Minter Records need adopting

I was “gifted” with a box of genealogy having to do with one of my family lines after a researcher passed away. In the box is also a lot of other family lines that aren’t mine. I’ve sorted them into folders as best I can and here are the surnames and a little about them if I can tell much.

Buttrey – Wilkes Co NC (small file – letters)
Bailey – Topeka Kansas, New Castle, Pa, Youngstown, Ohio (small file, letters)
Loveless – Columbus Ohio, Washington Co., Va (small file, letters)
Wilderich – Henry Wiederick or Wilderick, b Germany 1858, pedigree chart (small file)
Hildebrand – Morgan County, Missouri, John Hildebrand b 1822 in Baden Germany m Victoria Anhauser or Enghauser – (thick file, quite a bit of research)
Trabuc/Trabue – Edward Trabue b 1764, son of John, married Martha Haskins, Jessamine Co., Ky and Va.
King – Joseph King m 1819 to Frances, Lincolnshire England
Nichols – Abner JeffersonNichols b 1837 probably Alabama, poss Missouri or Ark. (2 pages)

The ones below seem to be grouped together as I've grouped them. I would presume that these files in the groups would go to a researcher as a unit.

Group 1:
Smith – Thomas Leslie Smith, Missouri, born Pittsylvania Co, Va to John Wesley Smith and Sally Saunders Claytor Leftwich
Leftwich – Bedford Co., Va.
Gregory – includes Minter, Adair Co., Ky, other Ky counties, Powhatan Co, Va., John Gregory Rev War Vet, (quite a bit of research)
Minter – Fayette County, Ky, Powhatan Co, Va. (also in the Gregory file)

Group 2:
Bolander – Stephen Bolander b 1756 Lancaster Co Pa m Magaretha Shinkle (small file, letters)
Shinkle – Colorado, South Dakota, Ohio, Indiana, Iowa and Illinois
Bush – Catherine Bush m Philip Jacob Shinkle in Brush Valley, Center Co., Pa. (one letter only)
McConnell – Arthur in Washington Pa, then to Ky, Ohio and Indiana and then his children and grandchildren to Illinois and Iowa, John McConnell served in War of 1812 from Ohio Militia, Brown Co. Ohio
Luing – intermixed in other files
Watson – two lines, one from Oxford who never left England and one from York and Lincoln who came to the western US in the 1920s (small file, letters)
Wyatt – intermixed in other files
Logan – in the same file as Gregg, Pennsylvania, Jefferson Co., Indiana
Gregg – in the same file a Logan, Pennsylvania, Jefferson Co., Indiana

Group 3 – the familes below are all intermingled in one file – Kittaning, Armstrong Co., Pa, Mercer Co., Pa, various Pa, Va and NC counties, also Missouri,
Hellam – George Curtis Hellam m Mary Ellen Hawk
Peat – Oran Peat b 1899 m Gutherie Faye in Pa
Hawk – Daniel Hawk m Magdalena Bricker
Welton – intermarried with the above families

Group 4
Godley – Quaker, Farquier Co, Va, Georgia, Anderson Co., Tx (much research) – also see Peacock
Peacock – from Nottingham England, never came to America, Elizabeth m George Godley and their dau Sarah came to the us in 1924.

These are yours for the price of postage. First to e-mail me, first to get the file. Let me know which files you want.

Roberta Estes
Joseph Minter, died 1774, and wife Mary of Fauquier Co., Virginia

Looking for records of Joseph Minter prior to his arrival in Prince William/Fauquier Co., Virginia. Would like to find who his parents were.

He was born abt 1700-1710 and died 25 Jun 1774. (Fauquier Co., VA Will Bk.1, pp.253-254).

Joseph Minter came to Prince William/Fauquier Co., from Spotsylvania Co., VA in 1734.
--On 16 July 1734 Joseph Minter of Spotsylvania Co. purchased 213 acres on south run of Broad Run, part of a greater tract of 774 acres, from William Duff. (Prince William Co., VA Deed Bk.B, pp.288-291). George Neavill and Zachary Taylor were witnesses to the deed.
--Note: William Duff had received a grant for this 774 acres on south run of Broad Run of Occoquan, and at the foot of the Broken Hills on 12 May 1725. (Northern Neck Grants Bk.A, p.149).

So far, the earliest record found of Joseph is from 17 Mar 1733 when he was a witness to the will of George Twyman of Spotsylvania Co., VA. Zachary Taylor, the grandfather of President Zachary Taylor, was the other witness. (Spotsylvania Co., VA Will Bk.A, p.210).

From Joseph's will we know his wife was named Mary. There appears to be a lot of confusion concerning the maiden name of Mary. Databases on RootsWeb and other genealogical websites show the wife of Joseph Minter variously as Mary Bohannan/Bohanon etc., Mary Buchanan and Mary Trabue. Some list Mary Trabue as his mother and the wife of Joseph Minter Sr. No credible sources for this information is cited in any of these databases. However, there were Bohannans and Buchanans living in Spotsylvania Co., VA during the time Joseph Minter was living there.

Joseph and Mary Minter's daughter Elizabeth "Betty" Minter was born abt 1730. She married George Rogers abt 1750, probably in Prince William Co. I am a descendant of George Rogers and Elizabeth Minter through their son Edward who married Elizabeth Hathaway.

When my Gminder's came to Pennsylvania from Reutlingen in Wuerttemberg (Germany) they changed the spelling to Minter and settled in Adams and York Counties in Pennsylvania then spead to Somerset, Hunterdon, Erie, Franklin, and Cambria Counties as well as Carroll Co, Maryland. Some went on to Deleware Co in Ohio, Indiana, Van Buren County, in Iowa, Marshall, Salene, McPherson and Dickinson Counties in Kansas, and all over Oklahoma. I am especially interested in the Minter's who stayed in Pennsylvania and do work on the others including associated families as well. Happy to share and cooperate.

Perhaps you have already found the info you searched for, but I was doing a little research on my ancentry and saw your request. In our info, John Hill Minter's parents were Abner Hill Minter, born 1 Jun, 1785in Chatham Co.,NC, and died 1 Jun, 1855 in Upson Co.,GA. He married
Charity Chapman 6 Jul, 1809 in Chatham Co.,, NC. There were
seven children born to this union, John Hill being the first.

Our ancestors are from Abner Hill's second marriage to
Sarah Welch on 27 Oct. 1831 in Upson Co., GA. There were
eight children born to this union. Our direct ancestor is
the sixth born, William Carey, who is my great-grandfather.
who was born in Upson Co., Ga. I know my ancestors traveled thru Alabama, then Arkansas, before coming to Houston County, Texas.

We have searched oour ancestors back to 1608 in England.
Richard Minter and Ann ? were both born and wed in England
and had a child, Edward who was also born in England. Records show that Ann died in 1608 in Virginia, and Richard
also died in Virginia in 1612. I wonder who raised Edward???

I do a little. Their father was John Munroe Bailey and mother was Frances Carriker. Unfortunately, that is it for Bailey side. I have a fair bit on Carriker, but all of it came from the web. Write me at KAMeyer2@houston.rr.com. I'll share with you as much as we can after the first. I'm in Houston for a couple of weeks. Most of my notes are in London.
Merry Christmas to you and yours and a Happy New Year.
MINTER family TX (Panola, Shelby, Cherokee counties) s/o John A Minter GA

Can anyone tell me more about this family or recognize them? They seem to disappear in 1910, 1920, 1930 census!! I'm frustrated.

Minnie O. HOUSTON b. Aug 1873 GA (Minna in census) m. 30 April 1893 in Panola Co. TX, James Gordon MINTER b. Feb 1874 GA d. Shelby Co. TX. James Gordon Minter was the older brother of Arvie Cheaverson Minter who married Minnie’s sister Mossie Mae Houston, also in Panola Co. TX. Both were sons of John A. Minter and his wife Nancy M. Minter. Another daughter of theirs, named also Nancy M. Minter after her mother, married Samuel Newton Houston, a brother to both Minnie and Mossie Houston. Minnie (Houston) Minter and her husband were farming in 8J-Pct Panola Co. TX in 1900. I could not find them in 1920 or 1930 census, but their child Gussie L. Minter is in 7J-Pct, Shelby Co. TX in 1930, married with a family. Minnie and James G. Minter had:
Merva MINTER b. May 1894 TX (son)
Gussie L. MINTER b. Mar 1896 TX (son) m.ca. 1922 when she was 14, Lilla E.___b.ca. 1908 TX. She stated both her parents were also born in TX. They were farming in 7J-Pct Shelby Co. TX in April 1930 and at that time had two children:
Gussie L. MINTER JR b.ca. 1925 TX (son)
Jean MINTER b.ca. 1927 TX (son)
Katy O. MINTER b.ca. 1904 TX
Minnie O. MINTER b.ca. 1909 TX

Minter Family - GA to TX need help!

Found a 2nd 'Minter' marriage in my family group and am hoping there's someone out there from this line who could help and exchange information:

The known children of Martilla (Warren) Houston and Cicero‘Irvin’ Houston:
Samuel N. HOUSTON b. Feb 1871 GA m.22 May1893 Panola Co. TX, Nancy Mamie MINTER b. May 1877 GA. Her parents believed to be John A. Minter b. 1846 GA and his wife Nancy M. Minter b. June 1840 GA who were farming in Panola Co. TX in 1900. (On that census, her brother Arvie who married Mossie Mae Houston, is enumerated as Harvey).Sam and Nancy M. Houston in 1900 census arefarming in Panola Co. TX with 3 children, 3 living. In 1910 census Sam is farming still in Panola Co. TX but state they had had 7 children, 6 living. In 1910 his widowed mother Martilla (Warren) Houston age 56, and 3 of her daughters ages 18, 15 and 14 are living in his household. By 1920 and age 49 Sam N. Houston and family have moved to Williams Street, Dallas, Dallas Co. TX and all of the children have left home except for Talmadge, Elsie, Ruth and Leon. He is the proprieter of a grocery store. At age 59, Sam and his wife are farming on Kaufman Road, Dallas Co. TX. with only youngest son Leon at home. Granddaughter Bertie J. Good was enumerated with them on the 1930 census. They are living next door to Bessie (Houston) and her husband Aaron Griffith.

Re: Virginia Minters

Descendants of John and Susannah (Williams) Minter
4A Elizabeth "Betsy" (Minter) Dupuy
The first child of John and Susannah Minter, according to virtually all known listings, was Elizabeth "Betsy" Minter, of whom it has been said that she was born "about 1772." No original source is known, however, and the implication in the will of Susannah's father, John Williams, that his daughter had not yet married by 1772 (Note 3C above), suggests that Susannah's first child might have arrived a bit later, probably between 1773 and 1775.
Betsy Minter married Luther Obediah Dupuy, who was born about 1775, almost surely a member of some branch of the extensive Dupuy family descended from Huguenot immigrant Bartholomew Dupuy, outlined in Brock's survey of the Huguenot settlement at Manakin-Town. This was the second marriage of a Minter woman to a Dupuy. As per Note 3B, Betsy's aunt of the same name, John Minter's sister, Elizabeth "Betsy" Minter [3], married the Reverend John Dupuy and moved to Kentucky. It must be noted, however, that Brock's genealogy of the Dupuys lists children of John and Elizabeth (Minter) Dupuy and the name Luther Obediah is not among them.

Luther and Betsy Dupuy had a son in 1795, to whom they gave the name William Obediah Dupuy. Luther died that same year, of unknown cause, said to have been "in the service of his country." Soon thereafter, the child went to live on the farm with his grandparents, John and Susannah Minter, and his surname was changed to Minter. An interesting explanation was provided by a Dorothy Ann Minter of Charleston, West Virginia, in a letter written in 1956 to "A. T.," published in the Minter Genealogical Bulletin:

... a Minter gal married a Dupays [sic] man and when he died young, she was forced to return to her father's farm. Her father, Mr. Minter required her to give the Minter name to the son to enable him to inherit the property, now these names can be in reverse.
His name has been listed in a wide variety of ways, with agreement only on the name Obediah. He has been called William Obediah Minter, by Jane Duffy; William Obediah (Watson Minter) Dupuy, by Ken Storm; and Obediah Dupuy Watson/Minter, by Walter M. Minter. The 1850 census listed him simply as Obediah Minter (age 55). We will call him Obediah (Dupuy) Minter, which retains his original surname parenthetically and the one given name that appears to be most firmly established.
Jane Duffy, a descendant of Obediah, is the person to contact regarding this line, and, as in the case of many other such contacts, other facets of the larger Minter tree as well. According to her and others, Obediah married Frances "Fannie" Walker Covington and they had seven children (known). From them has followed a substantial descendancy, of which Storm provides a good overview.

Ironically, the Minter surname traces to Obediah's mother's side of the family and not the male side; he was, in terms of male bloodlines, a Dupuy, not a Minter. Thus, if his surname had not been legally changed by his grandparents, the name Dupuy would replace Minter throughout his descendancy.

One of the children of Odediah and Fannie was Daniel Leftwich Minter [6], born in 1834 (age 16 in the 1850 census), who died in 1862 of wounds sustained at the battle of Cedar Run, according to a note found in the family Bible of his granddaughter (who was also Jane Duffy's grandmother) [Duffy, email of Oct-15-2006]. Some listings show Daniel's middle name as Leftridge, rather than Leftwich. Daniel married Hester Ann Jefferson, and in 1857 they had a son, John James Minter [7], who would marry Maralda Jane Davis in the mid-1870s. A daughter of this couple, Nannie Jane Minter [8], married Hamilton Roundtree Adkins around the turn of the century and they had four children, of whom one was John Nathaniel Adkins, Jane Duffy's father. A photograph of the family, taken about 1910, according to Jane, who made it available to us, shows her father John Nathaniel and his sister, Faturia Mae, as children, their brother Cecil not having been born yet.

A brother of Nannie Jane Minter was James Leftridge (or Leftwich?) Minter, known as "Leffie." In a letter written in 1939, addressed to a "Miss Odom," recounted in the Minter Genealogical Bulletin, Leffie Minter's wife described the line as she knew it:

My husband is: James Leffie Minter; His father is: John Jim Minter and will be 82 this July (born 1857). My husband's grandfather was Obediah Leftrich Minter, called Leff who was killed in the Confederate War. His father and namesake was: Obediah Leftrich Minter, he being the great grandfather of my husband. [Bulletin p.160]
The Obediah Leftrich Minter identified as her husband's grandfather is usually cited as Daniel Leftwich [6] (or Leftridge) Minter, and he was listed as Daniel L. in the 1850 census. The writer's use of the name Leftrich adds a third variation to the mix, but we know of no other such spelling. She also identified her husband's great-grandfather as Obediah Leftrich Minter [5], as noted earlier, and this, too, appears to be a one-of-a-kind reference.
Another child of Obediah (Dupuy) and Fannie (Covington) Minter was James Fontaine Minter [6], born in 1829, who married America Delaware Jefferson, of Pittsylvania County, born in 1834. Their son Isaiah Thompson Minter [7], born in 1854, married, first, Alice Wingfield, and after her death, Josephine Umberger, about the mid-1890s. Isaiah was listed in the census of 1920 as age 65, a grocer with his own business in Roanoke. He and Josephine had three children, the youngest of whom was a daughter born in 1901/02, named Josephine Katherine Minter [8]. In 1925, Josephine married James Lindsay Almond, Jr., who served as Attorney General of Virginia, 1948-57, as Governor of Virginia, 1958-62, and later as Judge of the U.S. Court of Customs and Patent Appeals, appointed by President John F. Kennedy in 1962, until his death in 1986.

I am trying to locate the John H. Minter family in Arkansas in 1870 and 1880. I have them in Saline County in 1860 and they drop off the map. The part of the county they were in was moved to grant County in 1869 but they still do not show up. I am the grandson of James Monroe Minter. Other children are George Washington Minter and Isaac Minter. The three boys settled in north Louisiana in jackson parish near Quitman. George later went to houston where he lived out his life. I have info to share and would like to hear from Minter ancestors. I am also interested in a DNA program such as Family tree DNA which we have used very sucessfully used in the Crow FAMILY>

Did you know that before Susan was married to John she was married to James Pettigrew? I suspect they were apparently neighbors of John's family. In 1828 (a year after they were married) John acted as admiistration of James Pettigrew's estate. I think she had a child by Pettigrew. Nancy

Afternoon. My grandfather, Thomas Sherman Minter, had a sister named Carrie. A couple of years ago I read where there was a Charles Minter that was being buried in Iola, Texas. There is also a Minter Springs Road in the southern part of Brazos County.

The person that you need to correspond with is my cousin, Jimmy Minter. Jimmy Lives in Pasadena, Texas. I do know that the Minters came to Texas from South Carolina. Jimmy's e-mail address is jcminter@swbell.net.

Keep in touch. I feel that somewhere down the line we (Minters) are connected.

Ginger

Nancy, I did know about the previous marriage to James Pettigrew but did not know if she had a child/children by him or not. I did know that John Minter was an administrator of Pettigrew's estate. Sure wish we could piece all of this together. I live near Milledgeville but as you may know, lots of important records were burned in courthouse fires during the destruction that accompanied Gen. Sherman on his trip through Georgia. If only those men had know what they were burning! Anyway, if I find anything I'll be back in touch. I would love to know what happened to Harris Minter after he served in the War with his brothers. I lose him after that.
