This is what I have on your direct line to George W. I'm still working on this but most of it is verified. Aaron
Mizell is a brother to my ancestor, Timothy
Mizell.
6. Aaron
Mizell was born about 1730 in
North Carolina to John and Margaret
Mizell. Aaron appears on the 1753 tax list of
Chowan County,
North Carolina. Aaron Mezel served on November 25, 1754 in the Pasquotank Militia under Captain James Farlee, while a resident of
Chowan County. In the Procession Docket for
Chowan County on October 25, 1755, it was recorded that Aaron Measel’s land was processioned (an annual duty of the Parish Vestry at that time). Aaron is not listed in the 1758
Chowan County tax list. His residence between 1755-68 was probably in
Chowan County. In the year 1768, Aaron Mizale and his wife sold a tract of land in
Chowan County to Thomas Sumner.

It appears that Aaron
Mizell moved to
Bertie County,
North Carolina in 1774. In the
Bertie County deed records, Aaron
Mizell of Perquimons County, planter, purchased 435 acres for 95 lbs., located on the eastside of Culkoldmaker Swamp from John Newborn on February 22, 1774, which was witnessed by John
Mizell and Thomas
Mizell. Aaron was listed in the 1774
Bertie County tax list. That same year, Aaron was appointed overseer of a road, replacing John
Mewborn. He was also appointed to a committee to determine damage costs when a new road was built and assigned to work on it in 1774. That road was to run over Peald
Cypress to Windsor Road, indicating that this is near where Aaron lived at that time. Aaron
Mizell signed a petition in 1777 swearing allegience to the colony of
North Carolina and not to King George III.
Aaron Meazell was replaced as overseer of the road for his district in August 1779. He was in the tax list of 1781 for
Bertie County. He purchased 275 acres from John
Cake adjoining Cuckoldmaker Swamp on May 12, 1783, witnessed by Thomas
Mizell and Marget
Mizell. Aaron Muzell and his brother John were appointed to serve on the grand and petit juries in May 1784.

In May 1785, the
Bertie County court ordered that Aaron
Mizell was given permission to keep a public grist mill where he had already built one. Aaron purchasd 100 acres on October 19, 1786 in
Bertie County from Thomas Ward, witnessed by Thomas
Mizell.
The 1790 census of
Bertie County lists “Aaron Mezil†as having 2 males under the age of 16 and 2 females living in his household. He owned no slaves. Aaron
Mizell served on a
Bertie County grand jury in May 1790. On July 25, 1790 in
Bertie County, Aaron purchased 300 acres from Jasper Charlton on the north of
Wills Quarter Swamp, witnessed by Thomas
Mizell. Aron
Mizell entered 50 acres of swamp land in
Bertie County on November 20, 1790, located at the lower end of Charlton’s lane on Peal
Cypress Swamp. Aaron could not write his own name, making an “X†when he witnessed the will of William
Mizell on March 21, 1793. Aaron wrote out his own will in
Bertie County on July 11, 1800. He made his mark on this document, which bore the name Aaron Miezell on it.
His bequests were as follows: to son Thomas Miezell, half of the land where I now live being the part where he now lives, together with 1/3 of my grist and saw mill; to son Isaac Miezle, remaining half of the land I gave to Thomas Miezell & 1/3 of my grist and saw mill; to son Joseph Miezle, small tract on
Wills Quarter Swamp between his own line and a small branch adjacent to
Moses Miezle; son
Moses Miezle, remaining part of that tract and the remaining 1/3 of my grist and saw mill. Son John Miezle received 20 lbs. from Aaron. Daughters Margaret, Milley and Judith received 10 lbs. each. To the heirs of his son William, who had died in 1793, Aaron left 10 lbs.
In November 1803, he sold land to
Moses Measell, witnessed by Thomas
Mizell and “Saacâ€
Mizell. He sold land to Isaac Meisle, 1806 and to Thomas
Mizell on November 22, 1806 (235 acres for 200 lbs.). This was his final appearance in the public records save for when his will was probated in
Bertie County in May 1809. Aaron appointed his sons Thomas, Joseph and
Moses as executors. The sale of Aaron Mizell’s property was held on September 15, 1809.

15. John
Mizell Jr. was born about 1765-70 in
Bertie County,
North Carolina to Aaron
Mizell. He married first to Lidea
Penney, daughter of James
Penney. The 1790 census of
Bertie County lists John on p.14. He had just gotten married and had no children. James
Penney wrote his will on September 15, 1791. He named his friend John
Mizell his executor. James
Penney left a bequest to his daughter Lidea
Mizell. John
Mizell was appointed guardian of Thomas
Penney, orphan of James
Penney, on August 6, 1792.
Thomas
Penney wrote his own will on April 10, 1795, leaving a bequest of 143 acres of land on
Wills Quarter Swamp to Ann
Mizell, daughter of John
Mizell. If she died before she married or before the age of 21, the land was to go to John
Mizell. John
Mizell was the executor of Thomas Penney’s will. John conducted the inventory of his property on July 25, 1795. John
Mizell remarried on December 13, 1796 in
Bertie County,
North Carolina to Martha Todd, born about 1777 in
North Carolina, so his wife Lidea must have passed away.
On February 16, 1790, Thomas Sutton sold to John
Mizell of
Bertie County 200 acres on
Cypress Swamp, for 50 lbs. This deed was witnessed by William Cowin & Thomas
Mizell. On February 10, 1791, William
Cowand Jr. sold to “John
Mizell Junr., son of Aaronâ€, 120 acres for 85 lbs., which adjoined
Cypress Swamp,
Wills Quarter Swamp. This deed was also witnessed by Thomas
Mizell. John
Mizell served as bondsman for his brother Joseph when he got married on March 22, 1791. John and Martha
Mizell sold land to George Outlaw in 1798.
John was listed as a Junior in the 1800
Bertie County census, aged 26-45. He signed as a member of a committee to sell the land of George
Hughs, deceased, on March 15, 1809. After the death of his Uncle John
Mizell Sr. in 1803, John became known as “Seniorâ€. John
Mizell was a charter member of the Ross
Baptist Church in early 1804. It was located near Cucklemaker Creek. In 1810, he was still listed as John
Mizell Junior, even though he was the oldest man named John in the family. He probably kept the title to keep things simple. John
Mizell served as the adminstrator for Timothy
Mizell, whose estate sale was held on March 10, 1813. John purchased many items, including a Bible at the sale. John Mizells was listed in the 1815 tax list of Capt. Elisha A. Rhodes. He owned 163 acres. As John
Mizell Sr., he purchased his brother Isaac’s rights in the family gristmill on October 13, 1818. Aaron
Mizell and Martin Morris witnessed the deed.
In August 1827, “John Mizells, son of Aaron†sold 20 acres to William
Hoggard in
Bertie County for $32.50. John signed his name. The deed was witnessed by James L. Bryan. John Meazles, aged 60-70 was listed on p.363 of the
Bertie County census in 1830. On December 4, 1830, John
Mizell gave his son Thomas 100 acres. That same date he gave 135 acres to his son George and 200 acres to his son Jonathan
Mizell. John Mizells gave his son Starkey L. 88.5 acres on November 18, 1831. Martha
Mizell, age 73, presumably the wife of John
Mizell, was living with John Mitchell age 31, his wife Mary and four
Mizell children ages 1-6 in 1850. John
Mizell was not counted by the census taker, wherever he was living.
John Mizells wrote a will in
Bertie County on July 5, 1852. It was proven on February 7, 1854. He appointed sons Jonathan and Thomas as executors of the will. Bequests made were 1/3 of his grist mill to son Jonathan, remainder of the grist mill to Elizabeth
Mizell, one desk and $150 to daughter Sally
Hoggard and $150 to daughter Penelope Mitchell.

Mizell) Butler and Josiah
Mizell by the census taker. John Mitchell, born ca.1819, a carpenter, was living in
Bertie County, 1850. Living with him was Martha
Mizell, age 73, possibly his grandmother.
40. Jonathan
Mizell was born about 1808 in
Bertie County,
North Carolina to John and Martha (Todd)
Mizell. He married first to an unknown woman and secondly, about 1835 to Mary Boswell, born about 1810 in
North Carolina. His father gave him 200 acres on December 4, 1830 in
Bertie County. Jonathan purchased land from his brother George on January 15, 1833 for $200. The 1840 census of
Bertie County lists Jonathan Mizeles, aged 30-40 on p.116. He owned no slaves then. Two members of his household were involved in farming, one in the manufacturing trade (carpentry, most likely). Jonathan had no female the age of his wife living with him in 1840 but did have a woman aged 60-70 in his household. His wife must have died and an older female relative came to live with him to assist with the child rearing.
Jonathan purchased property at the estate sale of Thomas Easton in 1843. On February 22, 1844 Jonathan
Mizell purchased property at the estate sale of Anney
Hughs. Jonathan was farming in
Bertie Co., 1850-80. Resided
Whites Township,
Bertie County in 1870-80. John as he was known, wrote his will on October 14, 1889 in
Bertie County. It was proven on May 25, 1892. He wanted a 20-40 acre plot equally divided between his children Sarah White, George
Mizell, Jonathan T. Mizell, Lucinda J. Nixon and James P. Mizell.
