Hello!

I hope that perhaps someone can help me gain more Knowledge on my great grandmother, Calista Montour. She was born, I beleive in Shawano County, about 1904, to Frank and Alice May (Weaver) Harvey. She Married my Great Grandfather, her uncle through marriage, on 10 June 1919 in the town of Wescott. ( I have a copy of their Marriage License.) I would like to see if anyone has any pictures of her, or perhaps a birthdate, as 1904 is only an approximation. Her daughter Jane Frances Montour is my grandmother.

Thank you!

Ande Vanderwalker

Montour or Montoure in Wisconsin

Hello everybody. I am looking for any info on Montoure's from Wisconsin. My great grandfather Fred Montoure was born in DePere WI in 1860, had a brother Antone and sister Mary, who all ended up in WA state around 1914. Apparently Fred's father was also Fred, who probably came from Quebec. Could you all ask your older relatives about these names? Any feedback at all would be a great help, even if just to eliminate a possible branch. You all must be family somewhere along the line! Thank you Jana

Monture/Montour: 1800s Esther, John, Charles, Daniel, Mary, etc.

Breakthrough!! The 1860 census for Bay City, Michigan has the following family (estimated year of birth in italics are mine. Place of birth for all is given as Canada, but see below):

Esther MONTURE, age 41 (est. b 1819), widow
Freeman, 24 (1836), blacksmith
Charles, 18 (1842), blacksmith
Mary, 17 (1843)
Daniel, 13 (1847)
M(arielouise? transcribed as Marcelene?), 11 (1849)
John, 9 (1851)
William, 7 (1853)
Charles Taylor, 47, blacksmith (boarder? - doesn't state)

I am descended from Freeman MONTOUR, who ended up in Mississippi after the Civil War. He said the family name was Montoure, but somehow changed. His family lived in the Shawano area ("mouth of the Mississippi" - the families stayed in contact through the early 1900s). He also believed he had been born in France and that the family had come to the WI area through Canada. He spoke only French until after the War (previous post on Freeman and his family, but I now have even more).

I believe one of these sons listed is John Montour of Shawano. The 1870 census lists Canada as John's place of birth, but 1880 shows NY. But his date of birth also matches this family, and the location.

I believe another son was Charles Montour, enlisted 18 Oct 1861, age 20, served 1st Cavalry Light Artillery (how necessary to have a blacksmith for cavalry).

I'm also curious about Charles Montour listed in 1849, Ramsey County, St. Paul, MN - perhaps a connection? Shawano is basically in a line between Bay City and St. Paul, especially by boat.

I am so thrilled to finally finally Freeman's family!! I'm still looking for more details, but wanted to get this up quickly. Can anyone help me connect any of these folks "officially"??

Thank you!
Kate

Montour/e - Fr>Can>WS>MS- Hi!

Story from Gr-aunt Lillie Montour: Montour(e)s came from Lille, France to Quebec. Moved to Milwaukee, WI. My GGG-Grandfather Freeman (?sp? initials F.P on marriage license) fought during Civil War for the Union, ended up in New Orleans, and stayed in the South, Wesson, Mississippi. Freeman's children were Napoleon Bonepart, (N.B. or "Bones"), Leana, Hattie, George and Charlie.

George returned North, possible went to California and had a turkey farm, but also worked for the Oakland California Railroad.

Hattie married Dr. Noel T. Anders, moved to Texas. Two daughters, Billy and Grace Anders.

Charlie (also sp. Charley) married Lean Terry, moved from Jackson, MS to TX. Two sons: Billy and Teddy Montour.

Leana married B. Parker from Jackson, MS. Two children: Aline and Jack. Designer for Maison Blanche in New Orleans.

Montours in Wisconsin included her Cousin Ella, a nurse with whom she corresponded and exchanged gifts and photographs. Seems the Montours tended to work for railroads.

My grandmother was Hattie Carrie and her sister was Lillie Burnelle Montour, both raised in Mississippi.

I have just recently come across all this - does anyone recognize these Montours????

Looking forward to meeting kin!
Kate

Peter (Pierre) and Mary (Marie) Montour

I looking for information on Peter and Mary Montour. Born Pierre and Marie in Quebec. They were married in St. Regis. They had 11 children including my g-grandfather Edward. They lived in Quebec until about 1850, moving to New York until about 1857 or 1858 when they moved to Monona, Iowa. I believe there were 3 children that stayed behind in either New York or Quebec. I'm hoping someone has information on them. In the 1950's, a priest wrote to my grandfather Eddie Montour and asked for information on his family. So I'm hoping there is some record somewhere. Thanks

Ships Ahoy!

Well, the Montour line is pretty well researched here in North America. I am hoping that someone is looking for the ship that brought Mr. Montour to the New World, also which port he came from and to what port he came to in New France. I am just starting to research this and hope to get back to France. If anyone has any information, please share.

reference to Betty Montour and family

While digging through an old history of Burlington,Bradford county,Pennsylvania, I ran across the account of TomJack,a mingo Indian, whowas born at Logan's Gap,near Juniata. When white began to enter that area he moved to the Susquehanna, just above Forty Fort. There he married Betty Montour,a 3/4 Indian woman. When the other Indians wanted him to join in a massacre ,he moved up the river to Wysaukin(now Wysox),which was a Moravian Mission,at which place he professed religion. At the approach of General Sullivan's expedition,he moved his family to the wilderness of Sugar Creek and remained there until the appearance of more white settlers. Then he removed to the Allegany River, where he died in 1809.His daughter,White Fawn became educated and was a teacher to Indian children in the Allegany region..She never married and died in 1823.In 1836 a monument was erected in her memory by the moravian missionary society,of which she was a member - as were her parents. This comes from a book by Dr David Craft."History of Bradford County 1770-1875" This Bradford County is in Pennsylvania....I wonder if any of these other Montours have any connection with Moravian settlements or missions.....

Madame Montour family

I am trying to find some definitive information on Madame Montour of Pennsylvania fame. She and son Andrew were translators along with Conrad Weiser with negotiations prior to and during the French and Indian Wars for Pennsylvania. According to one account she had a brother/son who married a Delaware at the Water Gap. I have an ancestor, Elizabeth Matonair who supposedly was Indian with red hair. I have read that the Montour's had red hair. Elizabeth was from the Water Gap. I can find no record of any other family with the Matonair spelling or close to it in the time frame and locality.

I am a writer looking for info on a Betty Montour, reputed to have been a Delaware indian in the late 18th century. She was married to another indian named Tom Jack in the Wyoming Valley of NE Pennsylvania, was said to be a moravian convert. They had a daughter who it was reported to have been a missionary to her people and the "mother of her nation" If any of her decendants have information on her, it would be greatly appreciated.
