Moffit/Moffitt Cousins

I have hit a brick wall on my Grt Grandfather:
Richard Monroe Moffitt,b. Jan 1 1856, Sunflower, Miss.
d. Dec 4 1933, in Formand, Ark at the home of his Dau.
Mrs A A (Josie) Deal. According to his obit he was survived by a brother John Moffitt and sister Martha West of Searcy, Ark.
I have not been able to locate his brother or sister, and mostly can not verify his parents. I have found him listed with father as William, Henry, Richard and Robert but can not verify or fit any of them,
RM also had a cousin W.A.TENNY, have part of a leter written to hiem and signed your cousin W A Tinney.
My grandfather John Henry,(s/o RM) is known to have had a uncle named
Henry Lee Moffitt and have verified that his father was William R. Moffitt. But can't connect him to Richard M.
A 1st cousin to John Henry was a Dick MOORE, guessing RM's sister married a MOORE
2nd cousin to Jess Moore.
My father Ralph (s/o John H.) had cousins named Boyd and Inez, from Tx, but don't remember thier last names.
So if anyone knows of these Cousins please let me know.
BeeG.
Re: Moffit (SUSAN SOHPIA MOFFETT)

While there is some variation in the spelling of her last name, that varies from Moffit to Moffet to to Moffett, Moffat, etc. AFTER HER MARRIAGE TO THE rEV: Daniel Hoff (his 2nd spouse, after the death of W#1), she was rendered a widow in about 1802 by the death of the Rev. DANIEL HOFF, and she moved in 1805 from near Manassas, VA via Pittsburgh, and by flatboat down the Ohio River with her children, their inlaws (the DYEs) and other neighboring families (Chambers, Hills, etc.) and they took up residence in Duck Creek, Lawrence Twp.(near Marietta), Washington Co., OH), where she resided until her death in April 1819. She is believed to have been intered in either the Stanley Cem., Lawrence Twp. or Mound Cem., Washington Co., OH. Her son, JONATHAN F. (or JOHN F.) HOFF, pre deceased her in 1812. The obit. of her slave-catching son, ENOUCH HOFF, who died in 1815, noted that her father was a Rev. (believed to be an "honorary title", and not though any formal ordainment), WILLIAM MOFFETT, also of Prince William Co., VA, but who may have emigrated south from NJ, just as did the Hoff family members, such as DANIEL HOFF and MOORE HOFF. Her descendants and the HOFF line are well documented, and I have a copy of her obit. from the Marietta newspaper of April 1819. I have little luck in determining her ancestry past her father, however, and would welcome direct contact. Contact ne directly at <jshäaviationattornez.com> john scott hoff

My great-great-grandfather Thomas Moffitt, born in Randolph County, NC, in 1805, married Nancy Jane Craven, the daughter of Thompson Craven, and moved to Iowa in 1850. To my knowledge neither was a potter, although a great many others in the Craven family and at least one North Carolina Moffitt whose name I don't have handy were well-known potters in the 1800s.

Thomas and Nancy Jane are documented in Mary Esther Moffitt Ford's book on the descendants of Hugh and Hannah Davis Moffitt, although Thomas was descended from William and Mary Davis Moffitt. (Hugh and William were brothers.)

I was really pleased to come across your entry as it has filled a small piece of the BORNOR family history puzzel. There are very few of us here in the UK & all related to one another George being our great/grand father, William or Fred Bornor - all brothers of Thomas + several sisters. Although I am unable to provide any details to you regarding Ursula Moffit is there anything you can tell me about Thomas.

Initial searches using the WWW identified a branch of our family in the US - State of Michigan. My Brother David met up with one of them (Bill) while in London on business - . I have been incontact with Fred's line of the family - Son went to Canada during/after the World War 2 his sister lives in West Country of England.

Any info would be truly appreciated.

I am not related to this family, but I checked some data bases to see if I could be of help. Below is what I have found. While viewing this info, keep in mind that places of birth listed on the US census are antidotal.

Iowa Dallas County Spring Valley
1930 Census
James A. Moffit, 72, Wd, Born IL, Father b. France, mother b. KY
1920 Census
John Moffet (living with wife Katie and son Dell) 62 IL/France/KY
1910 Census
James Moffit, 53, IL/?/?
1900 Census
James Moffitt b. Oct. 1857 IL/IL/IL

1880 Census IL, Schuyler County, Rushville
Moffit, James 22 IL/KY/France
I checked several census years to find Moffits born in France and there weren't many!! So, I zeroed in on this record.

Pinkney Maybee m. Elizabeth Moffitt on the 5 June 1870 in Ripley Co, MO

1870 Missouri, Ripley Co. Johnson
Maybee, Pinkney 54
Eliza 34, KY
Moffate, James, 14, IL
MOffate, Josephine, 8, IL

January 23, 186?: Elizabeth Moffit applied for the Civil War pension benefits for John Moffit

1860's: John Moffat served in Co C 3 IL Calvary enlisting at Frederick, IL

1860 IL, Schuyler County, Fredrick
Moffit, John 27, Canada (French Canadian, maybe???)
Elizabeth 23 KY
James 3, IL

John Moffit married Elizabeth Mack 12/03/1855 in Schuyler County, Illinois

You should get some confirmation of the above if you order the pension records for John Maffit of Frederick, IL. In order to apply for the pension, Elizabeth would have submitted affidavits with birth dates of her children.

UPDATE Re: Photos of James and Samantha Moffit - California Pioneers

I have found James & Samantha Moffit on the 1860, 70 & 80
US censuses. Based on information from each census, I now do not believe the caption under the photo was correct (James and Samantha were born abt 1831 & 1839 - they would have been too young to lead an emmigrant train in 1848)

It's possible that Samantha's maiden name is Newton. (Daughter of T.J. and Fidelia Newton of Nauvoo, Illinois)

If you think you might be related to these people, please contact me. I have a really neat picture that I would love to share with their family (James and Samantha are not related to me)
