, 1857,was also there and also a miner. There were other sons noted in the Staffs censuses, but as far as I can tell, only Abraham migrated over that way. Possibly helpful?

Well, I don't know whether it is a lead, but my great-great-grandpa was William Millington, born circa 1810 (dates vary a bit in the censuses). His place of birth was given as Edgmond (transcribed as Edgemont)in the 1851 census, and Waters Upton (transcribed as Huton Upton) in the 1861 census. I haven't found his parents as yet, but if he was a sibling, it might be William and Sarah. He married Harriett Traunter, born 1816 in Oakengates. If you check the map, Edgmond and Waters Upton are only about 4 miles apart. Love to hear from you.

Hello,

I found William and Sarah and an extended family line at this link

http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/AF/family_group_recor...

and although I think that there will be a relationship somewhere along the line, my ancestor at William's generation would be Isaac, son of Francis Millington and Ann Rushton. William's father was Richard, so I might just check to see whether there is anything to link Francis and Richard as brothers, maybe, as I haven't found out who Francis's father was as yet.

I'll let you know if I come across anything.

Kind regards,

Carol.
