Dear Ciaranmines,
Please forgive me for such a long delay in answering your e-mail.
Thankyou for your offer of help, you are in fact the third person from your area to do so,which opens up a completly new line of investigation for me.
My Mines family seemed to have originated in Wiltshire in the 1700's,but where they came from before that I do not know.
if you have any info of any of your Mines moving to that area, that would be good to know.
Of course any info that I have, that you would like to know, please dont hesitate to mail me.
Regards kirby154.

Oh goodness Dan. I just really don't know how much stuff I have. It's kind of here and there. I know where most of the pictures are. In summer I'm always out in the yard. Winter time is project time. Once I close the pool down then I'm usually inside for the winter and bored. I'll start digging things out and organizing it. There was so much stuff when Daddy died from 2 families. I never took the time to organize it between families so it's jumbled. Most of it relates directly to Nellie's generation and stuff of her husband's family as well.

I saw a posting from a lady in Chattanooga that has the Ireland documents and I'd love to get a copy of those. I'm familiar with the Tennessee crowd and that part but the Irleand stuff I'm very fuzzy on.

I do have the family photo album. I think the family bible is with Debbie, Imogene's daughter. I used to have it but it got "removed" from the house when Grandmother was sick. A lot of things disappeared because Jean and her mother Pearl would sit with Grandmother and tell the paid sitters to go home. They pretty well cleaned out the joint.

I do have pictures and those death notices. A piece of a shroud and the paper with the locks of hair. I have the trunks they moved to Tullahoma with. Those would probably not be of any interest to anybody but me. It was strictly Grandmother's family's trunks. I have all the quilts they made down in the holler. And that big chest of drawers that supposedly came over on the boat in 1846. At least that's what Gladys told me.

No, nothing of family value has ever left this house and won't. I have sold off a lot of Grandmother's stuff but it was strictly indicative to her. Just junk and old furniture that was not in the best of shape. Nothing direct family oriented as far as historical documents.

Glady's granddaughter has sent me new pictures I've never seen so we are culminating all our stuff and sharing amounst each other. Once the fall sets in and I'm stuck in the house for the winter I'll start organizing things better. I just always took that stuff for granted. I never thought in a million years I would have relatives tracking me down. It's amazing.

The original washbowl and pitcher from the farm is at my sisters. I've never had any of this stuff appraised or dated. I'd love to have that chest of drawers dated but there is nobody around this area to do it and it's way too big and heavy to move frivolously.

My number is 931-434-0158. Be glad to talk to you anytime and tell you anything I know.

Hello
Thank you for info. I would like to know all old items you do have. I would like to find out if I could get copies of some of the photos. I have been on facebook and contact with many family members in Atlanta. Those items are of great importance to. Please take care for them and if I could ever see them would be of great value to me.

Hi Dan,
My other two sibs are Theresa Bernadette Weller (Mines) and Josephine Ann Olshaske (Mines). All five of us are well and living in or near Muskegon, MI. My mother's name was Bessie Mae Reed (Mines)deceased 1998; before traveling on she extracted a promise from us to meet socially at least once a month (which we do, at local resturants). After my 2000 post I moved back to MI (after living 45 years in CA!) and live near Muskegon, in the country, (rural, not rustic!)
We are all getting on, from 75 years old on down, and are enjoying life!

Best to you,and all, Stephen Dorman Mines

Hi Dan,

Gosh there are so many entries for this family. Well...it was a huge family.

I am the grandson of Sarah Ellen "Nellie" Mines Gray. Most people remember her as "Aunt Nellie."

She was the daughter of James K. Polk Mines. If the photo you are describing is the one I have with the old man lying dead on a bier, Grandmother identified him as her father, James K. Polk Mines, not Felix. So that would be interesting if it really was Felix because Felix was one of the original immigrants from Banbridge Ireland in 1846.

However, I think I have his death card somewhere. Like modern funeral notices you pick up at the funeral home, these were cardboard like the backing of all those old pictures. I think it was Felix's. I know there is a Blythe in there too. I'll have to dig for those.

Another creepy thing I have is a lock of everybody's hair! I don't know who did it. Probably Grandma Mollie but they are sewn to a piece of paper with everybody's name on it. It's getting really fragile. There is also a fragment of a death shroud. Black material with bright red hand stiching. Can't remember who's it was right at the moment. And don't ask me why they saved all the grim stuff.

I've never learned how they got into Estill Springs. From Irleand to the US and then nothing. I don't know where they all spread out to and how many of them wound up in Franklin Co. I know Grandmother talked about cousins in Estill and there are a couple of pictures that she couldn't identify the names.

James K. Polk was Felix's eldest son and his children were:
Emmett
Maurice
Felix (Pete)
Sarah (Nellie)
Gladys

Around 1912 after the mill in Estill burned, they moved to Tullahoma. Uncle Pete and Grandmother stayed in Tullahoma and Uncle Emmett and Uncle Maurice moved to Georgia. Their father was a very bad alcoholic and very mean. Grandma Mollie, his wife, left him and married Thomas Collier. Nellie flip flopped back and forth between loyalty to her Mother and her Father. Nellie and James K. got in a huge fight and Nellie left him. Neither Nellie or Uncle Pete would have anything to do with him.

James K. fell and broke his hip and refused to have it set so he walked with this horrible gate the rest of his life. Uncle Maurice was about the only one that could handle him so Maurice and Emmett moved him down to Georgia with them.

As far as the cemetary, I will bet you your bottom dollar it is under water now. The original farm was just over the tracks from downtown Estill Springs very close to the mill. I have a picture of all of them standing on the front porch of the original home place. But I can certainly do some snooping for you. There ain't that many graveyards in Estill. Of course if it's back up in the woods I won't go until after the first frost and the snakes are gone.

With the creation of Tims Ford Lake, that land was flooded. It was down in a holler. Daddy took me down there one time but I couldn't tell you where it was today.

I would say the family cemetary was on their land. Their farm was next to General Floyd Wright's parent's farm. If you search old deeds, the Wright's and the Mines lived next door to each other.

Uncle Floyd went off to WWI when he was dating Gladys and told Aunt Gladys that when he came back from the war he would marry her and he did. They immediately moved to New York in 1918 or 1919.

I have the Mines photo album and there are quite a number of pictures from Grady's family. A few from the Blythe's which was Grandma Thomas' family. I've just recently scanned all of those for Gladys' granddaughter. Would be happy to share.

I also have the original piece of furniture that came over on the boat in 1846. Don't ask me how all this stuff wound up down here. LOL! I'm sure there is lots more.

Felix (Pete) got most of it. That was Nellie's brother. Their Mother lived a block away and had all the family stuff. When she died, Nellie was the closest to her and couldn't go clean the house out. Just broke her heart, so Pete took it all.

Pete's eldest daughter, Imogene, kept it all and she recently died. I'm sure her daughter Debbie has it all now. Hasn't quite been enough time yet to hit Debbie up for any family goodies.

We had the family bible but when Grandmother was dying, Jean and her Mother would come over and clean that house out. A lot of stuff disappeared and I'm the one that's supposed to be the peace keeper so I've never said anything about it. We hid all the pictures and things like that so they survived.

Grandmother used to talk of cousins in Estill Springs when she was growing up. I have the original photo album and before Grandmother died, my Mother sat down with her and wrote the names of the people on the backs of the photos. There were 2 or 3 that she couldn't remember the name and said they were cousins from Estill. Be glad to share those with you. My Grandmother was Sarah Ellen "Nellie" Mines. Daughter of James K. Polk Mines.

James K. Polk Mines was the eldest son of Felix Mines that immigrated from Banbridge Ireland in 1846.

I'm not sure where the spin off of the cousins begins in Estill Springs. James K.'s Family was:
Sarah (Nellie)
Emmett
Maurice
Felix (Pete)
Gladys

They all moved to Tullahoma after the mill burned in Estill Springs somewhere around 1912. Sarah and Felix stayed in Tullahoma. Gladys moved to New York and Maurice and Emmett moved to Cartersville/Marietta Georgia. They also moved their father down there after his divorce and breaking his hip. He was a bad alcoholic and Nellie took care of him for a while but they got in a big fight and she nor Felix would deal with him. Uncle Maurice could handle him so he and Emmett moved him down to Georgia with them.

Pete and Pearl

Pete was his nickname. His real name was Felix. Another Felix. There were tons of them. If you remember, he was a barber and had his own little shop next door to their house on Volney Street in Tullahoma. Both the house and the shop are still standing.

Uncle Pete was my Grandmother's brother. Felix and Sarah Ellen "Nellie" Mines were sibblings and they lived a block from each other most of their lives.

Uncle Pete married Pearl Bailey. She was sister to Durwood "Nig" Bailey. Nig's wife's name was Alma. They lived right in behind me on Volney Street as well. Pearl's sister's name was Eunice. All of them lived on Volney.

Pete and Pearl had 2 children, Imogene (Jean) and Linda.
Jean married a Thompson and divorced. They had 1 child - Debbie.

Linda lives directly in my back yard. She married Donald Frazier and they had several children.

If there any questions regarding Pete and Pearl that you may have I can certainly ask Linda. She literally lives in my backyard. Our houses are that close. In fact, Donald took part of my back yard to plant his garden this year. LOL! Well, at least I don't have to mow it and I get free veggies.

But to answer your question about knowing all the Mines - Lord. There are so many of them. LOL! I have dozens of cousins I've never met. Just about any Mines in this area of Tennessee I'm related to distantly.

Well, I was supposed to have been new the house. Okay? LOL!!
I was an oops. See, Nellie was 38 when she had Daddy and Mother was 31 when she had me so due to 2 late babies - yes, I'm much younger than most of the brood. Ricky? Oh good lord yes.

I have very old pictures of Grady, Emil and Alma. That would probably be your great grandparents or maybe grandparents. You are definitely the same line of Mines, just from a different sibbling from Felix Mines' humongous brood. James K Polk Mines was the eldest.

Uncle Emmett was the one I remember most. But of course I was very young when they all died. Mevelyn was Mother's favorite and Mother was the carpet queen so we used to go to Dalton a lot and visit with Mevelyn.

Daddy never took me down to Georgia and by that time, they really couldn't make the trip by themselves. I met Uncle Maurice once when Ivanor brought them all up.

Oh Pearl. Nuff said. LOL!! She and Jean lived one block in behind me. Honey, when it comes to the cousins there are so many of them I can't remember their names. LOL! I'm closer to Pearl and Pete's family. Linda, their daughter, still lives right behind me. So I'm close to that bunch. Debbie, Shollie, Malia, Skyler...

I wasn't around the Mines that much. Daddy didn't take me around them. They alienated Mother so she had nothing to do with them. Jean and Pearl lived behind for years and I rarely ever went back there. Just within the last couple of years have I really gotten involved with them. Basically, I really didn't know who they were!

Alan. My father is Felix Grady and my mom is Rachel. Pete was dad's cousin. He and Pearl used to come to our home when I was young. By the way, YOU are young! I am 60 and my oldest child is 40. My grandma was Evie and papa was Leo. Pearl used to come to mammie and papa's house too when I was young. I grew up in Tullahoma but have lived in Hillsboro for 30 years. Do you know any of the Mines boys in Tullahoma? They are: Larry(lives in Illinois), Johnny, Ricky,Ray, Mikie, Jeff and my brother James Willis passed away 5 years ago. My sisters are Gail Mines Austin, Patsy Mines Newman, Rebecca Mines Chambers and Melissa Mines Smith. I am married to Kenneth Dodd. There are boy cousins who are Mines' and cousins who are Bradfords. I met Maurice and some of dad's cousins from Georgia many years ago. It would be nice to meet you. If we have our Mines family reunion this fall I will let you know. Take care and thanks for the information. Janice

Oh you're not being bold sweetheart. Ask anything you like. If I can't answer it, maybe some of the others can. Like myself, most of us are familiar with out direct line of Mines. Let me tell you, they were a "happy" bunch and each of them had a bazillon kids. They also named their children the same names over and over again. Felix is the most common and it is so hard to determine WHICH Felix.

I'm 42 and have always lived in Tullahoma. My line of Mines comes from Estill Springs. Then the boys branched off to Cartersville and Marietta Georgia.

James and Catherine - first to leave Ireland in 1846
They had several children. My branch comes down the line like this: (also read the very first entry. It has great info on all the wives and children)

Felix (James and Catherine's son) had 3 wives
James K. Polk Mines - (Felix's son)
Mary Elizabeth "Mollie" Thomas Mines - wife
Felix (or Pete nickname)
Maurice
Emmett
Sarah (or Nellie nickname)
Gladys
Sarah was my grandmother. Uncle Pete (Felix) always lived in Tullahoma. He only had 2 children Imogene and Linda. The rest of the family from Imogene and Linda's kids all still live in Tullahoma.

So it's finding the right Felix. I don't have all my notes in front of me.

You are in Chattanooga? You may be from the Georgia line. Uncle Emmett's daughter lived in Dalton and her name was Mevelyn if that sounds familiar. Ivanor was another of his daughters and bounced around northern Georgia. I can tell you all the kids names - I think. LOL! From there I don't know who they married and so on.

What happened was they settled in Estill Springs, TN. The boys worked in the mill. When the mill burned around 1912 they all came to Tullahoma to find work. Emmett and Maurice left for Georgia to be closer to Atlanta for work and started their families there. They were late teen's early 20's. Eventually they moved James K Polk Mines down there with them.

Sarah and Felix stayed in Tullahoma and raised their families. Gladys married and moved to New York in 1918 and started her family there. We are all over the place. LOL!

You may not have heard of the house on Carroll Street but you may have heard of Grandmother. Most people called her "Aunt Nellie." That's how I associate myself with distant family and even relatives here in town there's so many of them.

To tie me into the game - Sarah Ellen "Nellie" Mines married Ruby Gregory - divorced and then married Horace Gevilla Gray.

They had one son - John Robert Gray, my father.

Some of it is as clear as mud to me too. Feel free to call me any time. 931 434 0158

Alan

Hi. This is all very interesting but I still can't seem to connect the dots. My grandfather, Leo Francis Mines, was the son of Felix Mines. I think Ellen was his step mother, tho' I could be wrong. I'll have to ask my mom. Perhaps we can get together and talk. If I may be so bold, could I ask how old you are? I just don't remember anyone ever talking about the house on Carroll Street. So interesting. Thanks for the information. jmd

I have early pictures of a Grady Mines. Same family with Emil. I have a picture of the whole family and then one of Grady and his mother. The Mines were so famous for naming their kids the same names over and over again, this may be Grady's grandfather or something. Still interesting though.

Thanks,
Alan Gray (Grandson of Sarah Ellen "Nellie" Mines)
Tullahoma, TN

MINES in Asia (Philippines)

My name is Antonio P. MINES Jr., 27 years old, Filipino, from Davao City, Philippines. My father is Antonio V. Mines (born in Iloilo, Phil. 1952), his father Vidal Mines (deceased). Does anybody know a MINES ancestor that migrated here in the Philippines? Or Spain maybe, because the Spaniards colonized the Philippines long time ago. I don't know whether we got the family name genealogically, or just adopted it. It just seemed unimaginable that MINES originated from a far foreign land.

Any information will be appreciated.

Good day! My name is Antonio Gonzalo P. MINES Jr., I'm 27 years old from Davao City, Philippines. I'm Filipino. I was just surfing through the internet and searched about the origin of my family name (got curious). To my surprise, there really is an origin of the family name MINES, but never imagined it would come from a far foreign land. I know that there are lots of people with similar family names but aren't related. So I don't know if somehow we are related distantly or not at all.

I've read your thread and I just would like to ask if you know or searched about a "MINES" that migrated to the Philippines? or maybe migrated to Spain? Because the Philippines has been colonized by the Spaniards long time ago. I haven't ask my father about this yet, and I never met my grandfather because he died long before I was born. But my grandfather was born in Iloilo, Philippines.

I'm very thrilled with the idea of having to learn the origin and history of our family name, even if we (the Mines' of the Philippines) didn't exactly get the name genealogically, and just adopted the name. But who knows, maybe we are really a part of the MINES Family Tree and Genealogy.

Hope you can give me even a little information about this. Thank you very much.

Hi Dan,

I actually don't have much info on the Mines family aside from the fact that Amy J. Hall married Felix Mines.
I believe that Amy's father John Hall was the brother of my g-g-grandmother Minerva Hall. I was trying to connect with the Mines family to see if anyone had any info on the Hall family. Wish I had more Mines info to share with you.

What little Mines info I have came from the Mines Surname Board at Rootsweb-so this isn't my research.
The Mines immigrated from Banbridge Co., Downs, Ireland in 1846.
The immigrant family consisted of James Mines, wife Catherine Devlin[Dealin] who arrived in Philadelphia on 23 Nov. 1846 on board the "Cornelia." Both born 1811 in Ireland.
Children all born in Ireland: Felix born 1835; Ann Louise born 1838; Bridget born 1840; Jane born 1842; Catherine born 1842, and Mary born 1845 & died on the voyage.

Felix was in Maury Co., Tn. in 1860 with first wife Ellen Long who died by 1867. One child- James Knox Polk Mines. Married Amy J. Hall, who died in 1887. Seven children-- Thomas F., John, Annie, Mary Ellen, Sarah, Felie Etta and Leo Francis. Married third to Mary E. Walker, 3 children Robert William; Michael; and Stephen Dorman Mines.
Felix Mines died 6 NOv. 1908 in Estill Springs, Franklin Co., Ala.
Like I said, this is not my research, so I have no sources to confirm any of it.

You did help me though. I didn't have John T. Hall's wife's maiden name of Lavender. Nor did I know when and where Amy J. Hall Mines died, or the names of her children.
I didn't know when and where Felix and Amy married either.

Any idea how they came to be married in Bedford County? Bedford County is quite a long way from Fayette County where Amy Hall lived.

Janet

Mines family in Augusta County VA from mid-1700s

From census and other sources I know there were several Mines's in Rockbridge and neighboring areas in Augusta Co. in the mid 1700s and to the present. Once in a while you see the spelling with MYNES but I haven't seen that in any records that I can prove are in my family. My Mines branch started out there, moved to Clarksburg, WV, then out to Warren, OH, and other places. Still can't find a connection between my Mines's in Augusta Co. and others there at the same time. The furthest name back that I know is Peter Mines, born about 1751. He married Ephy Martin, a Scotch-Irish woman, and is listed in DAR records and received a RevWar pension, died 1825. If anyone here is related to other Mines's in early Augusta Co, please contact me at cmmines@yahoo.com Thanks.

Re: Mines Family

And I have to correct myself. I had Felix on the brain last night and kept getting interrupted. Nobody bothers me at home until I sit down at the computer and THAT'S when they won't leave me alone.

Nellie's Dad was James K. Polk Mines. I see where you have down that he died in 1947 in Franklin County. He was moved to Cartersville/Marietta with Morris. I think he is buried in Franklin County but Morris was the only one that could handle him and he lived in Cartersville. I'm not sure when he moved but Daddy was five when they went down for the family reunion so that would have put it around 1937, 1938. Grandpa Mines was there then.

And again, when I say Morris, I mean Maurice. I always knew him as Uncle Morris - that's the way Grandmother spelled it.

I never did get to talk to Gladys that much. Her daughter Cecilia was very abrupt. I would call Long Island on my quarter and Aunt Gladys had a separate phone line. Before very long, Cecilia would be heard on an extension, "Mother! Get off the phone now." I only wrote down a very few things that she said and she had wonderful knowledge. Her mind was sharp as a tack at 100 years old.

Cecilia was a beautician and she had a very swanky hair shop in New York and catered to people like Susan Lucci from "All My Children." So the Tennessee bunch was considered trash and she would have been happy for us to just have disappeared. We were never informed when Aunt Gladys died for fear we would come tromping up there for the funeral. Gladys was about the only sibbling I had contact with. I never really knew the boys. Daddy was the one that kept in contact with them.

Jean knows more than anybody so I plan to pick her brain. I plan to take a tape recorder over there one night very soon and record her conversation as well as having her identify these pictures I have. By the time I got around to asking Grandmother, she didn't even know her own name practically. She got very senile and was a handful. Mother tried to sit down with her and get some names and she did the best she could and wrote the names on the backs of the pictures.

There were some candid shots taken at the Fairgrounds here in Tullahoma in like one of those photo booths with silly costumes. That would have been very early 1900's.

A couple of pictures intrigued me as a child. There is a little girl with a big fan pleated dress posing in dance and another where she has on a definite Victorian outfit. She had long ringlets. Grandmother told me her name was Corrine and that she was a professional dancer and a cousin. Jean verified that but I don't know her last name. If they told me, I don't remember.

I have a very good picture of all of the sibblings close up when Mollie died. They were all in for the funeral in Tullahoma. Mollie and Grandmother were very tight and Nellie was devistated when Mollie died. She couldn't bring herself to clean out the house so Jean and Pearl took everything and then the argument set in when Nellie asked for family stuff. Jean and Pearl felt like she should have been there when Mollie's things were divided out and that she should have helped with the chore of cleaning out the house. Since she didn't, Nellie got nothing and Jean and Pearl kept it all.

There was a washbowl and pitcher from the farm that Nellie had and Jean wanted it so bad that she could taste it. My sister wanted it so Sharon got it after Nellie died. I guess she still has it. She might have sold it in a yard sale. She's sorta famous for that. That's why I've held onto it and not shared it with Sharon.

I still have most of the stuff. Mother took most of the glassware and Nellie wasn't even her relative. We weren't allowed to go into the house until after Mother decided what SHE wanted so who knows what was still in there. I know Mother sold some things on Ebay which really made me mad! I found a couple of boxes of Grandmother's stuff in Mother's attic marked, "To Sell On Ebay." I snatched them and put them in an unmarked box in my attic which is very sad. I can't display them or have them anywhere in sight until after Mother dies and they weren't even hers to begin with. So its a struggle. Daddy tried to intervene but was snuffed out. He tried to slip stuff to me and my sister but the dollar signs showed too brightly and Mother stopped him.

So for historical sake, the line for me begins with Grandmother. So

Sarah Ellen Mines Gregory Gray of Estill Springs/Tullahoma
(1897 - 1988)
married 1929
Horace Gevilla Gray of Ovoca/Carroll Holler
(1886 - 1959)

They had one son.

John Robert Gray (named after his grandfather)
8/29/1931 - 3/11/1999
married May 1, 1955
Shirley Christina Lawson - 7/16/1935

Their children are:
Sharon Elizabeth Gray Waller - 4/28/1956
Robert Alan Gray - 11/1/1966

I have no children and never married.
Sharon has two - John Brandon Waller 1979
Evan Gray Waller 1989

Brandon married Beth Daughtery and has 2 children
Grayson 2007
Hannah 2005

Evan is not married yet and has no children.
Re: Mines Family

Hello. I am the grandson of Sarah "Nellie" Mines Gray. I was stunned to find this on line by just randomly typing in Grandmother's name. I still live in her house in Tullahoma.

First let me tell you that I have an amazing piece of furniture. Nellie's sister Gladys, who moved to Long Island after WWI, called me one day and said, "Do you still have that huge chest of drawers that was in Nellie's woodshed?" Yes. "Well don't ever get rid of that. That was the one piece of furniture that the Mines carried with them on the boat from Ireland." I have it in my bedroom.

From what I was told, they were allowed only one piece of furniture to pack all their belongings, food and everything else in and I have it. I have lots of pictures as well as my cousin Jean who really has a lot of things that came from the farm in Estill Springs. When Grandma Mollie died, Jean and her Mother took everything from the house and Jean still has most of it I believe.

I have the trunks that the Mines moved from Estill to Tullahoma in. Grandmother was born in Estill in a hollow that is now under water by Tims Ford lake. I have a picture of all the kids and elders sitting on the front porch of the family home.

Grandmother told me that Estill was a boom town due to the "Tennessee Mill Company." I can't remember what year it burned. 1912 maybe? I have the picture of it burning. Everybody was employed by the mill. Grandmother went to school at "Winchester Normal" in the old "Mary Sharp College" building in Winchester. I have her text books with Winchester Normal stamped in them.

The old building was several stories tall and Grandmother was at school on one of the upper floors. She said somebody said the mill was on fire and they all ran to the window. You could see the massive blaze from that high point. Grandmother said she cried and cried because she knew that was the end of Estill Springs and it was.

Grandmother made hats and Mollie was a seamstress to try to make ends meet. I have all the old quilts they made from the farm. Granpa Mines was a severe alcoholic and very abusive to Mollie. He eventually fell and broke his hip and refused to go to the doctor so the bone grew back funny and he walked with a frightening gate after that.

Mollie was the first to move to Tullahoma I believe after the mill burned and she left Felix. She started having an affair with Thomas Collier and eventually divorced Felix and married Thomas which was quite the scandal, but if you know the Mines, once they set their mind to it - they don't change.

Felix eventually moved to Tullahoma and Grandmother was very torn over which one to hold loyalty to and she bounced back and forth between their houses. Finally Grandmother and Felix got in a hell of a fight and she left. Uncle Morris moved to Cartersville Georgia and eventually brought Felix down there where he died.

One of the stories Daddy told was that they went down for a family reunion when Daddy was about 5 and that he saw Grandpa Felix sitting on the porch by himself and nobody talking to him. Daddy felt sorry for him so he went to speak to him and Felix screamed, "Get away from me you little bastard!" Daddy went crying to Grandmother and she chewed him out. Later that night Grandmother put Daddy in a feather bed to sleep. He woke up being eaten alive by bed bugs. Grandmother said she saw the bedbugs when she put him in bed but didn't want to embarass the family and say anything. DUH!

Grandmother contracted both Tyhoid and Scarlet fever when she was very young from drinking from the cistern at the farm. She told me, "Mama always said not to drink the water unless the gudgens was a swimmin' in it." It took me years to figure out that it was mosquito larvae she was talking about. If they were floating belly up in the water - so would you! She had horrific high fevers that made all her hair fall out and severly damaged her hearing. We also think it fried her brain because she was really really DENSE!! Argumentative and dense!

After that she was enrolled in a Catholic School in Winchester and she quit after she and the headmaster got into it. The kids were seated alphabetically and Nellie was at the back of the class. She couldn't hear what the headmaster was saying and he would whip her in class so she quit. She carried that bitterness with her for the rest of her life and would say, "I didn't wanna know all them nuns secrets anyway!" We never understood what that meant. Vow of silence maybe?

She worked as one of the first telephone operators in Tullahoma but got fired partly due to her hearing and partly due to her temper. She would show up when she wanted to and when the supervisor asked her why she didn't show up, Nellie told her she had house chores to do so the supervisor fired her. She also listened in on people's conversations and spread the gossip.

She first married a man named Ruby Gregory and he moved her to Illinois for a short time. Mollie sent her letters about how she missed her and Nellie whined so much that Ruby told her to go home. At least that was Grandmother's story. She probably fought with all the time because she was a spitfire. They divorced.

Then she was working as a waitress at the "Minor's Restaurant" in the Hotel King in Tullahoma. She met my Grandfather, Horace Gevilla Gray there. He ran a bus line and a "U Drive It" service (I have his business card) from Tullahoma to Shelbvyille. His offices were at the King Hotel. Mrs. Martin said Horace was dating this girl hot and heavy and the whole town thought that he would marry her. She said, "The whole town was SHOCKED when he married Nellie! She was cute. She wasn't pretty, but she was cute and she was fiesty."

Horace stayed at the Maple Boarding house where the city hall is now and Grandmother went out of her way to walk past the boarding house where Horace would be sitting on the porch rocking. One day he hopped off the porch and asked to walk her home and that started a romance. It was a scandal because Nellie was a divorced woman. My sister said, "Old Horace knew what he was doing! Nellie was an 'Expuranced' woman!" We all laughed about that.

They married in 1929 and when we asked Aunt Glayds Gray about the wedding she said, "How would I know? We weren't invited!" They ran off and got married in Shelbyville.

They lived with Mollie at first on Jefferson St where Ms. Martin lived after Mollie died. Mrs. Martin was their neighbor and she talked about the fights Nellie and Horace had. They lived upstairs and had a fight one day and Horace refused to sleep with her. He moved to the sofa. By God that was NOT going to happen! So Grandmother took the matress off the bed and started dragging it down the stairs and she tripped and fell down the stairs. Horace got up and said, "Serves ya right Nellie!" And left.

They only had one child, my father, John Robert Gray. Grandmother said she couldn't have anymore children. Aunt Glayds Gray said, "HMPH! She found out it hurt! THAT'S why she didn't have anymore!"

They then rented the upstairs of another house on Jefferson St. where Daddy was born. In 1933, Horace bought the old livery stable that was used as a Civil War headquarters on Jackson St. and opened "Gray's Garage." It was a service station and very successful. During WWII he had the contract with Camp Forrest to provide Kerosene and service all the military vehicles. He had top clearance at Camp Forrest.

In 1935, he built the house I live in now from land bought from Doak Adeylott's estate. One street behind, Volney Street, Uncle Pete, Nellie's brother lived with his wife Pearl Bailey Mines. She was Durwood "Nig" Bailey's sister. They had two children, Jean and Linda. Jean lived back there for years until she got elderly and sold the house. Linda lives in my back yard on property given to them by my Grandmother in 1962. I still see all the Mines on a regular basis. In fact Jean's only daughter Debbie was over here the other night.

Uncle Pete ran a barber shop on Volney Strett that still stands. I have one of the original stools from the 20's that looks like an old fashioned ice cream parlor chairs that came out of the shop.

There's just oodles of stuff here and I honestly don't even know what I have anymore. I have the family photo album that was one of those ornate books but the pages got so brittle I took the photos out. They are all the old cardboard type photos and I have no idea who these people are. I am taking them to Jean over Halloween to identify. She is in her late 80's and has lung cancer now and living with her daughter Debbie.

I remember the whole family coming over to visit Grandmother but never was really acquainted with the Georgia bunch. I remember Uncle Morris but not as well as the local bunch. Pete died 2 months before I was born. I don't know what happened to the family bible. It used to be here but while Grandmother was on her death bed a lot of things came up missing and I'm not saying who we are pointing fingers at but I bet I know where it is.

There are all kinds of things here. There is a piece of paper that has locks of hair from all the mines with their names on it. Kinda gross but interesting. I have Grandpa Felix's death picture of him laid out on a bier.

Daddy had all of this stuff hidden and after he died I found it all in boxes under his bed and behind furniture. I had inquired about the family picture because grandmother had shown it to me but Daddy said I was crazy and no picture existed. I found it behind his filing cabinet after he died. The Mines are a peculiar bunch and very dedicated to family but very selfish in that aspect as well. The covet and want to be the only ones with the goodies so its been kinda hard for me to see family heirlooms. But now that I'm older its getting a bit better and I'm just now getting back into that family and sharing stories.

They are all amazed at the stories about Grandmother! She had a temper and a half! She and Aunt Pearl fought all the time. Grandmother was a very simple country woman and simple I mean the elevator really didn't go all the way to the top. Very dense and we seriously believe it was from the fever because none of the rest of the kids were like that. Tempers YES - but not that dense.

Her sister Gladys was a real swinger. She lived to be 103 and even on her 100th birthday, she STILL got in her wheelchair and flew to see the Kentucky Derby each year on her birthday. She would come to down in a Winebago wearing hot pink pants suits and a blonde wig and this was in her 80's! Grandmother just always thought she was showing off.

Gladys married Floyd Wright who lived on the farm next door to them in Estill. Floyd joined WWI and came back for Gladys and immediately moved her to Long Island where they stayed from like 1918 until they died. Grandmother was always making fun of Gladys' accent and saying, "But yew's from Estill Sprangs!" Nellie used to make fun of the way Uncle Floyd walked on his toes and Gladys shot back, "WELL AT LEAST HE DOESN'T MAKE THE DISHES RATTLE IN THE CHINA CABINET WHEN HE WALKS NELLIE!"

Gladys said, "Nellie never had any friends and never went to parties. I did."

There are lots of other stories I could tell but its night night time. Holler back at me. My email is anesthesiacare at bellsouth.net.

Alan

Oh yeah, Grandmother said she never understood why Grandpa Mines called her Nellie, "My name was Sarah." But everybody knew her as Nellie. The same with Pete. His real name was Felix and Grandpa called him Pete.

So Felix Anthony had two children - Jean Mines Thompson, Linda Mines Frazier
Nellie had one son - John Robert Gray
Gladys had one daugheter - Gladys Cecilia Wright

From there it just gets complicated. I never knew Maurice was the correct spelling. Grandmother always spelled it Morris in letters she wrote. Morris was her favorite. She and Pete fought and she did talk to Emmett quite a bit too.

Grandmother was 91 when she died. She was very special to me and I spent tons of time with her growing up. She worshipped the ground I walk on and still does! Yep, she's still seen hanging around here. Several people have seen her including myself but I told her pretty quick to leave me alone.

I was really interested in all of the information that you have on the Mines' family. I was just wondering if you may know anything about my grandfather on my Dad's side of the family. His name was Charles Mines and as far as i know he lived in Illinois and married Genevieve. I am not sure what my grandmother's surname was. If you have any information please e-mail me at rachlm@charter.net. I am very eager to find something out about my family history and no one in my family really seems to know. Thank you in advance for theinformation.

Re: Annie Rebecca Green - Virginia

I have some info on Annie Mines Green. She was the half-sister to my ancestor, Rev Charles Mines.

Sources 4 June 1880 census Bath County, VA, lists Wesley Mines, Catherine Mines, Morgan, Eliza, Lina, Charles, Andrew, Nela, Annie (6) and Florence.

4 Aug 1870 census Bath County, VA, lists Wesley Mines, Betsey Mines, Morgan, Eliza, Lina, Charles.

19 June 1860 census, Bath County, VA, lists Wesley Mines, Betsey Mines, Morgan (1).

1 Aug 1850 census Bath County, VA, lists William Mines, 30, Margaret Mines 49, John Mines 22?, Morgan 18, Wesley 13, George11, Martha 26, Mahala 6.

I believe this is Margaret Pritt who married John Mines on 2 Jun 1818, Bath County, VA. John Mines must have died before 1850.

I have a letter from Lina Mines lawer distributing her estate to my great-grandfather Charles Mines, dated Oct 22 1925. "I am distributing to Mr. Morgan Mines, to Mr. C. W. Mines, Mrs. Nelia Webb, the children of Mrs. Annie Green and the children of Mr. Andrew Mines, one full share of $125.00; and to the four half-ssters, Mrs. Laura Thomas, Mrs. Ollie Well, Miss Mamie Mines and Mrs. Florence Rose, a one-half share as the law directs of $62.50 each."

It would seem from this letter that Annie Mines Green died before Oct 22 1925. It would also seem that Morgan, son of Wesley Mines and Betsey Sprouse, was a half-brother to your Annie Mines Green, daughter of Catherine ? and Wesley Mines. I bet your Morgan Henry Mines is the descendant of one of Wesley's brothers.

Hope this helps. When I started this, I knew little to nothing about our Mines ancestors. Keep me posted on your research. I cannot find the elusive Mamie Mines, but she obviously existed. You ever hear of her?

Mines Family U.K.

Is there anyone currently researching the family name Mines in the U.K?
Most of my findings on here are of family ties in the U.S,which I dont think applies to my lineage.
I am the daughter of a Felix Mines, who emigrated to Western Australia in the early 60's
He was born circa 1913 and believed to have originated from Cambridgeshire, and had at least one sister, now deceased, called Anatole.
I have no information on my grandparents, other than my grandfather was a university professor of one of the sciences, who died in a science laboratory fire, sometime during the 50's.

If any of this information has come to light during your research I would love to hear from you.

You mentioned a Herman Mines in your research of your lineage. My father's name was Herman Mines from NYC. Born in 1908 and died December 7, 1950. My previous posting listed my address as dyermines@rtmx.net (that e-mail is no longer working).
