Hercules Mooney is my gr-gr-gr-gr-gr-grandfather. I do not know if this is true or not because I have know way of proving it. My grandmother told me that the story was that he fell in love with royalty in Ireland and ran into some trouble. At that point the last name was Moon and changed when he arrived in the United States.

Hi I am curious did you ever find any information on Kitty Jane Miller? I am doing some research on my grandmother and came across a young Kitty Jane Miller whose uncle, a Doctor Miller of Pittsburgh PA owned a plantation in Hephzibah Georgia around 1910-1916. This might be a dead end but I thought I'd try it and see.

Thanks.

Hi Paul, on the origin of our surname, I wonder if you know the Gaelic legend of 'Maonach' who was struck dumb as a little boy at the shock of seeing his father the king of Munster murdered by his uncle? The boy had to flee to France but returned as a warrior with a fleet of ships and recovered the crown.

I've collected quite a bit of information since that post. I did find out that that Francis Mooney b. 24 Feb 1879 Concord NH d. 11 Jun 1958 Fall River, MA. It seems Francis' Father Daniel Mooney b. 8 Nov 1846 Massachusets d 21 Aug 1903 Pawtucket, RI. moved to Concord NH for a brief period of time before moving to Pawtucket. I have found most of the family in Pawtucket. My g-grandfather Francis and down my direct line are all from Fall River. I have not been able to make a connection to any of the other Mooney's in Fall River. Do you have any connection with the Pawtucket RI Mooneys?

Thanks for your response,
Kathy (Mooney) George

I'm new to ancestral search, but am trying to help my husband locate the branch of the family that remained in Ireland when his great-great grandfather (Edward Mooney circa 1855 descendant of Patrick Neil Mooney and Elizabeth McNaughlin) and great-great-grandmother (Catherine Dougherty 1832) immigrated to Montana.

Until the past 10 years or so, his Aunt Katherine (89 yrs and daughter of Daniel Francis and Lucy Morris)had received correspondence from a Patrick Mooney in Malin Head, but she now believes that he has past.

If anyone could help complete the Ireland side of his tree or provide information, we'd be very grateful.

Thanks
dink

I am a Mooney by birth and quite agree with you on the name. It is very difficult here in UK to find anyone, I just keep hitting brick walls. You are quite right about marriages within the family, My g grandfather also married my g grandmothers sisters in 1912 after she died. I am having great difficulty in finding where in Ireland my ancestors even came from as there are not many records left. and there are so many Mooneys with the same Christian names.

Patrick Mooney from County Longford born about 1822

I'm looking for information on an ancestor named Patrick Mooney who I think came from Lanesborough in County Longford. From census records I think he was born about 1822. He married Ann McCune(think that was her last name) and I first find them in Williamburg, New York and then in San Francisco. They have 7 children. Mary T (marries Patrick Connor). Ann (becomes a nun), Catherine M. (marries John N. VonAhnen, Alice (marries Martin Anderson and maybe others), Ellen F,
Joseph David and Patrick H.
I am looking to see if Patrick connects to any other Mooney families on this board. Also if anyone knows any other information on this family I'd love to know. I connect through the daughter Alice and her marriage to Martin Anderson. She and Martin divorce and then I loose track of her.

I have a Patrick Mooney in my family line that I've had a hard time pinpointing. He was my gr,gr,gr grandmother's father. Actually the only information I have on him comes from her death certificate where her father is listed as Patrick Mooney and mother was a McCormack or McCormick. My gr,gr,gr grandmother's name was Anna G. Mooney and she was born in West Virginia in Feb 1867. She married John Daly in 1883 (not sure where) before relocating to first Pine Creek, Pa, then Pittsburgh before finally settling in Cleveland, OH. John Daly worked for one of the railroads (I think it might have been the B&O). They lived in Cleveland until their deaths- his in 1917 and hers in 1934.

I'm a liitle confused. Your message says that Matthew was born about 1825 in Ireland but the 1871 census says he was born in 1841. Quite a big difference. The death index gives his approx. date of birth as 1837 as he was 42 when he died.

Mooney Ireland Help
Need help/advice in tracing Irish ancestry.

My great great grandmother was born in December 1869 in the Walsall District of Staffordshire England. Both of her parents are listed in the 1871 UK Census as having been born in Ireland. I sent for her birth cetificate and it lists her father as Matthew Mooney and Mother as Mary Butter. The father died in the UK in 1879 at approx 40 years old and the family migrated to the US. I suspect that both Matthew and Mary came to the UK from Ireland sometime in the 1840s or 50s but can't be sure. They probably came through Liverpool. I have found both names in the 1851 UK Census but they were both living in different areas of England. Mary near Liverpool and Matthew in Lancashire. Both of these are possibilities. I did a search for a marriage certificate on the BMD but did not find anything that matched up with the surnames Mooney and Butter. I suspect they were married in the UK and possibly not in Staffordshire. Their first child was born in 1864. On the 1900 US Census Mary (the mother) is living with her daughter Margaret (my great grandmother) in Pennsylvania. She was listed as 72 in 1900 but 38 in the 1871 UK census. I am searching for a death date in the US and possible obit.

Does anyone have suggestions on taking the next step back to Ireland?

I have sent for the other 2 childrens birth certificates and Matthew's death certificate in 1879 but I don't think that any of these will offer any insight into where they came from in Ireland.

I found a Patrick Mooney living in Walsall District who was about 6 years younger than Matthew also born in Ireland, that could possibly be a brother but again, I have no way to be sure.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

R
I just received information this evening from a older relative of this family that the Mooney's were indeed Catholic.

Margaret Mooney, who was the daughter of Matthew Mooney and Mary Butler gave up her Catholic faith to marry John A. Wheeler.

Now that I know the Mooney's where Catholic and Irish I would think the next step would be to look for church records in Staffordshire, District of Walsall, Darlaston, UK.

This hopefully will also help in regards to tracing both back to Ireland.

R
Thank you for your reply.

You have certainly given me some places to start.

I cannot determine if the Mooney or Butler family were Catholic or not. All I have to go on at this point is the 1871 Census which shows both Matthew Mooney and his wife, Mary (Butler) Mooney as having been born in Ireland. Since it seems that there were not good records kept on Irish immigration to the UK that is a dead avenue.

Matthew was born about 1837, according to his death certificate which states his age at death as 42 in 1879.

I have seen several different dates for Mary Butler but it seems the most common date would be 1827 as date of birth.

I have searched the marriage records but have not been able to find any marriage of a Matthew Mooney to a Mary Butler anywhere. Their first child was born in 1864 but they had children die so they could have been married anywhere from the late 1850s to early 1860s.

I suspect they came through the port of Liverpool and may not have settled in Staffordshire, Walsall, Darlaston at first.

Again, it is unclear if they were married in the UK. They may have been married in Ireland and came to the UK after.

Thanks again for your help.

Were obituaries common in the UK in 1879?

Rich
Yes, that was a mistake.

I just recently received Matthew Mooney's UK death certificate.

He died Feb 10, 1879 in Darlaston, District of Walsall, County of Stafford.

His address is listed as 6 Court Bilston Street.

Age 42 years old. This would put his birth in 1837. This date conflicts the age given on the 1871 Census, which shows him as 30 years old in 1871.

Rich

Let's raise the "Martin Dickerson Mooney" mystery again!

Martin Dickerson Mooney is first found for me in the 1850 Liberty County Georgia Census and it list Martin D. as 36 years old Physician from New York with wife Sara A. as a 31
year old from Va. The 1870 census lists him as 36 years old Physicain from Va. and Sara A as 44 years old from NY. It shows they had children Horace 14, Alberta 14, and Virginia 6. My Daddy's sister, who compiled this info before her death has a note here that says she found somewhere that Bertha Walden was the adopted daughter of Martin D. Mooney. Martin Dickerson Mooney's will - Tattnall County Courthouse, Reidsville, Ga. Will Book 1894 also list Osceola B. Rustin as a son. The 1886 census shows Martin D. Mooney MD as the postmaster at Liberty Co. Ga. This was found on page 61 of a book called Sweet Land of Liberty History of Liberty County
Georgia by Robert L. Groover. I show him as born 06/15/1813 m. to Sara A. who was born in 1818. She died 05/01/1888 and he sometime after he made his will in 1894. They are both buried in Taylors Creek cemetery at Liberty County Georgia. I show son Horace R. Mooney (Physicain) born 05/25/1856, d. 08/13/1894 Liberty Co. Ga.,m. Alice Hotchkiss, son Virgil E.A. Mooney, birth and death dates unknown, m. Rosa R., son Montague Mooney b. 09/08/1893, d. 03/14/1898. Horace was my great grandfather.
Now the mystery. I have met many ppl who know about this "other" Martin D. Mooney (b. about 1808 in Grayson County, VA) married Amelia (possibly Jones). He was kicked out of the Princeton Baptist Church (Mercer County, WV) of which he was an originial member in June, in 1843 for having a "debase" child. It is known that this Martin D. had a son named Styne Mooney and other unknown children. Family stories say he was a doctor. He went out on a horse for a call one day and never came back.
Anyone having any info that might help in this mystery, please contact me!!!!!!!!!! This is my brick wall!
My Martin Dickerson Mooney shows up in Liberty County Georgia, I show his birth-date as June 15, 1913 but I don't know where he was born and he died sometime after 1894,. He is married to Sara A,?. She was born in 1819 and died May 1, 1888 and is buried at Taylor's Creek Cemetery in Liberty County Georgia beside Martin D. Mooney. My Martin and Sara had 2 sons, Horace R. Mooney married to Sara Anna Alice Adrina Hotchkiss and Virgil E. A. Mooney who married Rosa R.? Mooney. Horace and Adrina Hotchkiss Mooney had my grandfather, Benjamin Southard Mooney married to Lillie Gertrude Newton (Mooney) and they had my father, Benjamin Southard Mooney Jr. married to Etta Louise Lampley. They also had Ellen Lorine Mooney b. Dec 2,1819 in Statesboro, GA, They also had Felton Horace Mooney married to Marie Chance Lovette Mooney on Mar.1, 1935 in Ridgeland, SC. They also had Walton Louise Mooney b. Mar. 04,1909, D. Dec 26, 1947, Statesboro, GA. They also had Nettie Ilene Mooney who married John Tyler Lee.And they had Bennie Thomas Mooney who married Thomas Coffer. They had Arthur Alfonzo Mooney who married Clyde Estelle Waters (Mooney). They had Sara Alice Elizabeth Mooney who married Thomas Laslie Newsome. They also has Jessie Errol Mooney who married Johnnie Frost (Mooney). If anym of this rings a bell with you please contact me.
My Patrick would have been rather old to father a child in 1867. And there would have to be a younger second wife. Sounds like your Ann was raised in West Virginia, yes? I don't have anything suggesting my Patrick went to West Virginia, just to the Beechwoods, Pennsylvania.

But you never know...so I will keep your line in mind.

Thank you for taking the time to post. And good luck with your Mooney ancestor. They are not easy!

Hi,

Have had a quick look at the Birmingham doicese web site. There is a search facility for parishes - St Josephs is on there with contact details for the Parish Priest, its website and an email contact. dwww.birminghamdiocese.or.uk -see Parishes and clergy heading and search a-z for Darlaston

I am not particularly familiar with the exact location - but as the church wasn't established until after the possible 1869 marriage (and in my experience they didn't waste much time before having children) then they may have married at the nearest Catholic church. I know that the Catholic church in Bilston (Holy Trinity) was established much earlier in the 19th century and had a huge Irish cogregation, I don't think it would have been unthinkable for marriages and baptisms to take place there. I am not familiar with the parishes that may have been in Wednesbury, Willenhall and Walsall which are also very close to Darlaston.

If I have any brainwaves I'll drop you a line.

Best of luck - Lisa

Hi there,

Just a quick thought - was Matthew Catholic? There wasn't a parish church in Darlaston until 1874 when an old congregational chapel was purchased by the church to form St Jospeh's parish. I am not sure where Catholics would attend prior to that date but maybe his burial records are held in Birmingham. If he wasn'tRC then the other churches in the area were St Georges built in 1844 and St Lawrence's.

A transcript of monumental inscriptions for St LAwrence, St GGeorges and the Wesleyan Methodist chapel has been published by the Birmingham and Midland SGH

You might try http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/STS/Darlaston/index.html

Hope this is of use - Happy Searching!
Lisa

I have run into a bump too. I am a Great Grandson of Delia Mooney who immigrated to the U.S. in 1910. She was 30 during the 1930 census and she married a man named Walter T. Donnell born in 1900 per the census. They were married on Sept 30th 1920. They had a daughter named Mary Donnell who married a man named Gordon Lindsey and had 6 children. I am the son of thier only daughter Geraldine Lindsey. Delia was married in York, Maine on September 30, 1920. My grandmother Mary Donnell-Lindsey died in 2001 before I could find out more. Her husbands name was Gordon Lindsey. Are we family? Who were your family members and what is your name? Email me at: larryguzman@excite.com mark subject as: "Mary Lindsey - Mooney Post Reply" I delete if not put in subject.

From family records:

Thomas Marion Mooney
Born 1817 Belfast, Ofally, lo, DMC,Ireland
Died Sep 9 1877 Logan Creek, Reynolds Cty,Mo.

Came to America when he was 29 years old, to avoid serving 4 years in the army, as the eldest son. Worked his way on a ship, left Ireland on April 1, 1846 and arrived in Quebec on May 15, 1846.

Came down to Ohio, and may have been in Pennsylvania and Virginia too.

First married in New York. She died and there where no children.

Then moved to Missouri in 1876. "We think he died in 1877 ant not in 1876....only four days between citizenship papers in Ohio, and death in Missouri".

After coming to Missouri in 1876, he settled on John P. George's farm, in the Logan creek area.

Family records state he is buried at Neely cemetery, in Lawrence county Missouri.

Now if we could find anything about his family in Ireland ?
