Re: MORFOOT/MORFICT/MORFORD??--NY

I found my ancestor, William Morford bn bet 1817-1822 NY as Manford and Mofford on the 1850-1860 census, and Moford (some of his Civil War records). I am now trying to find him on the 1830 and 1840 census. William married Mary/Polly Nelson and had several children. However, I am trying to find and prove his parentage. Info was given to me stating that Charles Morford who died 1849 Victor, Ontario, NY was his father, but according to the census, william is not Charles' son. Enid indicated this might be true, but she also could not prove it. Any help on this would be great. I will now search the other spellings of Morford -line by line again - on the 183- and 1840 census.

Roberta, I found William and Polly Morford on the 1850 census of Alexander, Genesee, NY. He was listed under the surname of Manford - went line by line and finally found them. Anna was listed there also. Not sure if I mentioned this to you before... Anyway, I now have them located in 1850 and thanks to you in 1860 - ever tho the surnames were wrong - it was definately them. I also looked up Gilbert Nelson (Polly's father) in the 1830 and 1840. What I can't figure out is the children listed on the 1830 and 1840 census. There was 1 extra female bet 5 and 10yr and 1 extra bet 20-30 yr. in the 1930 census. In the 1940 census, 1 extra female bet 10-15 yr(maybe the same one from the 1930 census) and 1 extra bet 30-40 yr (maybe the one from the 1930 on the 20-30 yr), but no one listed as 40-50 yrs which is what Candace would have been. However, it is possible that Candace died before 1940 as I don't have her death date. Will do some more searching on that. Pauli

yep - he is a tough one.... I found the census has him born in NY, also from 1817 -1825 as a birth year depending on the census year. Guess he couldn't remember when he was born. I have several Bells who married Morfords, - but as I can't connect William Morford, I can't say how they fit in. I can give you the names, if you want them. Pauli

Roberta, still am searching for parentage of William Morford. However, I find that according to his Civil War service record he enlisted at the age of 40 in the year 1862. Therefore, this indicates he was born about 1822 instead of 1817. There is also a possibility that he was born in Pennsylvania and not New York. I am now looking into other avenues including some of the Morfords from PA. Pauli

MORFORD, HENRY- author, etc..

Looking for Henry Morford scholar. Henry was an author- plus, born 1823 died 1881. I have collected many of his works and letters and want to speak/communicate to anyone who has done same, or who hails from his line. Henry was the son of William Morford (b. Sept. 23, 1796 d. April 28, 1868)and Elizabeth Willett (b. Feb. 14, 1794 near Bay Shore, N.J. d. Jan. 31, 1835). He grew up in Monmouth County, NJ but moved to Brooklyn NY in about 1856 where he was a newspaper editor, magazine editor, writer of novels, poetry, travel guides, plays, and many letters. He had a bookstore at 52 Broadway, and affiliated himself with many of the "power people" of his day, including Whitman, Hawthorne, and Tweed.

There are several mysteries that surround his life and work that I am trying to puzzle out. For instance he was buried next to his wife Blanche D. Morford see Tombstones found at the Cemetery Adjacent to the American Baptist Church, Kings Highway, Middletown, Monmouth County, NJ 69 Kings Highway, Middletown, NJ 07748-2001, USA (See http://distantcousin.com/Cemetery/NJ/Monmouth/AmericanBaptis...) BUT there is information that leads me to believe that a woman calling herself, Mary Morford, may have actually been his wife after Blanche.

ALL help appreciated.

Ken Cutler
Gandolf95@aol.com

Sarah Findley Morford was the first wife of Daniel Morford and she is buried in a cemetary a few miles south of Shelbyville. Her grave is in the row closest to the highway (Ind. route 9). Daniel is buried in the Summit Lawn Cemetary just south of Westfield, Indiana, as well as his son William Henry Morford, WHM's wife, and grandson Lewis Franklin Morford and wife Emma Carey. There are other Morfords whose remains are buried in this same cemetary, including some of my father's (Elbert Silas Morford) ashes; his site is on the front row of the cemetary by the road with people in the Horney family; ESM's wife was Harriet Horney and she was buried there also. My name is Norman Lewis Morford and I was born Dec. 12, 1934, in Ft. Wayne, Indiana. I married Pamela Ruth Patterson Dec. 19, 1958, in Dallas, Texas, and we have three adult children, Robert Horney Morford, Janet Hollis Morford, and Jill Patterson Morford. Each of them is married and has children. Pam and I have nine grandchildren and we will celebrate, God willing, our 50th wedding anniversary this coming Dec. 19, 2008.

I have the name Harold Charles Morford, on the copy of the marriage license, from Ohio. In the 1920 Fed. Census they were living in Los Angeles, and he was from Colorado. The LDS sight has him born in Salt Lake City, which is where they were married. I don't know any family names, and that might not really be his name.

Sorry

Jolene

Carol, can you tell me where you found the information that William is the son of Charles and Anne Finley? I had information from a Charles Morford in Iowa, but either he moved or died as he didn't respond to my question of proof. Any help would be appreciated. Pauli

Hello, What I am interested in is what Morford's went to Mercer County, PA. I am a descendant of the Morford's that came from New Jersey to York County, Pa then on to Coshocton, Ohio. I am wondering if my Morford line had went into Mercer County at any time before York county. I don't have a Sidney Morford in my tree. Could I possibly have your line?

In checking the censuses on Charles who we have as his father, Charles doesn't appear to have children the age of William.

I think most of my data on this line was from you to the Morford List a couple of years ago.
Jarratt Morford and Anna E. Annin

Jarratt Morford bn 1817 married Anna E. Annin bn abt 1816. Anna's father was Joseph Annin, but I can't find out anything else about her parents. I have several census of 1850, 1860 and 1870. It appears to me that Jarratt and Anna lost 2 children, George and Ann E, who were 3 and 1 respectively in 1850. These children do not appear in the 1860 census - children Esther age 8, George age 6 and Garrett age 1 appear. In the 1870 census another children Mary age 6 appears (with George age 16 and Esther age 18). Does anyone have information on the deaths of George and Anne who appear in the 1850 census or did they go to live with a relative? Also are Thomas and Esther the parents of Jarratt or are Thomas and his first wife, Sarah Taylor his parents? Thanks for any help you can give me. I am kin to both the Annin family and the Morford family.

John Thomas (Jack) Morford disappearance

I am looking for information on a John Thomas Morford, known as Jack. Our family lore has it, that after a divorce from his wife abt. 1930 he left the Upper Penisula of Michigan, and was to have moved to Montana. Fact is, he was never seen or heard from again. Family legend has it that his body was found many years later in a remote area of Montana, inside the car he left in back in 1930, and that it had gone over 40+ years undiscovered. Any information that could lead to the proof of the story would be much appreciated.

Pauli, Go to Rootweb.com and put in William Morford. When the next page comes up click on World Connect and when the page loads, go to the bottom and add b/d of 1817 and NY and Father Charles and info will come up. There are references on there. Think there are 6 different entries. I also probably have it in Morford History somewhere, but that will get you what you want.

Carol in WA

I am looking for information on a Joseph Morford and his wife Delila. Last known records of them are the 1850 census. They were evidently innkeepers, and had inns in both Coldwater in Branch and in Allen Twp. in Hillsdale Counties, and are listed in both documents.

Both documents also show them with a daughter named Cornelia born abt. 1845. All records stop after 1850.

Joseph was the son of Garrett Morford Sr. from New Jersey who settled in the mid 1830's in Moscow Hillsdale County.

Any info on the wherabouts of this family after 1850 would be greatly appreciated.

Rev. Joseph B. Morford

Is anyone familiar with Joseph Morford? He served in Wisconsin as a Freewill Baptist minister. I am President of the Wisconsin Freewill Baptist Historical Society and am trying to find descendants of deceased ministers, like I am, in the hopes of learning more about these people as well as possible orchestrating a “reunion” of the descendants of these ministers in 2008. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you!

At least two of the Mercer Co., ILL, MORFORD families moved to Humeston, Wayne Co., Iowa, about 1870-1880 time period and lived there for 40+ years.

Look at the 1860+ Mercer Co., Ill. census and then the 1870 and 1880+ Census for Wayne Co., IA. The Morfords are listed. I think you will find a JOHN MORFORD there, and I believe HIRAM T. is one of his sons.

HIRAM T. MORFORD m. my great-aunt Sophia A. Crosby, b. Ill., and her grand neice (Margaret/Maggie McCart) b. Humeston, IA, married a grand-nephew HAZEN HARRISON MORFORD. Another brother/uncle was I.C. MORFORD, -- there are more Morford brothers - will get them to you if you wish.

HIRAM T. MORFORD, his two brothers and his father all joined the Illinois Union Infantry. Hiram was known to be a heroic soldier and was promoted many times. He was in the Union's Grand Parade in front of Lincoln those first day after the war ended.

OK to contact me directly at jschilds@pacbell.net

My name is Harvey R. Morford and I was born and raised in Mercer County, PA. As I recall, there were only 5 or 6 Morford families living in Mercer, PA.

I suspect I could possibly be related to Jerome Morford. Given the fact he received the Congressional Medal of Honor, I would be proud to be a relative of his. My father's name was Gottliieb R. Morford and my Grandfather's name was John Morford who I did not know. My father was born March 2, 1895.

Morfords mentioned in will of James Brown of Vernon, Trumbull, OH

I recently received a will for James Brown who is buried in Giddings Cemetery, in Vernon Twp. Brown is a tough name to research and it was a longshot for me and turns out he is not who I was looking for, but, I thought I would post the information from it in hopes that it helps someone else. He is a War of 1812 veteran buried in Giddings Cemetery. Wife Hannah, Anne, daughter (Anne's last name looks like MUNER), Elizabeth Jones, daughter, Sarah Morford, daughter, Mary Ann Brown, daughter. Grand daughter's Hannah Jones and Sarah Jones. Sons Joseph Brown and James Brown. He gives his son Joseph "100 acres of land lying and being in pymatu?? township (probably pymatuning), Mercer Co. and state of Pennsylvania." (Joseph Brown is in Pymatuning Twp in 1850.) and he gives his son James the farm on which he now lives containging 225 acres in Vernon Twp.
Also mentions a son-in-law George Morford. Other names mentioned with no known relation are George Fell and Charles Reynolds.
I hope this helps someone else. I have the entire will if anyone would like any other information from it.
Pam
