http://gailstapestry.com/id106.htm
This site continues with the history of Matthew Mingo

Matthew Mingo
It is thought that the Mingo's married into the MicMac tribe who lived in the Tatamagouche area of Nova Scotia. Family stories handed down from previous generations say it is true.
In 1809, the three Mingo brothers and their father came from Philadelphia to finally settle on the back road to River John. This was the area of Tatamagouche which means place where two rivers meet in the language of the MicMac Indians.

It means a farmer, a dweller in the country. It is thought to refer to the large body of “freeholders” or small land owners called “yeomanry”.
Another theory points to the name as Anglo Saxon in origin meaning small red deer. An old English family of Hynde had just such a deer, or hind’s head on their family crest.
It is possible that Mary Hynds was of MicMac origin. At the time of her marriage to John Mingo in 1814, a large tract of land in an area known to have been MicMac territory, was acquired by John Mingo. Perhaps it was some sort of dowry.

Here is some information that I have come across which may help in determining the origins of the "Philadelphia" Mingo families.

In a book entitked, The Blacks in Canada by Robin winks on p. 104 the following information is found:

"Almost upon arrival in Pictou, (Rev.) MacGregor had purchased the freedom of a slave girl from her owner, Matthew Harris, undertaking to pay 50 pounds over three years, giving up three-quarters of his first years' income to the purpose. When Smith charged him with owning a slave, he was not yet the legal owner. MacGregor had also persuaded Harris to give a mulatto his freedom, and he bought the indenture on a Negro woman for another ten pounds. The slave girl married George Mingo, a Black pioneer and they became respected members of MacGregor's congregation, while the mulatto married a Swiss woman and moved to the United States."

More detail is found in the Memoir of the Rev. James MacGregor by George Patterson, p. 151. Here are some exerpts:

"Strange as it may appear at this date, the settlers who had come from the Old Colonies to several parts of Nova scotia had brought with them slaves, and retained them as such for a number of years. among others, the late Matthew Harris was the owner of a coloured girl, who afterwards went by the name of Die Mingo, and a mulatto man named, Martin...She was afterward married to George Mingo, also a coloured person, who had served during the first American war."

In the book, Fire On The Water by George Elliott Clarke, p. 122, we find this entry:

"Dr. MacGregor also secure the freedom of Harris' slaves, Diana Rhyno and her husband, George Mingo, who had served in the American War of Independence."

It is known that Matthew Harris was part of the Philadelphia Company. The Captain of the Philadelphia Company was a Scots-Irish pioneer from Ulster who had been a farmer, inn-keeper, and Indian trader before coming to Nova Scotia. On page 132 of the book, Scotland Farewell by Donald MacKay the following information is found:

"Dr. Harris was heartened by the arrival of his elder brother, Matthew, with his wife, their six children and three black slaves - Die Mingo, Abram and Martin." This arrival was in 1769. George Mingo must have arrived in the area after the Revolutionary War, presumably in 1783 or 1784, and may have been granted land in what had been the Philadelphia Grant in exchange for his service.

The Harris brothers had spent some time in Maryland as well. In a book entitled Colonial Chesapeake by Deborah Myers and Melanie Perrault on p. 97 there is mention of an African slave named Joseph Mingo who arrived in Charles County and married a white consort of Welsh descent, Elizabeth Thomas. Some of their children took the surname Thomas, others kept the surname Mingo. One son was Charles Mingo who began an "illicit relationship with a white servant girl named Mary Curtis." One Charles Mingo came from Maryland. "He served in the English army and when peace was declared the English sent him to Nova Scotia. From Nova Scotia he came to Boston, Massachusetts, and later to Tatamagouche, Nova Scotia. He was one of three brothers. One brother, George Mingo, settled on George Island near Halifax, Nova Scotia. The other brother settled in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania."

Was this "other brother" our Matthew Mingo (perhaps named for Matthew Harris?). If so his father may have been of African ancestry and his mother of Welsh ancestry. His wife could have been of Native American or Canadian Indian ancestry. Could she have been a daughter of the "mulatto" man named Martin and his "Swiss" wife? In any event, these are some possibilities for consideration as to the origin of the Mingo families of the Tatamagouche, Nova Scotia region.

I wonder if anyone that is descended paternally from Matthew Mingo has done a Y-DNA testing. This could help us identify the actual origins of the Mingo family.

Hello, I am just starting doing geneology of my own and looked up this site and saw your message about Mingos in nova scotia. Now Im not sure if I can be much help today on Elizabeth, but I am a Mingo. You say she was an indian woman possibly from PA. The only knowledge I have of american Mingos is that there is actually a native tribe near new york that are Mingo. She could have used her tribes name as a surname but it is more likely that she was from Mingos here.
Now my current knowledge is that we came across on boats as Mingeaux, a french name. Which I witten on a statue once somewheres in NS. (I could get you more info on that later, my memory fails me) It was somekind of settlers memorial...anyways.
I will check the records my family has done allready for your elizabeth and matthew. hope i could help.
-Bailey Mingo, Truro NS

Mingo Family of Color in Craftsbury, Orleans Co., Vermont

A history of the town of Craftsbury, Orleans Co., VT, written in the 1880s, lists "Aunt Ruth Mingo (colored)" among those who "came into the Town, to Settle, from 1810 to 1830." The history also names her "Widow Ruth Mingo (Colored)" and her daughters Mahala, Patience, Henrietta, & Fanny. Paul Mingo was enumerated in the 1810 U.S. census in Greensboro, Orleans Co., VT. I would be interested in hearing from anyone who has information about these people.

There is a Robert Mingo, age 24, born in Pa. who is listed as a Soldier in the 1870 census for Socorro Co. N.M.
I am not related to this family. I was looking through this census for someone else and saw all the soldiers names listed here, so this must have been a fort. I just wanted to share this information with the list.
The link for the site is listed below.

Joyce

http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/nm/socorro/census/1870/...

Hello I'm Looking for MINGO Afro-American relatives (who may be distant relatives) who still live in North Carolina and South Carolina. My paternal grandfather Marion Mingo Sr.(now deceased) was born around 1900 in either North Carolina or South Carolina. He had a brother named Tony Mingo and a Sister or Aunt named Lillie Mingo. He also had an uncle Jimmie Mingo. I don't know much about the Mingo side of my family - My father N. Mingo has passed away and there are no older Mingo members of my family that are alive.

My Mingo relatives were related to the Olivers and the McCrae

Some of my Mingo relatives migrated to New Jersey which is where we live now. They migrated to New Jersey sometime around the 1910s or the 1920s from the Carolinas.

Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
From Natalie Mingo Holton.
my great grandmother was Susan Matilda Mingo, probably born in Allington, Devon, England, in 1858. Married Roger Foxworthy in 1885. Two children - a son Harry Mingo Foxworthy born in 1887 was my Grandfather. Susan Mingo appears in 1861 census at East Allington , with two sisters, one brother and mother, Sarah, aged 40 (born Stoke Damerel, near Plymouth) I would like to trace Susan Matilda Mingo's parents and grandparents. Any info you have found would be appreciated. The name Mingo would appear to be derived from Latin "Dominus"
