monteiths of Falkirk

I am trying to find any information on a John Monteith who joined the 25th Regiment (King's Own Borderers) on the 4 March 1833 as John Monteath. In the Attestation he gives his place of birth as in the parish of Falkirk, near the town of Falkirk, in the county of Stirling. John gives his age as twenty and 11 months, so he would of been born about 1812.
I have only found two John Monteiths near this date, and eliminated both because my relation was in Ireland (1837-39), South Africa (1840-42), India (1842-55). He discharge from service 26 June 1855 at Chatham aged 42 years.
He does appear on the 1861 Scotland census with his son, James Monteith 9 born Indies, Madras East (actaully born 1851 Bangalore, India). Thank you

The Missouri State Archives is a pretty good site, but not all counties are indexed. It is at http://www.sos.mo.gov/archives/resources/deathcertificates. I did not find Joseph listed.

I found Joseph in the census in 1870, 1880, in Stoddard County, as well as a birth record for Joseph and Mary's son Charles Edward Monteith. All of these list Joseph as being born in Missouri. The birth record indicates Mary was born in Kentucky. These records are all on Ancestry.com. The family in the census records is that of George (PA 1812) and Angeline (MO 1823) Monteith.

Sorry, this is not my Monteith line, though my family lived for a short time in Missouri. Hope this helps.

Mike

I am searching for any information pertaining to Joseph Luther or Luthar Monteith who was born in Kentucky in about 1853. He married Mary Catherine "Mollie" Hawkes and moved to Stoddard County, Missouri. He died of pneumonia (?) sometime around the turn of the last century. I am trying to find at least a death certificate or date of death.

Not sure if there's a connection here:
My family come from the Legetonegan/Dreenan area of Tyrone. I am descended from Henry Monteith (born around 1816)whose father was Robert. Some of Henry's children include Joseph (born about 1859), Rebecca (born about 1867)- similar names of cousins in the next generation, perhaps?

Colin.

I have a further information regarding the Monteiths that I am tracing.

Andrew Monteith married Marian Newman 1853 Liverpool, England.

Their son, Hugh Hyslop Monteith married Rosina Hampton 1908 Newtown, Sydney. Hugh was a plasterer and they lived around the Kogarah/Ramsgate area of Sydney during the 1930's. Hugh died in 1949 Granville, Syndey and Rosina died in 1971 at Kogarah.

Hugh and Rosina Monteith had three known children -
1. Hugh Monteith birth unknown (post 1907), but died in 1908 St Peters Sydney. I would assume that this was their first child and he died at birth, the same year as Hugh and Rosina married.
2. Bertha L Monteith birth unknown (post 1907), but died in 1933 Kogarah.
3. Thomas Raymond Monteith birth unknown (post 1907). In 1936 Thomas was living with his parents at 175 Grand Parade, Kogarah and Thomas was a plasterer the same as Hugh. in 1941 Thomas married Mary Margaret Latter at Hurstville Sydney. Family talk has Thomas and Mary having three children, one female and two males.
- unknown female Monteith
- David Thomas Monteith birth unknown (post 1941) and died in 1977.
- Peter Monteith no information

Do you think there is a connection between my Monteith line and yours? It seems close with both Thomas Monteiths being plasterers. Let me know and we will see if there is a link between the two families. Judith
Hi there,
I have Monteith's in my line, Rebecca Monteith, b. abt 1836-38 Dreenan, Tyrone Ireland. Her father I believe was Joseph Monteith, b. abt 1816, Dreenan, of whom I have a bad copy of a photo.
Joseph married Eleanor Kyle, 19 Jul 1836, Dreenan, Tyrone, Ireland. They had at least 4 children I know of.
Rebecca married John Moran circa 1860 in Victoria, Australia, I have never found this record and suspect they may not have 'officially' married. Some of her children ended up in queensland and one of her sons was named Alexander Moran, so your mention of Alexander who married Mary Staley has me curious, as I investigated that line as possibly part of my own.
How Rebecca came to Australia is still a mystery, though her death certificate suggests she arrived circa 1856. I also do not know if any of her family members came out here as well.

Regards
Megan

**I copy/pasted this reply from another thread to save me typing time, hope that is forgiven.

There was a child Alexander Moran born in 1912 (#24634), Victoria, Australia who's parents were John Moran and Rebecca Montieth. It is impossible for this child to have been born to these parents as, not only was Rebecca in her 70's, John Moran her husband was dead. However this may possibly have been an illigitmate grandchild, of this couple, that was registered under his grandparents names in order to give him/ or his mother some respectability. From what I can tell this trick may have happened several times (at least 3 times that I know of).

Daniel Monteith family of Athens Co., Ohio

I'm looking for more information about Daniel Monteith, a weaver, who was born 1791 in Ireland (probably County Tyrone), his wife Mary [maiden name unknown]who was born about 1792 in Ireland, and their children.

Daniel came to the U.S. on the ship "Living Age" which left the port of Liverpool, and arrived in the port of Baltimore on 23 July 1851. Wife Mary (age 60) and two young Monteiths, Robert (26) and Nancy (16), apparently children of Daniel and Mary, were on the same boat. They stated their destination as Pittsburgh, which was a pretty common starting point for the trip to Ohio.

Daniel settled in Athens Co., Ohio, where he was a farmer. He and his family (minus Nancy, who probably married before 1860) are there in the 1860 and 1870 census, but Daniel and Mary disappear after that time.

Son "Rob. Monteith" (best records on his birth indicate he was born in 1823 in Ireland) shows up in the 1880 census living in the home of John and Mary Scott, as a brother-in-law of the head of household. So Mary Scott (b. 1826 in Ireland) was a Monteith sibling belonging to this family (I found death records for several of her children and it does confirm that their mother's maiden name was Monteith). John and Mary Scott arrived in Athens Co., Ohio between 1840 (no census record) and 1850 (census record for John and Mary and one infant), probably closer to 1850 given their ages. I have not yet found their ship's passenger list.

In addition, my ggg-grandmother appears to have also been part of this family. I want to avoid blindly making an absolute assumption that she was Daniel's child, but some coincidences, plus the proximity, make me think it is possible.

Her name was Rebecca Monteith (several of her children's death certificates confirm this was her maiden name). Rebecca was born 1816 in Ireland. She married George Duncan around 1840 in Ireland and their first four children, all daughters, were born there, the fourth one in 1850. Their first son, my gg-grandfather, James Duncan, was born 16 Jul 1852 near Montreal, Canada. Family stories have it that he was nearly born on the boat on the way over, but I cannot find a passenger list for the family. I do find the family (without James) on the 1851 Canadian census in York Co., Ontario--the census was actually taken in the spring of 1852, apparently. The next son was born in 1855 in Athens Co., Ohio. And he was named John Scott Duncan.

This name is my only real, solid clue that Rebecca was probably tied to Daniel Monteith's family, because it would make so much sense for Rebecca to name a son after her brother-in-law. In this case that would be John Scott, husband of Mary Monteith.

(There is another hint that this Scott family may be tied to George and Rebecca Duncan--John Scott's younger brother Matthew was married to Esther/Hester Hick, a daughter of Mark Hick and Elizabeth Duncan. Elizabeth Duncan may be a younger sister of my George Duncan, since she was born in Ireland, and came through Canada, to Athens Co., Ohio around the same time as George. Again, I want to avoid making the assumption that this was a definite relationship, but it is possible.)

Looking at the outline of Daniel and Mary Monteith's family, it looks to me as if there must have been several more children. It was normal for a woman's childbearing to range about twenty years from oldest child to youngest, but that usually went along with having numerous children. Rebecca would be old enough be one of their oldest children (b. 1816), then Robert (b. 1823), then Mary (b. 1826), and then Nancy (b. 1835) who would be about the youngest. I would think there were more than four children. Were there others who came over? Some that stayed behind in Ireland? Some that came over and settled in Canada? Were there a lot of stillbirths and miscarriages?

So--Does anyone know of other Monteiths from Athens, Ohio (or left behind in Ireland) who might fit into this family? Has anyone got information on who Nancy Monteith might have married between 1851 and 1860 (in Ohio, presumably)? Does anyone have information on Daniel Monteith back in (County Tyrone?) Ireland? Has anyone seen a passenger list that included John and Mary Monteith Scott or that included George and Rebecca Monteith Duncan (with children Mary Jane, Lizzie, Mattie, and Annie?)

I had hit a brick wall in tracing back my Monteiths and Duncans but this recent discovery of the possible Scott connection makes it seem possible to overcome!

Thanks in advance to everyone for checking on this!

Alan, sorry for the late response. I never received your latest e-mail.

First of all my search was strictly based on a haunch. All I know of my GGG grandfather Henry is his birth or baptism year (1834)and he lost a sister at sea. According to our records when he arrived to Canada, he was alone. So when I searched for Henrys in Scotland and Ireland, I found James and Lillias with a son Henry and older daughter. I presume Henry would have traveled with an older sibling (or) family but we have nothing more to substantiate this.

The other Monteith family I mentioned in a earlier e-mail arrived in St. John, New Brunswick Canada 1847 on the John Clarke ship. They were from Castlederg and their names are: Samuel, Susan, Jane, John, James, Robert, and William. Robert and William are listed at age 13 and 12 respectivily.

Another record I found relates to a John Monteith (1808, emigrated to Ontario, Canada from County Tyrone 1840's. His parents are James and Elizabeth(Bessie) The parents remained in N. Ireland. John and wife Jane had eight children. They had a daughter (Mary) b.1839 who ironically, died en route to Canada. But clearly no link to our clan.

I had hoped you would have additional information about the Monteith side. I will do some more research when time allows.

Alan, surprised to hear back on this thread! I have posted it over and over since 2002/03.
Now, I have to wonder if we are talking about the same couple. The information I have supports only one of the children you named and that is James, unless William's middle or baptism name is Henry. I also show an older daughter named Anabella, which makes sense since Lillias's mom's name is the same. I will have to pull my references (I filed them away back in 2002) and see what I can come up with. Just briefly though...

Our oral family history, as mentioned in my post, says William (Billy) came to Canada with a sister who died at sea. There are no records of the name of the boat to confirm the journey or if "Henry" had any siblings. They are from Scotland but came through Ireland supposedly on a cattle boat, hence no records.

Now, I did read of a James Monteith who came to Canada earlier and settled north of New Brunswick. I thought they could be related but it sounds like they may be your kin. Are you familiar with that Monteith clan?

Do you have any Monteith cousins with oral history?

Thanks, Angela

I am descended from Sarah Monteith, b. St Pancras London, 1829, father William Monteith, mother Jane Elizabeth Chapman, married St. Martin in the Fiels, 28th Feb., 1813,in 1841 Jane Elizabeth was a widow. Sarah married Edward Robinson coach painter, at Geelong, Victoria Australia, Novr. 1845. They settled at Petersham, Sydney...8 children. I believe Sarah had siblings named John, b.1826, married Amelia Hutchinson, St Pancras

1857. ...William b. 1817...Jane b. 1814, Elizabeth b.1819, maried Cowen, another Jane b. 1821. I believe had considerable wealth, as Sarah & Edward built & lived in Monteith Cottage, Petersham, Sydney, where Ed. was a coach painter, & both were drapers at Petersham & inner Sydney. I hope you have some more for me on these Monteiths, as that is as far back as I can find out anything.
I know this post is rather old, but maybe the original poster or others are out there.

John W. Monteith is my great-grandfather, though I don't have anything indicating his middle name, other than W. Woodbury does make sense as it would be his maternal grandmother's last name. I would be happy to fill in the missing information. John was born in Shelbina, MO, where his father John A. Monteith resided for just a short time. John A. Monteith was born in New York, and lived in Allegan County, Michigan. In later years, John A. and John W. and their families moved to Elkhart, IN. John A. Monteith and Martha Fay Brigham had 12 children in all. I have information on all 12.

Mike

I am from the line of Monteiths that the spelling was altered in the late 1700's to Mantooth. My line begins with Thomas Monteith b. 1694 in Scotland. He came to America before 1735. This line moved from Virginia to North Carolina. His grandson, Thomas Mantooth settled in Tennesse around 1830. Between 1880-1900 this family moves further west to the Texas and Oklahoma areas. My generation has made it all the way out west to California. I would love to share info with anyone interested

Re: Lillias Douglas-Monteith

I'm a direct descendant of James and Lillias Monteith, through their son John Douglas. The information that I know of is that Lillias's parents were James Douglas and Annabella Todd, both were born around 1775, and Lillias was born in Stewarton in 1805. James Monteith was born in 1802 in Glasgow, but I don't know about his parents. They married in the parish of Eastwood, county of Renfrewshire, in 1825. On John Douglas's birth certificate, James is listed as a merchant. The children of James and Lillias also included James born in 1832, and from the 1841 census there was a Rebecca born around 1836, Mary around 1839, and William around 1840. In 1841 they were living at 56 Hill Street, Barony (north of Glasgow). I haven't been able to find anything else about the family, other than John Douglas's line. I'd be interested to know when you think they might have made this journey, and anything else you might know about the family. Thanks.

Re: Henry Monteith

I’ve only recently come on to this site, but having corresponded with Angela on here and finding out this story about Henry’s voyage from her, I suspect that he is the brother of my ancestor John Douglas Monteith. Possibly you have found out more since posting this in 2000, and I’d be intrigued to know more about Henry and his descendants if you care to share this information.
If the link that we’ve established is correct, then Henry’s parents were James Monteith and Lillias Douglas. Lillias's parents were James Douglas and Annabella Todd, both were born around 1775, and Lillias was born in Stewarton in 1805. James Monteith was born in 1802 in Glasgow, but I don't know anything about his parents. They married in the parish of Eastwood, in the county of Renfrewshire, in 1825. On John Douglas's birth certificate, James is listed as a merchant. The children of James and Lillias were Annabella (1826), John Douglas (1828), Henry (1829) James (1832), Adam (1834) Rebecca (c.1836), Mary (c.1839), and William (c.1840). In 1841 the family were living at 56 Hill Street, Barony (north of Glasgow).
As I say, any information about the family would be gratefully received, especially if there might be the chance that other family members emigrated as well. Thanks.
Re: Lillias Douglas-Monteith

Hello Angela,
I think that we are definitely talking about the same people, as I have records of the four children that you named and dated (Annabella, John Douglas, Henry and Adam), as well as the four younger ones that I mentioned (James, Rebecca, Mary and William). I've never heard this story of the journey to Canada before, but my family line stayed in the UK - from John Douglas onwards they were based in Liverpool and then later generations moved to London, which is where I'm writing from! However, there are no records of Lillias and James Monteith after the 1841 census and no death certificates either, so I'm curious as to whether they and possibly other family members may have emigrated to Canada as well, maybe in the 1840s. It could be that the James Monteith you mentioned settling in New Brunswick is my ancestor. I have an idea that my ancestor Abraham Monteith who was John Douglas's son might also have gone to Canada as there is an A. Monteith listed on the passenger lists going from Liverpool to Canada. It would be interesting to know how many Monteiths may have settled in the country. Are you aware of an extended family there? What's your connection to the family?
Thanks, Alan
