I am researching the Moorman family from North Carolina who came to Texas in the 1860's. We have a Elzo Hamon Moorman b 9 Sep 1919 Goree, TX, d. 27 Oct 1988 Breckenridge TX and buried in the Albany TX cemetary. He was the only child of Charles Moorman and Ethel Brown. Charles was the son of Charles Thomas Evander Moorman and Ann Eliza Davis. They are on my public tree: Palmer-Hayes. If this is your relative please feel free to contact me, I have plenty more information.

Re: Descendants of James M. Moorman of Chambers County, Alabama

Mary:

Thanks very much for your information. That would be the same Michael Moorman but I think that Silas must be a brother to the James M. Moorman whose descendancy I am seeking.

In particular, there is one son of James M. and Mary Ann Moorman I am interested in. He is Willard S. Moorman, b. Nov 1873 in Chambers County, AL, who appears in the 1880 and 1900 U. S. Federal Census but then his widow, Donna, and daughter, Dan or Dar, is found with James M and Mary Ann Moorman in the 1930 census. I can find nothing in betwween and would like to be able to see what else I can locate about him.

Mary Jimmie Moorman, the only daughter of James M. and Mary Ann, I have been able to trace through her life. She was the wife of Frank Wallace Waggener, the younger brother of my great-grandfather. They had two sons but I know of no additional descendants.

There was also a son, Cull Cade Moorman, b. 1891 in TX and d. 1964 -- also in TX.

I do thank you again. Please let me know if you find anything else on this line.

Ruth Dowdy-McArthur
Descendants of James M. Moorman of Chambers County, Alabama

Born in Chambers County, Alabama to Michael Moorman, b. abt 1826 in Georgia and his wife, Elizabeth E, b. abt 1827 in South Carolina, James M. Moorman married Mary Ann (surname unknown), probably abt. 1848. James M. and Mary Ann Moorman died sometime after 1930, probably within the next few years.

Among their four children were Willard S., b. Nov 1873 in Chambers County, Alabama. He died sometime between 1909 and 1930 as I find his widow, Donna and a daughter, aged 22 yrs, living with J. M. and Mary Ann Moorman in Texas in the 1930 census. Her name appears to be Dar or Don. I have been unable to find any other records on him or any of his family.

The family relocated to Texas within the next two or three years as a daughter, Mary Jimmie Moorman, was b. Jun 1876 there. She married Frank Wallace Waggener Aug 1899 in Comanche County, Texas and they had two sons: Eugene Wallace Waggener, b. abt 1905 and James Moorman Waggener, b. 1910 -- both in Texas. Jimmie died 10 Jul 1962 in Brown County, Texas.

A daughter, Era, seems to have died very young.

Another son, Cull Cade Moorman, was b. Jan 1891 in Sipe Springs, Texas. He married Lila Love in Aug 1912 and they had several children, the youngest of whom was a daughter, Mildred. Cull C Moorman was enumerated in the 1920 census as a bank president and then in 1930 he was working in production in the oil fields of Texas. He died Apr 1964 in Texas.

I am hopeful of finding anyone with information on any or all of these Moorman and Waggener family members. Frank Wallace Waggener is the brother of my great-grandfather and I've been hopeful of putting together their story.

Thank you very much.

Ruth Dowdy-McArthur

That connection to Christopher is my problem also. I will be going to the Family History Library in Salt Lake for a month this summer and this is one of the items I will be working on. I had one particularly unkind email a while back from a member of the Reynolds society telling me that there was no connection. But I have to prove it to myself! If I find anything, I'll post it - but don't get too hopeful, a lot of people have been looking a long time.

Thomas Moorman, age 30, a grocer of Warwickshire, travelled as an indentured servant on the Bona Nova which arrived in Virginia 4 Nov 1619. On 12 July 1620 he petitioned the Virginia Company for his freedom. There is no record of the outcome of his petition nor is there any record of a grant of land. See the Virginia Magazine of Genealogy, A Passenger List of the 1619 Bona Nova, vol. 33, no. 1 (February 1995), p. 11.

Albemarle County was not created until 1744.

The Charles Moorman who patented land in what became Albemarle County was a son of Thomas Moorman and his wife, Elizabeth. Charles lived successively in New Kent County, later in Hanover County, and finally in Louisa County where he died in 1757. He lived in what is known as the Green Spring neighborhood, now a historic district, in central Louisa.
You didn't say where Frank married but if it was Anderson Co. KY, you'll want to check the marriage applications. I have one from Anderson Co. that asked for the parents' names and where the parents were born for both bride and groom. Regardless of where he married, if you haven't obtained the marriage records, you will want to because these were common questions from other areas also (but not all) Good luck!

I have Joseph F Mooreman as the son of SJ and Luitza Mooreman in Georgia and not much more information than that.

It looks like Joseph was Hannah's 2nd of 3 husbands during her lifetime. Her first marriage was at the age of 12 (!) to James Baley and was officiated over by her father Minister GW Brazil. (Not sure if this wedding was annulled or if James died).

Joseph and Hannah married when she was 17. Again GW Brazil officiated.

Hannah's third marriage was to Ephraim Stacks at the age of 38. This time performed by a Justice of the Peace.

I have some pictures of Hannah when she is older. Nina, I've tried to e-mail you before but didn't get a response.
If you are interested in linking up for more information, please reply so we can get in touch.

I have some photos that have no names on them and can't tell which aunts are which.

-- Descendant of Ruth Fowler Overton
Leah Hoffman

My information is that related to the Moormans who settled in Virginia during the period of the first permanent English establishment. Thomas Moorman, who was granted a considerable tract of land by the London Company, came over on the Bona Nova in 1619. A number of years later, in 1735, his son, Charles Moorman, a Quaker.)was living in Albemarle County VA, on a vast tract of land near what was known as the Moorman River.
Copyright, 1934 by Ruby Haskins Ellis.

Thanks for the helpful suggestions and so quickly replying as well!

My DAR application was on Stephen Goggin,Jr. so I have all my lineage up to him without issue.

Interestingly, I have cousins who are Goolsbys. Wonder if that family is related to Francis (is that correct, or is it Frances?) Goggin Moorman Goolsby. Those cousins are related to both of my parents through marriage. It's always interesting at reunions as some of these are my father's 1st cousins and my mother' 1st, once removed.

I'm having trouble providing sufficient proof, for a supplemental to The Jamestowne Society, that this Elizabeth Reynolds is the daughter of Christopher, son of Christopher the immigrant. I'll get there but it's been frustrating trying to prove what's known.

I look forward to collaborating whenever we can.

Thanks again!
Greetings!
I don't know if you are still looking or not but here is your answer:
Claud Moorman is the son of Charles Thomas Evander Moorman and Mary Elizabeth Bowman. He is the brother of Nora, Calvin, Eva, Clabe, and Alene (who was my grandmother). They were all born in Comanche Co. Texas.
Their grandfather was John Thomas Moorman (1812-1867), son of John Moorman (1769-1842),son of Zachariah Moorman (1742-1819) or so I believe. The family moved from North Carolina after the death of John Thomas.
You can check some of this on my tree: Palmer-Hayes.
One of our family members has compiled a book listing all the descendents of John Thomas Moorman and Ann Elizabeth Davis of North Carolina -contact me if you are interested.
Shelley

I am seeking information on Frank Patterson MOORMAN who was born in Kentucky on 16 September 1881. I've found him in the WWI Draft Registration listings, in the 1920 Census in Galena, Cherokee County, Kansas, and in 1930 in Heavener, Le Flore County, Oklahoma. He died there in 1934. I am trying to find out who his parents were. His father was supposedly born in Kentucky and his mother was supposedly born in Germany. He married Vinya De Lorenzo/Laura Lawrence. Can anyone help?

Moorman/Molen/Moreland

I have searched and searched for a Philip Molen born abt 1753 (Maryland?), (a millenium file says 1749), who at one time was in Bedford County, Virginia. His father was a farmer as well as himself. He married a "Mary Polly," no last name and had a large family, Hezekiah, Aquilla, Joseph, Nellie, Prissie and Nancy were some. He moved with his family to Virginia (Bedford being one) and sometime 1780s or 90s moved to Kentucky, possibly after Mary Polly's death abt 1787, residing last it is thought in Wayne County, KY. My question is this...for ten or more years several different people have researched and found nothing beyond Philip. I think there may be some connection to Moorman, possibly even that this is his true last name as it seems the name Jesse and Aquilla are repeated in both Molen and Moorman families. They also both owned slaves and I wonder if Philip didn't leave when the Quakers required release of slaves. Polly was born in VA. Aquilla/Aquilia was the 2nd son of Philip and Mary Polly born in Virginia and married a Docia/Dosha White and had 11 children. He also followed his father to KY. He was a tobacco planter and boatsmen which I have also seen in the Moorman history. He boated tobacco product and timber down the Cumberland River. Docia died first and in old age Aquilla md. a Mrs. Hudson, they later divorced/separated and he went to live with his son Wesley (another Moorman name). She remained on or near her husband's tobacco plantation. He died July 22, 1869, 90 years. He owned four slaves and opposed Lincoln and eventually lost his slaves and quite a large amount of property. Aquilla's third son Jesse born July 25, 1805 in Virginia also went to KY and married Laurany Huffaker of Wayne County. Eventually this line moved on to Utah after joining the LDS church. I am wondering if the name change occurred as they left the Quakers and joined methodists or if they may have changed the name upon joining the Mormon church as the term Mormon was originally used as a derogatory remark by mobs. Just some thoughts if anyone has some information it is appreciated. =)
