Dear Harm Moman,

I just saw your message, but it's a long time ago that you post it. I think we are family/relatives, cause your mother is the sister of my grandmother. My grandmother is Janny (Jannetje) Berkhuizen, she was married with Arnoldus van de Bovenkamp. They got three children; Henk, Dick and Cees. My father is your nephew, Cees van de Bovenkamp.

I am looking for family in australia, cause i'm just curious. I hope you will get this message.

Greets,
Ayla van de Bovenkamp
From Holland

There was a JOHN B. MOMAN (not "M." as I think I peviously posted) who was living in an early census in Kentucky, but at the present time, I don't remember the county. There also was a WILLIAM MOMAN living nearby.It is Dutch in origin.

I am very curious about the surname "Moman". I descend from early pioneer stock who took the Wilderness Road from Virginia into Kentucky, then my ancestors were settled in Southern Indiana by 1835. I have searched every line on my paternal side, and cannot find the name. However, my dad's great-great grandparents put "Moman" in as the middle name for one of their younger sons, who was born in 1830 while they were still in Kentucky. The name is written out in full on his tombstone,JOHN MOMAN FIELDS, with no doubt with the spelling. I have seen an early census in Kentucky (not the county where my ancestors lived) with the names of JOHN M. MOMAN, and living closeby, WILLIAM MOMAN. Other than that, I know nothing. I have searched libraries where I found it is Dutch in origin. Just one paternal line of mine could have "Moman" in the background as I can't go back any further than 1771.

Seek further information about Bird MOMAN [variant spelling: MOMAN, MOORMAN, MORMAN, MOERMAND], born 1810 Georgia, died between 1850-1860, probably Pike County, Georgia; he married Rebecca HUCKABY [variant spelling: HUCKABY, HUCKEBY], in 1839, [see 223, Pike County, Georgia, daughter of David HUCKEBY];

Bird MOMAN and Rebecca HUCKABY are believed to be the parents of William Pinckney 'Pink' MOMAN, born 1854...

On June 1, 1840, Bird MOMAN was married less than one year, and was living in Georgia Militia District 545, Pike County, Georgia; his household included his wife: 0000100000000 0000100000000. 1840 US Federal Census Report, Pike County, Georgia, Page 5.

In 1839, Pleasant T. MOORMAN [MOMAN] married Phoebe Laprad, in Pike County, Georgia. On June 1, 1840, the household of Pleasant T. MOMAN was enumerated with 9 family members present: including: 1111100000000 0111010000000. It would appear this Pleasant T. MOMAN was born between 1809-1819 and the adult female in the household was between 30-40 years born between 1799-1809.....and the remainder of the household must have been his siblings as he had been married less than one year. 1840 US Federal Census Report, Pike County, Georgia, Page 7.

In 1837, Daniel M. MOORMAN [MOMAN] married Nancy LAIRD, [see 1837, 135, Pike County, Georgia];

In 1839, Isaac MOORMAN [MOMAN] married Martha LANIER [ see 1839, 223, Pike County, Georgia];

In 1845, Emily MORMAN [MORAN} maried Green L. KIERBOW [ see 1845, 159, Pike County, Georgia];

The relationship between Daniel M. MOORMAN [MOMAN], Isaac MOORMAN [MOMAN], Pleasant T. MOORMAN [MOMAN], Emily MORMAN [MORAN, MOMAN?] and Bird MOORMAN [MOMAN], if any, is unclear....

See further information about the relationship between Daniel M., Isaac, Pleasant T., Emily, and Bird MOORMAN [MOMAN], if any.....

Seek further information about the siblings and families of William Pinckney 'Pink' MOMAN, including Julia A.

Rick:

I know I am responding to an old post, but hope it gets to you.

I have been looking at these Momans a good bit for the last several days. Henry Reese's father was (as indicated in the other response to your message) the son of Landrum Moman. Landrum's parents were Bird Moorman (yes, that's the spelling on the marriage record) and Rebecca Huckaby. Bird and Rebecca married September 15, 1839 in Pike County, Georgia. Find them on them on the 1840 Pike County, GA census and the 1850 Coweta County, GA census. Then find Becky on the 1860 Spalding County, GA census - with a son Leander age 9. This boy is your Landrum. Then find in the King David Huckaby household on the 1870 Pike County, GA census, Sandy Momon, age 18 -- the census taker's L and S letters are similar and probably he meant to write Landy or some derivative of Landrum. Landrum M. Moman married Mary Adaline Porter October 7, 1875 in Pike County, GA.

My interest in this line is the Huckabys. Rebecca and King David Huckaby were children of David Huckaby and Elizabeth Furlow.

I have some more info on these Huckabys if you like....

Ken Johnson

John Moman - 1850 Georgia or Alabama

I found a record in Tallapoosa County, Alabama (Deeds F-619) in which a Thomas and Rebecca JOHNSTON assign a Jessie HAYNIE to represent their interests in the estate of a John MOMAN on 10 Jun 1851.

1850 Federal Census records and Tallapoosa County marriage records indicate that Jessie HAYNIE is their brother-in-law (wife's name is Jane) and that, probably, their mother is named Elizabeth JOHNSTON. All were born in Georgia.

Does anyone have any information about this John MOMAN? I would guess that he could be the father of this Elizabeth JOHNSTON, b.1805.

My name is William Moman. Born in Chicago, IL. I now reside in Florida. My father was Douglas Moman. He grew up in Alabama area. There are many Moman's in the Alabama / Louisana area. Many have traveled to Illinois, Minnesota, & Missouri areas to live. There are very few in my area. I am estranged from even my relatives. I have 3 half brothers, an aunt, and many neices and nephews I have never seen. My Uncle Jesse Moman died in 2007 and he told me the name originated between the Indians, French, & africans. If you want to know more email me.

Mollie Momon born 1872 (Mullato)

I'm trying to get more information on Mollie Momon who was biracial, she's my great grandmother. She lived in Arkansas and I'm told she is also Cherokee. Her photo certainly looks like she either White or Indian. There is also another Mollie Momon from North Carolina who lived with Mr. Quigel - but the age different has me puzzled. Because I can't seem to find my grandmother's parents. Checking the Indian indexes may be next but I don't have a surname she married into the Momon family. Someone told me she had to families (one white and one afro American), who knows. If anyone can clear this up for me please advise. debbbiedesilva@yahoo.com

Hello, My grandfather was George Moman who was born approximately 1890. He married Freda Smith and they had four children, Georgia Hubertine, Earnestine, Ollivebelle, and George,Jr. They lived in Kansas. Hubertine was my mother. At this time,I don't know my great grandfather's name, but he was born a slave in a place called Boysville (not sure of the spelling), Kentucky.

There was a Paul G Moman living with my grandparents during the 1920 census. He was 16 years old at that time. He was my grandfather's nephew. I don't have any other info on him at this time other than that he was born in Kentucky.

I am just getting started researching my ancestry. I was surprised to find so many Momans, and, as you said caucasians and African Americans, and so many variations of the spelling of the name. Any information you can provide will be greatly appreciated.

I live in Maryland, but was born and raised in California. Thanks for your reponse. I look forward to hearing from you again soon.

I am the granddaughter of George Moman, Sr. I have only just started my search for information on the Moman family. At this point, all I know is that my grandfather was born around 1890 somewhere in Kentucky. He married Freda Ferrell Smith, they moved to Kansas where they had four children. Georgia, Ernestine, Ollie Belle and George, Jr. I have read all of the messages currently on the message board relating to the Momans and it seems that there may be some connection there. I would appreciate hearing from anyone who has some information

The name Moman is derived from "Moorman." The spelling was changed around the time that my grandfather and father signed up for social security in the late 1930's and early 1940's. My father's name was Herman Richard Moman and his father was James Louis Moman. My father had six brothers (horace, frank, john, james, carl, lee) and three sisters, Mayme and Katie and ?

I have found a lot of John Moman's, but not my "Grandfather". I have no clue as to who his parents are. All I know is that he was married to my Grandmother Orpha Marley. They had two sons, Burlin Eugene and my father Walter Ray Moman. The children were born in Brownwood, Mo., Stoddard Co. The only information on his birth cert. just list the parents names and nothing else, death cert. are the same. My Great Aunt Grace told me that she thought he might have been murdered, shortly after my father was born. She took the baby to him for him to see,and after a short time he was never heard of again. My Grandmother was heart broken, waiting for him to return to claim his family. Does anyone relate to this John B. Moman?

David and brother Joseph Moman

looking for any info what so ever on a David Moman and his brother Joseph Moman.

Somehow these names fit in the family tree. My sister in law found a paper in her mothers purse that said :

Joseph Moman younger brother of my great grandfather David Moman. It also went on to say: My great grandmother was Elizabeth Cannon and she was an Indian Princess. Then under that it said Margaret Cannon.

Somehow this connects to the Ford surname as the maiden name of my mother in law was Ford.

there were no more details pertaining to the Moman name in her paper. We knew she was working on the tree and she said she would tell us when she found out more. BUT we cannot find her research.

So if anyone can find a David and Joseph Moman pre 1900 could you please share? It could be anywhere from 1800 on. The Ford part of the family lived in Alabama. I have no other info, as we had never even heard the name Moman before.

Thanks from the family,

Betty Edmonds,
Lakemont GA

She did die a few years ago but I know they had three children together who are in their 40's. I will check with my dad more info for you.

Did any of the "sisters" marry someone last named HAYES? I am starting to wonder if there is a possible connection here...my great grandfather was John Momen Hayes (not sure of the middle name spelling...could it really be MOMAN). He was born in Alabama in 1860...could his mother be a Moman???

Has anyone checked on brothers and sisters and aunts and uncles at all?? I feel that somewhere I heard that he was born in Jefferson county...I'm going to check this out...

Thanks for any help.

...a little off track here, but my great grandfather was John Momen Hayes (or at least I was TOLD the spellling was Momen)...I am wondering if perhaps Momen would have been HIS mother's maiden name...didn't they used to do that sort of thing? Momen seems strange for a middle name unless it was a last name. He was born in Alabama in 1860 and married Sarah Isabelle "Belle" Story.

I am, of course, trying to find out John Momen Hayes' parents info.

Anyone notice anything familiar about my information??
