Wister Mormon

Classification: Query
Surnames: Mormon, Carnes, Bates, Sellars, Strickland, Atkerson, Salley
My grandparents were James Wister and Minnie Jones MORMON. They lived across the highway from Tom Carnes. Their children are Jessie, Martha, Grace, John and Jean. Jean is my mother.
I remember Tom and his sister. I do not know the problems between the families. I do know my grandparents had family reunions that people from Mississippi, Louisiana, and Arkansas attened each year. My grandfather died in 1960 at the age of 91. So, I gather the reunions stopped around then. They have a MORMON reunion the Saturday before Labor Day at Duckhill, Mississippi. I had attended it twice. Several of the people that I knew have died. I had been in touch with several people who have MORMON family connections. I would like to meet some of these people. Maybe when I retire that will be possible.

There are several people that I know in Hamburg who decend from William Edgar MORMON. They are from his daughter Angela MORMON who married Thad Bates.

I have wondered why my grandfather never mentioned his uncles that are buried in the Troy Cemetery? This is only about 10 miles from my grandparents' home.

I found a book in the Winona, Mississippi, library where James C., William, Jesse, and Hillsman MORMON were in the Civil War. They were all sons of James and Millie MORMON.

Mary Elizabeth MORMON married Harmon Sellars. Sylica Jane MORMON, who married W. W. Strickland, is buried in Troy cem. also. I understand W. W.Strickland met the MORMON brothers in the war and brought him home to meet their sister.

I have found no information on James C. Mormon. I found Martha, Samantha, Wilson A.mentioned in the 1880 census for MS. Wilson A is age 10, the same age as my grandfather, Wister. I have never heard this name mentioned. I do know that my grandfather had a double-first cousin, Ada Atkerson. Grandpa said they were rocked in the same cradle. Ada married J. J. Salley.
