Hi – my grandmother was Mary Moakley, married to George Eddy. Sadly, my mother and her siblings are deceased. Just recently, by absolute coincidence I recently became acquainted with the grand-daughter of Thomas Moakley, married Mary Kelly. I’ve enjoyed reading this board – thank you. I’ll add information if I come across anything additional. Thanks again.

I am looking for any information about Moakley's in Peabody MA. My paternal great-grandmother was born Sarah Ann Moakley. Her parents were unable to take care of her so she was taken in by either relatives or friends by the name of Grady. Sarah married a James Burke. If anyone has any information, it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Cyrena

Would anyone know in what town(s) Thomas Mochler or Bridget Connolly were born or lived in Ireland? I'm Paul Moran, the oldest child of Theresa Vallely Moran. She is still alive and doing very well. All of my aunts and uncles, my mother's siblings, have since passed. My grandmother was Rosetta Moakley. I never knew her. She died long before I was born. By the way, my mother told me that Bridget Connolly died as a result of a blow to the head from a softball not a golf ball. I believe that a golf ball would be the more lethal. Please let me know if you any further information abouth the Moakleys or the Vallelys for that matter.

I can hardly believe someone put a query on the Moakley surname message board.

My great-great grandmother was Sarah Moakley who married Horace Sylvester. Sarah was born about 1825 in Boston? Her father was from Ireland. Story goes he was studying to be a priest in Nova Scotia, but met his future wife so gave up the priesthood for marriage. They then moved to Boston? I don't know their names, etc. They could have stayed in Nova Scotia or they could have come to Maine or Massachusetts. I just don't know.

Sarah and Horace lived in Cambridge and later Roxbury and then later moved to Nebraska where they both died.

Anyone know anything about these?

Sheila

Moakley is a deritative of moclair from France. The surname means bad account. My understanding is the Moakleys were french Protestants that immigrated to Ireland and many generations later to the US. al least in my wing of the family the name formerly Mockler and mockley and then altered to Moakley.

kevin

This is in regards to the book dealer that had the book from Sandwich,Ma. My Great grandmother was Bridget Connolly Moakley who died in Sandwich in 1922.According to oral history shared with me by my grandfather Peter Moakley she (Bridget ) got hit with a golf ball on the first vacation of her life. Her sons sent her on vacation .This info is confirmed by the Sandwich historical society and Sandwich town records. Incidentally I now have a home in Sandwich,Ma strange co-incidence. Mr. Book dealer please contact me if possible.

thanks
kevin

Jerri Rhodes-

Jerri, I met your Dad perhaps 4 years ago but here is some more data

Peter Moakley -married Anna Cronin (dhe died in 1922) buried in Holy Cross Cemetary in Malden,ma The two Children of this marriage was Helena Moakley and Anna Moakley(I am anna "s son -Anna married Rudolph Zygadlo

Peter later married Catherine McDonough and she died on Feb 7,1927 while pregnant.Catherine is buried with Peters parents in Mt. Benedict Cemetary in West Roxbury,Ma. The story as told by Agnes Moakley Norris is that Peter"s Mother would roll over in her grave is he ever married a McDonough.

Peter"s third wife (and final) was Irene Hines Moakley. The children of this marriage was Francis X Moakley and Marie Moakley OToole of Quincy. Interesting story goes with this is that Peter"s brother Joe Moakley(Congressman Joe"s father) would always say to Pete that this wife would bury him(and she did).

Debra,

Do you know either your father or grandfather's first name? I did not see them in your two posts. Also, does your dad have any brothers and/or sisters? If so, what are their names?

You said something about having to go to Brooklyn to find out some info. Would you mind sharing some of that when you can?

If you have any questions to ask me, I will try my best to answer them.

I, too, have relatives from Brooklyn NY. Could I possibly get more details from you, as your message was rather sketchy.

I'll give you a little background to see if there's some connection:

My parents are living in Long Island NY; they are Gerard (1932 - ) and Bernice (Hartman, 1933 - ).

My father is the youngest of 8. Two of his brothers, Daniel and George, live in Queens.

My grandfather was Charles (1884 - 1963), who owned a pole business named Charles Knight (started c.1905). My grandmother was Rose (not sure of maiden name, 1899 -1981).

At this point, I do not know of any connection between myself and the late Congressman Joe Moakley. I look forward to hearing from you.

I couldn't believe there was actually a post with Mary Moakley! But, unfortunately, I know she isn't the one I'm searching for. I'm sorry. I'm looking for a Mary who married Con. Kennedy in Waukon, Iowa, Allamakee County, and had a child - Loretta Ellen, born in 1888. Wish we had something! Thanks.
Donna
hdjd86@yahoo.com

I am looking for information on my great grandmother named Mary Moakley. She was born in Ireland circa 1849, moved to Massachusettes and married Marvin Backus in 1869. She died in Lee, Mass in 1914 and is buried there. I am intersted in any information about her place of birth in Ireland, her family there (Parents John Moakley and Bridget Carr) and her passage to America.
