hello friend,

I took interest in your post because of the name Thomas Morley. My Great grand father's name was Henry Ethelbert Morley.

He came to Papua New Guinea as a miner and I have no idea what vessel he came on or what country he travelled from. All i know is that he was English. Would you have anyone by this name as Thomas Morley's brother or relative?

It is of interest to us because when Henry Ethelbert Morley married here and had children he named his only son Thomas Morley and the rest of his daughters, Maude, Lucy, Ethel, Ettie and Louisa Morley. Lucy is my grand mother. Their father died here in Milne Bay in a mine shaft on one of our islands.

Your information will be of great help to me.

thanks
Shiralee Sariman(nee Warren)

Re: Morleys of Sutton-in-Ashfield, Notts, UK

Hello,

I've only recently come across these postings, but I am also researching the Morleys of Sutton-in-Ashfield, and would like to make a request for further information - as well as hopefully adding something to what has already been posted.

In terms of background - Sampson Morley was my gt gt grandfather. He married Hannah Thorpe at Kirkby-in-Ashfield on 25 Dec 1834, and as far as I'm aware they had 8 children (I can supply further details if necessary). I was aware that Sampson's parents were Thomas and Catherine Morley, but I could find no details of their marriage or baptisms within Nottinghamshire - so I found the post from trisha, giving Catherine's surname as Hibbert, with a marriage in Chesterfield on 12 May 1805, most interesting. I've subsequently noted this on the IGI/LDS site. It certainly all seems to fit - but I just wonder if trisha (or anyone else) has any documentary evidence to show that the Thomas and Catherine who married in Chesterfield, are indeed the couple who fathered Sampson et al in Sutton-in-Ashfield. Why did they move? If anyone can provide this information - and if anyone could give me details of the next generations back, I'd be most grateful.

Turning to the information I can provide, Thomas and Catherine's 7th child is important to me - Eliza Thorpe Morley - born 03 Jan 1848. On 02 Apr 1872 she married ny gt grandfather William Wildsmith at Sutton in Ashfield, and they had 3 children - Joseph, and John William - born in S-in-A in 1873 and 1876 respectively - and Albert, who I think was born in Belper, Derbyshire. Anyway, all 3 were baptised in Belper on the same day - 18 Feb 1880 - with Albert dying young later in 1880.

John William Wildsmith was my grandfather - he died in Stafford in March 1961 at the ripe old age of 85. But enough of the Wildsmiths - this post is about the Morleys.

Back to Sampson - as I understand it, Sampson was the 6th of 10 children born to Thomas and Catherine Morley. I agree with most of the post from trisha, back on 25 Nov 2005 - but I don't think Elizabeth was born in 1812(rather I think it was Eliza) - I have an Elizabeth born in 1926. And in adition I have found a Frederick, born in 1822.
My full list is:
James - bap 05/05/1806
John - bap 18/07/1807
Thomas - bap 06/03/1809
Allen - bap 30/12/1810
Eliza - bap 25/10/1812
Sampson - bap 18/02/1815
Alfred - bap 02/01/1817
Catharine - bap 02/05/1819
Fanny - bap 24/12/1820
Frederick - bap 02/06/1822
Elizabeth - bap 26/02/1826.

All of the above baptisms are recorded in S-in-A to Thos/Thomas & Catherine/Catharine Morley.

I have further details of the marriages and children of many of the children of Sampson & Hannah. If intrested, please ask.

I think Thomas died and was buried on 01/04/1832 in S-in-A, aged 55 years (from a CD of Nottinghamshire BMDs I've got).

I've then found a Catherine Morley living in the Broxtow Hundred of S-in-A in the 1841 Census (aged 57) - with Elizabeth Morley (presumably her youngest daughter? - aged 15). Catherine indicates she wasn't born weithin the County - which seems to tie in with trisha's info.

I can't then pin down Catherine in the 1851 census - although I have found a burial of a Catherine Morley in S-in-A on 19/04/1858 - aged 73.

I'm not sure if this information is of use to anyone, but I'm happyto share - and would love to find out more about the Morleys etc.

Regards,
David

Does this Morley family look familiar to anyone? ...
Joseph Morley b. 1883 in Hartlepool (son of Abel Morley b.1850 Derbyshire).

Joseph Morley married Mary Jane Cookson (sometimes spelled Cuckson) in Sunderland, UK in 1904. Was a widow. They had children Abel Morley b 1907, Joseph b 1909, Lilian b 1913 and also Stanley.
I understand Lilian married in 1959.

Hello - I realize this is a very old thread... My grandmother was Ellen Mary Morley (called Ella), born in Ireland in 1895. Is she possibly the sibling? Her petition for US Citizenship says she was born in Cork. She emigrated to the US in 1913.

Ellyn

Hi,
I am part of the michigan morley group. We were busy and roving at times. I have some papers and such because my mother is the only survivor of Floyd Morley. My mother still owned the house in new troy, mi. until 12 years ago.
I would love to buy it back. We used to visit when I was small. My dad and brother are buried there too. Would love to compare notes.
Robin

Hi,
Not as old as dirt yet. I would very mcuh like to trade family pieces if we are related. Thomas died young, and though I have the names of his children, my kin being among them, no one can pin down what happened to his wife. Supposedly her maiden name being we think Kinne. She supposedly lived until 100, more or less. I know from my side the Morleys were sometimes rovers, so I don't know where to look except for penn.
Thanks a bunch for answering an old thread.
Robin

Hi Janette Cline.

This is very strange, I have not looked a this account in years, but I just got off the phone with my sister in Montana about using back-up memory sticks. Her friend last night lost all of her family photo due to a crash. She ask if I was still using this Yahoo Account anymore, she was going to send some family photos before she download off her hard drive. I said not very often but will check it out.

RE: So tell me more about Abner Morley, He has been hard to find data on during my research of years ago. I come from his son Leonard side of the tree. All I know is that he married Amanda Allen in 1803 and they move to Smryna, NY.
But very little mention after that. Did he fight in the War of 1812? or Work on the Erie Cannel? or became a drunk?
or fail farmer? It seems the family split up in the Mid-1830 or Early 1840. One son Calvin had wrote to Leonard in mid-1840 and he had visit their father in up state NY? But by 1850's Amanda was Living with Leonard in Winfield, IL. and had be married to Mr. Crosby? Other brothers by then most had moved to Viroqua, WS.

Hey thanks Grant

I’m afraid I don’t know of a Harrington or a Shields connection (other than the Morley family’s entirely coincidental connections with the towns of North Shields & South Shields). As you probably know, Viscount John Morley lived from 1838 to 1923. His father Jonathan Morley, 1808 to 1862, was a surgeon in Blackburn. One wonders if the obituary’s reference to “Sir” John Morley, a surgeon in Blackburn, might possibly be a confused mixture of the two men. I’m quite sure the Blackburn surgeon, whose name as you can see was Jonathan not John, was never knighted or made a baronet, honours that would attract the title “Sir”. As well as the son who became a Viscount he had two other sons, Edward Sword Morley (1828-1901) who also became a surgeon in Blackburn, and William Wheelhouse Morley (1840-77) who wasn’t a medical man. I'm quite sure none of the three sons had a son John.

You don’t give any dates, but the Napoleonic Wars were 1803-15, and I’m afraid Viscount Morley’s family is a mis-match to that. His grandparents Jonathan & Grace baptised their children, who included a John & a Jonathan, between 1796 and 1808. They started doing so in South Shields but moved to the Heptonstall & Mytholmroyd area of west Yorkshire, which for Jonathan was returning, because he had been born in that area and his roots lie there. Their son John, my ancestor, raised his family nearby in Sowerby & Halifax, and their son Jonathan, the Viscount’s father, raised his in Burnley, Lancs. I’m afraid I simply can’t see how this family could have a Swaffham connection. I believe Jonathan, bap 1773, had a brother John, bap 1770, but I know nothing about him, and he could not possibly have had a son old enough to have been a captain in the Napoleonic Wars.

Jan, I still can't be sure! Our relative was born in London in 1870, and was married twice, as best I can tell. He had five children, all of whom seem to have been born out of wedlock. One of these children was named Victor Britton Morley. He also seems to have been married twice. I have found no children from either of these marriages; however, the LYING part of your story may have been a family trait, because the man I am trying to trace seems to have done a bit of that! I am continuing to search and will contact you if I find anything that might be of interest to you.

Those are the exact conclusions I've come to. There must have been some confusion between Jonathan the surgeon and John the viscount. John the viscount fits the age range well for a cousin. I can't figure out the where the Shields are from but maybe they are from Shields...? I have 2 different obits, one says she was kin to John Morley, the other says 1rst cousin.

I have an obituary for my Great Great grandmother stating she was first cousin to a Sir John Morley, surgeon from Blackburn. Her name was Mary E. Shields. She came over to the states sometime before she was married, which was in 1883. I have researched John Morley the Viscount, whom would have been about the right age to be her 1rst cousin, but can't find the connection. I know also that his dad was a surgeon. Have you seen her name during any of your research?

Hi Faith, Excellent... could well be a family trait. I do have other details but would prefer not to put them on this thread. The only other clue I have, but it may be a red herring, is that my Grandfather was a preacher. The only Morley, who is/was a Preacher, is a T Morley but the dates do not marry up and he disappears from the registers early on. There is a wedding photo but I am not sure that any of my Fathers relatives attended as I can identify most of the front row! Please contact me by e-mail on janlaw21@yahoo.co.uk and I will send a couple of photos to you to see if they match anything you have, I will also send some other information that may help of living relatives and my Fathers known past.
John Victor Morley

I am Janet Morley dob Jun 1958, My Father was John Victor Morley, which is what my birth certificate says! My mother was Mavis Daphne Overill dob April 1931. My Father had a son Alan by a previous marriage/relationship, me by his second relationship and at least one child by a following relationship. I can trace nothing about him, except after much digging I have found the marriage records with my mother. My mother says she was never sure when his birthday, or even year of birth, was. I believe that his father was a preacher but have no names. I do have my parents wedding photo though. Any help appreciated so I can find the missing link to the rest of the family.
Hi, Thanks for the reply. My father was known as Vic although his name was (I believe, but he may have been lying!) John Victor. Married to my Mother in the 1950's and was living in Romford, London. This was his second marriage as far as I know. He was a few years older than my mum but we do not have a date of birth or even year of birth. He had a micro engineering business near/in Romford. Does this sound like it may be the right person?

Jan

William Morley was my father's uncle. He was coming to America to stay with his brother, Arthur Morley of Sacramento California. It is my understanding that William was eventually traveling on to Australia. My father, born in April of 1915, in Sacramento, was named after his uncle who lost his life on the Titanic.
