All a matter of class, I think.

My family were agricultural labourers in Somerset. So, being illiterate, all their entries in Parish Registers and censuses would be made by the clerks or enumerators. It would depend on the accent of the speaker and the background of the listener, who were sometimes barely literate themselves, as to what ended up on the page. The more variations I come across, the less I think it matters.
Makes searches a pain, though!

I understand that by the 1900s the census forms were sometimes filled in by the children, benefiting from widespread education at last. How many family surnames might have been settled by how it was spelt in the register by the teacher on the first day at school, I wonder?

Mike
Hi Mike,
I am looking for Matcham. Upon reading your post for the gradual name change Mitcham, Meacham, Micham and Matcham, does this apply only to your family or is it that the name it's self has changed through out the time.

Mary Matcham b. 1755, Wiltshire, England. d. 7 Nov 1815, Richmond, NSW, Australia. Married Robert Pitt Abt. 1770/71,

Robert Pitt b. 1740, Balchalwal, Dorset, England. d. 1795, Dorset, Eng.

Does this fit with yours ?
