My name is Thomas Francis Morrin. I'm from Co. Mayo in Ireland.
Most Morrins are located around the Cong / Cross / Clonbur area of Mayo with a small scattering throughout the rest of the country.
Many records were 'destroyed' by an odd assortment of fires and misdoings so information is hard to come by. Unless the family had wealth, few records were kept until they passed through a port.
I have heard of a few different origins for the name. French Huguenot 'Moran' is unlikely. Spanish 'Morin' is possible-ish but Siberian Morrin is the most apt. This makes is a Viking name and is fairly accurate with the time lines for it's appearance in Ireland. It means 'of the long hair' or strong, or powerful. (Long hair was a symbol of power and strenght)
Someone seen my name and told me to look you up. Ha! Funny.
Now you know what I know. There must be a million Morrins in Canada of Russian ancestry.
Good luck.

My grandfather Thomas Eugene Morrin was born in Tamworth NSW Australia, his father Thomas Francis Morrin from Ireland married Mary Daly in Derbyshire, Mary was the daughter of Patrick Daly, Derbyshire, they emmigrated to Australia in 1877 on the ship Commonwealth, Mary's parents also emmigrated on the same ship at the same time. Mary was fifteen at the time of marriage, On board with them they had two children Thomas 1 yr old and Anne infant. They later had Francis who died four months before Mary in 1882 in Tamworth, they died of typhoid fever. Thomas Francis married again Catherine Naomi Rooney, they also had children. I believe Thomas Francis Morrin's father was John Morrin, Schoolteacher, I was told they came from Mayo. Any help will ber appreciated. Thanks Betty Bassett.

You may also be able to get the film number from the family history library in Salt Lake and order the film...I may also have contacted the local parish priest with a request for the records and I would have enclosed a small donation. I would still like to hear from Catherine Morrin since I have that name on my database.

Pat H.

I don't have any dates or silbings names----nothing. Anyone that can give me information on my family is long gone without leaving any information. The only reason I posted Kings County was because it was listed on my gr grandfather's Civil War information as to place of birth. The Moran/Morin/Morrin name came from St Mary's Catholice Church in Marshall, Calhoun County, MI, where my gr grandfather, Dennis Dunn, was married. I have not been able to go back any further, I wish that I could.

I'm very interested in the Morrin/Dunn connection. Kings County is today called Co. Offaly, which is where my Peter Morrin was from. I have recently suspected that my Dunn family came from there also though I have no proof yet. My Peter Morrin was a tenant farmer and part of his acreages was sublet to a Dunn...I'll have to have a researcher check it out. My oldest Dunn, great, great grandfather was James Dunn and came to America and married in NH, first son was born in RI, they moved to Toronto, Ohio and finally settled in Muscatine, IA.

My great grandmother, Mary Morrin, had two sisters, Catherine and Bridget; however, their father's name was Peter and he married Margaret Brennan. I have a lot of church records and there were several that may have been brothers of Peter....I need to dig out that information. You may email me offline and we'll work on sorting this out. Rathangan is very near Clonbullogue and very conceivable that Thomas was a brother.....the same names tended to be used in Irish families.

I am one of a large extended family of Morrins originating in North Kildare and all of whom are descended from an Edward Morrin who was born in East Offaly. In about 1850 he rented land in Donore, not far from Naas Co. Kildare. That was 6 generations ago. The family still farm that land. You may find that Peter Morrin came from the same parish.

MORRIN from Dublin to Birkenhead, Cheshire

Hi,
I am tracing to trace descendants of Isaac MORRIN born c1848 Dublin, Ireland. He married Louisa Ann WYER in Birkenhead, Cheshire about 1870 and had several children all born between 1870 & 1881 as far as I know.
Benjamin, Anne, Emily, Isaac, Frederick, Samuel (died an infant), Mary.
I have no record of any of them after 1881 except that Isaac senior was still in Birkenhead in 1905 as a joiner.

Do you have a missing Isaac from this period - the family are cnnected to Dillon's also, another Irish name but family says with links to Killarney.

Hope to hear soon,
Sue.
I, too, have a gggrandfather named James H. Dunn. I have not been able to pinpoint where in Ireland he came from, but am becoming convinced that it was from Kings County (Offaly). My ggrandfatehr, William T. Dunn married Mary Morrin (b. Clonbullogue IR) and I find that her parents had a tenant on their farm named Dunn...lots of Dunn/Morrin weddings. Can't prove it..do you have any more information than when you last posted?

Pat

Hello Dermot,

WE have had communication about our Morrins in the past when I was going to Ireland to research in 1999. I did meet with your Uncle Leo and wife at Donore. They were most gracious. I alsmo met Liam Morrin and family that day. I have two Edward's in my data base...one married to a Margaret O'Shaughnessy and another to an Ann Sterhough....either one of these Edwards the same as
yours? One of them may have been brothers to my Peter.

Would like to hear from you again.

My Morrin's came from county Mayo. My grandmother Bridgit was born there in the late 1800's. Her father John brought the family to upstate New York. They settled in Cambridge, NY in an area known as Irish Lane. Thomas's wife was Mary Casey. They are both buried in Cambridge,NY. The spelling of the last name was changed before they left Ireland to Murrane. They still pronounce it as if it were Moran. I have tracked family down in the area of Fort Edward, NY who still use the spelling of Murrane.

My grgreatgrandparents--James Dunn & Maria Morin/Morrin were from Kings Co. I know Maria migrated with one of her sons, my grgrandfather, Dennis Dunn about 1853. They settled in Calhoun Co., MI. I know Maria was there in 1867/68 because she is the godmother to my grandfather, Martin Dunn. I don't know anything else regarding James Dunn & his wife Maria Morrin. Can anyone make a connection with me? Dennis married a Catherine Salmon in 1865 and had 3 children. I also think that Dennis had a brother by the name of James b. 1831 and Dennis b. 1840. I don't know of any other siblings.
