Hi William B Montgomery was my GGGrandfather and I am trying to work back from his family in NZ using my father's memory. Dad recalls that his Grandfather(William's son) said that Monty was his cousin but I can't work out where William connects to Monty. I have various pieces of informtaion relating to William but really difficult to track back to his family in the UK.

My great great grandmother was Mary Ann Montgomery-Easley.She married my great great grandfather Samuel Franklin Easley in Old Tishomingo,MS in 1848.Their second child was named after Peter H Montgomery. They moved to MO. shortly after the birth of their first child William Greene Easley. Two other childten besides Peter H Easley were born in MO(Missouri Adeline, and Francis Marion Easley. In the early 1860s they moved to Wise county,TX and had two children there-Susan,and Ezra. There is a mystery as to what happened to Mary and Samuel. It is assumed they died in the 1870s.Peter H Easley was listed as head of household in the 1880 Wise co.Census, looking after his younger siblings

Hi Tim
Though I am by far no expert...because for the last few years I have been researching inN Ireland...and MANY Monygomery were there...let me just "try" giving some ideas.

First...one of the first "SCottish" lines to settle in N Ireland during the "Ulster Plantatation" were Montgomery. Now I may be wrong in detail but...James the King wanted to reward those Scots that had fought for him and he also wanted the "Irish" chiefs that had given him problems OUT so he gave and to a lot of Scots...one of those was a Montgomery. This time frome was mid 1600s.

So Scots went to N Ireland. From the mid 1600s on....you have conflicts. Some were religious...like the massacres during this time where many may have left. You also had disease out breaks...some left during those times. Political differences...more left....and if you read the history of N Ireland you will learn that it was NOT just during the potato famine years that people left BUT a consecutive number of years.

More then anything else though there is ONE thing you need to understand. Many of these families had many children. My ggg grandparents had 18! Many were sons. Usually only the oldest son inherited the father's land etc. So ...younger sons..if they didn't "marry" into land or fortune decided to go elsewhere for that fortune. Where else to go...but the new worlds..America..Canada...Australia. The places that others who had left before wrote home about or had gone to.

My one relative left N Ireland for America...because his son had severe asthme..the doctor told him America would be good for his son, besides the father's brother was already there...So why not go? This was the 1850s.

So...you see there were MANY reasons why your ancestors may have left N Ireland. Of course as you said...they may hae come from Scotland...BUT I thought I'd let you know about all this too.

Sue in NY

PS..Just a past note....Though perhaps NOT always true...I have found it to be more true then NOT...Families DID follow each other. Whether it was brothers and sisters...or cousins...they tended to follow..if only for a short time then perhaps "move on".

Remember...they were looking for "new" beginings. If someone in the family left for new shores..they often wrote home. Others hearing of the good lands etc...soon followed. If they hadn't already left together.

So...when looking at ship logs remember to look ALL thru the log. You never know who you might find!

These are all tid bits that may help in your search. Sometimes we need to put our minds "back" in time to find our clues!

GL

Re: Montgomery in New Brunswick Canada tracing from the U.S.

Hi!
You make no mention of the "time frame" you are talking about....BUT I too have been researching "Montgomery"in N Ireland.

In the mid 1600's The King (England) granted land to the Scottish Montgomerys...Many traveled there and settled...some left Scotland for new shores...like Canada, America and Australia and England

Different many turbulent times in N Ireland...(if they went there)..some might have first settled in N Ireland but then left for many reasons. Some reasons were...disease epidemics in NI...Religious turmoil.... (1940s) potato faminine...or just that..since families had so many children..and many sons and only the "oldest" son would inherit the father's fortune...younger sons left to find their fortunes..many traveling to new lands.

In N Ireland County Fermanagh had a large concentration of Montgomery. Mine descend from these. I suggest...in your researching if you can get books about the history of N Ireland/ Scotland or even the emigration from these countries...you may better understand it...it has proved extremely helpful to me.

Also...in the early years...Rittsburgh was a very big port in America, as far as those coming in were concerned, And YES many crossed the border...either to Canada or vice a versa. A few of mine...though settling in NY...came thru Pittsburgh on the early 1800s.

I hope this helps in some way. Your best bet is trying to find..old records...obits...death certs...or anything that "might" hold a clue as to where exactly they were from. I know it is tough...trust me...!

Good luck in your search. And yes...though I am lucky in knowing "where" my Montgomery lived in mid 1700s...it is still a giant task in searching back. GL

Sue in NY

Family of George W. MORRIS and Rachel Anne RINEHART (Greene Co., PA)

Seeking information on the family of Simon RINEHART and Rebecca MONTGOMERY who probably lived for a time in Greene Co., PA.
Simon and Rebecca are supposedly the parents of Rachel Anne Rinehart (1863-1940) who married George W. MORRIS (1865-1932) and had four surviving children: Sarah Rebecca (1887-1911); Jesse Robert (1894-1964); Minerva Evelyn (1896-1916); and Joseph Franklin (1900-1966). I have been able to identify George W. and Sarah Rebecca in the census for 1870—1930, but I can not identify Simon Rinehart and Rebecca Montgomery as the parents of Rachel Anne Rinehart.

Are Simon Rinehart and Rebecca Montgomery the parents of Rachel Anne Rinehart?
What are the birth and death dates and places of Simon and Rebecca?
Willing to share information.

Bill Muller
muller1938@yahoo.com

Re: Gen. Richard montgomery

I am a descendant of Henry Montgomery. All family lore states Henry's father came to this country from Ireland to
help his relative Richard in the Battle of Quebec. We are participating in the CMSI Montgomery DNA. Again family lore has Henry born in either Ireland or PA. He served at Camp Security and I can trace him through several events in the PA State Archives books. He was a professional soldier intil 1800 (I started with his marriage in 1799 and traced back) I'm told by Jonathan Stayer of the PA State Archives, who did his thesis on Camp Security in PA, that if this is our Henry then he indeed served in the Revolutionary Way but many men moved on before states lists of soldiers were made up. Could Henry's father have been the illigitimate child spoken of in CMSI material, there was a son and daughter. I've checked out other Henry Montgomerys in the 1790 census and none fit the Camp Security period. I have been a member of CMSI in the past.
We have also had CGI work on this with no luck. Any suggestions or reading would be appreciated.

JeanP. Rogan
jeanprogan@yahoo.com
Hiya,
I have very patchy information.
My Mum is the only surviving member of the Montgomery line that has any information.
My Great Great Grandfather is Charles Wood Montgomery who married in the U.K (Chorlton) in 1878.
I can find no trace of him before this date in Births marriages or deaths and can't find his father Samuel Montgomery either (in relation to Charles)
The family word of mouth was that this side of the family came from Ireland and my Mum says County Cork.
I was wondering if there were any matching family members out there that this would fit?
Charles was born in 1858 and so his Father must have been born before 1838.
Can anyone help?
Thanks!
Jo

Re: Montgomery in New Brunswick Canada tracing from the U.S.

Hi Sue,
Thanks so much for the very detailed reply! You're so right ... the date I have of emigration was 1833. His name was James Montgomery and I believe his wife was Jane. I had found a record from a ship called the Trial where a James and John Montgomery boarded from Londonderry 1833. I believe the ships port of call was St. John, N.B. So, I've taken some liberties and have concluded that this must have been him. However, his wife was not listed and they were most definitely married in Ireland since the 1851 census has a daughter, Margaret, listed as born in 1829 in Ireland and then the next child listed, Agnes, born December 12, 1832 in St. Andrews, N.B. Now the only problem is that the ships year was listed as 1833 and the year of emigration was listed as 1833 as well on the 1851 census. So ... a bit confusing with dates but that seems to have occurred a lot back then!! Anyway ... I began to wonder what would have driven them from Ireland in 1833? So, I was thinking that perhaps they hadn't come from Ireland at all to Canada but may have in fact come through the U.S. That was why I had asked. Sorry I forgot about the timeframe.
Thanks,
Tim in NYC
Montgomery in New Brunswick Canada tracing from the U.S.

It always makes me wonder where my New Brunswick, Canada Montgomerys came from considering they're always seem to be so many who ended up in Pennsylvania or in the southern U.S. I've always thought they came directly from Ireland to Canada but since I can't seem to verify that 100% I really wonder if they didn't come to the U.S. first and then move on to Canada. Has anyone been able to trace any Montgomery lineage to New Brunswick that they also traced to either PA. or one of the southern states?

Lizzie Montgomery, New York City, 1878

I have a letter I received a few years ago as a bonus when I bought some old maps. I just found it again and found it quite interesting. It is written by a lady named Lizzie Montgomery who was evidently originally from Philadelphia, PA, but she is working for the Cornell family who were quite wealthy and lived in a "large white house on 5th Avenue." She talks about going to A. F. Stewart's store and how nice it was, how New Yorkers really celebrate Christmas but made more to do of New Years, and how everything is so rushed compared to Philadelphia. She is writing to Elizabeth Marshall (she addresses her as Aunt) on South Ward in Philadelphia. The letter is museum quality preserved and I would love to know who this lady was, especially since I have Montgomery's in the family.
