Gustav O. and Elvira Villareal Montemayor Family - San Antonio

I am doing genealogy for my paternal family.

Berta/Bertha Marie(a) Montemayor married my Stephen Lea Ely and they had a dtr Elizabeth. Stephen got his Ph.D at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in Philosophy and was on staff there for many years. He died of cancer in 7 May 1947 in Madison, was cremated and buried in a lot owned by Bertha in Madison.

Bertha died November 8, 2008 in Fairhope, Alabama. She had been married 4X (once before Dr. Ely, then Robert Crafton Gilpin, then pediatrician Rollie Berghard in Alabama who died in 07-08.

Bertha was the dtr of Gustaf and Elvira Villareal Montemayor born 15 June 1921 in San Antonio. About 1926, the family moved to Janesville, Wisconsin where Gustav worked for the Parker Pen Co. Bertha attended Janesville schools and the University of Wisconsin at Madison where she met Stephen. She had a brother Charlie who died of cancer in early 2008 (maybe Xmas).

Any Montemayor info would be helpful. I'd be glad to trade.

Trying to find my father

In 1965 my mother Annie was separated from her husband and living in Pensacola, FL working on the naval base there. She met a Marine, Sgt. Ray Montemayor, and they had a brief relationship. When she was pregnant she reconciled with her husband and moved to MI. I was born in August of 1966. Annie and her husband passed away in a car accident that December. I only found out the truth and a name about 2 years ago. I am trying to find a former Marine named Ray Montemayor who would have been in the Marine Support Division of Pensacola Naval Air Station in the mid 1960's. If anyone can help please respond.

Thank you for the information. In deed, Jose Fidencio Montemayor was my grandfather. Refugio Montemayor was my great-grandfather, Policarpo Montemayor was Refugio's father and Francisco Montemayor was Policarpo's father. I have been able to trace them back to Villa de Santiago, Nuevo Leon. I also went to the local LDS Church Family History Center and did some microfilm searching; I found lots more of information there. So you are Montemayor too? I know that in the early 1800's there were Montemayor's in General Teran. I don't know if there was a connection with Policapo Montemayor. Refugio Montemayor married Constancia Perez Ayala. The Ayala family was from China, N.L. Anyway, thank you so much again for contacting me with this information.

---Delia

I believe they had 9 children and they all were baptized in the Catholic Church in General Teran, Nuevo Leon. I don't know if they had anymore children, these were the only ones registered. I don't know if I am related to them. However, my greatgrandfather Refugio Montemayor married Maria Constancia Perez from General Teran, Nuevo Leon. All of their children were also baptized in the church of Nuestra Senora de la Soledad de la Mota, General Teran, Nuevo Leon.

Don't know if this is the same time frame - Stephen Lee Ely married Bertha Montemayor in Chicago, Illinois (US). in 1945 -no date.
About 1926, Gustav and Elvira moved to Janesville, Wisconsin, where Gustav worked for the Parker Pen Co. (hmmm - cemetery check in order I think).
I wonder if we may be looking for the same family. My eldest son is phillip clifford hernandez-parkinson. His father's name is phillip a Hernandez. But, his grandmother's last name before marrige was montemayor and although some of the family still call Los Angles home they were all from San Antonio Tx. As far as phillip SR. was concerned, he had an older brother and sister so that would have been mid-50's but he also had two younger half brother's and one half sister. they would have been born early to mid sixies.
write back if anything sounds right.
lynda.

MONTEMAYOR - ELY

My genealogy study starts with Bertha Montemayor who married Stephen Lee Ely in 1945 in Chicago.

Bertha was born to Gustav Octavius and Elvira Villarreal Montemayor on June 15, 1921 in San Antonio. About 1926, the Montemayor family moved to Janesville, Wisconsin where dad worked for the Parker Pen Comnpany. Bertha attended Janesville schools and the University fo Wisconsin at Madison where she met Stephen.

Stephen graduated from UW/Madison with a Ph.D in philosophy. He was a talented and beloved teacher and when he died May 7, 1947 at the age of 42, the flags over the university flew at half mast in mourning. (Only the U.S. president can declare a half-mast occasion). His ashes are interred in Roselawn Memorial Park, 601 E. Broadway, Monona, Wisconsin 53716. ph 608-222-4212. Bertha and Stephen had a daughter, Elizabeth Montemayor Ely, born July 30, 1948 in Madison.

Bertha Montemayor Ely married Robert Crafton Gilpin on 29 September 1949 in Madison. After he graduated from UW, they moved to Indianapolis where Bertha attended Butler University earning her BA in languages. She teaches Spanish at the private Park-Tudor School in Indianapolis (January 1985 information)

I did a Montemayor search and came up with nothing.

My granfather Zosimo Montemayor was from Pangasinan. What I'm interested in is to find out whether this family name was just given by then Spanish government for ease of administration or does the family really did have a Spanish ancestor. Who was this ancestor and when did he/she arrive in the Philippines?

The Mexicans write their names followed by paternal then maternal family names. In the Philippines, it is the reverse- names are followed by maternal (as middle initial) then paternal family name. When did this start? Therefore, in the Philippines, Montemayor is carried by the males. Was the original ancestor in the Philippines then a male?

I am actually a motemayor but my grandfather's name was changed when he joined the american army in the 20,s. There is a connection with the two names in portugal. All my life I heard grand stories of the family's past, my grandfather reported he was from mexico but we have other evidence-very complicated. The story I have obtained is that montemayor's backed in some way pizarro in the undertaking of the peru conquest which was ruthless but very profitable, this went on for several years and when pizarro refused to give his cut he was murdered by the family. They took his cut and several inca princes's and found themselves in monterrey mexico where they bought a governers title and named the town after the viceroy of monterrey. My grandfather would not talk about this until his final years, he lived just a few weeks before his 100th birthday. I actually saw this story on a bbc documentary about the conquestadors. There is the town in spain with the moorish castle, there is the french connection, the hapsburg connection, the argentine connection a montain range the pope connection which leed to the naple connection so good luck.
