Mohons at Camp Douglas, Chicago, during the Civil War

I have found two Mohon cousins who were imprisoned at Camp Douglas, Chicago, Illinois, during the Civil War. Both were Confederate soldiers: Thomas Nathan Mohon (my great-great grandmother's brother, a son of Alexander Thomas Mohon) and John Columbus Mohon (their cousin, a son of James Mohon).

There are two books about Camp Douglas, neither of which mentions the Mohons. But the background information on the camp and conditions is both fascinating and troubling. (Some writers compare Camp Douglas to Andersonville.) It's a wonder that anyone survived, and both of these men did--even after many months there. I wonder if they were able to be together at the camp and also if they walked/traveled home together in June of 1865. If anyone has any further information on their time at the camp or their trips home, I would love to hear about it.

First book: Pucci, Kelly. Camp Douglas; Chicago's Civil War Prison. (Images of America Series). Charleston, S. C.: Arcadia Publishing, 2007. ISBN 13 978-0-7385-5175-3; ISBN 10 0-7385-5175-9. This has lots of pictures with comments.

Second book: Levy, George. To Die in Chicago; Confederate Prisoners at Camp Douglas 1862-65. Gretna, Louisiana: Pelican Publishing, 1999. ISBN 1-56554-331-9. I'm still reading this. It's a more thorough and scholarly approach.

Another source: One of the Confederate veterans groups holds an annual ceremony honoring the dead from Camp Douglas. http://www.camp-douglas-1507.org/

I have researched the Alexander Mohon line since the 1960s and I have never been able to document George Washington as a child of Alex and Matilda. I am no expert on the subject, however. My husband descends from William W. and Nancy Susan Parris through Robt. E. Lee Mohon and Emma Wilson.
I have also tried to find documentation to establish Wiley Mohon b. 1777 as Alexander's father. Some of the Stephenville, Texas Mohons seem certain that this is true but I just have never been able to prove it. I would love to hear from anyone who can shed any light on these puzzles.

A. 1857-
Name variations: Parker Aaron or Park Alexander

According to my fourth cousin, George Washington Mohon was born in 1852, and his grandson is still living in Arkansas. He was married three times: Peggy James, Martha Cash, and Mattie Leverett. Since he doesn't show up in any of the census documents, I'm going to keep looking for documentation.

Are you in touch with any of the Stephenville and De Leon, Texas, Mohons?

I am descended from Alexander Mohon through his daughter Sarah A. Elizabeth, who married John P. Moon. I have a good amount of documented information for her family and for many of her siblings and their families.

Do you have a George Washington Mohon listed as one of Alexander's children? I can't find him in any of the census documents, but a fourth cousin says he was definitely one of the sibs.
Thanks so much for the information. The only clues I had were a census record listing William Cicero and his parents being born in GA. Also in an old trunk where we got information we had there was a picture postcard of a man with a long dark beard and a woman. The inscription says Bess or Bliss and Dutch. The man has a peg leg. Is this the same Dutch? If so would you like a copy of this picture I can scan it in and send it. My email address is jdcase@bellsouth.net. Just email me and let me know.

I am searching for any information regarding my Great Great Grandfather William Cicero Mohon b. 5-30-1854. From various letters, and other information recently discovered, I have learned that William Cicero had a sister named Molly who married a Rhoades and then moved to Oregon. He also had a brother who was nicknamed Dutch.
William Cicero married Mary Sabrina Wells b. 10-15-1858. They married 3-27-1877. Their children were William Wiley b. 12-5-1877, Johnny Nepoleon b. 9-18-1880, IB 9-4-1882, George C. b. 8-27-1884 nicknamed Poe (he drowned in the Red River at age 21, Effie Samantha b. 3-5-1888 (she married a Thomas), Alice Maude b. 6-12-1890 (my great grandmother), WT b. 4-12-1903. There was another daughter named Josie no more information available other than she married a Bondorant (not sure on spelling).
In 1897 the family packed up a wagon and left from Centre, Alabama arriving 27 days later outside of Laurel, Mississippi during Christmas week. They then worked their way down to the area known as Tilton in Lawrence County Mississippi.

I re-read my post too late. My niece was 10 feet from the bomber, not 19 feet. If you type "Amanda Mohon" in your web browser, the story will pop up. She was in Mosul, Iraq last January. Some guy took a picture of her two weeks after she was burned and posted it on a site on the Internet. I found it by chance, and copied it so Amanda could have it for her scrapbook. Abby also made the news. Type in "Abby Mohon" and the story of her drowning will pop up. Our family has had some real loss in the last few years. My father died in 2002, but when you lose a young teen, it's totally different and harder to accept. Anyway, I hope these two messages get to your address. Anne

I am sorry that I just found this message from you. Didn't check the date, but I haven't been online for a long time. There was a Wylie Mohon related, but they went to Texas. There's a lady that I have corresponded with, and she did the whole tree on your side. I think her address is Kayke@aol.com. It's been along time since I have recieved an email from her. She had a Willis D. too. That sounds like who you want to talk to. Maybe I wrote you this a long time ago. Just can't remember. We had a death in our family in july. My brother, John Wade Mohon, lost his daughter, Abby Elizabeth Mohon, age 14. Abby was tubing on the river here, and got her foot stuck in a submerged tree. Her friends tried to save her, but she drowned. John's other daughter, Amanda, was burned when a suicide bomber in Iraq, detonated a bomb in a mess tent. Amanda was 19 feet away, and was lucky she wasn't killed. I sell on Ebay and buy, and use the name blondiemo. Ebay gives you an option to list info about yourself . To access that info, you have to search for seller "blondiemo", then when my name pops up, there will be a red icon next to my name, after the number of feedbacks I've received. It says "About Me" or "Me". If you click on that, you see my info, and a link to my niece, Amanda's site, where she posted lots of photos of Abby and herself. Click on the photo of Amanda too, and you'll see lots of photos of her, and Abby too. This branch of Mohons are big people! Both of my brothers are over 6', and Abby was 5'10" at age 14. We sure miss her.

I have a lot of information about 25 generations of Greshams but very little on the Mohon line, and would like to exchange information with you.
Hello again Ann, I stayed up all night trying to figure this out, and I finally got my greatgrandfathers parents names. Jessie's father was Whyle Mohon (at least I think thats how the first name is spelled) and mother was Mary Mohon. Then I am led to believe that Whyle's father was a William Mohon ( born abt.1852, and as best I can tell, Williams wifes name was also Mary. The info I have as far as these people are found in the Lawrence County, MS. 1910-1930 Census'. That is all I have been able to locate to this point. If this is or could be your family, that would be awsome.

Amy Mohon

Hi,
No, I have never heard that name mentioned. Some of the family names are Anderson, Bradley, Bridges and (HUNT, through marriage)
If you type
Mohon Strong Mississippi
into your browser (I use Google), you will see a James Hood Manuscript. This is the family I am from. James Hood's widow (nancy Bradley) married Nathaniel Mohon, my ggg-grandfather. Hope this helps. Martin is my married name, and Mohon is my maiden name

Hi Penny,
I received a message from someone else today concerning the Bridges/Mohon side of the family. To refresh my memory, I reread the Mohon messages. Have you ever been able to substantiate what you were told, about Nathan running away and changing his name from Mahon to Mohon? Also, do you still publish the newsletter? If so, please add me to the subscription list. My lineage is through Nathaniel, AJ, Bit Wade, Walter Wade Sr., then Walter Wade Mohon Jr (my father). My father "Walt" passed away February 8, 2002.

Mohon-Talkington Wedding at Prosper (newspaper clipping 10/21/1926)

From the Alla Clary Scrapbook. I don't know which newspaper this is from, however is dated October 21, 1926. If I had to take a guess, I would say it might be from The Examiner, McKinney, Texas

MOHON-TALKINGTON WEDDING AT PROSPER

The marriage of William Booker Mohon and Miss Lola Callye Talkington, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. H.M. Talkington, took place at 4 o'clock Saturday afternoon, October 16th, at the home of the bride's parents. There ceremony was performed by Rev. R. B. Evans, pastor of the Presbyterian church of Prosper. Mr. and Mrs. Mohon left immediately after the ceremony for a short visit in Dallas after which they will be at home at Prosper.
The bridegroom is a son of the late Peter R. Mohon. He is one of the most highly respected men of our community. His honest, upright dealings in business affairs, and his consideration of his fellowman has won him the respect and seteem of all who know him. He owns a beautiful farm home and stock ranch just west of Prosper.
The bride is loved for her sweet, christian disposition. she is very unselfish, and a tireless worker in the church. At present she has charge of the young people's work. For two years she resided with her parents in Waxahachie where she attended Trinity University and at the same time availed herself of the opportunity the church offered for training workers until now she has remained almost constantly with her parents, caring for them in their older-days. And because of her father's ill health, Mr. and Mrs. Mohon will make their home with the bride's parents.
The living room was decorated for the occasion with princess feathers and zinias. The fireplace was an embankment of flowers before which the ring ceremony was performed.
The bride was gowned in toast brown georgettee with satin slippers and velour hat in dark brown. She carried as arm bouquet of pink and white rosebuds.
Only the immediate family was present at the ceremony.
The groom's gift to his bride was a beautiful car.

Karen, if you will send me your e-mail address, I'll give you information on where to get the book. I don't feel that I should post the author's info on this site. The last I heard from him, he has books left @ $38.00 each. I also have lots of additional info since the book was written, but don't know if it would be the same family as your ancestors.
My e-mail: djwarford@aol.com

Hi Amy,
I believe there is a Jesse Mohon in my Grandfathers family. He is a decendant of Wiley Mohon and James Alexander Mohon. We have recently moved and I am not finding that info at the moment, but will keep you informed when I do.
good Luck judy

I would love to have the info on Dennis. There is a great possibility that Dennis is Wiley's Brother.. In that case all your info would relate to our side of the family. I presume you are talking about Dennis' ancestors. My email is judy65@ev1.net. You may have solved a great mystery. Thanks. judy

Hi Again,
I just found another Jessie Mohon with no birthdate. His father is Anderson Mohon b. 1869, married Ida Horton. His father is James A.( 1841 - 1938) and mother Mary Susan Caddell ( 1846-1923). These are the Texas Mohons. Hope it helps. Judy
