MORTON's of Orange County, Indiana to Des Moines, Iowa!! Where are you?

Looking for ANY known siblings, parents, and relationships to any of the following persons:
William Herman Morton, born 23 Jan 1887 Milltown, Indiana
Married Leona M. Parker born abt. 1889-1891 in Indiana. Lived in Orleans, Orange County, Indiana.
Children:
1) Edmond G. Morton (Born: 1908)
2) Mary Christine Morton (Born: 1910; d. abt 1985 Des Moines, Iowa)
3) Hazel Elizabeth Morton (Born: 1915)
4) Helen L Morton (Born: 1918)
5) Hester J Morton (Born: 1920)
6) Martha J Morton (Born: 1922)

Daughter Mary Christine Morton married Wayne Edward McCart who was born in Orange County, Indiana 13 Dec 1907
Orleans, Orange, Indiana; Died: 30 Oct 1929 Orleans, Orange, Indiana as a young father of Rosemary Jeannette McCart abt. 1-2 years old, and unborn son, Robert Wayne McCart. When Wayne died after a sudden illness of cancer, the Morton's packed the family up, including their young widowed daughter Mary Christine (Morton) McCart, age 20 to Des Moines, Iowa. The McCart's are heavily researched.
I am primarily interested in the MORTON family and would like to know the parentage and lineage of William Herman Morton and his wife, Leona M. (Parker)Morton.
They show up on the 1930 US Federal Census in Des Moines, Iowa as a family unit the year after Wayne died.
OBITUARY WAYNE EDWARD MCCART:
Contributed by, Cathy Beard
Wayne McCart was born December 13, 1907 and in the bloom of early manhood he passed from this life to a heavenly rest October 30, 1929, at the age of 21 years and 10 months. His mother died when he was small, leaving him and his two sisters, Lula and Shirley to the care of his father, Edward McCart. He received his education in the public schools of Orleans, having completed two years in high school. He was married to Mary C. Morton September 18, 1926 and to this union was born a daughter, Rosemary Jeanette. Wayne was a good boy and gave evidence of the presence of God with him and though we lay the body away the real Wayne is living and is safe in the keeping of the Heavenly Father who is love. There leaves to mourn his going his wife and daughter, his father and two sisters, and a host of other relatives and friends. Services were conducted at the Baptist Church Friday, November 1 by Rev. F. C. Luedecke.
_______________________________________________________
1930 US Federal Census, Des Moines, Polk County, Iowa:
Head: William H Morton 43 (b. abt. 1887 in Indiana)
Wife: Leona M Morton 39
Son: Edman G Morton 21
Dau: Hazel E Morton 15
Dau: Helen L Morton 12
Dau: Hester J Morton 10
Dau: Martha J Morton 8
Dau: Mary McCart 19
Grandchild: Rose M McCart 2 5/12
Grandchild: Robert W McCart 4/12
I also found a 1910 US Federal Census in Blue River, Harrison, Indiana with only the oldest boy Edmond (Edman) and his wife, Leona M. Parker.
Any information would be appreciated. Thanks.

joseph morton manse Glasgow area C19 ship building link

My grandmother (now deceased) told me of her grandfather, Joseph Morton, who died in Derby in the early 1920s. She stated that he came from a family linked to shipbuilding based in Glasgow, but 'ran away' to work on the railways. He had told her he grew up at a manse in the Glasgow area. I'm afraid I know no more details, so this is a needle in a haystack. All I've found out, however, is that he is recorded as born in Peterborough, Eng., in 1851. And he was in Derby as a railway worker by 1891. I'm trying to trace any truth in what my grandmother was told - if anyone knows of anything that might validate this I would be very grateful!

Morton family

My Gr.Grandparents David Morton and Margaret Wilson lived in the townland of Corran in the Killashandra parish Co Cavan. They were both 70years old in the 1841 census making their births around 1770 and they married in 1790. Both said they were born in Co Cavan but I could not find either their births or marriage in the Killashandra Church of Ireland records. David's brothers were William and Edward and their father could possibly have been either Robert or John Morton. Does anyone have any Mortons from other parishes in either Co Cavan or Co Fermanagh that might tie into them? Any help would be appreciated.

MORTONs of Kinawley Parish, Ireland, MD, & PA in 18th century

The MORTON's probably of Derryvore or Drumboury Townland in the Parish of Kinawley in Ireland are well represented in the Kinaweley Parish Records from 1768- 1773. Edward Morton was the eldest of the five brothers who went to Philadelphia in 1765. John Morton emigrated to Philadelphia, U.S.A. with his brothers, Edward, William, Richard, and Thomas, in 1765. His parents, William Morton & Mary Downey, also went. Mary Doonan (Downey) the Godmother, was his sister.

John Jackman, b. 1745 probably in Ireland, married Margaret MORTON, the daughter of Edward Morton, possibly of Mullaghinchogar, Enniskillen, Ireland. John Jackman had three children married in the St. John's Episcopal Church in Baltimore Co., in 1771. John and Edward Jackman appeared in that county as early as 1768 when they signed a petition against moving the county seat. They probably immigrated together with the MORTONs in 1765.

THere were two MORTON marriages in that same church in Baltimore Co., MD:
10 Feb. 1771 Joseph Morton and Molley Shelby [Is he possibly the Joseph Morton who was the son of Edward & Jane Morton, and a sibling of Margaret Morton who m. John Jackman a few years later in 1780. Their other child was named Moses Morton.]
page 262

5 July 1771 John Morton and Sarah Harline [I don't know of a John Morton who was the son of Edward and Jane Morton.]

These MORTONs ended-up in Washington Co., PA after the Rev. War.

Does anyone have any more info about them?

GWP
Bryans Road, MD
For those interested I have a lot of information concerning John Morton the Co-Signor of the Declaration of Independence. The information is quite extensive and won't fit in these message areas. If you will send me a request for the info, I would be glad to compile it up in a text doc or MS-Word doc and send it to you.

I am interested in searching John's down line as I have been told by family members now passed that I am a direct descendant. Still trying to prove it though.

Thanks.
stephen

Chief Officer Neil McDougall MORTON

I was photographing war graves near Oban for the War Grave Photographic Project today.

One of the outstanding oneS that I did was Chief Officer Neil McDougall MORTON, the inscription on the grave seemed unusual so I looked it up when I got home and the incident was a major scandal at the time. The ship was torpedoed 200 miles from land, the 41 survivors were told to get on the hull of the U-Boat. The lifeboats were then sunk and most of them had their life jackets taken from them and all had their outer clothing taken. The U-Boat then submerged, there were only three survivors.

I have a picture of the grave if there is anyone connected to his family.

IN
SACRED AND LOVING MEMORY
OF
NEIL MCDOUGALL MORTON
OF SUNDERLAND
AGED 27 YEARS
CHIEF OFFICER OF BELGIAN PRINCE
TORPEDOED AND CRUELLY
MURDERED BY THE HUNS
ON 31 JULY 1917
(BODY WASHED ASHORE AT CUAN FERRY
ON 23RD SEPT)
HE GAVE HIS LIFE THAT
WE MIGHT NOT STARVE
ERECTED
BY HIS MOTHER
Moses Morton m. Adaline Devereaux, circa 1840, Western PA, Sugar Grove

Hi,

I am looking for more information on the Moses Morton-Adaline Devereaux family. One problem I have is that I have seen many times a death date given for Adaline given some time in the 1800's but yet we have a reunion picture which has my grandmother and great aunt in it and they both identified Adaline in it. (See my Schram Family Tree if you wish to see it.) Of course, now they are gone so I can't re-ask them about it.

Also, many people on line have added two new children to Moses and Adaline's family. I have researched Sophronia and found her in the census and am satisfied that she is a member of the family and was missed in the "Genealogy of the Family of Jonathan Devereaux" but Elija Morton still remains a mystery. Does anyone know if he died early in life? Or anything else about him?

The picture of their son, Ernest Morton, in front of a phonograph is also on my pages which may of interest to someone. I try to get a many picture on line as I can to share with the community but it takes time. If you have time could you look at the original picture where the pictures of Adaline and Ernest came from to see if there any other Morton's you recognize?

While it was called a "Devereaux" reunion, Richard Devereaux's daughters brought their husbands and children and grandchildren to the reunion. I also believe this reunion took place at Moses Morton house. Does any one know where that was?

Thanks for any help.

Morton Family in Great Valley, Cattaraugus County, New York (1850-)

Seeking to share information with other researchers interested in this Morton family. The given names include Hugh, Agnes, John, William, Gaven (Gavin), James, Jane, David, Mary, Alexander, Samuel, and Harriet. John Morton was married twice; his first wife was Jane Lindsay and his second wife was Sarah Simmons.

I am interested in proving the link I have made from the Gavin Morton who lived in Minnesota after 1870 and the Gavin in this John Morton family. There is another Gavin who is about the same age who continues to live in the Upstate New York area after 1870.

Any information you might have about any of these Mortons may help me with my research. Most of my information comes from on-line sources, but I will be happy to share what I have pulled together. I have information and sources that can bring the line forward to the present if I am able to prove that the Gavin in Minnesota is the son of John in Great Valley.

Stephen Morton, b. 1710

Hello everyone,

I have been tracing the records of my Morton ancestors that came to Rutherford County, TN from VA in last years of the 18th century. James Blythe Morton (1758-1808) was the first of my line to be in Rutherford County, I think.

I found an article in the William & Mary Historical Quarterly that traced his line to John Morton (1650-1722) through his grandson (by John Morton, Jr. b. 1684) Stephen Morton (1710-1793). However, this article has no other information on Stephen Morton, except his birth and death dates. There is no record that I can find of whom he married, or anything else.

Here is a bit of text describing James Blythe Morton from the article ("Morton Family of Henrico, Prince Edward and Brunswick Counties, Virginia." James Walter Allen.
William and Mary College Quarterly Historical Magazine, 2nd Ser., Vol. 11, No. 3. (Jul., 1931), pp. 210-220.):

"James4 Morton (Steph3, John2, Johnl)
James5 and Joseph5 Morton witnesses to the will of Nancy Morton of Rutherford Co. Tenn. in 1823 were sons of James4 Morton born (circa) 1758 and his wife Catherine (Kitty) Wells. He was one of the youngest lieutenants in the Revolution and was from Charlotte Co. Va. In 1795 his daughter Judith married Owen Edwards in Henry Co. Va. He went to Tenn. circa 1800 and died in Rutherford Co. in 1808 and left will naming the following: wife Catherine, Son Joseph, son James Blyth and daughters Judith, Sally, Lucinda and Tabitha."

Does anyone out there have information on this Stephen Morton? The ancestry family trees seem to think that James Blythe Morton was John Morton's son (Stephen's brother), but this article says not. I am more inclined to believe an article in a scholarly journal than the hints. Thank you in advance if you have any information on him or this family!

(I am sorry about the formatting on this post. The board will not let me enter html and it won't recognize my paragraph breaks!)

I am trying to find information on my Grandfather, Harold Morton. born March 15, 1907. He married Elnora E Peterson, around 1931 when she was 16. She was from Olean, New York. I have heard he was possibly from Ohio or Pennsylvannia and that he was married once before briefly but she died. He was a black male. Any help would be appreciated.

My ggg-grandfather was Samuel Morton who I believe was born in OH in 1801 to Thomas & Rebecca(Squier) Morton. He married Jane Wyckoff in 1822 in Butler Co, OH and subsequently moved to Michigan, Iowa and Kansas. His children were Rachel, Ellen, Francis, Peter Schenck, Samuel, Rebecca, Iva Jane, Susan, Mary Melissa & Thomas Benton. After his 1st wife died he married Deborah and had the following children: Benjamin, Emily, Perry, Hirem Meeker & Sophronia. I'm trying to confirm his parents in OH. I have a letter from 1861 from his mother (I believe). No name, only that she lives in Mason, Warren Co. OH. If anyone has any information on this family in any of these three counties, please let me know. Thanks!

Mark Morton, Canada (possibly Ontario)

Hi, I have recently discovered that my first cousin once removed was taken to Canada in September 1920 on board the SS Metagama with the Macpherson Party, an organisation that took poor & needy children from England & Scotland to Canada to train in various professions & 'distribute' them to families. The destination given on the passengers list is Marchmont Home, Belleville, Ontario. Further searching found that he was to be placed with a Mark Morton, but no other information is forthcoming. Does anyone know of a Mark Morton who would be living in the area around 1920?

My relation was Frederick Attwell b 1909, Old Windsor, Berkshire, England. He was living in a boys' home at the time.

Cheers
Neil

Looking for ancestors of William Lyons & Annie Lyons nee McCrae (married 1875 Derry Ireland)

Hi,

I am trying to trace my husbands maternal family tree. His G Grandparents are William Lyons and Annie Lyons nee McCrae.

William Lyons married Annie McCrae in county Derry, Ireland on the 16th of May, 1875 (as per the details recorded on their son (Thomas Lyons - born Cambursland Scotland) birth certificate).

I believe both William and Annie were born in Ireland where they had some of their children and later travelled to Scotland and had more children. I am unsure where or when they died.

Any information in relation to this family would be greatly appreciated.

I would also love to hear from any descendants.

Thanks Rebecca

William Cornelius married Leonora Callanan (b. 1847) and had children William Hobbard Morton (b. 1867 Melbourne, Australia), Jemima, Mary Ann and others.

William Hobbard Morton married Wilhelmina Conrad and was subsequently city engineer, Wellington, New Zealand - they had children Hubert Conrad Morton, Dr Frank Adrian Morton and Marjorie Morton (my grandmother), all born in Melbourne and emigrating to Wellington, New Zealand.

More about William Cornelius Morton is that he was in the Royal Scottish Engineers and fought in the Siege of Lucknow and the Maori Wars where he was awarded a New Zealand medal with clasp.

Information on any of the above would be extremely welcome!

IF you do happen to know anything about his daughter Tempe/Tampe/Temperance MORTON who married Joseph PEIRCE/PIERCE, let me know.

Does anyone have any information relating to these? The census
of 1851 shows them living in St. Giles Parish in Carrville, Durham England. John was a coal miner. Their children were William, James, John, Henry, Ann, George, Hannah, and Ralph. Their son, James, emigrated to the USA in the early 1860's. His sister Hannah is my husbands great grand mother. We know that a descendant of James called Iva Morton married to a Tom Morton was corresponding with their cousins (my husbands grandparents) until the early 1960's. We still have letters written by her in our possession. Any information relating to any of the family members would be very gratefully received. We are pretty new to this and the link to the US seems to have particularly drawn a blank.
Many thanks

I have found Dorus MORTON in three histories of Oakland County, Michigan, where he pioneered in 1827. He lived with son Thomas Slayton Morton & family in Owosso, Shiawassee county, for many years. He appears in the 1870 census, and in a city directory in 1878. However, he is absent from the 1880. He wasn't buried with his wife, who died in 1837 in Oakland Cty, and can't be found in the Shiawassee County online database. If anyone has a connection to Dorus, or any information, I would love to hear from you. Julia

I am from the Dearden family by way of Margaret Dearden Boyle who came to NY from Liverpool in 1925. Her brother Joseph immigrated to Vancouver after remarrying with his two children Joseph and Catherine.
Margaret and Joesph's mother was Ann Morton and beyond her birth, marriage, death and 1901 census I can't find further info on her. I believe her father was Thomas Morton from St. Thomas parish in Liverpool. She was born in 1875.
Any help would be great.

I was at an antique sale today and found a unique little 2 by 3 inch photo-book which belonged to Susie C. Morton Pierce. Each picture is labelled neatly with a name, and their relation to Sue Morton. I looked up her genealogy (http://wc.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=:320851...) to see if I could find it online.

The pictures included are of herself(2); her parents Martha E. Waterman and Henry Morton; her sister Emma M. Morton; her grandparents Susan A. Crafts and William Waterman; her great-grandfather Reverend Ashley Crafts; and another picture at the end which the name is missing on. There is an empty slot labelled Fred Henry Morton, her brother.

If anyone is interested in seeing this, etc. please let me know by responding to this or emailing me (jadey213@yahoo.com).
