I'm Looking For Relatives Of Berkley Otis Montford

My father Berkley Otis Montford was a black man born May 18,1921 and died July 4,1988.He was born in Onslow,N.C and moved to Brooklyn,N.Y and married my mother in 1949.
He was stationed in Ft. Bragg,N.C and enlisted in 1942.He was a kitchen worker in hotels and also worked in hospitals.We believe my sister and myself are the only children.Please contact me with any information or questions you may have.Thank you,Regina Montford

Seeking any info on my Grandfather (Pa), Walter G. Montford; born 08 Nov 1883, Waycross, Ga. and his father John C. Montford (?), Ga. Anything on these two will be more than I have. I can not seem to find any records on Ware Co., Ga., I know there was a fire in 185?. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

I am in search of ancesters of my ggg grandmothers family. She was Charlotte Montford, born late 1700's - not sure where - but family lore says she was of the French Huguenots, possibly de Montfort. She married John Campbell Jr. who came from Scotland at a yound age, was a Sergeant in the 74th Regiment and came to Canada early 1820's. They were granted land in New Brunswick in 1812. This is all we know of Charlotte, other than her very hard life in NB.
Any knowledge of Montford/Montforts coming to Canada?

Cuyler Vaughn Montford

I am looking for information on my great-grandfather - Cuyler Vaughn. I have found numerous census records in Kansas as early as 1895.

Supposedly he was born in Wisconsin in September 1862 - a definite is the death date - 1964 in Burrton, Kansas.

His parents were both from New York.

The story he told my mother was that no one would want to know about his family - they're just a bunch of thieves.

So, it is rather difficult finding information.

All help would be greatly appreciated!

I wonder if this was the Horace Montford b. 1861 at St. Peter, Herefordshire UK. His mother was an Ellen and he had a sister Ellen too - who migrated to Oz in 1885. Last trace I can find of him he was a seaman on a (small - 4 crew) vessel during the 1881 English census. A cousin of his migrated here in the 1920's too. I'm a ggrandson of immigrant Ellen's.

There's a small cemetery 10 miles west of US 10 (in Monticello).When you are almost out of town (North) there's a small two-lane road called Lake something. Turn left. It's about 10 miles to where you make a right turn. You make your right turn exactly across the street from a entrance to the plantation. You'll be driving on a raised bed, one-lane, Georgia red clay out in the sticks.
There are 3 momuments. The tallest is for Jesse Sinclair Montford and his wife. The second is a momument shaped like a book/scroll. After conducting research we found that the plain slab next to the daughter's was in fact James Warren Montgomery, the daughter's,Martha Elizabeth known as Lizzi, were married. So I had a head stone installed for me. I've often there must be more Montfords & Montgomerys around North Florida. There are some buried in the big cemetery in Thomasville, Georgia (NOT the Old Cememtery) Find the caretaker and he can take you anywhere - he knows it all! And, as I told you before there were lots of Montfords in Dublin,Georgia. I found a lot of info in the Bartow, Fla genealogy library; The Thomasville Library. The Thomasville, Georgia geneaology library and the Cairo, Georgia Library I've been to many, many, many cemeteries, Please let me know if you find out anything and I'll send what else I have. The Jesse Sinclair Montford that I was looking for is buried in a rural (and I mean rural!) cemetery 10 miles west of Monticello, Fla. I would like to find out where he came from.

Let me know if you find anything about Montfords in north Florida. There are a LOT of Montfords in Dublin, Georgia so you might check there. There are some in North Carolina and TN. Good luck!

Am looking for the father (name unknown) of Jesse Sinclair Montford . He married Carolina Virginia Holderness in Leon Co, Fla. He was born 6/13/1829 & died 10/30/1910. He is buried in a small cemetery (Union Methodist) outside Monticello, Leon Co, Fla. "Jesse" is spelled "Jessie" on the grave marker. Thanks.

I'm from a family de Montfort - my aunt chased our family decent from French Dukes, however we know of a branch that ended up in shropshire called Montford as well

I am from Canada also. Looking for Montford's that are related. My father is Gordon. His father was Arnold, although that was his second name. His first name I believe was Harold. He served in the Scottish Regiment.

Yes, I am still living in Ontario. My father Gordon was born in 1939, in Windsor. I know that his Grandmother's name was Addie. She had a brother named Lloyd. There were also two or three other brothers, but their names escape me. My fathers' fathers name was Wilbert John Arnold. Although, he went by the name of Arnold. I am pretty sure his given name was Wilbert. Maybe you could tell me a bit about yourself.

Hi Allan;
This is Deborah Montford. I do not believe that we are related. My Dad's name Gordon. His second name is Howard. His second name Howard is from relatives from the war. I can't give you anymore information to go by. My Grandmother has become forgetful. LLoyd Montford moved to Detroit, and married a woman named Arlene. He would be approx. 80 years or older. The problem with the family, is that they didn't go by their first names, only their second names. It is hard to track down people like this. I am sorry that I can't be of more assistance to you Allan. If you have any new information maybe you could pass it on to me. This is very frustrating.

I have just seen your message on the Ancestry Board. I wonder if your Horace was the son of my husband's great-grandfather's brother. Horace would have been born c.1862 to Henry Montford (cabinet maker) of Shrewsbury (Shropshire) and London, and his wife Ellen Morris of Ross on Wye (Herefordshire). Horace was a sailor which might explain how he got to Australia. I have more information if you would like it.

Dawson and de Montfort/Montford

From my research, the spelling seems to alternate and overlap between Montford and Montfort. One of my ancestors, Sir Roger Dawson, supposedly married a daughter of Sir Simon Montfort/d but my calculations put their marriage at around 1400, way past the time of Earl Simon who died 1265.

Earl Simon de Montfort seems to have only had female surviving descendants - Anastasia, dau of Guy being the last.

There was a family of de Montforts living in Rutland Warwickshire, the head of which, one Peter de Montfort, fought and died alongside Earl Simon - but I have been unable to find literature on any male descendants of that line - only a grandaughter, Elizabeth who married William Montacute.

There was also the elder French branch of Earl Simon's relatives, and then there were the de Montforts of Brittany who were no relation.

I am intrigued. Who was this Sir Simon whose daughter married my ancestor??? The Dawsons were mere knights, gentry perhaps but not nobility.

I am searching for any information on Thomas J. Montford, who married Ceiley Bobbett on October 8, 1822 in Warren County, NC, record 01162 bond #000161852, bondsman Kinchen Harris. Ive just stumbled upon a submission to the LDS Ancestral File regarding a Thomas Montford, who was born about 1798 in Warren, NC and died in Greene County, Alabama and married Seley Bobbett on that same date. Im hoping this is the connection Ive been looking for to my gg grandfather, John T. Montford. Ive never been able to find his parents or any siblings. Census records indicate that his parents were both born in North Carolina, but that John himself was born somewhere in Alabama. His date of birth was March 8, 1827 and he married, ca. 1858, Henrietta A. Brown of Choctaw Co., Ala. and had the following children:

Elizabeth Nancy Montford, b. 1860 Ala.
Frances Veronica Montford, b. 1863 Ala.
William A. Montford, b. 1868 Ala.
Thomas Montford, b. 1869 Ala.
Benjamin Montford, b. 1876 Miss or Tex.

We are trying to find out where Horace Montford came from and where he might have gone to. We do know that he was married in Charters Towers, Queensland Australia int he 1890's. He produced a daughter named Ellen Montford on July 8 1899, who is my grandmother. I trying to pick up the pieces.

We have been looking for Horace Montford. But unable to locate where he came from. Horace Montford married in Charters Towers, Australia sometime in the 1890's and produced a child Ellen Montford on July 8, 1899. Horace may have been drawn to the goldrush that had occurred there. Ellen is my grandmother.

Dell Montford

Dell is a distant grandfather of mine. He married Elnora Martin. They both died in Terra Haute, Indiana in the late 1800's. I know of one daughter, Hattie Elnora Martin, 1856 - 1944 who died in South Dakota.

I, too, am looking for Montfords that originated in NC. My great-great grandfather John T. Montford was born in Al, but 1900 census says both parents were born in NC. I've never found any of his family. He was born March 8, 1827 and married in Choctaw County, Alabama. I've found Montfords in Georgia Florida, but never saw a connection. Any ideas?

My Father and his brothers all came to Canada prior to the first world war.I think one or more moved down to the States sometime after the war.The Montford bros. were Samuel,Reg,Harry,Howard,Bill and Eric. Kevin, I've been trying to research our family tree beginning in Florida. It appears most of the Montfords in Fla are related.Our branch has been in Calhoun County since at least 1850. It seems we came "accross the river" Appalachicola River from Leon and Liberty Counties. Prior to that it seems we came down from North Carolina through Georgia. I've went back to my great grandfather William G. Montford 1841-1921, who served in the Confederate Army. I'm trying to find his parents and grand parents etc. Any light you might shed would be appreciated. I curently have 3-4 hundred of our relatives on Family Tree Maker. I have a son Harold Kevin Montford.
