Morlan Research from Iowa Genealogy Society

Years ago (mid to late 1990s) there was a researcher in Des Moines, Iowa named Larry Allan. He typed or hand wrote all of his research. He used bible records and visits to all the localities. He wrote for the Iowa Genealogy Society journals. I have 4 pages of some of his research (attached). Hope this helps with some of the Morlan questions. (he mentions 'Evaline Alwalt' I think this is just a misspelling on his part, should be: Awalt)

I think there is more than one Silas. The Silas who ended up in Iowa married Sarah Elizabeth Hunter.
I believe there were several Morlan families out of Tennessee.
Just be careful as you follow them westward.

The Silas Morlan in Iowa is more than likely not related to you. I believe he is the son of Elijah M. Morlan and Mary Boutman. Silas had brothers: Henry, Johathan, William and a 1/2 brother James.

Hi, I'm trying to do some family tree searching myself. My father is Steven Nix, son of Huey Nix and Phillis Warden. Huey Nix is son of Cecil Nix and Lucetta Morlan. Lucetta Morlan is daughter of Eliphas and Penelope Morlan. I was told that the family came from Co. Cork Ireland, and that there is still family there. I asked my grandfather who in the family would be the best to talk to about this stuff, and he told me to talk to Toodle (his first cousin) in AK. (I believe Aunt Toodle's last name is Jones) feel free to contact me if you have or need any more info. I'll check back in periodically.

Belinda Jones Morlan obit

I copied this from an online site a long time ago, I usually put where I got it but must have forgot.

Belinda C. Morlan, was born in Cacy county Kentucky, October 28, 1818, and departed this life February 7, 1901. She was therefore 82 years 3 months and 10 days of age. She was the oldest of a family of eleven children, seven of whom are now living. While she was quite young, her parents William and Abigail Jones removed to Washington County Indiana, and soon afterwards Putnam County, Indiana, where she passed the remainder of her early life. Was married to Henry Morlan August 11, 1836, came to Appanoose county Iowa, in 1852, where he died November 22, 1861, since which time she has remained a widow. To them were born five children four of which were present to administer to her wants during her sickness, and now to mourn the loss of a loving mother. Louisa Palmyra died when young, N.J. Morlan, W.E.L. Morlan, Mrs. Jane Butler and Mrs. Mary Owen survive her besides a host of other relatives. She had thirty-two grandchildren and thirty-one great grandchildren. She was a believer in the Primitive Baptist doctrine of religion, expressing her hope in Christ when 15-years old. Her whole life was marked by that of a true Christian character; a kind and loving mother, a devoted wife, and a good neighbor. Grandmother, as she was commonly called was known far and wide, and the great concourse of friends and relatives who visited her sick room only proved how sadly she will be missed from among us. Her sickness was of short duration. She had a sudden attack of la grippe, with partial paralysis on Saturday. Failing very fast her children and other friends were summoned, and every thing loving hands could do was done for the sufferer, but she could not abide with us longer, and on Thursday morning the Lord called her spirit home. The funeral was conducted by Elder Sawin, of Moulton, after which the remains were laid to rest in what is known as Jones cemetery.
Hello Bill, would this Joseph D. Morlan be the father of Orrien Eldoris Morlan, born in 1861 in Michigan? Orrien is my G-Grandfather. I have info from the 1880 Volinia, MI census but nothing back further than that. Also have a photo that shows Nett Riley with a young boy & girl that says it is Orrien's cousin. I would like to learn more about his family. If you could help, please contact me at bdvine 2580 at sbcglobal dot net. Thank you, Barbara

MORLAN - Silas, Washington - possible parentage

I've been looking for the parents of Silas (my ggg grandfather) and Washington Morlan. I have stumbled across Benjamin and Keziah (Harvey) Morlan many times and thought they might be the parents of both Silas and Washington. The data I've seen shows Silas and Washington being born in Hawkins Co. TN and the next place they're in is Parke Co. IN. Silas was married in Parke Co. to Sarah Elizabeth Hunter. One of their sons is Benjamin and a daughter is named Phoebe Kesiah (possibly after Keziah (Harvey) Morlan).

In the 1840 census, which appears on Ancestry, there is a record for a Benj. Morland in Parke Co. IN. There are 2 males ages "15 & under 20" and 1 male age "20 & under 30" plus one male and one female ages 60 & under 70. Without having names of all those in the household, I can only assume that the female is Keziah (Harvey) Morlan. The following are the children I have seen listed for Benjamin and Keziah (I listed what I believe are the married names of their daughters): Richard, Benoni, Elizabeth (Riddle/Ridley), Hannah (Smiley), Evan, Abigail (Hurley), Absolom, Malinda (Dobson) and John. I have found each of these children in the 1840 census records in their own households except for John, who I believe is the eldest of the 3 males living with Benjamin Morlan in 1840. That leaves 2 younger males who could be Silas and Washington. While the ages of these males are not specific in the census records they are in the correct category based on the years these males were born: John 1816, Silas 1822 and Washington 1824.

Does anyone know who the parents of Silas and Washington are if they aren't Benjamin and Keziah (Harvey) Morlan? DebbieWilliams28@msn.com

I found the following in the NJ Archives newspaper extracts. Does anyone know anything about him?

Feb. 7, 1772 Mansfield Township, Burlington Co. Five Pounds Reward. "Supposed to be taken out of the Subscriber's drawer this morning by [a person who calls himself William Morlan, but supposed not to be his real name] William Morlin, two joes and 11 half joes, one milled pistole, and about 20 pounds in paper money. Said Morlin is about 5 feet 10 or 11 inches high, aged about 27 years, a well set fellow, pitted with the small-pox, has lightish eyes and dark curled hair; had on when he went away a coarse hat, a blue surtout with cross pockets, a blue tight bodied coat, and blue double breasted vest, fine shirt marked H.R.; a striped silk handkerchief about his neck; and had four more of the same piece; buckskin breeches rather too short for him, redish brown and white mixed worsted stockings, new pumps, with yellow carved buckles in them. He calls himself this country born, but, from his dialect, is supposed to be a West-country man. Whoever takes up the said fellow, and secures hm in any of his Majesty's goals, so that he may be convicted of the theft shall have the above reward, and all reasonable charges, paid by William Shreve.

On June 1, 1772 in Philadelphia court William Morlan, alias William Newman alias William Blakely alias John Morlan was convicted of Grand Larceny and burnt in the hand.

Sharon

Hello Barbara,
Yes I believe that Joseph D. is the father or Orren (the spelling I have on record). I have Orren being born sometime after his brother Clarence who was born in 1859. I do not have a ton of info on Orren but I have Orren marrying Cynthia Welcher and them having a daughter Minnie M who married Verner Goodrich in Cass County Michigan on 9/4/1907.
I have also replied to your sbcglobal address.
Best regards,
Bill

I have some stuff on the Jones-Davis connection tho I am not sure how accurate it is but might be a start. I would love any information you may have, the info I have I recieved back in the 70's from Ruby Jones Davis tho it was compiled by someone else, tho I have been having a hard time finding info on the Morlans, I always believed that William and Henry were brothers but never found any proof of it. I did find Henry and Elijiah Morlan listed on the 1840 census for Warren township, Putnam County, Indiana.
I am also related to the Ferren's, who married into the Atwell family.
I don't know if this will be of any help, but there is a Silas Morlan listed in the Appanoose County, Iowa Census, if I remember right he was there in both the 1870 and 1880.

I am also researching the Morlan family in Mecosta County, MI. I am looking for more info on Nathan Morlan (m. Edna G. ?) Nathan had 4 siblings: Emmett, AJ, Martin and Jennie. I believe his mother's name may have been Maria or Mina? Census record is hard to read. I'd appreciate any information available. Thanks so much.
