Caroline Monte` & John Hoffman in Louisiana

Now this is interesting!! I have always been told the Monte` was a French name. So far I see messages for Italian families--neat. Anyway I am searching for Caroline Monte`'s parents / family in Louisiana. Caroline's siblings are Paul; Mattie; Josephine. I believe there are some Monte`'s in New Iberia Parish Cenuse, (Year?) but I lost my notes. Caroline married John Hoffman is St. Martinville, St.Martin Parish LA. I think they were both Catholic. Neither could speak English. He spoke German and she spoke French. I guess it worked out because they had seven children! The Hoffmans own and operated a steam Laundry House in Crowley, Acadia Parish, LA and moved it to Opelouses, St. Landry Parish,LA about 1929. John and Caroline's children: Peter J. Hoffmann (note the different surname spelling), b. 14 Sept. 1867, d. 27 Nov. 1946 in Opelouses; Mary Frances (May), single, b. 6 Nov. 1876, d. 19 Feb. 1946 in Opelouses; Jake Hoffman; John William (Will), buried in Breaux Bridge, LA; Henry Hoffman; Rosalie Elizabeth, b. 15 Nov. 1874 in Lake Charles, LA, d. 15 June 1960 in Opelouses, m. 19 Oct. 1896 to John Wesley PACKARD in LA; Anna Ophelia (Annie), single, b. 21 Oct. 1882, d. 24 Feb.1957 in Opelouses Louisiana. The family was very active in St. Landry Catholic Church in Opelouses.

Giuseppina Monte & Ignazio DeGrotto

My gradmother was Josephine DeGrotto ( Giuseppina Monte ) who married my grandfather John DeGrotto ( Ignazio DeGrotto ). The marriage was an arranged marriage. My grandmother was anywhere from 14 - 16 years old at the time of the marriage. My grandfather was born near Palermo, Sicily in Belmonte Mezzano. My grandmother was also born near Palermo in San Giuseppa Ati. She came to the US through Ellis Island with her parents, sister and aunt and uncle, I believe. The sister returned to Palermo after being in the states for a few years. Some copies of Italian records indicate that the name may have actually been spelled Dragata or a similar variation. When I was young we used to make trips to South Philly to see relatives as we lived in Salem, NJ at the time. There is also a connection thru marriage with the LaSpada family. A friend, a member of the Venuto family is memtioned in the one or two letters I have seen written during the time after my grandmom and grandpop were married. My mother was born in Philadelphia and named Gaetana, now Ida. I am still searching for more info. I am told there were family photos of my great-grandparents as well. Longevity ran in my grandfather's family as his parents were believed to have lived into their 100's.

Actually the name Degrotto is incorrect. The name was changed by Steve the oldest son from Dragotto; don't know the story but that's what I was always told. You will not find any surnames in Sicily that match Degrotto; however, Dragotto is fairly prevalent. And yes, my younger brother is named after my mom's older brother, Russell who died during WWII. The Monti's came from San Guiseppa Jato , Jato because of its proximity to Mt Jato and to distinguish it from San Guiseppa Vesuvius. You should contact me. Your mother is my cousin and your grandfather was my Uncle Joe; his father came from Belmonte Mazzango, Palermo, Sicily.

Jennie Monte is probably named for my grandfather's maternal aunt Jennie Morello(nee Monte).

Jennie Morello was the younger sister of my great-grandmother Giuseppina DeGrotto(nee Monte). She was also the wife of Anthony Morello. I don't know if Aunt Jennie and Uncle Tony had any children though. However, I do know that Aunt Jennie died in 1966 and that she was the only one who was born in the United States. She had 3 other sisters, Maria Regalbuto(nee Monte), Carmela, and Teresa(she was taken in by Aunt Jennie's mother for an unknown reason). She also had one older brother, Calogero Monte, who remained in Philadelphia up for until the day he died. There is a living relative named Calogero Monte, but I don't know if he's a son or grandson, for all I know he still lives in Phildelphia on Durfor Street.

Aunt Jennie's parents were Anna Licata and Salvatore Monte and I believe she was born not too long after her mother, sisters and brother emigrated from San Giuseppe Tato, Sicily(which is where her 5 older siblings were born, in addition to her mom and dad). Her father had emigrated from Sicily first and settled in South Phildelphia, not too long after was when her mother and siblings came over.

By the way, my late grandfather was Joseph DeGrotto, he was the son of Aunt Jennie's older sister Giuseppina and her husband, Ignazio DeGrotto. My grandfather's older brother, Russell Salvatore DeGrotto, fought in World War II and died as a result of Pneumonia while recovering in a Veteran's Hospital in 1946. His sister, Ida(whose real name was Gaetana, from what I've been told), had a son who was named after her brother in 1949. Uncle Russell was friends with Jack LaSpada, who also fought in World War II. Uncle Jack ended up marrying Uncle Russell's younger sister Anna Marie DeGrotto the same year Aunt Ida's son was born 1949. Uncle Jack died October 27, 2002 and Aunt Anna died Nov. 8, 1994.

My grandfather was born in Hancock's Bridge, Salem Co., New Jersey. He had one younger sister who was named Grace, but she died not too long after she was born and one younger brother Salvatore DeGrotto was born in 1940. My grandfather's four older siblings Stephen, Josie(Josephine), Russell, Anna, and Ida were all born in Pennsylvania. They probably moved to Hancock's Bridge around the time Ida was probably still a baby up for until the time Grandmom DeGrotto was pregnant with my grandfather. They later on moved to Salem, New Jersey, where they would all live for the rest of their lives. Stephen was the only one who moved to the Penns Grove/Carney's Point area. The rest lived either in Salem City or outside of Salem City(Aunt Ida eventually moved to the surrounding suburban area).

Aunt Mary married a man whom I only know of by his last name, Regalbuto. One son she had, Sammy Regalbuto, was in World War II and was killed in combat. She and her husband had lived in Philadelphia, but I don't know of any other children she had except for Sam.

Some other Philadelphia relatives include Lena Boschetti, Ida Pappalardo, Olivia Romoncella.

Speaking to an Author/Expert on Hispanic Genealogy the Spanish origin of the name MONTE hails from Northern Spain where there are about 8 villages with the name MONTE. He was sure my family line would be from one of the eight...only way to be sure or to discover, is to go to them and speak with the villagers.
My Great Grandfather was Felice Monte who married Sebastiana Marrero (half Mexican, half Native American Indian); at the time of their marriage, they lived in Mayaquez,Puerto Rico. They had 3 Sons: Juan Eraquio Monte (my Grandfather, Pedro Monte and Dionisio Monte.
My Grandfather John Eraquio Monte departed Mayaguez in 1900 and went to the Hawaiian Islands - he was a 'Luna' at the Makiki Agricultural Experiment Station. In 1914 - he opened The Monte Dairy, in Makiki area. He married Annie Mo'ohihio Lahaina, from Moalua, Kau District, Big Island, Hawaii. They had 3 Sons - John Jr. (my Father), Peter Monte and Henry Dionisio Monte.
Anyone with research on Monte family from Northern Spain; or Monte family from Mayaquez, Puerto Rico - please contact me.

Dear "Leonetti" or is it Mrs. MONTET,

thanks for the quick reply, sounds most interesting. Anyway, although you might actually provide a link to my anciestors, I do have my slight doubts. since my folks ( Humbert MONTET mentioned around 1665 at Lutry/Lausanne, Switzerland and his son Francois MONTET, born around 1689 at Lutry, MONTET) both were gardeners - and not some warriors. However, I am deeply interested in hearing from your MONTET pedigree. In return, I certainly could tell you more about my folks from 1665 onwards, after they made it from Switzerland to Germany (places were Mannheim, Magdeburg, Berlin and others).

Happy about this first encounter, keep on writing

Sincerely, Peter Monte (without "t", they gave it up around 1740).

Ancestors of SABBATORE MONTE

My Great-Grandfather was Federico(Fred)Monte.
Born approx 1858 in Piemonte,Caserta, Italy.
He died in Rome New York on Nov.18th 1899 at age 41 yrs.He was survived by his wife Philomena Mary Lamato and four Children. I located a copy of the Obituary from Rome New York and it stipulated that my Great-Grandfather was also survived by a Brother SABBATORE MONTE who "Lived Out West" It is unknown if this brother was younger or older but the article stipulated that the family had moved to America sometime around 1884. Anyone with information concerning the ancestors of Sabbatore Monte can reach me by E-Mail Hom.Det.Ret.@Lycosmail.com.

MANY THANKS, PAUL J.
Humbert Monte 1665 at Lutry

Dear Friends,

I am looking for any trace on my huguenot anciestors by the name of MONTET who made it as French protestant refugees to Lutry near Lausanne in Switzerland in the mid 17th century. I have some information on a certain Humbert MONTET, who was born 1665 at Lutry, his father being a certain Jaques Montet, coming probably from the Languedoc in the South of France.
Around 1685 Humbert went to the colony of the French huguenots at Mannheim, Germany to marry on 12 May 1688 a certain Catherine Barbier. After the French destroyed Mannheim in 1689, both returned to Lutry for a short time where they had tow children: Francois and Marie Louise. Around 1700, they all returned to Mannheim to eventually settle at the later kingdom of Brandenbourg-Prussia.
Both, Jaques and Humbert were skilled gardeners (maitre jardineir).

Anyone who could help with hints for records to look after or even specified information ?

Thanks for your attention and help

Peter Monte

Hi Peter. In regards to the Hugenots--there was a commander "Tuller," les capitaines Schwaller, Francois MONTET du Valais. They were at the service of Charles IX, a participant in the battles of Jarnac et Moncontour, with the Hugenots. At least, this is my understanding. I have more information on the Montets. Dorothee De Montet was born 5-6-1620 in Paris, Seine, France. In 1717, Francois Montet was born in Perigord, Creuse, France. There are other Montets I have some information on if you are interested. I also know that Perigord is in Dordogne (N 24). Supposedly there are 51 families in that area. My husband is the actual "Montet"----I am the so-called researcher.
