My Grandfather was Rainey or Rena Minton, he was the son of Grant Minton and Sarah A. Jones. According to my mother Nancy Minton who is the daughter of Rainey Minton and Susie Caudill, Grant had sveral siblings, he had a sister Esther, Bessie, Alie (she married and her name became Moore), Katherine or Catherine, and Jessie or Jesse. That is all I have been able to find out so far. I have just begun our family tree and have quite a ways to go.

An update on E. F. Mink: definitely the son of Constantine and Anna Maria Ambraster (Ambruster?), born in Detroit in 1854. For some reason the Minks moved to Chatham, Ontario for a couple of years -- they show up in the 1861 ontario census. It's still possible that they went back to Germany for a little while, but they're definitely back in Detroit in 1864.

Following what seems to be a traditional mode with every 5 yrs, thank you for
the info I didn't know was there - but my brother Gray Sharp posted that question i 2000 and is in heaven now. I've since found out a bit of what you told us. Sounds like you're family.

After losing 6 family memers a couple of years ago all at once, or so it seemed, I cooled my jets at in geneology. Just too hard for a while as they were all to close. Now, it might be nice to know more and looks as though you might. If you're still there I cam be contacted by email - sheryln@sheryln.com or HisSong@sheryln.com

I am looking for the daughter of Roy Minke and Leona Adkins. She may live in Clark County, Ohio.

I would like to know where Roy Minke's father, Morgan Rufus Mink, died. Was it Union County, TN?

A later wife of Morgan Rufus was Dorothy Brown Mink. The Mink family thinks she died protecting her brother from a bullet. Did she die in Sullivan County, TN.

Please contact me if you are a member of this Mink family. I have more information on Morgan Rufus Mink if anyone is interesting in working on their ancestors. Thank you. Linda Marrison

Ernest Mink was my great grandfather & he was also a stonecutter in Detroit. He died in 1915 a year after my grandmother was born, crush by a slab of stone. I don't know if this is the same person but I believe he & his family is buried at Mt. Olivet in Detroit. I believe my second cousin, Ernst Mink the 3rd or 4th has a complete family tree of Minks.

I have not heard the Cherokee Myth. My Mink ancestors trace straight to Lehigh County Pennsyvania several hundred years. I have run into the name Minks and the name Minx associated with black and Indian families. The story passed down in my family is that Mink came from Germany and one named Henry Minck didn't get land he inherited. He said that if he could not have his German land, he would not have his German name and dropped the "c" to just Mink. Far back in records the name is spelled both Minck and Mink interchangeably for the same people. Anyone else with same story in family ?

A DNA surname project needs someone to be the administrator. If no one is willing to do that right now, a MINK/MINKS/MINX DNA project can easily be set up by contacting the owners of:
http://worldfamilies.net/joinaproject.html

My interest would be in finding a presently living male Mink descendant from my line to be DNA tested.
James MINK b. 1818 KY d. ca. 1885 parents b. VA
md. 1st Mary (- -?- -) b. 1820 NC d. by 1862 Smith Co., TN
md. 2nd. ca. 1862 Ardelia CARDWELL b. Jan. 15, 1842 TN

James apparently went from KY to NC where he and Mary apparently married ca. 1845 and had 2 children b. 1846 & 1848 in NC. By 1849 they were in Gilmer Co., GA where the next 2 children were b. 1849 & 1852. By 1856 the family is in TN when another child was born, then found on the 1860 census of Smith Co., TN.

Joy

Yes--I wasn't implying that MINK was always an alias--only that a couple early Swedes (in New Sweden along the Delaware) adopted the name MINK as an alias when it became necessary for the Swedes to adopt a permanent surname in the English fashion rather than to use Patronymics names.

Joan

If you can provide us with additional details perhaps we can check the census records and see what indicate as to ethnicity. We would need names, dates, and places for family members 1930 and earlier.

Joan

I only find ONE Bee Mink on the US census listings--so I'm going to assume (which may not be a good thing to do) that he is your Bee Mink. If I have found the right person he was born about 1912 in TN and he was living with his parents Hugh (born TN) and Lillian R. (born TX) in Oklahoma. He and the entire family are listed as White.

Hugh appears to be the son of James E. MINK and wife Susan living in Daviess County, Indiana in 1880 and again, all are listed as being White. Beginning with the 1880 census there was a specified designation for Indian and while prior to 1880 those with some Indian blood would have been possibly listed otherwise--1880 on up they should have been listed as Indian if indeed they were.

Many of these Indian and Cherokee family stories are simply that--stories that either can't be proven with the facts or that are mythical to begin with.

Complexion and appearance can't be used to determine ethnicity. While there are certainly those with the surname MINK who are Native American -- there are also many Jewish, German, and even early Swedes who adopted the alias Mink for their surname.

Joan

I've seen photos where the family INSISTS it is obvious the person is Native American but the photos don't prove that at all--old sepia tone photos -- especially if the person doesn't have dentures making cheek bones more prominent can all contribute to someone looking possibly Indian when they are not.

However, that said, if you have photographic evidence you would like to share with us--photos can be scanned and attached to a post on this board.

Joan

Hey, not sure about alot of my past, but I have visual evidence (photos) and credible sources that my great-great-grandmother, was full-blooded Cherokee, the photos are obvious. This doesn't go back all that far since I am 33 and my great-great grandma was alive when I was a baby. I have also heard the myth of the indian connection, but since I have always heard the stories and seen the photos, I never questioned it, BUT the kicker is, this was my grandmothers grandma, so it explains my blood line, but not the other Minks.
