My wife Mary is a Moak, her grandmother, Clotee Brent Moak and her grandfather Oliver Moak lived near Bogue Chitto MS. They moved to Port Arthur TX and had two sons Billy Joe and Oliver Moak.

We now live in Charleston SC and with the help of a geneology written by Lennox Moak ( one time comptroler of the city of Philidelphia) We have tried to find the Fontanbleau Plantation site where Andrew Moak (Mog) was indentured with some success.

In Lennoxs' book the familty history is fuzzy. He thought Andrew got off the boat in Charleston and later moved up to the Columbia SC area. There was some discussion that Andrew was Swiss, but my father in law was told that the family was Scotch Irish and a little native american. He stuck with that, because he kinda liked that. He thought the name might have been Mc Oak.

There are some Smoaks in Charleston and they think they are related as well.

My wife, through her grandmother is a decendent of the Brents, Prices and Howards also. Have a picture of Jacob Brent who looks alot like Lincoln.

Question for Jefferson

Jefferson,

I have been doing research on the Thorn family in NJ/Seneca Co. NY. I saw that you had co-authored the book published by Daniel Murphy. I am researching a Thorn family that is in Seneca Co. prior to Webster and wondered if you had come upon this group during your research. Thank you in advance for your response.

I was trying to find an email address to contact you and since I a member of ancestry, I found this means.

Kathy Swope
swope@ptd.net

Thank you. Actually I had never looked closely at the Sea Gulls in my possession. Lennox Lee Moak, my father, was actually a junior in 1928 so I am puzzled why he is listed in the sophomore class. He graduated from Port Arthur High School in 1929 and went on to Southwest Texas Teachers State College in San Marcos, where he completed his college education in 3 years. I have copies of the Sea Gulls for 1926, 1927, 1928 and 1929.

Jefferson M. Moak

Hello my name is Cathy, my Grandmother was Zola Emily Moak she passed in 2001. Her father was Jacob Henry Moak and Grandfather was Simeon Moak. I know there is a Moak family reunion in Durham, I believe it is every year. I have pictures from one I attended in 2004-2005, but I'm not sure on names of those in the pictures. I am just getting my family history going here and not sure what kinda of input I can give but I see there is alot of 'relatives' here. I am looking for pictures and stories. I do have some pictures that I to share as well. Feel free to contact me at marcelcathy@comcast.net anytime.

Thanks,

Cathy
Catherine Marie Palmer
Carlos Buell Moak (9/11/1916 - 7/28/1995) and Genevieve Weekly (12/3/1920 - 7/12/1983) had five children, according to my records:

Carlos Buell Moak, Jr. (7/10/1941 - 9/19/1953)
Connley Darrow Moak m. Nancy Rogers (2 children of whom I am aware.)
Clifton Ted Moak (8/23/1945 - 6/5/1955)
Jane Ann Moak
Jennifer Moak

I have the actual birth dates of Connley, Jane and Jennifer. I would like to have any information about the family that you can provide. Please contact me off-line at jefferson.moak@verizon.net

For the record, Carlos Buell Moak is the son of
Zachariah Moak, Jr. (12/27/1875-2/26/1954) and Rhoda Jane McCaffrey (11/18/1892-3/23/1985)
the grandson of
Zachariah Moak (9/18/1830 - 3/12/1894) and Serena Brown (2/3/1836 - 10/16/1924)
the great-grandson of
Andrew Moak (3/1/1782 - 3/1/1855) and Susannah Dominey (11/18/1790 - 1/16/1841) This is the Andrew Moak, for whom there is an historical marker in Lincoln County (which I have visited 3 times since 2000) If you go past the gate at which the historical marker is placed down an abandoned road approximately a quarter or a third of a mile you will find the Andrew Moak cemetery which is fairly rundown.

Zachariah is the sixth child of Andrew and Susannah (Andrew's second wife) and the 13th child overall of Andrew Moak (who married two Dominey sisters).

Jefferson M.
My mother was a Moak from SE Mississippi before she married. She was one of five children born the Carlos Buell and Genevieve Moak. There were no Samual's in the bunch. But you may find some records that are from the "MOAK'S CREEK" area. It is between McComb and Brookhaven. I would ask my mother.. but she is NOT one to talk about the "past". If you can think of anything else that may help... I will try, but I can't go very far back on that side of the family. I do know there is a historical marker in the area of an "Andrew Moak" if that will help you in a search...
The Moak (Maag) family of New York is of Swiss descent. Jacob Moak of Schoharie County is of the New York branch.

The Moak family of South Carolina is not related to the New York Moaks on this side of the Atlantic but may also be of Swiss descent as well. Despite some diligent work, Andrew Moak, the immigrant, has not been definitely identified in Europe.

I have no idea where the Juan originated. Jan Skinner, who did several early posts to the Moak Message Board, is also a descendant of Charles Juan Moak through his daughter, Rosalie. If you can track her down, she might have an answer for you.

Jefferson M. Moak

Re: Moak: Chester Juan and Elsie May

According to Michael Moak's "The Descendants of Han Jacob Moak", Chester Juan Moak was born on 14 August 1904 and died on 5 December 1987. He married twice - to Rosalie Alma Landschoot and Elsie Clarke Gillies. Michael Moak only has mention of one child - Rosalie Alma Moak, born in 1927 to his first wife.

Chester Juan Moak is the sixth (of seven) child and third (of four) son of Myron Charles Moak (29 July 1874 - 30 December 1956) and Elizabeth Esther (Minnie) Gray.

Myron Charles Moak is fourth (of four) child and third son of Charles J. Moak (5 July 1845 - 1901) and Alice Carpenter.

Charles J. Moak is the second (of five) child and second (of three) son of Nicholas I. Moak (16 Dec 1815 - 7 Jul 1886) and Minerva Carpenter. Nicholas Moak moved from New York to Michigan. He died in St. Clair, Michigan. Minerva Carpenter was a native of Ypsilanti, Michigan.

Nicholas Moak was the seventh (of seven) child and fourth son of Jacob Moak (1755 - 17 March 1855) and Maria Rosenberg. Jacob married twice: the second marriage occurred in November 1816 to Margaret Fenner, by whom he had an additional six children. Jacob died in Indiana and was buried in Michigan in the family plot.

Hope this helps.

Jefferson M. Moak
Researching the South Carolina, Mississippi and Southern Illinois branches of the Moak Family.
Thanks. I didn't have the birthdate for Lily or know that she had been married to Charles Carrol. She probably married Henry Wesley Riehl later in life. Henry "Harry" was born Oct. 16, 1890 in Chico. He committed suicide Oct. 30, 1955, just a few months after Lily May died. At the time of his death he was living with Mrs. Belle Sample. We don't have the marriage information about Lily and Henry. If you find this it would be greatly appreciated. Do you know if there are any close relatives of Mrs. Sample who may have information? Let me know if there is any information you would like about Henry.

Lily May Moak was my GGrandfathers sister. The only information I have on her is her birth (6 March 1892)
and Death in 1955, with a notation that she was married to a Charles Carrol. I live in Butte County and am currently (as time allows) digging deeper in to that part of my family history. I will let you know what turns up on her, if you wish.
Dale

Depending on his age, you can try to look up the census record for the census after his birth. Or maybe the previous censuses for his father's name and try to follow up tracing ny branches to verify the validity.

Thanks Nelson, its a long complicated story, but you're right, that's where my father techinically lives. The problem I'm having is I can't trace farther back than him. I'm having no luck finding anything about where Sam Moak, Sr (or his mother, Minnie Weaver) are from. Nor do I know the names or locations of my father's other potential siblings to ask them directly. I was actually hoping that on sure luck and chance a distant cousin's friend's brother would happen chance to think the names I posted sounded familar, and could help jump start my hunt. I'm not one of those people that are like "here are details, now do the work for me," Its just that I really don't have a clear where to start! I really appreciate what you've done for me. Good luck on your own searches!

I have no problems with making the book available. Don't worry about this. I have had a number of inquiries over the years myself. The $ 35.00 charge is consistent with what I have done in the past. I'm glad to see people interested in obtaining copies for their collections.

I'm interested in obtaining any information on the descendants of Andrew Moak, the immigrant. My computer database currently has 9132 direct descendants and I am learning about more every time I do some more research.

Jefferson M. Moak

Jefferson- It is great to hear from you. I have had this book that was given to over 15 years ago and was in fragile condition. My husband and I have just finished scanning the entire book and we had no clue as to where to get any others. Your father did a wonderful job! Please know that when we said it was complete, we were referring to the scanning and allowing others the wealth of info your father researched.
Also, please be aware that we are not "making money" on this, this was merely paying the 2 1/2 cents it costs per page plus binding, plus shipping and handling. I am so excited to meet the author's son. I am most willing to share any of my information with you. I have lots of info that is more current, but still may be helpful.

Thank you for writing-

Amy Hicks
The only information that I have is that Bryan W. Moak married Edna A. Grohn in 1930. She was born about 1913. (1930 U.S. Census, Chicago, Cook County, Illinois, E.D. 16-716, sheet 3-B.) I checked the online Illinois death index 1916-1950 for Edna just now without success. It may be that her death was after 1950.

I would be interested in obtaining any information that you have on this family and its related lines.

Please contact me privately at jefferson.moak@verizon.net

Jefferson M.
Mom is fine . I wanted to get her to go to the Moak family reunion in July. I've been working on family history . My girls really don't know their west coast families. My husbands family are modern day immigrants and they have grown up around their cultures. There is a town upstate named after a family the Moaks married into. It's called Slingerlands. We are definitely taking a trip to Seattle in November. I guess you would call me one of the older cousins. I remember many wonderful trips to Grandma and grandpa Sam's house in Chico. I have very fond memories of sitting on their porch. Grandpa Sam in his wooden rocker smoking his pipe and telling stories. I would like to keep in touch and keep researching the family. I haven't seen you since you were very young. Let's keep in touch. You can email me . I would love to hear from you.

I have an Nancy Moke/Moake married to James M. Furlow
28 September 1853 in Franklin Co., IL. She is the daughter of Henry Moke/Moake and Charlotte Hunter.

I find James and Nancy Furlow living next door to Henry and Charlotte in 1860 Sulpher Springs, Williamson Co., IL Census.

And also later I find a A.J. Moake listed under Cassie Furlow ( James and Nancy's daughter) in the 1900 Western Prec., Williamson Co., IL census listed as 56 year old widower, living with her has a boarder.

Then again I find an Jackson Moake living under Solomon Furlow in 1910 Hurst Villiage, Williamson Co., IL census. Age 66 years old still listed as a boarder.

Who is this A. Jackson Moake. I am trying to trace Nancy Moake's family.
