My grandfather was Carey Moores and my grandmothers maiden name was Mary Alice Fraser. My grandfather moved to Brewer Maine and changed his name to Theodore Moore. My late mother, Norma said that my grandparents came from Matapedia and I found a picture of my grandfather taken by a photography studio. I cannot make the name of the studio out, but it was taken by S.W. D_ _ _ _ in Campbellton N.B. I am looking for any realatives. I beleive that Ferguson was also a family name.

Moore/Blackmore family of Moorhayes, Cullompton, Devon, England.

Hi

Many of you may be related to the Moore Family of Moorhayes, Cullompton, England. The main branch of this family which died out with the death of Mary Moore who was the last in line of the main Family. She married John Blackmore of Sheldon, Devon, and had one child, John Moore Blackmore. The Parish Registers for Cullompton record the burial of "Mary wyef (sic) of Mr John Blackmore" on the 17 June 1724.
What in the Moore pedigree has always remained a mystery is the identity of her mother. I read many books in my search for details of the family and of significant importance is the following found in "Devonshire Wills by Charles Worthy. This book was published in 1896, long before I was born. That which has been transcribed below is exactly how it is written in the book Devonshire Wills, this also includes the NOTE which is also from the book. Following on is another will from the Moore Family that of Catherine Pomeroy wife of Sir John Moore. In the past I have been accused by a member of my family of writing this myself, especially the NOTE at the end of each will. He having refused to read the book, where it is clear and easy to read, and certainly fills in the details of the missing wife of George Moore. You are invited to try and read the book if possible and make your own decision on the wife of George Moore.

Devonshire Wills pages 236 & 237

1743. The last will of Mary Osmond of Tiverton, Widow, 10th Feb., 1742.
To be buried in "Moores Isle," in Cullompton Church, by the side of her mother.
To Kinsman William Bailey the younger, of Tiverton, silver tankard, salver, and punch ladle, the tea cannister, six tea spoons and tongs, and a gold watch. To his wife Mary "a diamond ring with green stone in it," best white satin gown flowered with gold, and "my linnen gown that I brought in London." To kinswoman Susannah Sellick, " If she be living in the same station at Kensington as I lately saw her," a diamond ring and silver podinger. To kinsman William Sellick, £7- 14s. per annum. To kinsman Peter Slape, £50. To Kinswoman Ann, wife of Francis Matthews, £100. To Miss Mary Coles, £50, and to her father Thomas Coles and to Susannah Haviland, a mourning ring each. To Mrs Mary Osmond of Halberton, two pairs of gold buttons, and to Eleanor Floyer, a mourning ring. The Arms of her first husband, "Mr, Moore," to be put on her hearse.
Residue to said Wm. Bailey, who is sole Exor.
Proved 17th Dec., 1743.
Trustees, Saml. Rogers, Rector of Withycombe, Somerset, and Vicar of Halberton; Thomas Balliman, and Thomas Coles.

NOTE.- Testatrix, whose marriage licence with "Mr. Moore" is not to be found, and whose maiden name is left blank in the Pedigree of Moore of Moorehays, was probably a daughter of William Sellick, who purchased the right of presentation to Cullompton Church, and presented thereto, in 1710.
She was the widow of George Moore of Moorhays, who died 5th Nov., 1711 and by him had an only daughter Mary, the wife of John Blackmore of Sheldon, and the ancestor of the present owner of Moorhays.

Following immediately on from the above will is that copied below

1606. The last Will of Catherine Lady "More" of Cullompton, dated 26th April, 1606. Desires to be buried in the parish church, and leaves the reparation thereof 10s., and to the poor 6s. 3d. To Robert Denys, 10s.
Reside to my servants "Mr. Tryslade and Mrs. Shepherd," who are Sole Exors.
Proved June, 1606.

Note. - The personal effects of Tesatrix were valued at £21 6s. 1d., inclusive of two horses and a mare, which were valued at £8 She was the widow of Sir John Moore of Moorhayes, and daughter of Sir Thomas Pomeroy of Berry, by Jane, daughter of Sir Piers Edgcombe.

Terry Blackmore

Re: Moores in Tennessee

I know this is a very old thread, but I am hoping to still find someone around. I am a direct descendant of William Moores who married Elizabeth Ross. I would love to find julie35209 or Kenneth Moore. I am very interested in the personal information that they have about the family.

Also, I am wondering if anything has been cleared up about the parentage of William Moores & Henry Moores who married the Ross sisters. I always see them associated with Christian Allward & William Moores of English descent, but I am under the impression they had a father that was Scottish & came to America by way of Ireland. Someone states in this thread that this is also implied in the book Ancestors and descendants of Lewis Ross Freeman & I know I have seen it in A record of the descendants of Isaac Ross and Jean Brown, which is available here on Ancestry. I am curious if anyone has made any progress on this issue.

Thanks!
Kelly

Carrie B. Moores b.1879 TN

This is a dead end for me. Carrie is the daughter of James A. Moores and Amanda Jane Parsley. All I have on her is that she was born abt. 1879 in Tennessee. A cousin that I have corresponded with, thought that either Carrie or her sister Cora may have married and moved to Mississippi. I know it wasn't Cora, cause she was my grandmother and I know that she lived and died in Cheatham County Tennessee. So I am thinking that maybe it was Carrie who moved to Mississippi.

If anyone from the James A. Moores line has any info on Carrie, it would be greatly appreciated!!

(brothers) family lines. Lot's of dead ends. Oldest brother Thomas B. died young from infection from wounds at Fort Donnelson, TN a year after the battle. Found his broken stone in a farmer's field near Aledo.

I am a descendant of the Carbonear Moors Family, and cannot see Zebedee Moores in my records. That doesn't mean he wasn't born there!! I did find the following: 1873 12 19 -At Blackhead-- Wm. Moores, Mulleys Cove. m. Catherine Flight,Small Point. Wit. Henry Thistle & John Mulley. Methodist VS52B This could be his parents, but then Zebedee would be from the Mulleys Cove family that is an extension of the neighbouring Blackhead Family.

I saw an earlier census but not the one you are refering to. That is good information to know. Thank you so much. Yes he (Freddie) was born aflicted as they use to say with his heart on the wrong side. I have a picture of his headstone in the cemetery near Barnum Iowa. It states June 11 1872 and died August 18 1880, 8 years, 2 months and 7 days of age. His stone says Freddie Moore. So that puts the death of My Great Grandmother after June 11 1872. My Grandparents moved to Missouri before the birth of my mother in 1907 so she did not get to learn too much about her family, they didn't seem to leave to many records. But my Grandfather was the Farmer, his sister was a preacher(sorta like Carrie Nations) one of the siblings was a Doctor and another was a Lawyer Aunt Emma Moore Pratt was called "just a housewife". Seems to me with this many professional people Grandpa Abner Daniel must have had an education even it does state he was a farmer in Canada???? My mother was had nine siblings. Four counting her were born in Missouri.

My Abner Daniel Moore must have been born in the early 1800, having married Betsy Jane Brown prior to the birth of my Grandfather Howard Case Moore on the 26 July 1863, near or in Brockville, in the county of Leeds, East Ontario, Canada. He did marry at least twice after my Grandmother Betsy Jane Brown Moore's death, she bore him six children all born in Canada I think? Howard Case, Nettie Moore Churchill, Emma Moore Pratt, Fred "Freddie" Moore (died young) but buried in Iowa, Charley Moore, Floyd Moore. I think her death happened in US, probably in Iowa. But Abner Daniel got at least one of his second wives in Canada. Census says that Abner Daniel's father was born in Canada and his mother was born in Ireland. It is mentioned that Betsy Jane Brown came from Sullivan County NY, if so then Abner Daniel may have had a wife before their marriage. They later became naturalized citizens of the US. I have often suspected that the "Case" name may be a clue to other connections and since I've read about the "famous Case families in Canada. Any help regarding this family of Moore's or Brown's is much appreciated.

William Moores married Christian Allward in 1690, in Woodbridge, N.J.; he was born in 1666/7 in Newbury.

A good resource for the Newbury/Woodbridge Moores family is Patty Myers's "Ancestors and Descendants of Lewis Ross Freeman, with related families" (Penobscot Press, 1995), which has a 90-page section on the Mooreses. She reports that William's father Matthew preferred the name "Moores", though he shows up as "Moore" in some records, and is referred to several times as a "Scotchman", which appears to conflict with a Berkshire origin.

Mrs Myers did not give the parents of Matthew Moores and his presumed brother Samuel Moore. Is there a paper trail connecting either of them to Edward Morris?

I trace back to Matthew Moores and Sarah Savory, married in Newbury, MA, but who spent most of their lives in Woodbridge, Middlesex, NJ. My branch is to another son of theirs, James (brother to the William you cite). Three James later, a James born in NJ in 1730 moved on to what is now Bel Air, Harford Co., MD. His son and grandson, both James (4th and 5th in this line of James), ended up in Richmond, Jefferson Co., OH. As far as I can tell, these 6 generations all used the final "s" in their name, as this variation can be found in records of Newbury, Woodbridge, Harford Co., and Jefferson Co.
There are other spellings in records for these same people, "Moore", "More", "Mores", etc. But remember that names were spelled by someone who could write as it sounded to the person writing. For example, a census taker might spell it differently than a court clerk.

Suggest you look at the New Jersey crowd of Moores to see if you can find a path that took one to NC as I found a path to the Maryland family.

I would like to know what you think about the Moores/Morris connection on Ancestry.com.
My great great grandfather, Isaac F. Morris, was born in Orange Co. NC in 1760. Supposedly, he was the son of William Moores and Elizabeth Ross. He changed his name back to Morris when he moved from NC to Henderson Co., TN. This line is supposedly back to Edward Morris, born in 1455 in Berkshire, England. The name was changed to More by his grandson, Willyam More, then to Moore by Willyam's son, Nicholas. The name remained Moore until William Moores, born 1690 in Newbury, Essex, MA. ( who married Christian Allward), changed it to Moores. William was the son of Matthew and Sarah Savoy Moore of Newbury, MA.
I know that names were changed quite often back in those days and the names are interchangable. I am a Morris by birth and have had a lot of difficulty finding any Morris' in N.C. that relate to me. If the name change is true, I can understand why I can't find Morris's until they came to Henderson Co., TN.

I take it then Nina that you found your family in the US for the 1880 census (Lincoln, Calhoun, Iowa)? It does reveal which children were born where - Freddie & Charles in Iowa and the older ones in Canada. Floyd isn't on this census - did he die young? It also states that Betsy was born in Canada.
Moore DNA testing

My name is James Thomas Moore. I had my DNA tested at www.familytreedna.com I just wanted to give this infomation in case any male Moores were interested in having their DNA tested. You will get it done cheaper if you join and have it tested through the Moore-WorldWide group. Go to http://small-stuff.com/MOORE/ They are pretty much the only Moore group that is active in the www.familytreedna.com Moore groups. The 12 marker test cost $99. The 37 marker test is $189 through them. The 25 marker is $148 and the 67 marker is $269. I have received my 12, 25, and 37 marker results a long time ago. I am waiting for my 67 marker results. They should be in any day now.

I have match 404 other people with my DNA thus far. Most are on the 12 marker test, but several are on the more helpful 25 and 37 marker tests.

You can see the results of all the Moores that belong to this group at this link

http://small-stuff.com/MOORE/results.htm

Please email me if you have any more questions. I am more that willing to help you figure out how to get your Moore DNA tested.

It really is a very easy process. They mail you two little scrapers. You scrape the inside of you cheek. It does not hurt. Left cheek one morning the right cheek the next. You put the scrapers in a little plastic bottle and mail them off. Then you wait several weeks and you get your results and all your matches. Hopefully you will match me. Then the fun begins. I have found lots of lost cousins and have proven at least one cousin was not really my cousin. That was the hard part.

James Thomas Moore
moorecourt@yahoo.com
