I found out that I could easily go down the wrong track about *which* George Mountain is connected to our family.

Our George Mountain was the son of Benjamin Mountain who had immigrated from his father's farm in Prince Edward Island in the early 1800s. George Mountain established a farm on the banks of the Miramichi River in New Brunswick at Gray Rapids near Blackville, NB.

If this connection seems valid to you, I can locate a picture of Benjamin's homestead and that of George (undergoing renovation).
Eric

Re: Mooers/Clark

In my database, I have an individual listed as "Timothy I. Mooers" who apparently was born about 1784. The Probate records in Penobscot county Maine show his death as February 1, 1847. At the time of his death, he was married to "Abigail Trim" (according the the Probate records) and his son, John E. Mooers was appointed as administrator of the Estate. Three other children are mentioned in the Probate records but not named. Timothy had a fifty acre farm in Corinth, Maine. Within two years of of Timothy's death, the farm was sold. Timothy is buried in the Corinthian Cemetery in Corinth but no other members are buried there.

I strongly believe that Timothy's son, John E. Mooers, is the same John Edmund Mooers who lived in California and died in Seattle, Washington. John Edmund was born on July 8, 1825 in Old Town, Maine (also in Penobscot County) and died in 1910. Another son, Manander Orssealyer Mooers, born about 1830 and he died in California on December 23, 1924. John Edmund and Manander are shown in census as being in the same communities in California. Before moving to California sometime between 1870 and 1880, Manander lived (in 1870) with his wife Mary in Charleston, Penobscot County, Maine. Manander served in Company :E: of the 22nd Maine in the Civil War. Pension records lists Mandander's widow as "Emma J. Mooers".

I have not yet been able to locate Timothy's parents; neither have I verified the "Abilgail Trim" or her parents.

I have eight other Timothy Mooers born between 1763 and 1837. However none show a marriage to a Clark.

Not sure if this connects, but a Timothy Mooers married to an Abigail in Penobscot County, Maine, not far north of Montville, seems like a close hit. BTW, I did try briefly to find "Trim" family but did not locate any to connect.

Mooers/Clark

I am trying to find information on Abigail Clark and Timothy J. Mooers, who were married 27 Jul 1820 in Montville,Waldo Co., ME. The 1820 census has Timothy J. Moors as head of family with a male 16-26 and two females, 16-26 and 45 & c. I am trying to verify information that Abigail's parents were Stephen and Hannah Clark. There was a Stephen Clark that lived in Montville at the time. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

T McGarvey

I do not have a birth or death date for Johnston. I was told the church where the family records were kept on PEI burnt. It is believed that Johnston died before 1850, as his wife, Jerusha and children are found in the 1850 Calais census without him. His name has been found spelled 3 different ways.

Johnston- Land grant petition
Johnson- marriage record
Johnathan- Birth record of son Stephen

The Mooers line that Sarah and Jerusha are from traces back to the Rowley and Newbury, MA area. It goes back to Peter Mooers and Mary Pearson. Rowley vital records list the following variations of the surname, MOORE, Moers, Mooers, Moores, Moors.

A mountain cousin gave me a copy of part of a handwritten manucript that says Sarah's family lived near Moores Brook, between Doaktown and Blackville. Sarah and Jerusha were the daughters of Nathaniel Mooers and Rebecca Mitchell.

The book Over the Portage by William R. MacKinnon, Jr gives information on the Mooers family.

Kyla Sandberg
Haverhill, MA

Johnston? Good. perhaps you could fill in a few blanks for me. do you have his birth date? I have seen his name as Johnson in one place and Johnston in another. Can you confirm "Johnston"?
Yes, brother Benjamin moved to Blackville, NB and married Sarah Moores (somewhat confirmed that the family lived in Moores Brook (at or near Moores Mills, NB). I am going with "Moores" as the real name although "Mooers" seems to be a phoenetic alternative.

Eric

I saw your recent post about George Mountain. I have a picture of a George Mountain (the photo also lists him as "from out west"). I can send to you a Picasa shot. I have a bunch of pictures from the Mooers, Stanchfield, Daggetts from Milo. Many of the pictures were taken from 1870 to 1920s. I am related through the Edwin Daggett line, but these photos were all marked by his wife Cora Mooers Daggett. I have worked hard to further id many of the characters and track down their story. Most of the pictures are of folks not directly related to me. I believe George Mountain is just one of those folks.
Best,
Christopher Johnson
arating@roadrunner.com
Bucksport, ME.
I am also researching those pertinent parts of the Mountain family and have accumulated some good information and have taken pictures while on a recent trip to PEI and New Brunswick.
George Allison Mountain married Rebecca Ann Sullivan.
I have information and pictures on his father and his children. They were born and grew up in Blackville, New Brunswick. If you are still interested, let me know.

I have two spellings for Sarah Moores or Sarah Mooers in my research. It looks like she was born at a place now called Moores Mills, New Brunswick. I am thinking that her name should have been spelled "Moores". I have a photo of the gravestone of Benjamin and Sarah from Blackville.

My family descened from George Allison Mountain.

Eric Russell
North Vancouver, BC, Canada

Hi Dan,
I found Timothy J. Moors on the 1820 Montville, Lincoln Co., ME census. On the 1830 Corinth, Penobscot Co.,ME census the following was listed: Timothy J. Mooers,Males: 1 (-5 yrs), 1 (5-10), 1 (10-15), 1 (15-20), 1 (40-50), Females: 1 (15-20), 1 (30-40).

On the 1850 census, Bradford, Penobscot Co., ME: Abigail Moores 48, Stephen 18 "occupation - cooker", and Menander 11.

1860 census, Yreka Township, Siskiyou Co., Ca: Stephen Moores 27, miner, living with 5 other men in house. We know that John E. Mooers was in Siskiyou Co. also by 1870, at least.

1860 census, Charleston, Penobscot Co., ME: James R. Trim 38 farmer, Mary 38 wife, Georgianna 11, Austen W. 9, Frank 3/12, Joseph Treat 66 shopkeeper, Abigail Treat 59 wife, Winfield S. 15 Choreboy, Menander Mooers 20 F.Laborer

1870 Corinth, Penobscot Co., ME: Trim, James R. 48 farmer, Mary 48 keeping house, Georgianna 21 at home, Austin W. 19 farm laborer, Mooers, Abigail 70

1880 Corinth, Penobscot Co., ME: Trim, Jas. R. 57 farmer, Mary 58 wife keeping house

1900 Corinth, Penobscot Co, ME: Trim, Mary head May 1822, 78, Wid; Mooers, Stephen C. brother Dec 1832 67

So Stephen and Mary are brother and sister to Menander and John E. Mooers. We are still missing one child. It also gives us some other towns to look for information. Joseph Treat had a wife named Abigail. However, I think this seems to be a coincidence until proven otherwise.

I would dearly love a copy of the probate for Timothy and would be willing to pay postage if you would be willing to send me one. Thank you! Hope this helps some.

Trina

Thanks so much for the information. When we have the family reunion next week I hope to get more information from the King family bible and several individuals there. I know John Edmund Mooers was said to be born in Old Town, but I don't have a birth record yet. Was the town called Milo earlier? If it was a small town, we probably are related! I'll stay in touch with whatever information I come up with!

Charles Edmund Mooers

I am descended from the Charles Edmund Mooers line through Fred James Mooers, one of the nine children. I know his father was John Edmund Mooers, born 8 Jul 1825 in Maine. He was married to Mary Jane Cooley b. abt. 1833. I can't seem to locate their parents! Also Mary Jane was born in NY according to both the 1870 & 1880 censuses. Guess these would be correct. Does anyone have a line on any information on John Edmund Mooers? Thanks ahead of time for any help!

Thank yo so much, Dan, for the history of the Mooers clan. At least it gives me a directio in which to look. Like you, I had come to the conclusion, just by the names given, that it was likely Timothy came from the Hampshire Mooers group from Samuel. Sooner or later I hope to stumble across the right Timothy. Members of my family kept telling me about "Dan" having information, but I could not seem to get in touch with you.
Re: Timothy J. Mooers

Not too long ago I was doing research in Penobscot County and came across the probate records of Timothy J. Mooers. In my mind there was no questions that Timothy was the father of both John Edmund Mooers and Menander Mooers.

I cannot find the parents of Timothy Mooers, but there are many possibilities.

The Mooers settled in Maine from at least three different directions, each of which probably traces their roots back to Edmund Mooers (Moores), the immigrant ancestor in Newbury, Massachusetts.

Most of the Mooers in Aroostook County Maine (which includes my family) come through Peter Mooers who was a pre-loyalist who left eastern Masssachusetts around 1740-1750 and settled in New Brunswick. Many of his descendents left New Brunswick about a decade after the great fire and settled in northern Maine in the 1840 and 1850s. I do not know of any Timothy's in that group.

The Mooers is central Maine came from the New Brunswick Mooers, but also came through another branch that moved from Massachusetts into New Hampshire and then some into central Maine. I general refer to this as the Samuel Mooers branch, who had settled in and became a prominent citizen of Candia, New Hampshire. His son, Peter, and other sons, settled in Vienna, Maine, which another son, Samuel, went to Montville, Maine, and a son, Timothy, went to Readfield, Maine. There are a lot of Timothys in this branch, and I would bet that Menander and John E's father probably came through this branch. The names John and Edmund were popular in the Smauel Mooers branch.

The Mooers around the Gardiner area of Maine came through another branch, which I call the Nantucket Mooers. A branch of the family (Jonathan Mooers) left Newbury and settled on Nantucket Island in Massachusetts. They were Quakers, sea captains, and some very famous. Eventually all the Mooers descendents left Nantucket, with one group coming up the Kennebec River (another up the Hudson) and settling just south of Gardiner, Maine, where many remain today. Some of that branch moved north to Vasselboro and one moved to Ashland, Maine (making it confusing with the New Brunswick Mooers). In the 1700 and early 1800s, the popular names in this branch were Jonathan, William and Robert, with a few Obeds thrown in.

There also is what I call the York County Mooers. Genrally the Mooers in York County Maine came through the Samuel Mooers branch of Candia. In later genrations several became mill superintendents, which seems the reason some come to southern Maine in the late 1800s.

Of course it becomes even a little more difficult to sort out the West Coast Mooers, as member from all the branches moved west.

Sorry I could not pin point Timothy J. for you but, like you, I keep looking.

Dan Mooers

Dan Mooers
