Hello. I am looking for the family of my great, great-grandfather's family. Erastus Jacobs was born on September 31, 1829. It was said that he was a German Immigrant and his parents died shortly after their arrival in NY... my best guess is ~1830... and that is based on Erastus' age when he was said to have been orphaned. It was said that Erastus was orphaned at the age of 5 1/2 - 6 months old. He was placed in an orphanage and we are not sure whether or not Erastus had any siblings or not. We are not sure what NY orphanage he stayed in and grew up in either. Erastus was the son of whom we believe to be Wolfgang and Ariel/Erlena(?) Jacobs. We are not sure of the spelling of her first name, nor do we know her last name. Erastus' first married Eliza Brown and left NY because of a failed dairy farm. Apparently he stayed on a farm next to the Brown Family Farm and that is how he came to know Eliza Brown.
Later he married Miss Mary Jane Snodgrass on 15 Oct 1867 in McDonough Co., IL.
Samuel Snodgrass and Mary Chambers were Mary Jane's parents.
The Chambers and Mary Spinning Montfort arrived in Philadelphia PA. They later moved to the Crawford County in the upper northeast corner of PA. This is where my great-grandmother - Rose Etta Jacobs was born. Then later they moved to Bardolph, Macomb County, IL.
As for our Snodgrass family, according to other Snodgrass researchers, Mary Jane was daughter of Samuel Snodgrass and Mary Chambers, both of Ireland. William Snodgrass (b. ca 1828) was her oldest brother; Agnes was his wife, not Mary Jane's sister, but her sister-in-law. Her brother Samuel (b. May 1844) married Mary Spinning Montfort. Other siblings were Margaret, Robert, and Elizabeth. They all moved from Crawford County, PA to McDonough County, IL. Mary Jane's parents were the Irish immigrants, I believe from County Cork, Ireland.
Bardolph, Macomb County, IL.: Later, in 1856, the Hendricks Bros., erected a two-story hotel building. One of the brothers occupied it with his family, and run the place. A short time afterward the building was bought, on time payments, by a man named Hunter. In 1861, as he had failed to pay for it, it reverted to the original proprietors. They, however, sold it to A. J. Turney. He occupied it till 1863, and then disposed of it to Seth Jacobs, and the sisters of the latter, who conducted it till three years later, when Mrs. Margaret Rhea purchased it. She had it four years, and was succeeded by E. T. Osborn, who only remained in possession one year. He traded it to Erastus Jacobs, who was succeeded by the present proprietor and occupant, N. H. Jackson, in April, 1884.
Elza Brown, Erastus Jacobs, and Mary Jane Snodgrass are buried there in Bardolph, Macomb County, IL.
In the 1900 Census showed them in Walnut Grove Twp., Good Hope, IL 114-51-1-69.
