Jessie O'Malley nee Moody Mayo - Notts, UK. 1881 - 1914

Hi. Looking for info on my great grandmother Jessie Moody (b 1881 s 1914). Jessie married Patrick O'Malley (b 1874 d 1946). Patrick is from West port, County Mayo. Jessie and Patrick met in Ireland (County Mayo?) the O'Malleys didn't want them to marry as Jessie was apparently an illegitimate child of a wealthy landowner. Jessie and Patrick came over to Nottinghamshire, UK possibly as it was the only way they could be together. I'm not sure if they married in Ireland or England, I can't find any English marriage records for them. Jessie and Patrick had 4 boys, Hubert b 1905, Austin b 1905, Edward b 1907 and Edward b 1911. Jessie died at only 33 years of age and Patrick went on to marry Ada Barnes. I'm really struggling to find info on Jessie, I have her death cert and know she died in Nottingham Workhouse in Bagthorpe, but I would really like to find out about her family and past. I can't find her birth certficate, or marriage cert. I'm not sure if Moody was her mother's name or that of her fathers, as her parents were not married I'm not sure. I believe she is Irish. Hopefully someone can help me. Thanks.

John MOODY b.c1835 poss. Co. Antrim, Nor. Ire. m. Mary Ann LESLIE and others

I am searching for information on the Parents of a John MOODY b.c1835 who married a Mary Ann LESLIE b.1835 daug. of John Leslie who also had a son named Thomas Leslie, all possibly from the Balnamore/Ballymoney, Co. Antrim area of Nor. Ireland. On John and Mary Ann's marriage record from the St. James Church of Ballymoney in 1856, John MOODY was listed as being "of Balnamore". John and Mary Ann Leslie MOODY had 7 children - John, Mary Jane, James, Margaret Annie, Martha, Ellen and Thomas MOODY.

This family is part of our Ydna Moody family and I am trying to see if Perhaps this John is related more closely to an earlier Ydna MOODY ancestor of ours Thomas MOODY b.c1710 in/of Aghadowey (area) of Co. Londonderry, Nor. Ireland who married Jean McQUISTON daugh of Benj.McQuiston.
Thomas and Jean came to America in c1735 landing at New Castle, DE and removing briefly to PA before moving again to Guilford Co., NC.

John and Mary Ann Leslie MOODY's son James MOODY b. 1862/63 married Margaret LYNCH (daug. of Wm. Lynch and Mary Ann/Margaret McCaghen(various spellings), and they too came to PA but in the later 1800's, removing to the Northwestern part of the state.

I know these early families who were from the same places in Nor. Ireland often followed other family members to the same areas in Nor. America as well, so I am wondering if perhaps anyone knows if there was a Lineage Line between this early Thomas MOODY b.c1710 of Co. L'derry and this John MOODY b.c1835 of Co. Antrim who both have ties to PA.

We also have another early Ydna Moody whose family came from Ireland to PA... Samuel MOODY and wife known only as "Martha". They were in PA by c1820 I believe and Samuel was a linen weaver by trade.

I am trying to work out if there is any "within reach" lineage line between these MOODY's which I believe there is, since these 3 particular families all lived in Nor. Ireland and all came to PA between 1735 and the 1880's.

If anyone can help out I would be most greatful.
Thank You.

Colonel William Lewis Moody obituary

William Lewis Moody
Galveston Daily News (Galveston, Texas)
July 18, 1920

Colonel W. L. Moody Dies At Residence

Conspicuous in Banking and Commercial Interests;
Funeral Today

Colonel William Lewis Moody, 92 years old, a resident of Galveston since 1866 and prominent in banking, cotton factorage and commercial circles of the city, died yesterday afternoon at 12:30 o’clock at the family residence, 1304 Twenty-third street, following a brief illness. As president of the banking institution which bears his name, W. L. Moody & Co., together with the Galveston Compress and Warehouse Company and the W. L. Moody Cotton Company and various other interests, both here, and elsewhere, Colonel Moody has been a conspicuous figure in the financial world of Galveston.

Funeral services will be held from the residence this afternoon at 4 o’clock under the auspices of San Felipe de Austin Commandery No. 1, Knights Templar, of which organization Colonel Moody was the oldest member. He affiliated with the commandery in Galveston April 10, 1868. Interment will be in Cahill Cemetery.

Colonel Moody is survived by his wife, Mrs. Pherabe Moody; one son, W. L. Moody Jr., and one daughter, Mrs. Sealy Hutchings. His eldest son, Frank B. Moody, preceded his father in death a few years ago. He is also survived by a number of grandchildren, including William Moody III, Shearn Moody, Mrs. Edwin Clyde Northen, Mrs. Clarke W. Thompson, children of W. L. Moody, Jr.; Mrs. Robert Clarke, daughter of the late F. B. Moody, and Miss Mary Moody Hutchings, Miss Laura Hutchings, Miss Elizabeth Hutchings, John H. Hutchings, William Moody Hutchings, Sealy Hutchings Jr. and Robert Hutchings, children of Mrs. Sealy Hutchings.

William Lewis Moody, the son of Jameson and Mary Susan Moody, was born in Essex County, Va., May 19, 1828. When 2 years old his parents moved to Chesterfield County, Va., where he was reared and received his preliminary education. When ready for college he entered the University of Virginia graduating at the end of his third term. Colonel Moody came to Texas as the age of 28 and settled in Freestone County, at Fairfield. Educated as a lawyer, taking his degree at the University of Virginia, prior to coming to Texas, he engaged but a brief period in the practice of his profession when he embarked in the mercantile business. In this enterprise he met with success, laying the foundation of W. L. Moody & Co., his two brothers, David _. Moody and Leroy F. Moody, being his partners.

Colonel Moody married Miss Pherabe Elizabeth Bradley, daughter of Francis Meriwether Bradley and Sillah Pherabe Bradley, January 19, 1860, in Freestone County. Of this union six children were born, two of whom survived, including W. L. Moody Jr. and Mrs. Sealy Hutchings.

Civil War Record
In 1861, almost immediately on the succession of Texas, he closed and abandoned a prosperous business and true to the blood of a real Virginian and the patriotism of a chivalrous Southerner, he organized one of the first companies in Texas, and was elected captain in Company G. Seventh Texas infantry Regiment at Marshall, Tex., being mustered into service Oct. 2, 1861. Colonel Moody led his men immediately to the battle____ of Kentucky, where he steadily advanced. Later he was made a prisoner at Fort Donaldson, and spent six months in the Federal prisons of Camp Douglas, Camp Chase and Johnson’s Island.

During September, 1862, the prisoners were exchanged and the Seventh Texas Regiment was sent to Clinton, Miss. to prepare for active service again. Captain Moody was made lieutenant colonel of the regiment, which was assigned to _____ in General Gregg’s brigade at Fort Hudson, La. Afterward the regiment was sent to Mississippi where it saw much active service. Soon after Colonel Moody was wounded at Jackson, July 19, so seriously that he was incapacitated from active service in the field. The following spring he was promoted to a full Colonel and assigned to post duty at Austin, Tex., where he remained until the end of the war.

In 1864, Colonel Moody came to Galveston and engaged in the cotton factorage business, where he established the commercial house of W. L. & F. L. Moody. This firm was succeeded by Moody, Bradley & Co. and later by Moody & Jamison, with a branch house in New York. This partnership was dissolved in 1877, W. L. Moody and the late Frank B. Moody being admitted as members of the firm under the name of W. L. Moody & Co.

Colonel Moody was a member of the immortal fourteenth legislature of Texas, known as the reconstruction legislature, in 1874-1875. His was recognized as one of the leading spirits of that history making period. He helped to elect to office Governor Richard Coke of Texas and it was said of him that he was to Coke what Stonewall Jackson was to Lee, his right arm. He was appointed a member of a joint committee to investigate and report on the election returns of the governor and lieutenant governor during the contest between the thirteenth and fourteenth legislature.

During Coke’s administration the governor gave a full explanation of the financial condition of the state and commended the successful efforts of Colonel Moody and others in realizing a large amount of money from the bonds of the state that had been hypothecated to parties in New York and the bonds were claimed by parties in Europe. It was at this time that he was appointed by Governor Coke as financial agent of the state of Texas.

Colonel Moody has always been too modest to refer to his devotion to the best interests of his country or to the part he has had in the business and financial betterment of Texas and in strengthening its fabric of finance.

In his services to the community as chairman of the Galveston deep water committee he accomplished considerable in 1882, spending much of his time in Washington in the interest of the development of a deep water port on the Texas coast.

But it is in the history of the Galveston Cotton Exchange, which he organized and served as its president for many consecutive terms, that he is perhaps better known. He was the presiding officer at its initial meeting, giving to the organization the same close attention and unflagging interest that he gave to his own affairs.
I am looking for a David Moody who emigrated from Ireland. His brother William also emigrated and was living in New York in 1845. William returned to Ireland in and around 1860. David had a son David William and a daughter Gertrude Merl or Murl (married name perhaps). They were living in U.S. in 1880. I have no idea whereabouts. Anyone out there with Irish connections?

searching for John MOODY b.c1831 Poss. in the Balnamore, Co. Antrim, IRE area

I am searching for more info on a John MOODY b.c1831 POSSIBLY in the Balnamore, Co. Antrim, Nor. Ireland area. His wife's name is unknown to me at this time. He had a son named James MOODY however that was born in 1863. He married on Dec. 24, 1883 to MaryAnn LYNCH daughter of Wm. Lynch and Margaret STEWART/Stuart.
In their marriage record from PRONI it states that Mary Ann was 7 years older than James. They were both Presbyterian's. John MOODY was a farmer and his son James was a millworker. This was a first marriage for both James and Mary Ann.
Mary Ann stated that she lived in Coldagh. The church in which they were married in was located in Ballymoney, Co. Antrim. (Presbyterian Church)

Any info at all on John MOODY the father of this James would be greatly appreciated as they are part of our Ydna family tree. My apologies for so little info about this John MOODY, but that's all there was from the Marriage record...the Mother's name was not given.
Thank You.

Thomas Robert John William Moody

I am trying to document the lineage from Thomas Moody ca 1625 England, Robert Moody Sr.ca 1655 VA, Robert Moody Jr. ca 1697 VA, John Moody ca 1723 VA, William ca 1740 NC. I have found evidence of Thomas to son Samuel in VA and of Robert Sr. to son Daniel and clustered names of Robert Jr. and John Moody in Granville Co, NC. This area of Granville Co became in turn Bute and then Franklin counties. Much of the real estate dealings are along the North Carolina Tar River at various locations including Buffalo Creek, Jumping River or Creek, and Cypress Creek or Swamp areas. The leap from these men to William in orange and then Chatham counties is not well documented in my research. In reading the many trees and postings of this line, I have determined (guessed) that the major original source is The Moody family of western North Carolina and scattered descendants / researched as a Moody family project ; written and compiled by Frances Moody Nadeau. I cannot find a copy of this book. Is there anyone who has or who has seen the book who can tell me the nature of documentation in the book for the line?

MOODY's/Moodie's of Darlington Co., SC area -

Because I cannot find my own Moody lineage line back any further than my 5th grt. grandparents James MOODY (b.c1750 or Before but Not after c1755) and Elizabeth DONALD/Donnell who were married in Jan. 1774 Buxton, York Co., Maine, I am have been researching the lineage lines of our Known Ydna Moody cousins.
The MOODY's of Darlington Co., SC to Covington Co., AL (and other nearby counties...Dale, Coffee etc.), are all part of our now growing Genetically linked MOODY family.

From my own searching around (I'm sure others have run into these folks before too), I found an early mention of a Gilbert MOODIE (spelled in the original Scottish spelling of our last name) who was born sometime around c1750 who enlisted into the 4th Regt. of the SC line during the Rev. War in Dec. of 1775.
Because of his name I feel quite certain he was a Brother to John MOODY/Moodie b.c1750 who is our Known Ydna line.
This John's son John Moody, Jr. named a son Gilbert Gordon MOODY and I suspect it was in honor of his Uncle.
I also believe that GORDON was a family name ~Possibly~ being John Moody (b.c1750) Mother's maiden name.

Again due to extensive research over the last several months, I found a Dr. James MOODIE/Mudie (found spelled both ways in the records) of Jamaica who was from the Edinburgh, Scotland area, whose daughter Janet MOODIE/Mudie married Dr. William KEITH whose family lived in the Pickens Co., SC area. From SC Court records (public records), I found that the KEITH's were somehow linked to the MOODIE's of Charleston, SC through marriage.

In turn, some of the linking families of the Charleston, SC area have intermarried with the families of our Darlington Co., SC lines. I do not believe this is by accident, I think these families had been intermarrying for quite some time as I have found many of these same names in the old Barbados (Caribbean Island records going back to the 1600's when the Scots were banished to the Islands...the America's for religious rebellious reasons of the times or because some of them had committed crimes etc.), and I have also seen many of these same surnames intermarried in the old Scottish records (OPR's...old parish records), as well as in the Nor. Ireland records (the ones that still exist anyway).

I have tried to track these same family surnames whenever possible and have been quite surprised to see them all clumped together in the same areas of Scotland, Nor. Ireland and America...from the earlier records that is. Once rapid transportation became available (trains, cars etc.) families spread out all over the U.S. and the same clans of families were not as heavily intermarried anymore.

The Diaries of Evan PUGH (some have his last name as Gough??), also make a statement that John MOODY b.c1750 or before, aka John 1 Moody, that his Father's name ~MIGHT~ have been James MOODY. If this is true, then Perhaps he was a descendant of the Dr. James MOODIE of Jamaica.
This is Purely a guess on my part, but since so many of the families that intermarried with the MOODY's/Moodie's of SC are found in the old Barbados VR's, and because MUDIE's were known to live in the Jamaica/Puerto Rico area dating a good while back, I believe it is quite possible that some of them could be our Ydna lineage line.

Briefly I will say that our Ydna Haplogroup is a known Norwegian line that most likely came from Norway to Scotland during the early Viking raids. Because the MOODIE's of Hoy, Orkney, Scotland also claim to be descendants of an early Norwegian line (although the line that they claim to be descended from has now been pretty much disputed, but they still most likely do descend from a Norse line), and because we are MOODY's/Moodie's with a Norse Ydna signature and we now have about 10 families (8 of them MOODY's and 2 are of other surnames but who are Very Closely matched to us via Ydna results, AND both of their early families have Duplin and Johnston Co., NC links and Darlington and Charleston Co., SC links), it is believed that ~Perhaps~ somewhere in their male lines an Adoption took place OR a female of their surname had a male child born out of wedlock to a MOODY father, but the mother gave their sons their own family names).

Anyway, it is all very twisted and intermingled but the connections Do appear to be there.
If anyone ever finds a link (his parents or siblings, wife etc.) to this Gilbert MOODIE of the Cheraws Dist., SC who enlisted into the SC Rev. War line in Dec. 1775, Please leave a message or email me.
We are making some progress with our Ydna MOODY/Moodie family lines but the more help the better.
Thank You for anything at all.

The sister's name is Jodie Moody McClure and according to the death certificate, her daughter, Helen Potts, was the informant. At the time of her death, Jodie lived in Bridgeport, Wise County, Texas. She died 2/6/1975. Her parents were Robert M. Moody & Susan M. McClairen. The brother's name was Will Moody from Electra, Wichita County, Texas. He died 8/16/1963 showing the informant as Georgia Moody. My husband's grandfather was Oma Dee Moody. I am trying to find any relatives of either person. I continue to hit a road block trying to find either Robert or Susan. I have seen Susan's name as McClearn (as shown on Will's death certificate).

MOODY's from Darlington Co., SC to Covington Co., AL -

I am very new at researching this branch of the Moody's descended from the John line of Darlington Co., SC.
We now have a Ydna match to this line of Moody's so that makes them part of my Genetic family so am interested in learning as much as I can about them.
I don't even know where to begin, but am trying to learn if Anyone out there has knowledge that our earliest Moody's came over from Scotland? I am absolutely convinced they did because we share NO Ydna with any of the loads of Moody's who come from England. Moody is not a native name to Ireland but about 5 of our small group of Ydna Moody cousin's families came to America from Northern Ireland (earliest ancestor Thomas Moody b.c1710 Co. L'derry, Ireland who married 1st to Jean McQUISTON/McCuiston (as the name is seen more commonly spelled in the South).

Now that we have this link to the Darlington Co., SC MOODY's who also seem to link to the Robert Moody & Ester line of Marion Co., SC, (several members of both of these families went to Covington Co., AL and other nearby surrounding or connecting counties in So. AL), I am trying to find out more info about them.
If anyone can help I would be most greatful.
Thank You.
Marie Louise Moody is the child of Louis Preston Moody and Willi Jo DeLoach Moody.

Louise had a daughter named Linda I think in the early to mid 1940's. Linda was later adopted by her aunt, Maude DeLoach Barnes.

Louise married a man named Simon Sable (Sabel?) in Savannah, GA. They had two daughters, Sadie and Christine. They divorced and Simon had custody of the girls. I think Simon was a barber. Last thing anyone knew, they were living in the Savannah GA area.

Louise died of pneumonia in 1971 in New York City, but was brought home and buried in Little Flock Cemetery in Tattnall County, GA

ANY information would be greatly appreciated.
If you are a Moody of Caucasion heritage and know that your ancestors owned slaves, you can help African Americans by making information available to them via message boards. It is an ugly part of our history, but the truth is that most African Americans have to research two histories, their own and the slaveowners of their ancestors. This is the greatest gift you can give to people who worked the land for nothing for 200 years.

Major Moody lines in the US?

I once read a message from the MOODY message board.. that there are FOUR major Moody lines in the US, the response was from a serious researcher who had been studying the Moody lines for numerous years, as I recall the lines were:
NORTHERN Line - SOUTHERN Line - BLACK Line and I don't recall the forth?
I do recall from this researchers response that the northern never went south and the southern never north as they came to this country...my interest is the late 1700's...early 1800's.
Can anyone clarify this for me?
Geographically where would the dividing line have been?
I first find my line in Barbour Co WV in 1825 would this be considered the sourthern line?
Thank you..
Moodys from Greenbrier County, WV

Searching for descendants of Charles Hue/Hugh Moody from Greenbrier County, WV. I believe he had two families, as he was much older than his second wife (Willie Crone), and one census record I have lists a Charles Sheppard as his son-in-law, though that person is a number of years older than his wife. That is my basis for him having had a previous family. Any help would be greatly appreicated.

He was born in TN and died in Kaufman county Texas (probably near Elmo or Able Springs). He is the father of James A. Moody. It is posible that his father's name is Henry. Any info would be great!

Thanks,

Susan

I've hit a roadblock trying to track down any info about my GGG Grandfather. I have no record of him being in TN, although several of his children were born there. I don't know where in NC he is from, and I assume that he died in Tishomingo County, MS, as the last mention of him and his wife Catherine that I've found is on the 1870 MS census. His sons moved on to other parts---Robert to CA, John C. to TX, etc., but any more info on John himself would be deeply appreciated.

Death of Judge James C Moody St. Louis

Death of James C. Moody

Judge James C. Moody, formerly of the law firm of Moody & Hillyer of this city, died at St. Louis, night before last, aged 63 years. HIs body will arrive in this city on the 7 o'clock train this evening, and will be buried to-marrow at 9 o'clock a.m. Mr. Moody was at the time of his residence here a prominent lawyer, and has been pursuing his profession in St. Louis, for some years.
Judge Moody was a member of the legislature from this county, at one time, and while there got into a quarrel with Col. Horace Heffren, resulting in a challenge and acceptance to fight a duel at Covington, Ky. Friends however interferred, and caused their arrest and prevented the settlment of the difficulty according to the honorable code of murder.
If we remember correctly the difficulty was adjusted and the parties became friends.

Source: New Albany ledger 1-08-1880
Page 4 C-2

Someone had posted a tree that shows her as marrying John Franklin Moody after her first husband died.

I thought I had tracked her as a widow through the 1930 census, so now I'm worried that I tracked the wrong person.

Does anyone have information that could confirm her marriage to Moody?
Israel Moody Nova Scotia

I think someone is looking for a connection with the Moody (Ulster-Scot)families in Nova Scotia. If any help: The 3rd son of John Alexander Moody of Gortmore Hall,Magilligan NI and Priscilla Dick of Lenamore was Israel Moody b.1788, d.1867 Nova Scotia Ca. An internet search which matches Israel's DOB and parent's names, says he married Elizabeth Caskey and their children were: Nancy Anne, William, Elizabeth, Robert, John, James, Margaret, Rachel Rebecca. Israel is a gt.++++ uncle; brother of my gt.+++ grandfather (John Moody b.1774).His older brother Solomon may have gone to NS first. They are descendants of one of 3 Moody brothers who went from Fyfe to NI following the Covenantry Wars in Scot (mid 1600s). Family history says 2 settled in Magilligan; one "went further South" [which may have meant just down the road! One did not marry. So many Moodys appeared in the area within the next generation - relatives? MANY went to N.America and later to Aus.
Cheers from Diana in NZ (Ca.UK)

searching for Dr. James MOODY 1772 Edinburgh Univ. Medical grad.

I am searching for a Dr. James MOODY who was an Edinburgh Univ. in Scotland medical graduate in 1772 (yes "1772").
All I know is that he was listed as being "from Ireland".
All of our Ydna Moody cousins were from Northern Ireland and married into other Scottish families so I Highly suspect that our MOODY name was once spelled MOODIE or Mudie before being changed over to the more common English spelling of Moody in Northern Ireland.
I am searching for Any James MOODY's of any spelling at this point. My 5th grt. grandfather was a James MOODY born c1750 or BEFORE, who shows up out of nowhere in Jan 1774 when he married my 5th grt. grandmother Elizabeth DONALD (as its spelled on their marriage record but commonly found spelled as Donnell/Dunnell in Maine and NC), in York Co., Maine.
After they married, they disappeared off the map. I can find no records of them anywhere, but I do know they had 3 children...Sarah, James and Joseph MOODY all born between 1774 and c1781.
This "Dr. James Moody" who graduated from Edinburgh in 1772 fits very well to be a good candidate as my 5th grt. grandfather as many of the medical students I have been told did come to America to find work.
This could explain why my James shows up out of nowhere.
He may have moved his family anywhere in Nor. America for all I know. I have concentrated soley on the New England and Canadian areas because that was the area in which they were married, but am also just recently starting to research the South for them as well.
Our Ydna Moody cousins so far all have ties to Nor. Ireland and we do Not match ydna with any of the Numerously tested "English" MOODY's. The only other place on the globe where the surname of Moody/Moodie/Mudie is as commonly found as England is in Scotland and I have believed for years that our Moody family was originally from there. Our earliest known ancestors from Northern Ireland married into other Scottish families and continued that tradition even after they came to Nor. America for many generations after.
Our Ydna reports show that we share Ydna with mostly other Scottish names and again I believe that is showing us a pattern of what "clans" of folks they were living with in the Very Earliest days of their ydna beginnings and as surnames evolved from various things (types of work that men did, places where folks lived etc.), these names were still showing up in our family trees hundreds and thousands of years later.
Our Ydna has shown that we are of a specific I1a-N (Norse) haplogroup and it is highly likely that our earliest known ancestors were among those Norwegian Vikings who settled in places like Orkney, Scotland and Caithness, Scotland or Shetland, Scotland etc. in the 700's when the Norse Vikings ruled over those areas of Northern Scotland.
They also had a very large settlement in Dublin, Ireland and again we could have been in Ireland since those settlements too, but due to the Heavy influence of Scots in all of our Ydna cousins genealogies, I firmly believe our MOODY's (Moodie's) were in Scotland prior to being in Nor. Ireland and before coming to America.
If anyone has any information on a Dr. James MOODY who would have been born sometime Before 1750 but probably not before c1730 who graduated from Edinburgh, Scotland Univ. in 1772, I would be Most greatful for the help.
Thank You.

MOODY family of North Carolina

My great-greatgrandfather was Robert MOODY, married to Bethsheba (possibly Bathsheba) CHAMBERS, daughter of Elijah CHAMBERS. Before migrating to Kansas in the latter part of the 19th century, they resided in Collettsville, Caldwell County, NC. I have no information prior to this. I do, however, have data on the family after their migration to KS. Any additional information is greatly appreciated...this appears to be my brick wall. Thank you.
Jane (Fulton) Taylor
Wichita, KS
