Mohelnitzky: Anton, Julia and Mary and their parents

In a reference to Anton Mohelnitzky's two sisters, in a May 2, 1953 letter written by Frances Mohelnitzky Kussmann, she wrote, "Both sisters have died since - Julia Klein & Mary Schmidt."

I'm wondering if there may be old letters or postcards written to the Anton Mohelnitzky and Mary Ruskauff family from Anton's sisters, Julia and Mary. The letters would have addresses on them and other interesting facts, and the address could be traced by looking at old city directories, to see who lived there.

Another clue is a little vague, that Mary Mohelnitzky Schmidt's descendants lived at 52nd and Layton in Milwaukee. According to a current map, 52nd Street is no longer there (it's a park), and I don't know how I could find out what the address would be at the house on the corner (sometime before 1965). If I knew the address, I could look in a city directory for the name of the resident.

I searched and searched for Mary Mohelnitzky Schmidt's marriage record and so far found nothing. No Mohelnitzky is listed in the pre-1907 records, but lots of Schmidt/Schmitt names. And we don't even know if Mary was adopted after living in the orphanage, and maybe took another last name. If we are lucky, Mary's marriage record may list the birth town in Bohemia for her father and mother. (Julia's marriage record did not list the town).

I haven't found out what orphanage Julia and Mary were placed in. I'm thinking it may have been St. Rose Orphan Asylum in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Their brother, Anton, lived at St. Aemilian Orphan Asylum in St. Francis (now Milwaukee) from March 1858 to May 1, 1859.

And what really happened to Anton, Julia and Mary's parents? There is no record of death for them that I've found. Did they really come to the USA, or both die on the ship to America? Did the mother remarry? I haven't found a record for that either, not in Wisconsin anyway. And I have not found the family listed on a ship list; I think they may have immigrated about 1854.

Anton Mohelnitzky - possible birth place

Seltschan - Could this be Anton's birth place?

The name of the town where Vincent's brother Antonin Mohelnitzky lived in 1825 was Sedlicanech (Sedlcany).
The German spelling and Bohemian pronunciation for the town "Sedlcany" is "Seltschan" and would be pronounced, in a Bohemian dialect, as "Sel-tsch'n." A person hearing this dialect, may think the spelling would be "Sellgan" or "Zellgan."

Mohelnitzky marriage records: Klein / Ottow

A marriage record dated March 2, 1898 was found for "Katie R. Klein" and "H. W. Ottow" - this is "Kitty Klein" who is the daughter of Julia Mohelnitzky Klein.

Julia Mohelnitzky married Anton Klein on Feb. 25, 1873 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Milwaukee, Milwaukee County, Wisconsin. Julia Mohelnitzky Klein is a sister of Anton Mohelnitzky (born 1848, died 1893).

Anton Mohelnitzky married Mary Ruskauff on Feb. 6, 1872 at St. Anthony Catholic Church, Germantown, Richland County, Wisconsin.

Census records for 1900, 1910 and 1930 show "Catherine" Ottow, "Kathryn" Ottow, and "Catharine" Ottow. Her husband is listed as Henry W. Ottow. By 1930, Katie is widowed.

Mohelnitzky - Anton and his sisters Julia and Mary

Julia Mohelnitzky Klein and Anton Klein were married on Feb. 25, 1873 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. See Wisconsin Marriages, pre-1907, volume 13, page 0254.

Unfortunately, Julia is listed as "Julie Muchanetschki" in the Ancestry.com search results because that is the spelling of her name on the marriage certificate. Her last name is actually "Mohelnitzky."

Julia's parents are listed as Andreas Muchanetschki and Maria Muchanetschki. Obviously, "Muchanetschki" is incorrect and should be "Mohelnitzky" according to other documents for this family.

Julia and Anton Klein had two children: George Klein and Katy Klein. George was married to Ida M. Meunier on July 5, 1902 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. See Wisconsin Marriages, pre-1907, volume 34, page 0026. Julia Mohelnitzky is listed as the mother of George J. Klein.

Julia's brother, Anton Mohelnitzky, was a resident of St. Aemilian's Orphan Asylum located in St. Francis, Wisconsin. He was admitted there in 1858 (he was born in 1848). The orphanage has a file card with his name, birth year and admission date listed, but no other detailed records.

If anyone has found Mary Mohelnitzky's marriage or death certificate, let me know. It's possible she was married to a Mr. Schmidt or Schmitz.

Anton Mohelnitzky - 1858 - St. Aemilian's Orphanage

The date of Anton's immigration from Bohemia to America is not known at this time.

In March of 1858 Anton was placed in St. Aemilian's Orphan Asylum located in St. Francis (near Milwaukee), Wisconsin. This was a boys orphanage and was established in 1850.

Girls were placed at St. Rose Orphan Asylum which was founded in 1848. Anton's 2 sisters (Julia and Mary Mohelnitzky) may have been placed in St. Rose.
