We have had much difficulty tracking down the various Morrow settlers in Westmoreland Co, Penna. The lines are obscure and confused. Julia Anna Morrow is the starting point for us - born 1814 in So. Huntingdon Twp; parents possible John and Frances, born in Ireland.

If you have any Westmoreland Co Morrow information, please contact me.

Bill Brobst
Brobst-Hager@embarqmail.com

Thankyou Helen,
during this research a person has given me another name that seems to be a child of Isaac and Rachel Davis. That is James Benjamin Davis.Died Balmain Sth NSW.D8508/1904 parents Isaac and Rachel Davis.James married Ellen Walsh in 1869.I have more info on their children etc if you would like it.The name James does fit with James being the name of Rachel's father.
I have researched this family thinking they may be my ancestors through their son Solomon Davis. They have wonderful biblical names and I would dearly like them to be my ancestors but I am beginning to doubt it.
Thanks again/Joanne

Hi Joanne,

Not sure to what extent I can help, but:
Rachel is not claimed by the family of the other Morrows on board the Elizabeth.
I need to check the shipping list for further details, but it is suggested that her father was James.
It is also suggested by a descendant of the family, that she is the Rachel Morrow who married Isaac Davis at St Andrews Sydney, N.S.W., on 18 January 1847 (Jane Ekins the sister of my gggrandmother Maria Morrow, nee Ekins, was one of the witnesses).
Rachel and Isaac had the following children:Abraham b. 2 Nov 1847 Sydney, d. 28 Jan 1904 Carlton, Vic.
Elizabeth b. 1852 Sydney
Isaac b. 1855 Sydney, d. 1878 Sydney.
Solomon b. 1857 Sydney, d. 1890 East melbourne, Vic.
Rachel b. 1859
Rachel b. 1862
and John b. 11 Mar 1865 Kent St., Sydney.

Hope this helps. Will contact you further if I can learn anything more.

Jon.

Since my last posting in '02, I have learned that GWM had 3 daughters as well as the son James (my line) with wife Easter Simmons. They were in Cherokee Co NC in 1870 with Daughters Mary, Martha and Easter/Esther. They lived near another James P Morrow family (who eventually moved to the reservation in OK). Only Mary and Martha appear on 1880 census records with GW and Easter (the mother) in NC/Leicester township. I have been unsuccessful in finding out what happened to GWM, Easter or their daughters since 1880. There were some who thought that GWM's wife was Cherokee, named Swmino. However, in reviewing their son James' death certificate, I read Mother's last name as Simmons. All members of this line were born in NC, SC or GA.

Janean,
Major Samuel Morrow Jr b. 9 Mar 1760 was son of David and Mary Morrow of Fishing Creek, later they lived at Spartanburg SC. This David was born between 1715-1730 probably in Princess Anne Co, Va. He and wife (Mary) appear in 1790 Spartanburg SC census neighbors to "Old Samuel Morrow" and then Capt Samuel Morrow.
Old Sam and David b.1715 "of Spartanburg" were most likely brothers since they lived adjacent at Fishing Creek 1775-1779 and then at Spartanburg area 1779 thru 1790.
Major Sam being the son of this David was proven by DNA. Deeds proved Major Sam was a nephew of "Old Samuel". Since they lived close together, Major Sam went by Jr and Old Sam went by Sr as was the custom for those times. Becaude of this, for many years this Major Samuel was thought to be the son of "Old Samuel Morrow" d.1796 at Spartanburg. Aslo, for many years Old Sam was thought to have married Mary McClure since Major Sam stated in his pension papers that Cap't McClure who was killed in the Rev War "was a kinsman". Mary McClure was most likely Cap't McClures widow. Mary McClure (widow) is shown in the 1790 Chester SC census, and Old Sam appears in 1790 SPartanburg SC census, "apart, so not married" --she was widow with seven children. I believe the McClures were kin to Major Sam's wife, Jenet Nelson, rather than the Morrow line. Major Sam's application was 1820's or 30's when he made the statement that Cap't McClure was a kinsman.

So no, Major Sam was not the son of Old Sam and Old Sam was not married to widow Mary McClure.

David of Waxhaw whose wife was Agness White also had a son named Samuel. Samuel was a pretty common name in those days.
I looked back at the list of David & Agness's children, and there is a comma between James and Arthur.

Hope this helps.

Bill

I have spent 30 years gathering the following info which was hard to come by.
Since he died in 1785, David of Waxhaw didn't make the 1790 census nor the earlier SC census which "Old Samuel" appears. The only documentation I found was pg 9m of SC archives file 5360 as follows: (my copy I purchased from SC ..was not free..and very hard to read) "Waxhaw..January 11th 1786...Gentlemen please deliver to Hugh White this indents App??(application?) to be to the Estate of David Morrow deceased from the state of South Carolina or from the United States as is Receipt shall be your sufficient Discharge of the same from your ?? to the Commissioners of the publick Treasury of South Carolina...signed Agness Morrow, Robert Davis Exers..Acknowledged the date above before me Andw Foster JP".
Another written record mailed to me in 1986, dated 1949 by Harvey M. Morrow, great grandson gives David Morrow and wife Agnes White's children's names plus following generations down to Harvey, who was an Alabama school superintendent and who died 1949 shortly after he penned his lineage. I give credence to his written record because he was learned.

Of course Worth Ray's Tennessee Cousins pg 275 gives lineage of David of Waxhaw. To be taken with salt. Ray has a different version in another of his books, that David of Waxhaw descended from Walter Morrow d.1709 Md. rather than Daniel > Alexander. No children were given the name Walter so I really don't think he was in this MOrrow line at all.

Bill Morrow of Oklahoma

Janean,
Samuel b.9 Mar 1760 was not a child of this David d.1785. Son Thomas was born 1765. Arthur and James were separate children, those times did not see double given names. Joseph b1760 was son as was David b.1762 and Thomas b1765 because DNA places them most likely as brothers, but others I can't vouch for.
Yes, Mr Ray had alot of mistakes in his works (so do I) and did not document very well at all, most times totally omitted any source, so take his work with a grain of salt. But use his works, sometimes it is all we have to work with.

Bill
Janean,
It's been awhile. I see you are still pursuing your
Morrow line.
Here are the children of David Morrow d.1785 who married Agnes White and is buried at Waxhaw:
Samuel, David, John, Joseph, Robert, Adam, George, James Arthur, Thomas, Mary, Margaret. (exact order as written)
source: May 24,1949 lineage by Harvey Morrow d.1949. Harvey also corresponded with Worth Ray and mention appears in Tenn Cousins pages 275-277.
So yes, DAvid of Waxhaw did have a dau Mary and it's likely she was born circa 1760.
Hope this helps. Should have gotten it to you sooner.

Bill Morrow of Oklahoma

My husband, kids, and I have been to the Old Waxhaw Presbyterian Church Cemetery (near Lancaster, SC) where David Morrow is buried. We found and etched his tombstone. A small nugget of information: He is buried right next to Andrew Jackson Sr., the president's father.
John Marlin was from Londonderry. But then again I show David as born in Lunenburg Va so guess it couldn't be. Unless Mary really wasn't born in Ireland. They all ended up in Chester Sc though. Sure wish I could find her connection.

Janean

I believe she wouldn't be the daughter of the other David only because all of the collateral names in that family don't match. They all intermarried within another group of people. McClure, Frame, Catlett, Armstrong, Allen, etc. David and Agnes's son Joseph marrieg a Wylie and brother David married a Kelso. I don't have marriages for any other sibling but these families intermarried: Morrow, Wylie, Kelso, Marlin, Adams etc. This is the line I'm interested in as my Mary Morrow b. abt. 1760 married John Marlin b. 1750/60. Their grandchildren intermarried with Wylies and Adams. My families ventured onward to White Co. IL where the other Morrows and associated families went south to AL, MS etc.

Janean

Hi Bill long time no talk to. Anyway, as it is easier to talk in the list, even though this goes there, I will reply to this msg. board anyway.

I did NOT have these kids in this order and you have two I didn't have and visa versa.

I had them as follows: Samuel 9 Mar 1760, David 1762, John 1758, Joseph 1760, Adam abt. 1764, George abt. 1766, James abt. 1771, Thomas abt. 1773, Margaret abt. 1775, William abt. 1756 and Richard abt. 1769.

I did not have Robert or Mary and you are showing James as James Arthur? It is HIGHLY possible I instered the dates I knew I had and guessed at the rest just for placement purposes. Don't know where I got William and Richard from.

They were married I show in 1756 and seems odd that Samuel was their first but not born for 4 years after their marriage putting them at 30 before they had kids? Unless they lost children that just seems odd. Obviously Sam and Joe could be born the same year unless twins and Joseph only guess at his birth year and considering you state this information came from Harvey Morrow who corresponded with Worth Ray...... whose information I am told to take with a grain of salt...... how can we be sure of this? Now doubting just inquiring. What are your thoughts. you can post to the list instead if that is easier. I always thought Mary was possibly Josephs sister. I will "temporarily" attach her to this family with a precaution it is no way proven.... just so I have a place for her.

Janean

I'm confused. You say Samuel born 9 Mar 1760 is not David's son. However you list a Samuel. I have another Samuel born 1760 s/o Samuel Morrow and Mary McClure.

I'm assuming when you say James and Arthur are two different people you just forgot to put the comma in, is that correct? I don't know about the 1760's but in 1795 my ancestor was John Morrow Marlin. I have several people back in the mid 1700's with double given names, or more commonly known as a middle name. I know it wasn't as common as it is today and actually people who don't have a middle name are greeted with surprised looks by others.

Now questioning you or anyone else but it seems one just doesn't know who is right or wrong in this particular line. It's exhausting, isn't it?

Janean

I just discovered that my great-great grandmother was Margaret (Maggie) Marrow, (full or part American Indian?) born 1861/62 in Missouri or Illinois (or ?), witnessed the burning of Atlanta in 1864, married George Simonson (Evans?), her husband or father was a horse trader, by 1920 she was a servant in a private house in Dayton, Ohio; died between 1920 and 1930. I need proof she was American Indian.
