Ok if the story that my uncle told me is correct...here goes...my grandfather was george washington mimbs...and was born in florida but his ancestors were from the carolinas..they had some outlaws in the family back then ..so as to not be associated with them they dropped the second M and added a B in its place...so the story goes.
Plus as I am finding out for myself it wasn't anything for them to drop or add a letter back then. My grandmother was Olavee Mimbs and her name on my moms birth record was olavee mims but on her birth record it was spelled with the B in it..as well as on her mom and dads tombstone. Sorry I don't have anymore info at this time.
