My ancestor was John Moody (b.abt.1795--d.(1840-1850)Greene Co GA). There is a record in the Greene Co Courthouse that indicates that John Moody received a Bounty Land Warrant for service in the War of 1812. I went to the National Archives and unsuccessfully tried to find any record of this bounty land. However, I did find two bounty land warrants for men named John Moody from Georgia. Below is the information from one of them:

Hon Commissioner of Pensions, Washington, DC

Dear Sir,
I will be greatly obliged if you will inform me whether or not John Moody (my father) who was a private in Capt Heath's Company infantry under General Floyd, in the Indian War about 1812-ever had a bounty land warrant issued to him by the U States government or whether or not one was ever issued to me. I was born the 16th Feb 1836 & was a minor in 1855 when the act was passed allowing minors of decd soldiers to draw a land warrant if the soldier had died without drawing one. I feel satisfied my father never got one I made application through an agent for a bounty land warrant by the name of E H Golston & executed to him a full power of attorney to act for me in the services??.
Some time after I gave him the power of atty he wrote me that I was not entitled because I was not a minor in 1855. Since which time I cannot get him to write to me at all, although I have written him several times, assuring him I was a minor
Yours truly
Irby Moody

Hon John C Black, Commissioner

Dear Sir,
Your letter of July 20/85 (which is herewith returned) in reply to mine of 9th July /85 was duly received. The name Dilley Moody in whose name your letter states the land warrant of 160 acres was Issued is not the name of my mother. her name was Dillania Moody widow of John Moody. I was between 8 & 9 years of age when my father died in 1848. My mother died in 1873--My father died in 11 miles of Lumpkin in Stewart County Georgia & my mother died in near Cuthbert Randolph County Georgia. I have never heard of either drawing a land warrant but during the late war heard my mother say she was entitled to a land warrant but of course she could make no application during the war & has never made the application. I will be greatly obliged if you will inform me who made the application? before what officer? who were the witnesses? their names? What state & county was the application made? What time was the application mad & at what time the Land Warrant you speak of was issued?
Yours very Truly
Irby Moody

Troy, Ala December 30th 1885

To Hon Commissioner of Pensions

Dear Sir,
Some time about the 1st Sept la__ I wrote you to know whether Dillania Moody widow of John Moody who was a soldier in the war with Great Britton 1812-14 ever drew a land warrant for his services. The Pension Comr by Wm E McLean Actg Comr replies by letter of 18th Sept 1885 stating that "the declaration upon which land warrant No
75185-160-1855. in the name of Dilley Moody was issued, was dated Stewart County Georgia July 1st 1858 executed before John N Webb JP & attested by Henry W Jones & Thomas Martin. The warrant was sent to John N Webb Florence GA, atty of record" Knowing that my mother had never received any such land warrant & being satisfied that said Webb had forged the application & Power of Atty I wrote to 3 of my brothers living in GA all older than myself & they all agree with me that my mother never got any warrant or authorized any one to get it for her. I re'd a letter from one brother who says that Webb did commence to make such application for her a short time after the death of her husband John Moody & that he took her to said Webb at Florence Ga & she gave him all the names of the sol___ who served with her husband in same Co & the Capt Adam Heath that he then wrote on to find some of the soldiers & he told her that he must have the muster roll or he could not get the warrant. Webb wanted to buy chan___ the clai_ of her & he take the chances to get it. This brother states that he urged his mother not to sell. He Webb then Drew up a paper for her to sign giving him (Webb) authority to draw the warrant, but at the request of this brother she refused to do so & he is satisfied she never did at any time.
I am satisfied the whole thing was a forgery--said Webb is still living & resides in Ft Gaines Georgia. Could not the US Government send a detective agent to investigate the forgery in this case? I think it can be proved. I am informed by reliable authority that it is believed many similar forgeries have been committed of similar claims.
The name in which said warrant was issued was not in fact my mother--her name was Dillania Moody. The warrant has it Dilley Moody.
I have no doubt but it was intended for my mother, but she could not write her name. I would be glad if you would inform me whether or not any application was ever made in my said mother's name for pension or for bounty. Please let me hear from you at your earliest convenience. If my mother never received said warrant I am entitled by virtue of being under age in 1855.
Yours truly
Irby Moody
