Can anyone throw any light on a family mystery?
Frederick Montrose(1866), originally known as Frederick Blow Skinn and Frank Montrose (Skinn) (1868) were born in Spilsby, Lincolnshire.
Their parents were James Moses Skinn and Lucy Skinn, nee Blow, who were married in Winstead, County of York in Dec. 1863. James was a Court bailiff and later a court clerk.
All their children were born in Spilsby
A daughter Eliza died, age 1, in 1871.
Lucie Annie died age 11 in 1876 in Salford, Manchester.
Kate Skinn, born 1871, married William Herbert Perks in Prestwich, Manchester on July 17th 1895.
The death of James Moses Skinn in1873 was probably responsible for the dispersal of his widow and her young family.
By the time of the 1981 Census Frank Skinn was living with his paternal aunt - Thirza A. Ward and her husband Thomas Ward in Spilsby. Thomas was a Devonshire man who was the local Registrar and the School Board Accountant.
The widow Lucy Skinn and her son Frederick - by then an Office boy were living at 37 Seedley Grove, Pendleton, Manchester where Lucy was a Domestic Servant. It is not known where Kate was living.
Frederick married Elisabeth Milwain Wilson in Openshaw, Manchester in 1890. He was a Pawn broker and at his marriage gave his name as Frederick Montrose Skinn.
By the time of the 1891 Census it appears that both Frederick and Frank had adopted the surname Montrose but the reasons for this are obscure and none the six children from Frank's marriage to Mary Beatrice Brierley who were born born between Dec. 1901 and Oct. 1917 were aware of it.
In his early years Frank was a commercial traveller who travelled around a lot. One son was born in Preston, 3 children in King's Norton district of Smethwick, and 2 in Manchester where the family settled.
Frank was very involved then with the silent cinema and his wife Beatrice often played the piano accompniment.
It is queried that Frank may have been previously married to Eliza who had two children -Ethel Montrose born 1893 and Florence H. Montrose born 1895.
Frank died in 1936 before I was born.
Frederick and Elizabeth also had several children and at one time lived in Levenshulme, Manchester .
He remarried after Elizabeth's death - in 1918 -to Martha Alexandra Fraser at the Cathedral Parish Church, Manchester where he gave his name as Frederick Montrose, son of James Montrose, a Law Clerk.
If you are related to any of these people I would be interested to hear from you .
I am a direct descendant of Frank and Beatrice Montrose.
