Mary Ann Mitcham (Barnes) of GA

My gg-grandmother was Mary Ann Mitcham. I am hoping to find some info on her background. The only info I have on her is that she was born 6/17/1827 and died 6/26/1898 (per tombstone). She married William Barnes on Nov 5, 1854, in Troup Co, GA (found marriage certificate in GA Archives). Census records indicate she was born in Georgia. There are many posts regarding Elijah Mitcham and his ancestors but it doesn't appear she was his descendent. Did Elijah have brothers that could have been her father? Mary Ann and her husband eventually lived in Charlotte, NC where they died and are buried in Elmwood Cemetery.

Elijah Mitcham, Meriwether County, Georgia

For everyone who is researching the family of Elijah Mitcham and his wife Rebecca of Meriwether County, Georgia: here is a documented list of their children per his estate papers - Meriwether County Georgia Inventories,Appraisments,Returns, Book E 1858- 1863, pg 8-10 and pg 112- 113. This can be found at the Georgia Department of Archives and History in Drawer 13 Box 13.

If there is not a spouse listed then I have not found documents listing the spouse. The spouses of the daughters with the exception of Nancy were listed by name in the estate papers. Nancy is listed as also deceased with her heirs inheriting her portion of the estate. Mary Ann Mitcham was not listed in the papers as she had died in 1843 with apparently no children. She was listed with her spouses name and as the daughter of Elijah Mitcham in her death announcement in The Southern Recorder, a Georgia Newspaper of the time.

1. Nancy Mitcham married to Eli Arrington
2. William Mitcham ( see note below re: William Mitcham)
3. Willis A.Mitcham married to Eliza Jane Branham
4. George Washington Mitcham
5. Thomas N. Mitcham married to Nancy Loretta Leslie
6. Mary Ann Mitcham married to Jesse H. Williams
7. Elijah Mitcham, Jr. married to Sarah A. Leslie
8. Elizabeth Mitcham married to Tillman H. Howard
9. Martha Mitcham married to James T. Florence
10. Matilda Salina Mitcham married to Thomas Florence
11.Joel C. Mitcham

After going back over Elijah's estate papers, I realize that I need to make a correction to William Mitcham. I originally stated that he was married to Mary A. Williams. He was not married to Mary A. Williams. Mary was actually his sister Mary Ann Mitcham who married Jesse H. Williams and Sarah Elizabeth Williams married to William LaFayette Bryant was their daughter.

William Mitcham and his sister Mary Williams were listed at the end of the list of children and heirs. Mary had died before Elijah, thus her portion of the estate went to her daughter. I have not been able to find much info on William. Some researchers believe that he is the William Mitcham who married Clementine Hammet in Troup County, Georgia. However, there was another William Mitcham of the same era who married Elizabeth Coker in Meriwether County. I believe that this William Mitcham is the son of Elijah and Rebecca, but have found no records that can prove this.

It took some tracking, I have to admit. Alice (my grandmother) was born in 1882 so she missed the 1880 census then she had married (McCrorey, I have known her children by McCrorey for quite a while) just before the 1900 census. But a wonderful lady with GENWEB in Angelina Co., TX helped me find the family.

If you look at her picture at Cricket's Tree on Ancestry for Alice Vivian Mitcham Hayes, you can see how much she favors her mother Martha (picture at Find a Grave).

Indeed it will! Thank you. Apparently, I am missing one or more children of Joseph and Martha. I also know Mo Gates and corresponded with her from years back. I guess we never got into the family of Joseph enough! :) Again, thank you...I have added Vivian to Joseph's family.

I can clear up some of the questions earlier in this thread about George Washington Mitcham (1798-1883?), son of Richard B. Meacham. George was my gg-grandfather. I descend from his daughter Elizabeth, who m. Thomas Dickson White, 1848, Clarke Co., AL. One of my George's sons was Joseph Lee Mitcham, who went to Texas. He married Martha Ann Walker, 1865, in Clarke Co., AL. They had nine children, but none was named Alice Vivian. Re; the posts by gabbyhayes1946, your Joseph L. Mitcham must have been the son of another George W. (not the GW who was son of Richard B. Meacham). My Joseph is the one buried in Bosque Co., TX

I may have portraits of Elijah Mitcham and wife. Their son George W. Mitcham married a McClendon in merriwether County in the early 1840's and before 1850 moved to Chambers County Alabama. George Mitcham was a Justice of The Peace Public Notary and drew up many wills and deeds and performed marriages. I have an old Cased Ambrotype pictures of an older couple made before the civil war. They belonged to George W Mitchams granddaughter who died in the 1960's. She said she did not know who they were. Her mother was a daughter to George Mitcham and the older gentleman in picture is holding a violin. The lady is somewhat of a darker complexion maybe of Indian descent?

Re: "Have you ever considered the possibility that maybe the person involved in the Polly Barclay case may have been a Marcus Elijah Mitcham who later appears in Jones Co in 1820 as Marelij Mitcham & in Meriweather in 1830 as Elijah?

I think that is kind of a stretch, don't you Herb?

I do believe that the person on the 1820 Jones County census is really a Marcus Mitcham and not Marciej as transcripts say, because when you look at the actual microfilm record, you can tell that the name is Marcus. However, is it the same one implicated in the Barclay case, who knows? And, I don't believe that person is Elijah. The ages and sexes of the children listed do not match up in any way with Elijah's and Rebecca's children and they were together by 1920 based on the known birth dates of their children.

I would like to clarify that I have not ruled out that Rebecca's last name was Norman, nor have I ruled out that she might have been Native American. As I said before, I am trying to locate verifiable records to prove or disprove her ancestry. Just because Thomas's middle name has been said to be Norman does not mean that Rebecca's maiden name was Norman. There has to be other evidence to back it up.

You stated:
"according to my notes at the Nitcham Cemetery his headstone reads "Thomas Norman Mitcham, Esq." "

I don't know if the headstone said that or not as I have not seen it personally. The only information that I have on his burial is from page 71 in the book
"Meriwether County Cemeteries" found at Georgia Dept of Archives. Thomas's name is given as Thomas N. Mitcham. There is a disclaimer by the person that surveyed the cemetery that says: " name broken off headstone, but I found obituary in Meriwether Vindicator, July 20, 1894." Per the book, his birth and death dates along with his age were carved on the remaining part of the headstone. Per the survey, his wife and son are also buried there. Until I can try to locate the graves myself, I consider this "secondary" evidence since it is from a transcribed book and not actual records.

I am curious... have you personally been to the Mitcham family cemetery and seen the headstone or is it information that another researcher gave to you? If it is from someone else, had they been to the grave sites?

As I stated before, I will continue to leave Rebecca as "maiden name unknown" until I can find something substantial that does indicate the name because so far I have not seen any evidence that proves it one way or the other.

Herb,

I posted the photo on findagrave of the Elijah Mitcham, Jr. headstone at Countyline Cemetery. I walked the cemetery and Elijah, Sr. and Rebecca are not buried there unless it is without headstone.

You are correct, sometimes records can not be located. Courthouses burned and records were lost. Sometimes you have to rely on circumstantial evidence. But if you are relying on circumstantial evidence, then you have to have more of that evidence than if you are relying on records. And when you are using circumstantial evidence, it is best to point that out using such terms as "it is believed that" or "there is a possibility that..... based on" whatever the circumstantial evidence is. You stated: "Nonetheless, I didn't base my decision on 1 letter - but on about 10 different things. I cant remember them all but she named 1 son Thomas Norman Mitcham". Even if you have thrown out 80% of your Mitcham research, your source footnotes in your book should tell you what you based the assumptions on.

Can you tell me how you know that Thomas N. Mitcham was Thomas Norman Mitcham? I have never seen him listed by anything but Thomas N. Mitcham in the records that I have found so far, but I know that I have not uncovered all records pertaining to him, so maybe it is recorded somewhere. However, his obituary states Thomas N. Mitcham. (I have only seen a transcription of the obituary; possibly the transcriber put Thomas N. instead of Thomas Norman). Elijah, Sr.'s estate papers list him as Thomas N. Mitcham. Other newspaper transcriptions refer to him as Thomas N. Mitcham. I have not searched for Thomas's will or estate papers yet, so possibly he is listed Thomas Norman Mitcham in them. Or is there a bible record?

I realize that the 1820 census is online. You can look at the pages before and after. I have also searched the actual microfilm copies at both a National Archives Branch and at the Georgia Dept of Archives. Have you found Elijah on the 1820 records? Can you tell me where so I can find him? The writing is very hard to decipher at times and goodness knows, I could have very well missed him.

My paternal grandmother always stated that we have Native American heritage. But I don't know if she was referring to her side of the family or my grandfather's side which includes the Mitchams. I have been trying to find the source for her statement as long as I have been doing genealogy. But if Rebecca was trying to hide her heritage by using the last name of Norman, I don't believe it would have been due to the Indian Removal Act as that took place in 1830 and Thomas was born in 1819, so if she named him for her family name she would have been using the maiden name of Norman long before the Indian Removal act caused people of Indian blood to begin to hide that fact.(Thomas's birth date is based on a transcription of the headstones in the Mitcham family cemetery found in " Meriwether County Cemeteries". I have not seen the headstone in person, so the date may be incorrect.)

Gwen--yes, I did not base my belief that Rebecca was a "Norman" on any "official" record.

But sometimes we just aren't going to have one.

Nonetheless, I didnt base my decision on 1 letter - but on about 10 different things. I cant remember them all but she named 1 son Thomas Norman Mitcham (the Mitchans were fairly good about sticking w/ the same names & I think this is the only time Norman surfaced...eventually the small things can add up)

The 1820 Census is online. But for other nearby Normans you'll have to look on an actual census book for I believe the Normans are on the pg before or after

Now I do see someone's posted a picture of the tombstone of Rebecca's son Elijah in County-Line Cemetery & you might find her tombstone there - but even if it has the name Norman on it ahe might still have been a Cherokee posing as a Norman (See Jackson's Removal Act).

Herb, you stated: "One woman related on our side is a Morman and claims that Rebecca is listed as a Cherokee princess on the LDS records."

Sometimes you have to use circumstantial evidence to prove a theory or a family connection, but then there needs to be a preponderance of such evidence. Just because someone claims that Rebecca is listed as Cherokee ( and a "princess" ???? please... that term is so overused that it is ridiculous) on LDS records doesn't prove anything. What record was she referring to? What actual documents were they using to prove this? I have found erroneous information on LDS pedigree files pertaining to another branch of my family that I have proved otherwise, so just because it is an LDS file doesn't necessarily make it true. Unless the source is listed, I take the file as theory and go from there to try to locate factual documents for proof just like I would with any other researcher's information. Even if sources are listed or if it is a transcription, I still try to view the actual record if possible. I would hope that anyone using my data would do likewise.

Re: "Nevertheless I took the position she was a Norman in my book based on the statements found in old letters by 2 ladies who were then deceased." Again, what was this based on ? .. a family bible? a marriage record? Were they direct descendents only 1 or 2 generations removed who therefore might have personal knowledge? Or, did they state that they "believed" that she was a Norman based on family traditions. I am not saying that they were not correct. My Mother knew the surnames for 3 generations back on her Mother's side, but it was not until I looked at family bibles and other actual records that I was able to find the given names and also prove that she was correct.

As far as early census records go, the earliest record that I have located for Elijah is the 1830 census where he is in Meriwether County, Ga with his family. I have not been able to locate them on the 1820 census yet. ( this doesn't mean the record doesn't exist, I just haven't found it). Based on the ages of the children, Elijah and Rebecca were together by then, but where? I will continue to try to find his 1820 census record so that it might give me a clue where to start looking for wills etc of his and Rebecca's ancestors.

Or, could Elijah have already gone to the area that would eventually become Meriwether County before 1820 and then would not be on the record? That area was not considered part of the state of Georgia as it was not ceded to Georgia until 1826 when it first became Troup County and then Meriwether in 1827. If he had indeed gone there when it was still the frontier and possibly married Rebecca there, it would lend some credence to her being Native American. But that was Creek territory, so she would not have been Cherokee.

I made my original posting to inquire if someone might have found an actual record that would break down the brick wall of Rebecca's ancestry. But, those records may never be found. Until I am able to locate proof, I will continue to list her as just Rebecca ( maiden name unknown) on my tree.

Gwen

One woman related on our side is a Morman and claims that Rebecca is listed as a Cherokee princess on the LDS records.

Also, because Mitchams provided financial resources for Joseph Smith to get his religion going, I understand they went ahead & traced the Mitcham ancestors back to Adam.
Somewhere buried in their records may be answers
--
Nevertheless I took the position she was a Norman in my book based on the statements found in old letters by 2 ladies who were then deceased.

Also I think if you look at early Ga census records you will find Mitchams living close to Normmans
-__
But it could go either way & shr could have been a Cherokee passing asa Norman

Wow, it is amazing that these records are so legible. I have some copies of court transcripts dating back to 1898 and 1903 (some are hand written) where my Grandfather Hayes went to court to prove the Indian ancestry of four of his children and they are very difficult to read. I am having difficulty proving that he existed prior to about 1893, but I'll keep working on it.

Your response did go through. I pulled my original message as I had signed in under the wrong account and then resent it again.

I also found a land record for your George and have attached it. Let me know if it does not come through.

Gwen

Linda,

There were definitly 2 George W. Mitchams. The one that you speak of (1798 - 1883) and George W. Mitcham who was the son of Elijah Mitcham of Meriwether County.
I believe that your George W. Mitcham was the brother to Hezekiah Mitcham. I need to go back over my records, but I believe that both made a stop in Georgia before migrating to Alabama and then Hezekiah migrated to Texas. A George W. Mitcham (some records under G.W.) married to Mary can be found living in Clark County, Alabama on the 1850, 1860 and 1870. I have seen another person's research online that stated that he died in 1883, so he should be on the 1880 census, but I have not located that yet. There is a George Mitcham who married Mary Green on April 19, 1819 in Clark County, Alabama. This is from a transcription of Alabama marriages, so without seeing the original records, I do not know if this is correct.

My Elijah Mitcham was born circa 1787.I have never been able to connect him to his parents, but when I found evidence of Hezekiah and your George W. Mitcham, I began to wonder if Elijah was possibly their brother or related in some other way. I am now in the process of searching for records on George and Hezekiah to see if I can make the connection.

Gwen

You are right about those names. I have done a lot of work on my Mother's family and names do seem to repeat.

This is what Mo Gates says about "our" Joseph: (I just recently started exchanging information with Mo, so I don't know how much research she has done nor do I know what sources she had used).

Joseph L MITCHAM, son of George Washington MITCHAM and Mary Ann GREENE was born on
05-Jan-1839 in Clarke, Alabama, USA. He died on 31-Oct-1908 in Kopperl, Bosque, Texas, USA.
He married Martha Ann WALKER on 17-Aug-1865 in Clarke, Alabama, USA.

This is what she says about George:

George Washington MITCHAM, son of Richard B MEACHAM and ELIZABETH was born about
1798 in North Carolina, USA. He died in 1883 in Clarke, Alabama, USA. He married Mary Ann
GREENE on 30-Apr-1819 in Clarke, Alabama, USA.
