We've learned a bit more about this family since Jan posted her original message back in 2002.

For instance, we know that Petrena, Anton, Alfred, and Mildred were, indeed, siblings. Their parents were Ole Johannesson Molstad and Marthe Pedersdatter Breitehaug, who emigrated from Ringsaker, Hedmark, Norway, to La Crosse County, Wisconsin, in 1855.

Hope you are still monitoring your blog. I have a pocket watch that my dad's uncle gave to him. His name was John A. Berg and he was married to Matilda Molstad or Aunt Tilly by my family. The only other thing a know so far, is they only had one child, a daughter and she was adopted. Hope this helps you in your search.

I am looking for any information on the descendents of Melvin Johnson and Mable Molstad. They only infromation on them so far is that their daughter Adelaide married a man name Leon Doucet. Any information on their children would be helpful. Melvin Johnson was my great grandfather's cousin.

I have information about an Alfred Molstad, born in La Crosse County, Wisconsin, about 1870. His mother's obituary from 1910 says he lived in Canada at that time.

I wonder if we have a connection.

Hi Ada. I've been working a little bit on the Molstad family, and here is an update. I've attached it as a gedcom.

I have found more information about Petrina's parents, Ole Johannsen Molstad and Marthe Breitahaug, but I don't know about their children. She supposedly had 14, and I only know of Petrina and Anton. I can't find their 1880 census record.

Check out the gedcom, and let me know if you can fill in any holes.

WI 5th Inf Re-organized Co G. Residence: Christiania, Vernon County, Wisconsin. Born in Toten, Norway. Civil War: Farmer. Age 19. Blue eyes, sandy hair, sandy complexion, 5’8”. Enlisted for one year on 13 Sep 1864 at La Crosse, Wisconsin. Mustered there the same day. Private. Mustered out 20 Jun 1865. Sources: (WHS red book vol 10b p278) (Ulvestad p310)

Does anyone know subsequent history of this fellow? Did he marry? Have children? If so, who were they?

I am looking for ancestors of a Smith Molstad, born in Wisconsin in 1867 and therefore about the right age and in roughly the right place to be Anton's son. It's a long shot, I know, but I thought I'd ask.

Smith and his wife Dorthea (b. 1870 in Norway) lived in Pleasant Township, Winneshiek County, Iowa, in 1910. By 1920, they had moved to Trempealeau or Jackson County, Wisconsin.

They had several children, including Emma (1895-1966), Melvin (1895-1931), Selmer E. (1896-1952), Gertrude (1899-1938), and Lulla (1899-1915).

Smith died in 1924. Dorthea died in 1937. They are buried in Pine Cliff Cemetery, Galesville, Wisconsin.

Is there any connection here to Selmar (also known as "Sam") Molstad of Galesville, Wisconsin?

Selmar married Gertrude DeYoung sometime before 1919 and he died sometime after 1940 (probably). They had at least four children: Lorene, Tilman, Gertrude, and John (not necessarily in that order).

Hi Jan. I'm working on this family right now too. I don't have much, but I found a few census and cemetery records. Petrine's parents lived in Holland, La Crosse, Wisconsin. Her mother Martha had 10 surviving children, so it's a big family.

Martha and Ole Molstad are buried in Long Coulee cemetery in Onalaska Twp, La Crosse county. I'm going to send for Martha's obit.

I'll email you a few census images. Maybe we can nail down all the grandchildren...

I have a family of Molstad's who moved to Sprague Man.
Alfred Molstad and Mina Vettleson-
They had 6 children - 5 boys, 1 girl. The girl's name was Ella.
The Boy's - Frank, Melvin, Albert,Ben, Vern

Wisconsin Molstad

My husband's grandfather was George Molstad and his great grandfather was Emil C. Molstad. I know that were from Wisconsin. I have them placed in Rio, WI in 1932. Emil's wife, Ella Ruth Olson, was from Trempealeau County (I think). I would be interested to find out if there is a connection.

I think I have just found a connection between my stepfather Melvin Molstad and an Anton Molstad who was born in Toten Norway who I think might be Melvin's grandfather but I am not quite sure. Melvin's father Alfred was born in La Crosse Wi.. They moved to Northern Minn and then to Sprague, Manitoba, Canada. Melvin was born in Shevlin Minn.. Could they be connected with your family? I have sent a request for a look up on Alfred's birth. Pauline

My stepfather Melvin Molstad's father was Alfred Molstad who married Minnie Vettleson in La Cross Wisconsin. Was his father Anton? I have come across a write up on an Anton T. Molstad a farmer from Christiana, Vernon County, Wisconsin who joined the Wi. 5th infantry in 1864 at the age of 19. He left the army in 1865. I figure that Alfred was born in 1868 as his age is given as 32 when Melvin was born in Shevlin Minn. in 1900. Anton could have married after his discharge and fathered Alfred. I have a connection to John Selmer JOHNSON who married Alma MOLSTAD and Melvin Clarence JOHNSON who married Mable MOLSTAD. These two couples moved from Minnesota to Canada. John and Melvin are my Half Great Uncles.

I am hoping to connect with Noella (Johnson) Hart who posted information about her JOHNSON / MOLSTAD family(her e-mail address posted on this board is no longer active). Anyone else out there working on these families?

Hi Barb, Long time no see. I ran into Joyce on Sunday at a pancake breakfast. If I try to type a long message I get cut off and have to start again and that sure is a pain.
I don't know all the details about the family that is for sure. I would like to find out where in Norway they came from and when the family came over. If you and Allen could put your info. down on paper and send it to me by regular mail I could put down what I know and then take it over to Joyces so she could fill in what she has. Maybe by then we could have a pretty good Molstad family tree.
What about Ella's family? Could they help? Talk to yoou again

Hi I know Allen Molstad and his sister Joyce. Melvin also had a brother Elmer who had one son. Can't remember the son's name. Vernon died in Selkirk Hospital as far as I know. There also was a sister or a niece named Hilda. Her son Henry was killed cleaning out a tank car on the railway.

Nope...Melvin Johnson was from Clarkfield, married to Alma Molstad, had one daugter..Adelaide....lived near Domremy, Saskatchewan, Canada.

I don't think so. Alfred came up from Minnesota, I believe straight to Domremy Sask. He was a lawyer, and I think was educated in a 'university' in Minneapolis. His wife, my aunt,was Millie,don't know her maiden name, was from California,my dad thinks. They had no children. Uncle Alfred
founded the North Star lumber Co. which operated in the Prince Albert area.

I am looking for any information about George, Anton or Nels Molstad. My name is Nathan Molstad born in St. Paul MN 1966, my father Stan Molstad was born in Jackson MN and grew up in Dawson MN, his father was Elder Molstad born in Madison MN, his father was George Molstad I think born in Lac Qui Parle MN, his father was Anton Molstad who came to America with his father Nels Molstad from Norway in the 1860's at the age of 6 years old.
