My fathers name is or was Robert Minto of Eau
Claire. He left when we were young kids so I don't remember him. He left behind four children two boys and two girls.
I came across this post when my daughter was doing research on our family tree.

Francis Dinnis and they had 6 children etc.
There is a lot more I could give you but under separate cover, I think, if you are interested
I have just recently stumbled on your correspondence re the Minto's of Durham.
I am descended from John Thompson Minto, son of George and Ann. He married Elizabeth Tewsey in Falmouth in 1828 and Ann his eldest daughter married Francis Dinnis in 1843 in Falmouth.
Our first record of John shows that he was an experienced mariner and was employed as a temporary Captain for a charter voyage for the Falmouth Packet Service. On the voyage he distinguished himself in beating off an American Privateer, of superior strength. He was rewarded for this action with a silver cup from the owners. I have that cup.

James Dinnis
Stevenage, Herts. U.K.

I have a only a couple old photos of my great grandparents
so I may recognize a decent quality photo. However, I am
not aware that they actually owned a cottage. But what the
heck, if you would like me to look at it, I would be happy
to do so. My father is from Canada, (Hamilton) originally
which is why we always spent time in the summer at Muskoka,
but alot of Buffalonians have property or rent for the summer months. It's such a beautiful area. My e-mail address is as follows: jozo130@yahoo.com Thanks!

Thanks for replying. If you are interested, I could scan this photo and send it to you. It was taken from the dock of the boathouse of my great-grandfather, Henry B. Clark and shows the Minto cottage on an island in the background. Would you recognize your great-grandparents? Do you know if they or any other of your relations had a summer home on Lake Joseph, Muskoka during the 20's and 30's? Please let me know if the photo is of interest. I guess I'll need your e-mail address.

My great grandparents were william and jane weir minto. I do not know if the photo you have is of them. They resided in Buffalo, NY. Our family has continued to vacation in Canada (Muskoka, Tobermory,ex.) It might be coincidental, as Minto is a fairly common name.

My search for the family of James Minto, born Glasgow 1819 has led me in a surprising direction. I looked for them in USA, because they were said to be living in Cincinnati in the 1860's. No sign of them anywhere in the States, but I found a family born in Scotland with exactly the same first names and ages living in Cincinnati using the surname of Henderson, the wife's maiden name. James age 39, Jessie age 40, James age 18, William age 15, Agnes age 10, Peter age 6. Also, Ohio-born Jessie age 4. They were using the surname Henderson at the time of the 1860 census, and possibly had adopted it as soon as they came to the States. The sons William and Peter had been christened with Henderson as their middle name.

The son William, born 1846 in Glasgow, has a younger sister Jessie. He is found on the 1880 census married to Lucy,(LaBOITEAUX?) with sons James, Willy and Minto, and a daughter Lillie.

I cannot trace the oldest boy of this family, James Henderson,(born in Glasgow in 1841) after 1860. I don't know what happened to Agnes (b 1843) after 1870. She probably married. I would be glad to get more information about this family.

I notice the name DUNLOP is associated with William Henderson by someone. If the same family is being talked about, Dunlop was the mother's maiden name of Jessie Sinclair Henderson who married James Minto. Confusing!

Is this an alias or bigamy? SUGGESTIONS PLEASE!

Robert George BENNETT c1820 Perth, is found in 1871 St George Southwark & 1881 Hanwell as a Retired Infantry Colonel on half pay.

No civil BMD has yet been found and he is not in the Army Lists. Family myth has financial collapse and/or suicide as reason for lack of accurate information.

Seven children took his Bennett name and most had a Catholic Baptism [Two Godfathers were an Edgar BENNETT and George ELLIOT].

By 1891 [possibly by 1886] the 'father' was absent. The Mother Mary/Margaret nee HENRY c1838 Sligo, is listed as Widow and the family now used the Surname

ANSTRUTHER.

The name ANSTRUTHER is found as middle name on several bapstism records.
Only three civil birth registations have so far been found [all as Bennett].
George Elliot Carnegie BENNETT 1870 Saint Saviour
Mary Georgina Anstruther BENNETT 1879 Brentford
Dominick Compton Anstruther BENNETT 1881 Brentford.

Other siblings [birthdates from baptism or Army records]
Edgar 05/10/1866 Liverpool
Frederick Anstruther 16/05/1872 baptised Southwark Cathedral
Gilbert Anstruther 08/11/1874-09/05/1892 bap. His two sons were in mining. One a blacksmith and the other eventually sold mining equipment. Most are buried in Byesville, OH and Caldwell, OH.

Hello Bob-my tree is on the Genes Reunited site.I am slowly gaining insight into the Mintos of Co.Durham,Northumberland and Roxburghshire. They were prolific producers of male children and a couple of them seem to have populated Durham!I think I have most of the immediate families of each generation, including most of their wives.Iam more than willing to share information.I'm very interested in putting them into a social context and any info.that you have would be gratefully received. There are two Clement Mintos mentioned on the Durham mining site as fatalities. The earlier one was my great grandfather's half brother. The site is fascinating.
Kind regards Margaret

It's very interesting-Elizabeth Minto, born 1793 and daughter of George Minto and Ann Thompson also married a Burdon-William Burdon in 1817 in Medomsley.I think I told you that I'm descended from Clement Minto, son of George and Ann.I've traced the line back to William Minto, born 1666 in Oxnam in Roxburghshire. We always knew it was a border Scots name,so it was hugely exciting to find the link.I just wish my parents were still alive to share it with.I presume William went to a mining area in America, after leaving the U.K.If so,how long did that tradition last?My father was a miner briefly as a young man but left the north east in about 1930 to pursue other occupations.Thank you so much for replying-it just gets more and more interesting!
Regards Margaret

Many cottagers were from Ohio, Pennsylvania, Michigan and New York. Does anyone know who these Mintos might be?
