Dear Margaret
Thank you very much for your informative reply. It is very much appreciated. Morey Rootsweb is actually not a Ned Kelly boxing ring, but a message board for sharing information on the various Morey families around the world; and as a rule these Moreys do not underarm bowl.
We were discussing William Morey and his descendants in Australia. Amongst us of the Morey Forum through various searches individually made we find; he as an assisted immigrant, occupation tailor, left Haslebury Plucknett, SOM, ENG, the village where he was christened 06 May 1798 in the Anglican Church of Saint Michael, son of George Morey and Julian Dix; made his way to Plymouth, DEV, ENG and the awaiting sailing ship, the Blonde on which anchors were heaved 26 Jun 1848 and the journey to Port Phillip, VIC, AUS began.
But to go back a bit this William Morey, who could have been the ancestor of many of us, or at least related, was found in London, to which I should add, many Morey paths along the spider’s web led, including my own dear Moreys of Hampshire and previously Sussex.
Occupations divided us, as mine were sailors, bricklayers and stonemasons, though that all changed when they reached Auckland, where they became wheelwrights, blacksmiths, farmers, schoolteachers, kauri bushmen, gum diggers, gold miners, publicans, and fishermen.
These Moreys never lied, often exaggerated or bent slightly the facts, may not have been always right but I must emphasise were never wrong. This is something you must always remember when dealing with Moreys and the researchers of them.
There were enough Morey genealogists in Godzone to do between them thousands of hours of research. Those of various Morey families shared their work and when frailty of mind took them before they passed away sent me their entire Morey research.
Some were descendants of Moreys who sailed directly to New Zealand from various English ports; others had sailed to Australian ports and then came on to New Zealand, where coastal shipping lists show a vast number of trips north and south. We are still today getting Moreys entering Kiwiland from England an America
Each Morey tribe had its own Brick Wall, which we named. We had Moreys in Back River in Tasmania from Chichester just up the road from my Moreys in Havant. My Moreys went to Parua Bay on the Whangarei Harbour, some Moreys went to Akaroa in Canterbury, others to Rakaia in Canterbury, others to Canterbury then across the Southern Alps to Hokitika in Westland, then up to Manaia in Taranaki, Mapiu, King Country, Auckland, Libya, Cassino, New Guinea – just basic Morey migration.
The first Morey to Australia other than on Cook’s voyages, was Mary Morey shipped to Botany Bay, First Fleet via Rio Janeiro. Two Morey cousins were shipped to Hobart, one got back to England. Samuel Morey the machine breaker was shipped to Hobart, and it is for his Australian descendants I am searching, because KLN Machine Breaker descends from KLN Hannah Rummey; KLN Parua Bay also descends from KLN Hannah Rummey; KLN Akaroa also descends from KLN Hannah Rummey; KLN Sarah Hobart also descends from KLN Hannah Rummey, and KLN Hannah Rummey descends from KLN Mary Coates and there are umpteen little clans associated with KLN Mary Coates and they were from near Chichester from where the KLN Back River come. Two Moreys of KLN Sarah Hobart were born on Malta in the Mediterranean during the Crimea War. But prior to that their father was in the 1841 census in Kingston, SRY, ENG with his parents Henry Morey and Hannah Rummey. At that time his brother Henry Morey was in the Royal Navy and the following year at the Battle of Acre in the Mediterranean for which he was awarded the medal, The Star Of Acre, now held by Moreys in New Zealand. While his brother was in Malta, Henry Morey was in the RN fleet led out by Queen Victoria from the Thames, where it went to blockade the Russians in the Baltic Sea.
For some reason when Henry Morey quartermaster RN and stickler for accurate documents arrived in Auckland 21 Dec 1864 at 11 pm on the Talbot, he called himself on one document only Henry William Morey, and when Edward Morey arrived at Lyttelton 21 Jan 1859 on the Strathallan, he called himself Edward William Morey. Alred Hugh Morey of KLN Hokitika who arrived 21 Sep 1858 on the Zealandia at Lyttelton used William in the naming of one child. Then Edward Morey of KLN Rakaia also arrived at Lyttelton. His family moved after the first war in which they lost one son, to the Bay of Plenty and after the second to Te Awamutu in the Waikato. The Back River Moreys, who were shoemakers in Chichester were drapers in Hobart and in Taranaki where the Hokitika Moreys were farmers, but stationery steam engine drivers back in London, where your Moreys were tailors. The RN Morey of Parua Bay had his youngest son buy a hotel at Mercer and he in turn put his youngest son through university. After the second war in Te Awamutu, my Latin teacher was a Parua Bay Morey, I served my time with a Rakaia Morey whose father was the BOP farmer ex CBY, ex London train conductor I think or was it coachman at Buckingham Palace, or closely related to one, and a Back River Morey was farming though of course they had been shoemakers in Chichester. Many years later my Latin teacher wrote the foreword to my 400 page Morey book.
The Edward Morey to the Otago Goldfields early on was mixed up with Edward Morey the farmer of Rakaia, and Edward Morey the stone mason from Akaroa; when in fact he was Edward Morey of Ballarat, gold miner but previously merchant navy born close to London descendant of chair bottomers vagabonds and gypsies, and royal broom makers in Hampshire. These Broom Maker Moreys used in their production a plant, a mate, I think to deadly nightshade, containing a drug where one could go for a trip without leaving town. One thought they were flying and this is how witches are connected with the Moreys of Hampshire, KLN Prudence Reynolds.
I was thinking about the work we were doing in New Zealand back in the early 1980s, and how I found Eila Joan Tetzlaff Morey through a KLN Back River Morey with who I was in contact. There were people down in the South Island in the Nelson Bays area and over the hill in Takaka or Collingwood who were descended from Edward Morey of Akaroa. He is the one who died in Picton when building a church and he fell off the scaffolding. It was through my Morey book in the Victoria University Library in Wellington one of this clan, Keith Griffith of Te Tahi Bay discovered the South Island Morey research was faulted and actually pulled into line with an Edward we had who was his Edward too.
And look at those Moreys Cliff Morrey found in India, William George Morey, the five shilling donation I found in New Plymouth, New Zealand, the obituary in the Taranaki paper of a Morey in India, the 1851 census he did in Chichester, Sussex, and the 1841 census Eila did too; the passenger list for the SS City Of Hobart in Hobart from Port Philip 07 Oct 1854, tying in KLN Back River Moreys with the Moreys of India.

• An Indian paper states: A very painful sensation was caused in Ootacamund yesterday morning (May 6th) by the terribly sudden death of Mr William George Morey, who has been as well-known as he has been popular for many years in Bangalore, Ootacamund and Madras. Mr Morey was a great sportsman and loved horses and hunting. He was early on the racecourse yesterday, riding as usual, and seemed in perfect good health and spirits. Indeed, I was conversing with him shortly before he died. It would seem he was riding a horse belonging to Colonel Gordon Price, his son-in-law, and had gone round the course about one and a-half times when he apparently lost strength and fell to the ground. - This was between the three, furlong and half-mile posts, and Mr Clementson, Colonel and Mrs Gordon-Price and others, , who were on the course, rode to Mr Morey' s assistance at once with stimulants.
He was conscious when they reached him, but died in a few moments, apparently from syncope, or failure of the heart's action. Mr Morey, I am told, was 68 years of age," but he was so active and apparently healthy a man that he might have passed, for ten years less. His cheery voice and presence will be much missed from the Downs, the race-course, also from Bangalore, Mysore, and Madras. He was a 'true sportsman and a gentleman, and will be long remembered as such by all who knew him.
Mr George William Morey of Bangalore was a brother of Mr Walter Morey of this town (New Plymouth); who was christened 17 Jun 1844, Rumboldswyk, Chichester, SSX, ENG, Walter Morey is found in the SSX census 1851 aged six. He migrated to Port Phillip, Melbourne, VIC, AUS on the Archilles arriving Sep 1854 aged 08. On 07 Oct 1854 he arrived in Hobart aboard the City of Hobart from Melbourne, with father James Morey brother Charles Morey and his wife, brother Josiah Morey and his wife, sister Amelia Morey and brother William Morey. He passed his teenage years in Hobart and then migrated to NZL where at the age of 25 he married Martha Elizabeth Green at Nelson in 1869. She died 18 Apr 1871 and is buried at Wakapuaka Cemetery, Nelson. Walter moved to New Plymouth with his son James Clewer Morey where he married 14 May 1873 Sophia Veale at her father's house. Walter took his son James Clewer Morey to Nelson 12 Mar 1876 on the "Phoebe" to visit his Greene grandparents and returned alone 16 Mar 1876. Brother Josiah Morey was in NZL and brother Charles Morey with whom Josiah migrated from SSX to AUS had been and gone. Walter lived in New Plymouth for many years running a business as a draper in Vivian Street and Devon Street. He played bowls for New Plymouth Email 472 01 and played at Crystal Palace, LND, KEN, England during 1901. He died 25 Jul 1916 in New Plymouth where he is buried. Morey Forum Email 1833: Presentation to Mr W. MOREY.
Mr W. Morey, one of the veteran players of the local Bowling Club, was the recipient of a travelling rug on Thursday • afternoon, when his fellow members assembled on the green and made the presentation as a token of their regard, prior to Mr MOREY S departure on a trip to the United Kingdom. Mr J. Paul, the President, made the presentation in a few well-chosen remarks. He referred to the interest Mr MOREY had always taken in the affairs of the Club, and to his ability as an exponent of the favourite game. He added that Mr MOREY would play with the Australasian team of bowlers, who intend to tour the Old Country, and he; (the speaker), who would captain the New Zealand members of the team, would have the help of a fellow clubman, whose prowess he was well acquainted with. He then proposed Mr MOREY's good health, which was drunk with enthusiasm, and followed by the usual vocal accompaniments. Mr MOREY, in reply, thanked his fellow clubmen for the presentation, and the {President for the kind words be had spoken. Although he had not taken such an active part as he should have liked in the administration of the Club, yet he had always endeavoured to uphold the Club's reputation in the playing, line, and he would do his best in support of their chief, Mr Paul, when they played in the Old Country. When he returned from his tour he hoped to find them all well and prosperous. Those members present then individually bade Mr MOREY bon voyage. Mr MOREY left by the Takapuna for South this (Friday) morning. He will join the Suevic at Sydney, going Home; via Cape Town
One of my Kiwi Morey genealogist mates Karen Linda Morey belongs to KLN Sarah Setter. Sarah Setter b. Jul 1823 Christow, DEV, ENG d. 13 Jul 1904 Balaclava, Melbourne, VIC, AUS, m. Morey Forum Email 1657 05:
Following the early death of his elder brother John in 1839 William Morry Jr was the sole male descendant of William and Jane Morry and it is to this son we trace our ancestry. William Jr who was most likely born towards the end of 1823 became an agricultural labourer who could read but not write and who therefore signed all documents with his mark. Shortly before his 22nd birthday William was married at the Anglican Church in the neighbouring parish Budford Devon on 08 Oct 1845 to 22 yr old Sarah Setter who like himself could read but not write.
Williams’s bride had been born in Jul 1823 in the small town of Dunsford Devon which is located about midway between Morton Hampstead and Exeter. In all likelihood Sarah’s father Richard Setter had been born at Cheriton Bishop Devon in the latter part of the 1790 and it is believed that he had a brother named James Setter also born at Cheriton Bishop in 1788. On May 5th 1816 Richard Setter who was a farm labourer married Grace Gidley at Saint Thomas the Apostle church of England in Exeter.
It was at this same church that Grace Gidley’s maternal grandparents Thomas Westcott and Grace Boutcher had been married on 2 April 1757. Thomas and Grace had a family of at least 8 children all of whom were baptised at Stoke Damerel Devon and three of whom died in infancy. Their youngest child was a daughter named Mary whose christening took place 16 October 1772. Less than 19 yrs later Mary Westcott was married on 22 August 1971 to Nathaniel Gidley with the service taking place at Whitestone. It was here that this couples 9 children one of whom died in infancy were baptised. It was Nathaniel and Mary’s 2nd eldest child Grace christened 15 Dec 1793 who married Richard Setter. Grace and Richard Setter had a family of at least 4 children and probly more of whom we have no knowledge at this time. Their known children were Mary B1819 Dunsford Married 1846 to Thomas Mock, Sarah B1823 Dunsford to William Morry 1845. George B Devon 1826 married Martha Rowe and Francis B Devon 1854 married Martha Creswill.
At the age of 30 Richards Brother James Setter who also worked as a labourer was married at Crediton Devon 05 Nov 1818 to 23 yr old Elizabeth Forward the youngest of 10 children born to John Forward and Agnes Harper who had wed at Crediton on 07 Jun 1775 Elizabeth’s birth in 1795 had taken place at Newton St Cyes which is where she was baptised 21 Jun 1799 at the age of 4. Following their marriage James and Elizabeth lived at Tedburn St Mary, where they raised 6 children 4 sons and 2 daughters.
After exchanging their wedding vows at Budford (Bridford) this is where William and Sarah Morry lived and where their first 3 children were born. The birth of the eldest son John took place in early 1847 (before the end of March) about 16 months following his parent’s marriage and a second boy George was born in the latter half of the following year. At the end of 1850 Sarah gave birth to the couple’s first daughter who they named Emily. The census which was carried out in the first quarter of 1851 records the family living at 41 higher Lowton in the parish of Bridford. William the head of the household was working as an agricultural labourer and the record reflects that he and Sarah were both 27 years of age. Their son John was 4 George 2 and Emily just 4 mths old. Sadly however sometime before reaching her 2nd birthday their infant daughter died.
In the year following her own wedding Sarah’s older sister Mary Setter was married at the age of 27 to a 29 yr old farm labourer named Thomas Mock who had been born at south Taunton Devon in 1817. Less than 2 years after they had exchanged their vows Mary gave birth at Dunsford in the early 1848 to this couples only child a son called George Mock. The 1851 census tells that Mary and Thomas and their baby were residing at 26 Little Silver Dunsford and hence were neighbours of William and Sarah Morry. Sarah’s 20 yr old single brother Francis was also nearby working as a house servant for a farmer named John Snow who had a wife and 3 teenage children. Additionally Sarah’s uncle and Aunt James and Elizabeth Setter were resident at 11 village House in the parish of Tedburn St Mary whilst their 23yr old single son George who was working as a labourer was a lodger at 154 New Rd Christow.
Morey Forum Email 0407 06: Leaving Plymouth, DEV, ENG, 14 Jan 1853, William and Sarah were assisted immigrants on the Earl Grey. They arrived at Port Philip, Melbourne, VIC, AUS 15 May 1853, book number nine page 106. William was aged 28, John aged 05, George aged 03. In Victoria 1854 he worked for Mr Smith.
In 1887 approximately 12 months following his daughter Emily’s wedding when William Morey suffered a stroke which left him paralysed. Hence it was probably shortly thereafter that he and Sarah left Cheltenham and moved to Balaclava where they purchased a house at 37 Marlborough Street which they named “Devonshire Cottage” in remembrance of their roots.
KLN Sarah Setter in Victoria, Australia mingles with your KLN Eliza Wayford along with nearly every Morey mentioned so far including my own KLN Parua Bay, cousins of KLN Sarah Hobart mentioned in the Ryerson Index. You hold no sanctity or copyright to any of this Morey research. Yours just happens to be a minuscule part of this whole Morey Story, which luckily I have been, bestowed the privilege of continuing until frailty forces me to the grave. Abide With Me.
I have decided to whom I will pass the baton of Morey research. She is a Morey researcher of Massachusetts ex Maine. You would not have a clue whether we are related or not and nor do I, but I am working on it, and for once I hope I do not find it.
If I were to hazard a guess, and this does not mean KLN RI Roger as far as Hazards or Arnolds for that matter go, you are KLN Tremor, no not that sort of tremor God you Aussie birds have a one track mind, Tremor Morey from Devon in the land of the long white Pomp.
Juliana Lambshed.
I have KLN Juliana Lambshed on my paste board. Seated in the heart of Devon, this Morey clan due I suppose due to Tuberculoid Psychosis has meandered out of the West Country and today some of them live in Chichester or close by. I hope Morey researchers a century from now if I do not crack it, do not think the Sussex Moreys due to location are really Sussex Moreys.
I will get back to the probability of the Saxon Shore Moreys originating from Valldemossa in Majorca in the Balearic Islands well before we Brython Moreys had a surname. I will back this up by following the precession of the equinox, timing of the megalithic clocks and the evolution of the A Blood Group out of Eastern Africa across the fertile plains and mountains of North Africa across the Strait of Gibraltar and along the Atlantic coast of France, to Britain, but also around to Sweden, down to Poland, Germany, Bulgaria, Greece, Italy, Southern France to Spain and 31 Dec 1229 to Majorca where they blew the Moors out of the Mediterranean islands, and like any conquering Norman, Visigoth, or Savannah East African people, keeping out of pretence the aboriginal name, the reason being only appeasement of the land loser. The name in Spain was Morell, the sea as the Morells were coastal people and fishermen, but on Majorca due to diction the LL changed to Y, hence Morey is only found in Majorca, and who Majorcan Morey researchers today show were sailors and fishermen as inscribed in marital, christening, and death records in the bishopric in Palma, and on tombstones and records in Valldemossa and other villages amongst the mountains of limestone.
So amongst Majorcan sailors trading wine for wool and tin, hides and linen flax, slaves and women, it is supposed one Balearic Island Morey married a girl of Brythonia and his descendants, sailors like their father cruised up the Saxon Shore from Plymouth to Bridport to Weymouth to the Isle O Wight, and Portsmouth marrying girls and keeping the Morey line. The Morey of Majorca I know is B blood group the Morey descent being maternal. My Y chromosome is not ex Morey, so cannot be used, but I have some pretty good Morey, Mowry, etc mates who might like to prove me incorrect as though you believe it, are never wrong, just mistaken.
All the Moreys in Peru descend from one Morey from Sencelles, Baltasar MOREY who married Antonia FIOL-Morey and their first child Juan Joseph MOREY-Fiol was born 20 Aug 1666 (Tocat de aigua). These Moreys owned farms and vineyards. All the Moreys in Chile descend from one Morey of Valldemossa. The Morey Forum has not linked these two clans together yet.
Well your William Morey was not the only Morey in London was he and not the only Morey in Somerset, and he was not the only William Morey from Somerset to migrate to Australia.
The French Huguenot Moreys from Rochelle were only passing through Somerset when the wife of one was born 12 Apr 1690 at Taunton, on their way to Cork where these people of the Atlantic Coast were hostile towards Huguenot who were forced to migrate to within the Pale, while the sons migrated to Virginia and the father wrote a manuscript of his memoirs, which has been sent to me. What they did prove was there was migration inland from the coast of Britain of Moreys from Europe.
Your idea George Morey had family is an illusion. The Australian Moreys went up a garden path with George on the Presto belonging to KLN Eliza Wayford. We New Zealand Moreys have proven his line is KLN Bernard Major and he gave a wrong name and age. This clan did come here, but left only footprints. Your George Morey even if he had several of 238 spellings of Morey and a miss transcribed age of any number up to 80 and thought he was born outside Somersetshire such as Staffordshire or Suffolk, Yorkshire or Nottinghamshire did not make the 1841 census, let alone the 1851. My notes say he died before civil registration in 1837.
Your Thomas Morey did marry and have children; Frederick Morey the younger son:

He was living with his spinster sister Emily Morey for many years in Chard. She was a milliner in the same town and also died after 1911 I suppose the shop they ran was owned by the lord of the Chard Manor.
Thomas Morey, Tailor was not in the 1851 census with his wife Elizabeth 1851 aged 42, Tailoress, and children Elizabeth Morey 1851 aged 21 Dressmaker, Emily Morey 1851 aged 10, and Frederick Morey 1851 aged 08; living at 67 Near Cross, Haslebury Plucknett, SOM, ENG. The main reason for his failure to be enumerated in the 1851 census was his death 1851-1Q St Caths 10 415 civil death registration at Yeovil, though he likely died at Haslebury Plucknett, SOM, ENG. Thomas Morey the son was also deceased 1847-4Q St Caths 10 P civil death registration at Yeovil, though he likely died at Haslebury Plucknett, SOM, ENG too.
I feel it is rather spurious of you to infer there are large numbers of your Moreys in England, and Australia, when you know the family had died out in England with only William who had migrated to Australia. He had lost his first wife and all his five or more children by her. He still had his second wife and two children, but had lost five. We New Zealand Moreys talk about Tuberculoid Psychosis being the driving force behind migration out of the sleazy pox ridden English villages and I suggest William Morey had it too.
He and Alice Purchase apparently now beyond her child bearing years headed for Plymouth to save their only two children left, and Charles Langdon Morey was the only son and one to carry on the Morey name for his clan. You know full well this is a tiny Morey clan. He did a fine job under the odds with three sons making it to the 20th century. Their families make up a two page descendants chart.
Here is an incomplete descendant’s chart for William Morey of Haslebury Plucknett where births and christenings blend into one:
1. William1 Morey was born 06 May 1798 in St Michael, Haslebury Plucknett, SOM, ENG, and died 27 Nov 1880 in Benalla, VIC, AUS. He married (1) Sophia Old 08 Jul 1820 in Greyfriars, Newgate, LND, ENG. Edenhope is a town in Victoria, Australia. It is located on the Wimmera Highway, 30 km from the South Australian border, in the Shire of West Wimmera local government area. At the 2006 census Edenhope had a population of 913. The township of Edenhope was established some years later than nearby Apsley, the Post Office opening on 16 Jul 1864. The town sits on the shores of Lake Wallace, which is home to abundant water birds, and is a popular fishing and water sports destination. However due to Australia's on going drought Lake Wallace is now dry, and the water bird population is depleted.
Other Morey clans to New Zealand and Australia:
Hedley Ivor Morey was first on a New Zealand in 1969 living at 13 Hastings Road, East Coast Bays with his wife Ursula. As a couple they moved to 14 Wilson Avenue, Whangarei and mingled with KLN Mary Whittington and my KLN Parua Bay, and later to 23 Pine Road, Orewa where in Centreway Road live KLN Back River. During the second war his address was Saxon Street, Numurkah. Why he came to New Zealand is a puzzle. He was a wool classer in Victoria, and Marsden Oil Refinery is the only real industry around Whangarei with a bit of yacht building. Perhaps after the death of his first wife he met a New Zealand woman from East Coast Bays. I have never seen any children connected to him. He was 69 in 1969.
KLN Mary Whittington is an Isle O Wight Morey clan, with still many on the island but many in mainland Hampshire, Canada, America, Australia, and New Zealand. This clan intertwines with your clan in Victoria and has 168 records across Australia, starting in Queensland and getting down to Victoria by 1931. Leslie James Morey is living in Bendigo today. The clan arrived in New Zealand 29 Aug 1875 on the SS Rodney and settled at Waiototara having departed 06 Jun 1875 from London Docks at Gravesend Chatham, KEN, ENG. They were from Cowes. Moving north over the century they mingle with many of the Waikato and Northland clans including KLN Back River, KLN Rakaia, and KLN Parua Bay. One by a later migration lives in the Hokianga.
KLN Sarah Balston is a small clan in New Zealand. It was at Waiototara with the KLN Mary Whittington Moreys, at Hawera with the KLN Hokitika Moreys and at New Plymouth with the KLN Back River Moreys. In Australia there are 378 records, starting with the Samuel Smith Morey marriage folio 3852/1859 and a raft of births around Sandhurst and Eagle Hawk. They moved up to the Riverina District mingling with your clan and KLN Back River and some live at Post Code 3125 with KLN Bernard Major. Both these clans are from West Dorset around Allington and Bridport.
KLN Sarah Counter was from North Dorset. Thomas Morey b. 1770 somewhere in Dorset and died 05 Dec 1824 Durweston, DOR, ENG and had married Mary Burtt 15 Nov 1795 Iwerne Minster, DOR, ENG. He had eleven children in various towns; Iwerne Minster, Tarrant Gunville, DOR, ENG and by 06 Feb 1814 was in Durweston, DOR, ENG, occupation Bricklayer. Durweston is a village in the Pimperne Hundred in north Dorset, England, situated on the River Stour where it flows from the Blackmore Vale through a steep, narrow gap between the Dorset Downs and the hills of Cranborne Chases, two miles west of Blandford Forum. It was named in the Domesday Book of 1086, as Derwinestone or Dervinestone, with references to a mill and vines. Its place name is unique, as no other settlement in the world owes its name to Durweston. Farming on Cranborne Chase goes back six millennia when trees were milled by the Neolithic people and the area farmed beyond its carrying capacity. The Blackmore Vale is a wide valley, in north Dorset, and south Somerset and southwest Wiltshire in southern England. The vale, part of the Stour valley is delimited by the Dorset Downs, a chalk ridge to the south; Cranborne Chase, chalk hills to the east; and the watershed between the Stour and Yeo valleys to the northwest which generally follows close to the borders between north Dorset, south Somerset and west Dorset. The River Stour flows out of the vale at Blandford Forum in the southeast, a town sandwiched between the Dorset Downs and Cranborne Chase. The river flows into the vale north of Gillingham. The River Stour 97 km long flows through Wiltshire and Dorset in southern England, and drains into the English Channel. It is sometimes called the Dorset Stour to distinguish it from rivers of the same name. The source of the river is at Stourhead, in Wiltshire. This is a dairy farming area where cheese has been made for millennia.

Frederick Edward Morey was a pearler on the northern Queensland Island Thursday Island, which has been populated for thousands of years by the Melanesian Torres Strait Islanders, who named the island Waiben, owing to the scarcity of fresh water. An administrative centre for the Torres Strait Islands was set up on the island by the Queensland Government in 1877and by 1883 over 200 pearling vessels were based there turning into a lucrative pearling industry by 1885, attracting workers from around Asia, including Japan, Malaya and India, seeking their fortune. Additionally, many south Pacific Islanders were also imported to work in the industry, many against their will. Frederick Edward Morey was on Thursday Island, when his daughter Dorothy Esther Morey was born there 16 Nov 1902. The pearling industry centred on the harvesting of pearl shell, which was used to make shirt buttons. Pearls themselves were rare and a bonus for the owner or crew. The boats used were a very graceful two-masted lugger with, a stern diver, one midships, and one diver off the bow. A manual air compressor was used. It looked like a yard-wide cube with two large wheels mounted one on each side. The waters of the Straits are murky and visibility was generally very poor. Depths of dive were not great except at the Darnley Deep which was 40 fathoms (240 feet). Attacks of the bends were common and deaths frequent.

My Morey line is from Northampton County, PA, USA. Where they came from before that, I do not know. The reason I was interested in Morey is because my great grandfather’s sister Mary A Butts or Butz m. Daniel Morey. I have the will of Daniel Morey, but it does not mention any of the family. I also have the Morey family on the 1850 – 1870 and 1880 census of Northampton County, PA, USA. I do not know the names of the girls who married into the Morey family. Will Extracts – Easton Library

I should have read the notes for Thomas Morey: He moved to NY at the beginning of the Rev. period. His name appears in the Calendar of NY Manuscripts as one of the signers of the "Association: Jun, 1775. The First Continental Congress adopted this agreement, no British goods were to be consumed, and no goods were to be exported to Britain. Prior to 1778, Thomas Morey was a resident of Albany Co. and a member of the 13th Reg. in the Albany Co. Militia under Col. Van Vechten. He later purchased 100 acres of farmland in Milton, Saratoga, NY. He was married 3 times but the first 2 wives are unknown. He mentions wife Sarah and children in will of 1810. Notebook 01 0038: Thomas Morey 1732 – 1810 came from RI to Dutchess County, NY, where he signed the Association Test 1775, removed to Albany and was a member of the 13th Albany Company Regiment, Colonel Cornelius Van Vechten. Morey 1717 Email 07 Inbox:
Little is known about Thomas’s early years. He married Sarah Crosby at the Newent Congregational Church at Lisbon, Connecticut on 26 Nov 1761. (Norwich Vital Records (Vol. 1: 110) and Lebanon Vital Records (1: 205). He was about age 29. Their first child Peter Morey was born about 1763 (Nelson Rural Cemetery inscription: Morey, Peter, died 02 Apr 1854, age 91 years.). Many genealogies have placed all of the children’s births at Providence, RI, USA and that he had two previous marriages. I still have found no evidence to support either of these conclusions.
Thomas settled in Amenia, Dutchess Co. NY. His name appears on the tax rolls of that area from 1770 thru 1776 with no tax roll data after 1776. It is possible that he may have settled there beginning in 1768, but the tax rolls of 1768 and 1769 are missing. His name does not appear on any of the tax rolls prior to 1767. Source: Amenia tax rolls 1740 - 1776,
www.ajcockrell.com/census/AmeniaNY/Amenia_1.html Thomas’s name is incorrectly transcribed on the 1775 rolls as Thomas Morris. We know, according to the "Calendar of New York Manuscripts", that his name appears as one of the signers of the "Articles of Association", Jun 1775 Amenia Precinct, Dutchess, NY, USA. From this we can assume some of Thomas’s children were born in Amenia, NY. These could be namely Samuel, Elisabeth and Miss Morey, with his first and second sons, Peter and Jonathan, born possibly in Connecticut. Thomas’s will verifies he had a young daughter, Miss Morey, but her name still remains unknown.
Prior to 1778, Thomas Morey moved about 100 miles North from Amenia to Easton, Albany, NY, USA, where he became a member of the 13th Regiment in the Albany County Militia under Colonel Cornelius Van Vechten. The 1790 census of Easton, Albany, NY, USA establishes Thomas and his eldest son Peter as heads of two households. He later purchased 100 acres of farmland in Milton, Saratoga Co. NY., where he and his second son Jonathan settled as farmers. Milton is about 23 miles Northwest of Easton and some 12 miles from his brother Jonathan's home at Stillwater.
The following is a transcription of the 1808 will of Thomas Morey, proved 12 Apr 1810. (Saratoga County Index of Wills, Book A :32). Some words that are partially visible, I have transcribed and placed in brackets and may or may not be correct. Several words are unreadable due either to poor copy quality or hidden in the volume’s binding. I have bracketed these with a question mark.

KLN Olive Milton is another Morey clan which came to New Zealand. I used to think it was my KLN Parua Bay via James Morey b. 14 May 1824 Kingston Upon Thames, SRY, ENG who married 04 Mar 1855 Hammersmith, MDX, ENG Sarah Of Hobart. Why we know an exact marriage date and not the bride’s surname is a puzzle. Two children were born in Malta, another at Aldershot, and two at High Wycombe. As far as Morey descendants go Alfred Henry Morey born 1851 Malta was the only one who had any. An engine driver, born in Malta, he was boarding at 20 Chester Terrace, Chiswick, MDX, ENG, 1881 aged 28, RG11-1350-92- 6, while his engineer driver's wife and three month old son were visiting the Broads at Sittingbourne, KEN, ENG, RG11-0976-16-26.
KLN Elizabeth Huet is a Morey clan which really had Tuberculoid Psychosis. It is a Dorset Morey family. You can rubbish me as much as you like. The fact of the matter is the Morey Forum is a work still in progress and you really know very little about it. Being fifteen pages long; as far as Morey clans go, KLN Elizabeth Huet too is miniscule, yet grandiose when compared with yours. Due to location it is more akin to you bedraggled mob of Moreys than mine: ie KLN Tremor. Remember we are dealing with nearly twenty five thousand pages of Morey Research.

Morey 1186 Email 02 Inbox" Recently I obtained a copy of the discharge papers for Joseph Morey (KLN Margaret Mullett), from the Kings Hussars. WO 97/97/15. He was discharged 10 May 1827, in Dublin, after 22 years and 140 days service, including Waterloo. This fits with the obituary of his son John Walter Morey of Brinscall. It does change his parents though. He joined the regiment 25 Dec 1804 aged nineteen. He was born Milton Abbey (Abbas) Dorset and was discharged aged 41 years for length of service and being "worn-out". He is described as five feet eight, light brown hair, hazel eyes and fair complexion. Searching the vital records index I have a baptism of Joseph Hewit MOREY 11 July 1884 Milton Abbas Dorset, f. John Morey, m. Elizabeth. FHL Film 1239231. [PE/MIL:RE 3/3] [MIC/R/557] Milton Abbas Marriages - 17 May 1828 Joseph Morey otp married Hiria Bussell otp.
There are several Moreys descended from Joseph Huet Morey (five) including Thomas Morey b. 02 Mar 1834, and John Walter Morey b. 26 Jul 1835 Milton Abbas, DOR, ENG, but we shall follow the latter:

At The Storming Of Sebastopol - Brinscall Army Veteran's Death
One of Brinscall's oldest and most interesting inhabitants passed away on Tuesday in the person of Mr. John Walter Morey of 47 School-lane. He was an army veteran, who claimed connection with some of the most famous military enterprises of this country, whilst his father's equally romantic career included an association with the Duke of Wellington in the Peninsular and Waterloo campaigns. Deceased was 76 years of age being born at Milton Abbas, Dorset, in June 1835. He came from old fighting stock, for his father who died soon after the birth of John Walter Morey served 24 years in the Army. This long period included fighting in the historic battles already mentioned. His son's earliest recollections were those of working on a farm at the munificent wage of 1s. per week, augmented by a liberal allowance in the shape of a dinner each Sunday! There were then no trade unions, and his hours of work were from light to dark. Unable thus to provide for himself, and being left an orphan at the age of 14, he took the course of two elder brothers and decided to enlist. His choice was the Navy, and he was first aboard on the training ship ''Ocean''. Subsequently he was drafted out to the Mediterranean on board the ''Trafalgar,'' and whilst there the Crimean War broke out. The fleet was ordered east, and the ''Trafalgar,'' a ship of 120 guns and 850 men, was the first of her class to enter the Black Sea. Not the least exciting of the experience in which he participated in this connection was that of the storming of Sebastapol, and he continued to be actively engaged till peace was declared. He was the proud possessor of three medals- the Turkish, Baltic and Sebastapol, with bar, which bore testimony to the worthy part he played in those stirring times. In 1873 Morey having been working as a labourer following his discharge from the navy, was seen by the manager of the Brinscall Printwoks, who went to Dorset to secure hands for work in Lancashire. Morey and his family thereupon came to Brinscall, where he worked up to the year 1907, when advanced age prevented his following his employment longer. The Old-Age Pensions Act having just come into force, Morey's entire income was derived from this source, apart from small sums he received from his children, all of whom are married, but in May, 1909, he was granted a further and well-earned pension of 5s weekly for life from the Veterans' Relief Fund of Lord Roberts. Prior to his death on Tuesday he had been in failing health, though he had retained his faculties to a remarkable degree. The Funeral takes place at Withnell Church to-day (Saturday).
Morey Forum Email 0700 04: There was a double wedding in Withnell in 1895, PR31/1/3 Marriages St. Pauls Withnell 13 Jun 1895 483. The tie between KLN Elizabeth Huet and Australia is due to convicts when after the Americans became anaesthetised by drinking tea with salt water; a dumping ground was sought by the Crown for people of the same ilk as New England and John Morey embarked 23 Dec 1798 on SS Hillsborough from Portland Roads, DOR, ENG ref:03 convict. The history of this you will know. I should add; those with Tuberculoid Psychosis made a go of it, but those transported were less lucky, and probably died of home sickness in a foreign land. John Morey arrived 26 Jul 1799 at Botany Bay, NSW, ENG. I salute him for surviving the rat infested journey in irons through the Southern Ocean, and I suppose I should acknowledge the bastards who got him there alive. William Hingston was the master of SS Hillsborough. Has anyone written a Historical Novel on this? It would need to be Bryce Courtney.
John Morey of the SS Hillsborough had a cousin William Morey Convict N1060 transported with him; who m, 11 Mar 1811 Launceston TAS, AUS Jane Wood; and d. V18481035 33B/1848 at Sydney, NSW, AUS aged 82 – all descendants were female.
One of this Dorset Morey family migrated to Quebec and some later went to Vermont and finally Florida, where Alvin Francis Morey was found in the white pages last year at Gainesville where he died 17 Apr 2009. Pierre Morey is living in Windsor Mills, Quebec; Chloe Morey is living in Newcastle Upon Tyne; Abigail Morey is in Marmaris, Mugla Province, Turkey; John W Morey was living 2006 in Bridport, Dorset; Paul J Morey m. Jun 2004 in Preston and South Ribble, Lancashire. This was likely in Chorley where a greater number of them live today. The Moreys in Springfield, Windsor, VT, USA have died out over the last forty years.
KLN Obediah is another Morey clan which came to New Zealand when Peter Henry Morey arrived here 17 Feb 1864 aboard the SS Swiftsure at Auckland. He died here in 1908 and was born 01 Apr 1839 Freshwater on the Isle O Wight. The clan might be KLN Mary Whittington, but none of the Morey researchers have found the link yet. I note a stray Samuel Morey who died here in 1867 does not belong to KLN Obediah due to his dying in 1917 aged 85 at Portsmouth. He had been a seaman. The New Zealand Morey researchers have pulled all electoral rolls from 1840 to 2008. The men got the franchise in 1879 and the women in 1893 and Peter Henry Morey was never on an electoral roll. I think gaol and a mental asylum are the only things preventing a person being on the roll So the clan never made a go of it here.
There are a few stray Moreys in New Zealand such as that Samuel d. 1867. There are more Australian Morey clans in Western Australia, some are West Country.
One is KLN Alice Payne starting with another William Morey; William John Morey 1851 aged 09 Brixham St Nicholas (HO107-1873-330-12), Devon, a nephew of William Owens who was married to Mary Shard. William Morey fits, B: 1841 and registered 1842-1Q St Caths 10 163 at Newton Abbot. A William Morey d. 1844-2Q St Caths 10 P at Newton Abbot and a Lucy Morey d. 1845-1Q St Caths 10 1 There is a spare William Morey marriage in 1841 which may have been to Lucy Shard or Owens.
There is quite a bit of stuff on William John Morey as he was mentioned in the South Australian Police Gazette 1873/63-66 at Port Adelaide, Mount Gambier, Blanchetown,
River Darling, and Bourke Town, having supposedly deserted his wife. The ship Princess Royal is also mentioned. He d. 20 May 1909 in Perth

William Alfred Morey d. 16 May 2009 Balga, WA, AUS. He was b. 26 Mar 1925 Bunbury, WA, AUS son of Eric William Morey and Francis May Hall. Born in Victoria, Australia, Eric William Morey lost his first wife at the end of the first war and on remarrying migrated to Manjimup in Western Australia where he worked as a sleeper hewer. He is mentioned on the Manjimup Memorial Hall honours board for the second war, but did not attend due to a hernia. He is buried in Allenby Park Cemetery, Albany, WA, AUS with his second wife. I think William Alfred Morey was their only son, which Second War Australian Morey Nominal Rolls show was born twice. He signed up by altering his birth year, but mummy intervened and later he signed up again in the RAAF:

And amongst this vast array of Morey data clear-cut from 23,000 pages of Morey research, only a miniscule part portrays evidence of your vast yet unknown Moreys in Australia and Somerset. The reason for this is they simply do not exist. They are a figment of your imagination.
