Hello-
I am a descendant of Isaac Gates (1701 Preston CT - 1788 Preston CT) and his second wife, who has been named in all references I have come across as Sarah Maffried. It is unclear when/where Sarah was born, but she died 4 Sept 1760 in Preston, CT. They probably married about 1747 since their first child was born in 1748. I have never found any Maffried family references online and it has always troubled me that my line ends with her.
I was looking around for possible alternative spellings, other families spelled like Maffried, etc., and I wanted to ask your opinion about whether Sarah's real surname was Moffitt/Maffett/Moffatt. I can see how this might be mistaken for Maffried when transcribed or read from an original source.
I did find a Sarah Moffitt, born 1726 in Killingly, which is not too far away from Preston. Her parents were John Moffit (18 Jul 1695 Newbury MA - ?) and Elizabeth Firman. Any other possibilities out there?
Best,
Matthew Bowdish
