I began my family tree search 10 years ago I have run into a "brick wall" and need some help. My ancestors, Peder and Laurentine Mogensen left Denmark in 1884. They setled in Elk Mound, WI. I found the family on the 1900 Federal Census, Elk Mound Twon, Dunn County WI. They had 15 children total, but 9 living in 1900. On the 1910 Federal Cnsus, same family, same town, 7 children still living. I have birth dates and other information. I would like to research those children to hopefully find living relatives.

Mogensen Changed to Magnusen?

I am looking for the family of Carl Magnusen. He came to the US (Iowa). When I check the Danish 1870 census, I find Carl's wife Jensine Christine Andersdatter living with her father, Anders Jensen, along with her children Mathilde Mogensen & Anders Valdemar Mogensen. My records don't show the name Mogensen but Magnusen. Is this a mistake on the census or does anyone have any info. Jensine came to the Iowa in 1872 where she came to live with her husband Carl. Carl: b. 29 Dec.,1832 d.1902 Jensine: b. 1845 d.1917. My grandmother Matilda was born in Iowa in 1873. Their name was changed to Madison when they arrived. Please help. Thanks

Hello Marsha,

I've just found this board.
Mogensen and Magnusen are basically two spellings of the same name (Mogens is the typical Danish version of the boy's given name Magnus). In several Danish dialects, they would have sounded alike when pronounced. One of my own 18th century ancestors had his name spelt both ways in the same court protocol from one session to the next.
Mogensen is the safest bet, when you examine sources, though.

with regards,
Kristoffer Mogensen

Hi Zoe, I don't know if there is a connection. I have Lars Mogensen, son of Mogens Nielsen, son of Niel Hansen...Do you see the pattern? No one had set surnames in Denmark, like we do. My family comes from Kragholm and Skrobeleve Denmark. We will just have to keep looking. Post a reply or write to me direct. Lavender@beachaccess.net
Becky
