I have this note - not sure who gave it to me:
Mentions: James, John, Shadrack, William G. (Gideon? I don't think so...William GREENE h/o Charolette Hunter)
1783-1890 Greene Co. Wills (will of William Morris)
I have Charlotte's parents as Thomas Hunter and Caty Shaffer.
Charlotte Hunter Morris had possible sons: James, George, John, William Nelson and dau Elizabeth.
I do NOT have this info documented.
I also have these notes (I've left off the names of the researches because I don't have permission to quote them.)
All of ther other children, besides John, stayed in Newton & McDonald Co, MO, I think.
I have information n on the descendants of Mary Catherine MORRIS MARTIN, William Nelson MORRIS, and George Washington MORRIS.
In gathering this info, I've come across some things that may be of interest to this list. In Greene Co. TN Tax Digests 1809-1817, complied by Goldene Fillers Burgner, there is listed: "Morris, Drury, 200 [acres?] Roaring fk."
On 1796 Greene Co, TN tax list: Shadrack Morris, 800 acres, and Daniel Morris, 50 acres.
Speculation: William G & Charlotte's oldest son was John, possibly named after William's father? Possibilities include: John MORRIS, who fought in the War of 1812, and married Sally? John MORRIS, born about 1764, son of Hammond MORRIS and Mary TUTTLE? Second son was William Nelson MORRIS -- a connection to the NELSON family?
Hi Geri: William Green Morris' gravestone (clearly up quite a while after his death) says "1806-1863," and Charlotte's says "1811- ca. 1876"
(again, clearly put up later). I have settled on about 1802 for William and about 1812 for Charlotte based on 1850 and 1860 census data.
There is also a "Greene Morris" on the 1840 Greene Co. census that shows wife and children of the right ages to be William Green Morris. The date I have for their marriage is 1833, which would make Charlotte in her early 20s and William in his early 30s -- a little old for William, but
perhaps it was his second marriage. If so, I haven't found any trace of his earlier wife or children.
As to land records, I've used deeds and the 1850 census to establish this family's connection to the Thomas and Catherine Hunter family. These sources haven't turned up great Morris leads, though. (And I haven't tried
Nelsons yet.) Possible Greene Co. Morrises that could be William's parents include: John Morris who was between 40 and 50 on the 1830 census, who may
well be the same John Morris who is between 50 and 60 on the 1840 census; and Rebecca Morris, apparently a widow, who is 40-50 on the 1830 and 50-60 on the 1840. Also Elijah Morris, who is 40-50 on the 1830 and 50-60 on the
1840.
As to the mention in the Grainger Co. will -- that would have been when my William was a very small child -- not impossible, but I wouldn't a young child's parents would be named in the will, too? Perhaps not...
THIS IS NOT MY LINE and is all the info I have there.
Good luck
