My direct ancestor, Anderson MORTON, was born in Montgomery County, Virginia in 1814 (according to his Civil War pension papers). The only MORTON family living in Montgomery Co, VA during the 1810 census was one John MOURTON (26-45 years of age, b.1765-1784). However, according to the International Genealogical Index (IGI), one Benjamin Wimbush MORTON married a Mary WILSON in Montgomery Co, VA on 29 Oct 1810. Other records seem to indicate that this Benjamin Wimbush MORTON was the son of Peyton MORTON and Nancy WIMBUSH, of Prince Edward Co, VA. I do not know whether the aforementioned John MOURTON is related to the Benjamin Wimbush MORTON / Peyton MORTON family or not.
My Anderson MORTON (b. 1814 VA) would move to Missouri by 1837. He wed Angelina Frances ESTES in Howard Co, MO in 1837, and later lived in Cedar County / Rives County, and still later St. Clair County, Missouri. In 1850, living near him in Cedar Co, MO was a John MORTON (b. 1813 VA) with wife Catherine and their children. It would seem likely, due to their proximity, ages, and places of birth, that Anderson and John were brothers. From the birth records of John's children, it would appear as if his family lived in Tennessee during the 1830s, and then moved to Missouri during the 1840s.
Can anybody shed any light on the John MOURTON/MORTON family living in Montgomery Co, VA during the 1810 census, and whether this family is related to the family of Benjamin Wimbush MORTON and/or Peyton MORTON? Also, can anyone tie my Anderson MORTON (b. 1814 VA) or John MORTON (b. 1813 VA) to any MORTON families in Virginia?
