Marba-
I talked with my dad and he would like to talk to you. If you email me I'll give you his phone number. In the last few years he has gathered a lot of information. Maybe you'll both have something of interest for each other.

Lara
estrzempa@sprynet.com

I too have changed email address to alar256@gmail.com. Reviewing the Moehling messages posted and reviewing the brief data I have, it seems that your John Conrad Moehling b 1850 and the Conrad Moehling Jr b 1842 that married my gg-aunt Wilhelmine Emma Sander are brothers. Conrad and Emma, as she was known, had 3 sons John b 1876, Henry b 1879 and Christoff b 1883. I have pictures of Conrad and Emma, each of the boys some with their unidentified brides and a picture of Henry's house.

Marba

Charles Mulling-banana boat captain from Swinemunde Germany

Found some info on my Charles Mulling who shows up in New Orleans around 1870/80. Got parent's names as Ludwig Mulling (with an umlaut over the U) and Wilhelmine Grosch. I think his name was changed to Mulling from something German that sounds like Mulling (lots of choices).
Original info is.....
My Great grandfather, Charles Joseph Mulling was a banana boat ship captain stationed in New Orleans. He is said to have come from Swinemunde, Germany (Swinoujscie) which is on the border with Poland around 1878. He was just 14yrs. at the time. He dies in Belize on New Years day 1913 and is later moved to St. Vincent De Paul cemetary no. 1 on Louisa St. Has anyone ever heard of this or any Mulling family from this area?

Thanks,
Karen Lyon
karenlyon@ntown.com

I believe it is Hanover. The records from Germany dating back to 1770 and 1880 show the family was born and married in Haste Hessen Schaumburg, Germany. They belonged to the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Hohnhurst. The first generation immigrated to the United States in May of 1849. I hope that is helpful. I'll email more later

Another Moehling

Hi Moehlings. I came across this site through a Google search. Thought I'd throw in what little I know about our family history to see where we fit in.

My great grandfather was August Moehling. I'm not sure if he was born in the U.S. or not. He ran a corn canning factory in Iowa for many years. He had four sons: LaVern (my grandfather), Clarence, Everett, and Art. My grandfather settled in Wagner, SD and was a lineman for the county. He and my grandmother, Muriel, are both deceased. They had three children: Bruce (my dad), Sue, and Terry. I live in Minneapolis, MN and have one younger brother named Jeffrey.

August is as far back as I know. Anyone know how we fit into the picture?

Josh
Carrie: I know who you are, and have seen your photo, despite never having met. When I visit Esther she points out the new photos from her display shelf. I also remember Aunt Hulda, especially from the 60's (I was born in 1954) when I stayed at the farm with her, Uncle Kurt and Grandpa Moehling. My mother Ruth (Walter's youngest sister), my wife Mary and I recently took Esther to lunch along with Geri (and friend Roger), Uncle Alvin, his daughters Merilee (with Dennis) and Sandra. A great time talking of so much history and everyone's activities. Dean had a cold and could not join us. Have fun at the 90th for Esther - I heard about it recently. Jim

Moehling history

Marba, We are related (by marriage) and I'll see if I can explain the family line from using my mother's notes. I have much of the same information as you have. Emma Sanders married Conrad Moehling. Conrad Moehling is the fourth sibling born in a sibship of six to John Conrad Moehling (born 2-18 1804)and Engel Maria Sophia Pohlman (born 10-28-1806. They had 2 daughters, Dorthea and Engel Marie and 4 sons, Henry, Conrad( your relation), Christopher and John Conrad (my great grandfather). It is my understanding that all of the children except my great grandfather were born in Germany. Conrad Moehling and Emma Sanders had three children John W., Henry F. and Christ. John W. married Emily Schwake, Henry F. married Frieda Schwake and Christ married Martha Busse. I have a very handsome and rather formal picture of Conrad (standing)and Emma seated next to him. As soon as I figure out how to do my scanner I'll send it to the message sight for you. I'm not sure where Conrad is buried, but I will check out the lead at Immanual Lutheran. I know the parents John Conrad Moehling and Sophia Pohlman are buried in a very small German cemetary on Rand Road near Central Road in Des Plaines, IL.
I hope James Henry Maitland is reading this message as well as he is more closely related to you. His relations (grandparents?) are Henry Fredrich Moehling and Frida Schwake.
I would love to see any pictures you have. Do you have a scanner? If not you should get one we could have fun sending pictures. Take care.

I have been having problems posting messages today and replies have been even more difficult. However............

Heather, What is the relationship of John Conrad to Conrad? Are they father and son? In any case I have pictures of Conrad and Emma Moehling and their children - all sons if memory serves me.

I have other unidentifed pictures that I suspect may be more Moehlings. If not Moehlings they may be of Emma's sister's families.

I will contact you at your email address to exchange more information.

Excitedly, Marba

John Conrad Moehling

It is so exciting to find other Moehlings interested in their family history. I am currently in the process of writing a book about John Conrad Moehling. He was born October 15, 1850 and died September 3, 1939. J.C. Moehling is my great grandfather. He was one of Mt. Prospect's early pioneers. He opened the first general store. He also served as Mt. Prospect's first postmaster and housed the post office in the general store. My mother, Gertrude Francek (Moehling)who was one of the co-founders of the Mt. Prospect Historical Society saved the actual 48 slot post office and donated it to the MP Historical Museum. The general store was the building that was on the corner of 83 and Elmhurst Road and was in a flurry of controversy over whether or not the village should perserve the building. It was a miracle, but it was saved and is now being refurnished as an office building and will remain forever a historical site. My mother has many notes about John Conrad's siblings, their marriages and their children. However, this is an area that I need to learn more about. I certainly would like to include any stories and/or pictures of the siblings in my book. I hope to hear from any relatives or those interested in the Moehling history.
Walter and Esther Moehlings grandaughter

I am a grandchild of Walter C. Moehling and Esther MOehling of Arlington Hts. Illinois. It is amazing to hear of more relatives that have never been brought up before. When we were young we used to go and visit Holda at her apartment where she really couldn't speak and we had to use a machine and I always remember thinking she was one of the most positive thinking people I had ever met and she always had a smile for me. Walter has passed on Nov. 14 1996 and he is really missed by all of us. Grandma is 89 this year and we want to have a big bash this nov. for her 90 birthday party. This is sure fun, my brother Tim Moehling is now in Germany with his Army career and he wants to know more also, I'm sure. He is in the right spot to find out all kind of good things.
My great-great grandfather's sister, Wilhelmine Emma Sander, married
Conrad Moehling b. 1842. Their children were John Moehling b. 1876, Henry Moehling b. 1879, Christoff
Moehling b 1883 and died 1927 and maybe an Otto. Wilhelmine and Christoff are buried
in Immanuel Lutheran Church Cemetery, Rand Rd. at Seegers Rd. in Des Plaines. Any of these
names ring a bell?
Moehling Family History

I'm back on line after being off for a while. My new email address is forenjuv@attbi.com I will try to find out exactly where our relatives lived in Germany so as to respond to you Jan.
